‘A Safe Place’ donation drive set for Sept. 26

Christian Wellness Ministry, a group of like minded people from area churches is holding a donation drive to help support A Safe Place.

Some of the churches from Antioch involved in the Christian Wellness Ministry are United Methodist Church (UMCA), St. Stephen Lutheran, and St. Ignatius Episcopal Church.

They support many local ministries including Caregiver Support Group, Grief Support Group, Wellness Walks, Knitting and Crochet Group, Counseling Support and others.

Christian Wellness Ministry has chosen A Safe Place as their latest recipient for support.

A Safe Place is the sole provider of services exclusively addressing domestic violence in Lake County. Through multifaceted programs, they assist victims in transforming their lives after domestic violence, prevent future abuse by addressing its root cause through abuser intervention programs and educate the community about domestic violence and how we all can be involved in ending it. They provide many services including a crisis line, emergency shelter, intervention programs, housing, counseling, courthouse advocacy and more.

The United Methodist Church will be hosting their donation drive on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 848 Main St., Antioch. They will also be picking up items by appointment from Sept. 2125. COVID precautions will be taken and all donations will be

double bagged upon receiving them.

Donation items needed are, but not limited to: lotions, body soap, ethnic hair care products, deodorant, hair brushes, perfume and body sprays, hair curling irons/straighteners, new/unused make-up; Baby items: diapers, baby powder, shampoo, baby wipes, formula, bottles and sippy cups; Home items: towels, comforters, new pillows, plates, dishes, eating utensils; Cleaning items: bleach, Lysol, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet bowl cleaner, trash bags, paper towels and toilet paper.

Also needed are gift cards, especially Visa, Target, WalMart and Sally Beauty Supply.

Any amount is fine. There is also an online wish list available at www.domesticshelters.org.

Donations that do not meet the standards and restrictions of A Safe Place cannot be accepted. Some of these items include, but are not limited to the following: used clothing including bras and underwear, stained or ripped clothing and shoes, matresses, used car seats, toys, stuffed animals, hotel sized toiletries, open or expired food, and torn, stained, soiled or heavily used linens.

Please note that at this time they are unable to accept women’s and children’s used clothing.

Due to donor generosity, their storage spaces are filled to capacity on these items.

30 counties at warning level; state COVID-19 positivity rate at 3.9 percent

The state reported another 2,145 cases of COVID-19 on Friday, Sept. 11, as 56,661 tests were completed over the previous 24 hours, increasing the seven-day average positivity rate to 3.9 percent.

The Illinois Department of Public Health also announced another 32 virus-related deaths in persons aged between their 50s and their 90s.

That brought the total number of deaths to 8,273 since the pandemic first reached Illinois, while there have been 257,788 confirmed cases among more than 4.6 million tests completed. The recovery rate is 96 percent for those 42 days removed from a positive diagnosis, according to IDPH. There were 30 counties at a warning level for COVID-19 spread as of Sept. 11, according to IDPH, and two areas that have seen increased restrictions due to COVID-19 saw their positivity rate remain roughly flat.

Region 7, including Will and Kankakee counties, has a 7.5 percent positivity rate as of Sept. 8, which was level from the day prior. In Region 4, including the Metro East area on the Missouri border, the positivity rate was 10 percent.

The regions’ positivity rates must decrease to 6.5 percent before added mitigations—which include closing of bars and restaurants to indoor eating and drinking— can be rolled back.

Gov. JB Pritzker, at an unrelated news conference Sept. 11, took questions on mitigation efforts and their potential impact on mental health, drug overdoses and suicide.

“There’s a mental health component to that as well.

Not to mention that we’ve also stepped up our efforts in providing social services, human services to people,” Pritzker said of the state’s mitigation efforts at the Chicago news conference.

On Sept. 10, IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a news conference there was “no conclusive data” that suicide rates have increased due to COVID-19, but she noted, “issues such as job loss, financial strain and social isolation are all risk factors for suicide.”

She urged anyone in an emergency situation regarding suicide to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

“We’re looking at every aspect of how this is affecting our families and trying to deal with those,” Pritzker said Friday. “There are people who might say, ‘Well why don’t you just lift the mitigations because that will lift some mental health challenges that people are having’—again, you’re trying to balance here the health care that has been so damaged by this pandemic, and clearly the consequences from people not being able to do what they normally do in their

lives.”

The governor once again blamed a lack of a national strategy for making it difficult for states to mitigate spread.

He said Iowa, which had a positivity rate near 14 percent, and Missouri, with a rate near 12 percent, are among neighboring states with much higher positivity rates.

“They’re on our border and people are crossing that border all the time, both ways, and I’m not telling people that they shouldn’t do that, I’m just saying that has an impact on what we do as a state. But if you had a federal focus on a strategy for all of the states, you wouldn’t have this problem of relatively lower positivity rate in the state of Illinois and then having to deal with all the much higher positivity rates in all the surrounding states.”

While a vaccine could “change the trajectory,” according to the governor, he

said the economy will be unable to recover without a national strategy.

Hospitalizations for the virus in Illinois remain slightly above their pandemic lows.

At the end of Thursday, there were 1,619 persons reported hospitalized with COVID-19, leaving about 37 percent of beds available statewide.

There were 359 intensive care unit beds in use by COVID-19 patients while roughly 42 percent were available. COVID-19 patients were using 155 ventilators, with roughly 78 percent available.

The counties at a warning level include Bond, Bureau, Cass, Clinton, Coles, Crawford, DeKalb, DuPage, Effingham, Greene, Grundy, Hancock, Henderson, Jackson, Jasper, Jersey, Lawrence, Madison, McLean, Monroe, Morgan, Pulaski, Schuyler, Shelby, Stark, St. Clair, Tazewell, Vermilion, Washington and Williamson.

A county enters a warn-

ing level when two or more risk indicators measuring the amount of COVID-19 increase, including cases per 100,000 residents, hospital bed usage, test positivity rate and number of deaths among others.

Common causes for an increase in cases in those counties are college parties, weddings, large gatherings, bars and clubs, long-term care facilities and other congregate settings, travel to neighboring states, and spread among members of the same household who are not isolating at home, according to IDPH. “In some counties, local law enforcement and states’ attorneys are not enforcing important mitigation measures like social distancing and the wearing of face coverings,” IDPH said in a news release. “Additionally, some people refuse to participate in contact tracing and are not providing information on close contacts or answering the phone.”

The caring Karens I’ve known have been just that. How many other first names can you think of that sound so close to caring or kindness? Karen fits that bill as do the bulk of Karens in my life.

Yet the name, for many, has been dragged through the mud – and poopy, selfrighteous mud at that. It warrants its own Wikipedia page. It has become a caricature, created to make a point, but resulting in pulling some innocents along the route along the way.

Karen (and you know who

you are) I apologize for the one Karen who wrecked it for you all. Life is unfair. And we all deal with unfairness, but no one wants their very name to be plowed through a cesspool of poopy mud.

Never mind the other Karen – the guilty one. There are thousands and thousands of you who are not doers of the transgression so described in countless memes and on Wikipedia.

Hold your head high.

Speak your name proudly.

Stereotypes are for the desperate. For the ignorant.

For the belittlers. For all the things none of us aspire to be.

My name is Karen. I am Karen. It’s Karen with a

“K.” That’s you. And there are scores of us, not named Karen, who will stand beside you, proudly.

Suicide is preventable and help is always available

This year, 55 lives have been lost to suicide in Lake County, Illinois September 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day, and the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center encourages all people to continue to share a message of hope: Suicide is preventable, and help is available in Lake County.

“Many people are facing added stress and anxiety during the pandemic, and deaths by suicide are trending higher in Lake County this year,” said Sam Johnson-Maurello, Director of Behavioral Health at the Health Department. “So far this year, 55 Lake County residents have tragically died by suicide. Over the past several years, we have averaged 65 lives lost to suicide annually.

Right now, we want every person to know that you are not alone, and help is available.”

The Lake County Health Department’s Crisis Care Program offers a free, confidential hotline for anyone experiencing a mental crisis or substance use issue at

(847) 377-8088. Counselors are also available in person at 3002 Grand Avenue, Waukegan, Illinois. People wishing to speak with a counselor can call or walk in, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“A mental health crisis could include overwhelming depression, thoughts of suicide, poor concentration, disturbing thoughts, or feeling out of control,” said Joe Tranchita, Crisis Care Program Coordinator for the Health Department. “We can help you understand what is going on, help you explore your options, offer support, and refer you to the right resources.”

Another resource is Text-aTip, an anonymous text-communication system for youth who need help. The “Lake County Help” smartphone app, available for free download in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, allows you to send a message and get an immediate response from a li-

OAKtober native tree and shrub sale underway The Lake County Forest Preserves is holding its popular OAKtober Native Tree & Shrub Sale online this season and encouraging homeowners to place orders from the convenience of home.

The plants will be available for curbside pick-up from 9 am–12pm on Sunday, October 4 at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods.

Half-hour time slots will be assigned alphabetically.

“We’ll load the plants right into your car, contact free,” said Director of Education Nan Buckardt.

“Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs,” Buckardt said. “Plant metabolism is slowing and this lessens the stress for the newly planted tree,” she said.

“Choose your favorite plants from our list of 24 species, including oaks, hickory, hawthorns, dogwood, hazelnut and more,” Buckardt said. Plants are available in 5-gallon, 1-gallon, and 1-inch-diameter sizes. “Our OAKtober woody plant sale offers native tree and shrub species with genetics adapted for our region,” she said.

The committee adjourned without setting a date for its next meeting. Welch said that he and the ranking Republican member, Rep. Tom Demmer, of Dixon, first need to consult with the U.S. Attorney’s office in order to avoid interfering with the ongoing federal investigation.

“Before we take any substantive action, we must consult with the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District,” Welch said. “This committee must avoid taking any action that can be an interference with an ongoing federal investigation or investigations.”

Durkin noted that was the same process used in the case of former Rep. Smith in 2012 as well as the impeachment proceedings against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich in 2009.

and former federal prosecutors who is working with the House Republicans, said the deferred prosecution agreement contains evidence that is stronger than a criminal charge.

“The deferred prosecution agreement contains actual evidence, actual admissions

by Commonwealth Edison, agreed to by the United States of America,” he said. “That is quite different and more substantial than a mere charge.”

Safer also noted that the committee’s job is not to determine whether Madigan committed a crime, but rather whether he engaged in conduct unbecoming to a legislator of which constitutes a breach of public trust.

Welch noted the same thing in his opening remarks.

“This is a political process, not a legal proceeding. We are not a court of law,” he said.

“As such, this committee is not bound by traditional rules of evidence. However, we are bound to adhere to the rules of decorum.”

In addition to the formal charge, Republicans said they are seeking “voluntary” witnesses to testify and produce documents. Those include Madigan himself and several people mentioned in the U.S. Attorney’s subpoena.

Republicans in the Illinois House on Sept. 10 unveiled a single charge they hope to bring against Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, accusing him of “conduct unbecoming to a legislator or which constitutes a breach of public trust.”

House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, introduced that charge during the first day of hearings of a Special investigative Committee that is looking into Madigan’s role in a bribery and extortion scheme involving utility giant Commonwealth Edison.

“As was stated earlier, this is a unique proceeding. It has only been invoked once and that was back in 2012,” Durkin said, referring to hearings that led to the expulsion of former Rep. Derrick Smith, who was then under federal indictment for accepting a $7,000 bribe from a confidential informant in exchange for legislative favors.

But unlike the Smith case, Madigan so far has not been charged with any crime and he has strenuously denied engaging in any wrongdoing, a fact that Democrats on the six-member panel pointed out repeatedly.

“This case is unique to previous special investigating com-

mittees, in that the member that is subject of the petition has not been accused by federal prosecutors of any criminal activity,” committee Chairman Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, said at the outset of the hearing.

Madigan was implicated in the scheme when officials at ComEd entered a deferred prosecution agreement in July with the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District in Chicago. In that agreement, the company admitted that over a period of years, it awarded lobbying jobs and contracts to close associates of Madigan in an effort to win his favor for legislation that benefited the company.

Although Madigan has not been charged with a crime, U.S. Attorney John Lausch has said there is an ongoing investigation into the matter and his office has issued a subpoena to Madigan’s office for documents and records of communication related to efforts to secure jobs at ComEd or its parent company Exelon for several named individuals.

“So the charge is based on criminal activity, criminal activity that has not been charged,” Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said about the charge being considered by the committee.

Additional $25K from Metallica rockstar gives scholarships to College of Lake County students College of Lake County’s heavy metalworking program was awarded an additional $25,000 grant from the heavy metal rock band, Metallica.

Thanks to a recent GoFundMe sweepstakes where Metallica’s James Hetfield fundraised over $75,000 through the sale of his handmade coffee tables, CLC was selected as one of three colleges to receive additional funds because of the institution’s metalworking curriculum.

Harley Pletz is a Metallica Scholar who focused on welding and fabrication. He also recently started work as an apprentice mold maker. The scholarship helps him pay for tuition and fees, books and some daily living expenses. Best of all it allows him to take a few additional technical courses in addition to welding.

“It makes me feel proud that I am learning a trade which Metallica supports,” Pletz said. “Most scholarships are geared to fields

Veteran trustee to run for mayor

Antioch Village Trustee Mary Dominiak has announced she will run for mayor in the April 2021 election.

Dominiak has been a Village Trustee for nine years.

“I have loved this community since my husband, Ed, and I moved here 24 years ago,” Dominiak said in a Sept. 8 release announcing her campaign. “Antioch has faced Mary Dominiak challenges in those two decades, but it still retains the quality of living that brought us here.”

Dominiak said the Village Board needs to address Antioch’s aging infrastructure and protect its parks, neighborhoods and help businesses thrive and grow.

“We need to understand the concerns and interests of newcomers to our community as well as those who were born and raised here,” she said.

Dominiak said she looks forward to outlining her plans for the village in the months running up to the election.

Court reports Man arrested with stolen firearm after shooting into Antioch neighborhood

On August 27 and August 31, 2020, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Channel Lake Subdivision in Unincorporated Antioch for a report of shots being fired.

When they arrived both times to investigate, sheriff’s deputies located used shell casings.

They were .22 LR casings on both occasions.

The investigating deputies received information about a possible vehicle involved.

Based on the description of the vehicle, the deputies determined the vehicle was involved in a recent traffic crash in the Village of Antioch. The driver at that time was identified as Joseph L. Engmark, 41, of the 10700 block of 255th Street, Trevor, WI. Through additional investigative work, deputies learned Engmark was a suspect in a 2018 burglary which occurred in the 43300 block of North Melva Avenue, Unincorporated Antioch, where a .22LR rifle was stolen. The deputies obtained further information about the burglary and were able to determine based on witness descriptions, Engmark matched the description of the person who had been randomly firing the firearm in the Channel Lake Subdivision.

On September 11, 2020,

sheriff’s deputies located Engmark driving southbound on Tiffany Road north of Route 173, Antioch. Sheriff’s deputies were aware Engmark had two active arrest warrants and was driving with a revoked driver’s license. They conducted a traffic stop on Engmark’s vehicle and placed him into custody.

The sheriff’s deputies located the stolen .22LR rifle in Engmark’s vehicle.

Engmark was arrested and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges: two Counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm (Class 2 Felonies), Possession of a Stolen Firearm (Class 2 Felony), Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 3 Felony), and Driving with a Revoked Driver’s License (Class 4 Felony).

Engmark was transported to the Lake County Jail where he remains held on $75,000.00 bail. He is next due to appear in court on October 7, 2020, at 1:30PM in courtroom T110.

arm while outside of the Jesse Oaks Food & Drink. The man then walked to the Firehouse Pub where two gunshots were heard. A description of the subject and firearm were provided to the deputies.

Deputies located a man matching the description of the subject on the back deck of the Firehouse Pub. The subject ran through the Firehouse Pub, exited the front door, and continued running away from the deputies. While running away from the deputies, the subject fell. The subject was then detained by the deputies a short distance away. A magazine with ammunition was located on the subject.

A canine team from the Gurnee Police Department arrived on the scene to conduct an article search. A 9 mm handgun was located by Gurnee Canine Bear where the subject fell.

The subject, Joe Torres, 23, of the 33000 block of Sears Blvd in Grayslake, was interviewed by members of the LCSO Criminal Investigations Division. After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges: Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony), Reckless Discharge of a Firearm (Class 4 Felony), Disorderly Conduct (Class A Misdemeanor), Un-

lawful Possession of Ammunition (Class A Misdemeanor), and Resisting a Peace Officer (Two Counts, Class A Misdemeanor).

Torres was treated on the scene for a minor cut that occurred during the fall. No one else was injured in the incident.

He appeared in bond court and was remanded into the custody of the jail on a $15,000 bond and not allowed to return to Jesse Oaks or the Firehouse Pub.

On September 10, members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office served arrest warrants on Carlos J. Acosta, 54, of Woodstock and Andrew R. Polovin, 48, of Island Lake, Illinois.

Acosta and Polovin were charged with two felony counts of endangering the life of a child and one felony count of reckless conduct.

Both were taken into custody without incident and transported to Carlos Acosta the McHenry County Correctional Facility. At the time of the press release their court date was still to be set.

At the time of press, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office did not release any additional information related to the investigation leading up to the warrants of arrest.

The charges against these Andrew Polovin individuals are merely allegations against them. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On September 11, 2020, at approximately 1:07 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a traffic crash with injuries in the area of Buckley Road (Rt 137) and Saint Mary’s Road in Green Oaks.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and located a car versus bicycle crash. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle, a 48 year old man from Round Lake Beach, was traveling west on Buckley Road and struck a bicyclist.
