Lake County Forest Preserves earns national awards The Lake County Forest Preserves, two of its volunteers and its charitable partner, the Preservation Foundation, have earned national awards.

The National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) comprises 117 park and special recreation districts from across the country, of which the Lake County Forest Preserves is a member organization.

“We’re so proud of the

dedicated work our staff and volunteers do on a consistent basis,” said Angelo Kyle, president of the Lake County Forest Preserves. “We’re honored that they are being recognized for their efforts by such a prestigious organization.”

Outstanding Supporting Organization The Preservation Foundation earned an Outstanding Supporting Organization Award, given annually to

an organization that has responded in an exceptional manner by making a major contribution to benefit park and recreational programs.

Middle age doesn’t sound quite so bad after all I’m not sure of the exact definition of middle age.

I guess it depends on how long you plan to live. I’m not ready to publicly admit to middle agedness because I plan to live forever, but I am beginning to get a feel for some of the changes that happen during the F-word decades.

Like the rest of us from the Brady Bunch generation, I’ve lived a few years and have watched the world evolve throughout my lifetime. I’ve witnessed new inventions like cellphones and computers. I remember back when telephones were tethered to the wall. My first computer had no hard drive. Zero. That was back in the ancient times of floppy disks.

When you hit middle age, you realize things don’t work like they used to – and I’m not talking about newfangled gizmos such as

Speaking of health issues, I’ve recently discovered the joy of migraine headaches.

They say that for women of a certain age, migraines can be attributed to hormonal issues, as can changes in appetite, sleep patterns, weight gain, mood swings, sweating, anxiety, heart palpitations, energy level and ability to think straight – otherwise referred to by the medical term: brain fog.

It’s a time of more and less. You have more patience, but fewer young children to try that patience.

You have less hair on your head, but more growing out of less desirable places – like your nose and ears. You eat less but weigh more.

“Wes and Carol are outgoing and great spokespersons for natural areas restoration,” Schultz said. “They interact with forest preserve visitors, engaging them in conversations about what they are doing, and educating them on the importance of conservation and restoration.” The duo started volunteering for the Lake County Forest Preserves in 2006, taking on the steward role at Grassy Lake in 2010.

Since becoming stewards, they have contributed nearly 14,000 hours (collectively) to restoration at the preserve, and have guided volunteers through nearly 19,700 hours of cutting invasive brush, and collecting and sowing seed. In total, the stewardship group they lead has restored over 65 acres of woodland and 25 acres of wetland.

They have also been active volunteers in the Barrington Greenway Initiative, a public/ private partnership that includes the Lake County Forest Preserves, two other county open space agencies and four conservation not-for-profits intent on bringing additional resources to protect and restore natural areas in the Barrington area.

the preserve became a model of inefficiency with unused buildings, oversized parking lots and outdated utilities.

Spurred to action, the Forest Preserves established an interdepartmental planning team to lead the master planning process of historical documentation, evaluation and analysis of existing resources. “The plan provides the framework for a complete overhaul of the recreational facilities and future capital improvements,” she said.

Utilizing the public’s input, the master plan features a compact, efficient design with right sized infrastructure. It offers a significant reduction in annual operating costs, is ADA compliant, and is respectful of the preserve’s natural resources.

“With a restored, regionally unique ecosystem, and updated cultural and recreational resources, Lakewood will have a positive impact on the quality of life for residents for generations to come,” Mathis said.

Outstanding Volunteer Carol Hogan and Wesley Wolf earned an Outstanding Volunteer Award for their dedication and passion for restoring Lake County’s natural areas.

Senate GOP demands governor open IDES offices ‘Face-to-face assistance’ best way to address department delays, issues

Ten “frustrated” Republican senators demanded Gov. JB Pritzker allow state offices tasked with processing unemployment claims to reopen in a letter sent exactly five months after Illinois’ first stay-at-home order was issued.

The Department of Employment Security was widely reported to struggle with the historic influx of unemployment filings it received from residents who lost their job due to the COVID-19-induced economic downturn.

While the unemployment rate dropped from the pandemic peak of 16.8 percent in April to 11.3 percent in July, the senators argued Illinoisans continue to have problems applying for and receiving benefits from the department. These issues are “long-standing” and “continue unabated,” they wrote in a letter Aug. 20.

Reopening the Employ-

ment Security offices for “face-to-face assistance,” as Secretary of State Jesse White allowed for motor services buildings, is the best solution, the senators added.

“Surely in 6 months, couldn’t we have installed plexiglass barriers and outside air ventilation systems in the IDES offices by now,” they asked in their letter. “Limit the number of people in the offices, socially distance, mask, all that, hell, we don’t care, put a tent up outside and buy laptops for the staff—but get these offices back open.

People are hurting.”

Sen. Chapin Rose, from Mahomet, said in a phone conversation Friday that an avenue must exist for state employees to maintain their safety while still opening Employment Security Department doors for Illinoisans to receive assistance. He said if White could design a way for that to happen, schools can resume in-person lessons, and food and bank-

ing establishments are open, there is a way for residents to apply for unemployment benefits in person.

This request for department officials and Pritzker to rectify systemic delays and inaccuracies in unemployment benefits is not new.

Most recently, House Republicans asked for the same outcome after residents experienced fraud in a program designed to provide economic relief for those members of the economy who do not normally qualify for such benefits.

When faced with complaints about the Employment Security Department’s trouble in the last six months, Pritzker has maintained that officials are doing everything possible to solve the problem. He has said waning state investment in recent years, outdated infrastructure at the department and federal mandates that call center staff receive certain training before being allowed to assist resi-

The Honorable Judge William F. Homer 89 passed away on August 4, 2020, in Tampa Florida.

Judge Homer was born on September 19, 1930, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania.

Judge Homer attended the Illinois Institute of Technology where he received his bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering. Upon his graduation he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After he retired from the Navy, he attended John Marshall Law School where he earned his juris doctorate with honors. He joined and later became a partner with the Law Firm of Fuqua, Fuqua, Winter and Homer in Waukegan.

He was appointed Associate Judge in 1974 and served on the bench until retirement in 1992. Judge Homer liked to joke that his first day on the bench was April Fool’s Day and his last day was Pearl Harbor Day. As a respectable Judge, he also had a great passion for music and the arts in Waukegan and throughout Lake County. He enjoyed playing with the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra and Waukegan City Band. He ultimately was the recipient of the Jack Benny Arts & Humanities Award! His pride and joy was being the co-founder of the awardwinning “IL. British Style Brass Band” in which he played for almost 20 years!

first sporting event was a New York Yankee’s game in 1938 where he witnessed Lou Gehrig hit a home run. After that, he only attended one other baseball game, a Chicago Cubs versus Milwaukee Brewers game in Milwaukee in 2008.

William F. “Judge Homer was Homer known for his even temperament and jovial spirit and that made him both beloved and respected by the bar and by his colleagues. He served the people of Lake County well for 18 years and even though he retired in 1992, he is fondly remembered here at the courthouse. We will miss him,” said Chief Judge Diane E. Winter.

Judge Homer is survived by his loving wife Ludwina of 45 years, his two sons Eric and John, grandson Brett, sister Mary, step-children Tina Zeithammel Brunsman and Rudy Zeithammel, grandchildren Dawn, Rudy Jr, Paul, Danielle, Alexandra, and many great-grandchildren who knew him as “Opa Bill.” He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Helen Homer, his first wife Nanette Thomas and grandson Cameron.

A celebration of life is planned later on this year in Waukegan, Illinois.

Black Artists Showcase at CLC honors diversity Over 800 works are part of College of Lake County’s permanent collection College of Lake County recently debuted a new virtual art exhibition since COVID-19 keeps visitors from walking the aisles of the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art at the Grayslake campus. The latest Black Artists Showcase features artwork from CLC’s permanent collection. Each work was created by a Black artist including beloved CLC art faculty member Terry Dixon who recently passed away last year and retired CLC art professor and painter Reginald Coleman. Other renowned artists include Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, Mr. Imagination aka Gregory Warmack and Winfred Rembert.

“You’d never know the college owns these pieces featured in the Black Artists Showcase,” said Ann Rintz, art gallery and permanent collection curator. “It’s nice to shine a light on them. The pieces run the gamete – some were activists, some were not. All of these artists have a different take on what it’s like to be a Black artist, both historic and current.”

Over 800 works are part of the college’s permanent art collection. Significant Illinois artists, as well as nationally and internationally recognized artists have their work featured since the gallery started in 1981. The collection reflects a diverse range in media and style and is displayed throughout the Grayslake, Lakeshore and Southlake Campuses.

“It is not our place to speak on behalf of anyone,” said Rintz. “Art stimulates its own contemplation. Because art has the unique ability to educate the public and inspire change, we hope to strengthen Black voices and make them better heard.”

Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, a prominent Chicago artist, educator and institution-builder whose work is featured in the online exhibition said, “I wish my art to speak not only for my people but for all humanity. My subject matter is social commentary and seeks to improve the condition of life for all people.”

After high school, she went on to attend Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN. During the course of her education, she completed field experiences at Christ the King in Palm Coast, FL, Jefferson Elementary in New Ulm, MN, Fairmont High School in Fairmont, MN, and Emanuel in New London, WI. She graduated from Martin Luther College

with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Social Studies.

Preliminary investigation shows the Harley-Davidson, driven by a 63-year-old male of Gurnee, was traveling southbound on Hunt Club

Road just south of Millburn Road. For an unknown reason, the driver left the roadway and was ejected from his motorcycle. The driver sustained significant injuries upon being ejected and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Blues, Brews & BBQ to livestream Saturday Rotarians on the Blues, Brews & BBQ Committee were as disappointed as fans after announcing in April their pandemic-prompted decision to cancel this summer’s threeday fest, which would have been the ninth annual.

Fans can now click in for some virtual music, fun and camaraderie as Blues, Brews & BBQ goes livestream from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Viewers will be able to catch the livestream on the Blues, Brews & BBQ Facebook page, the McHenry Area Rotary Facebook page or on mrbbb.com via YouTube.

Concert videographer Kevin Schwartz of Milwaukeebased Instrumental Motion will film and coordinate the livestream, featuring performances by the John Todd Band and Matt Hines and the Midnight Howlers.

There will be no charge to click in, although organizers will encourage viewers to bid on auction items, buy 50-50 raffle tickets or make a donation at mrbbb.com, said Don Tonyan, event chairman.

“Blues, Brews & BBQ has been Rotary of McHenry’s chief fundraiser since 2012,” he said. “It’s raised hundreds of thousands of dollars that have gone toward scholarships, food pantry needs, veterans’ organizations, health-care nonprofits and much more.”

The year of doing things differently also prompted conversations with managers at premier event sponsor D.C. Cobb’s-McHenry — which will be a livestream watch location featuring special barbecue items and craft brew pairings — and with Scott Dehn of the McHenry Outdoor Theater. What at first was envisioned as encouraging fans to come watch the livestream projected onto the theater’s giant screen later morphed into a separate but intertwined event.

In conjunction with members of the Blues, Brews & BBQ Committee, Dehn has planned a Blooze/Blues Brothers Bash to benefit Rotary. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 29. Food will be available to purchase from a BBQ’d Productions trailer beginning about 5 p.m.

The Blooze Brothers will perform at 7:15 p.m. A segment of the livestream will be projected onto the big screen about 8:30 p.m. And the Blues Brothers movie, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, will start about 9 p.m. Cost to attend will be $40 a carload, with tickets available at the gate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Due to social distancing requirements, the property presently accommodates 420 cars, Dehn said, so arriving early is advised.

“Aug. 29 is going to be a lot of fun,” said Mike Lehman, president of the newly formed McHenry Area Rotary, a merger of the Rotary Club of McHenry and the McHenry Sunrise Rotary. “Whether folks watch from home, stop

Enumerators for U.S. Census are working in the communities

The official Non Response Follow Up (NRFU) for the U.S. Census is underway in local communities. The U.S. Census Bureau has accelerated the timeline to complete all 2020 Census counting efforts and the new deadline is September 30, 2020.

Enumerators have started to work in the communities under these guidelines:

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has continued following vigorous protocols in our ongoing efforts to best mitigate the risks from COVID-19 spreading among employees and jail inmates. Sheriff John Idleburg and his administrative team have been working in close collaboration with the Lake County Health Department in the mitigation effort.

In mid-July, an off-duty correctional officer began experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. The correctional offi-

cer took a COVID-19 test and learned he was positive. He did not return to work for 14days following his positive test.

As a preventative measure and with the expansion of COVID-19 testing availability, in early August all Lake County Jail employees were provided COVID-19 tests.

Of the nearly 140 tests provided, two correctional officers and one administrative assistant tested positive. All three were asymptomatic and

had no signs of illness. Those employees were immediately placed in quarantine-protocol and were restricted from returning to work for 14-days.

To further strengthen our mitigation efforts the sheriff’s office in collaboration with the Lake County Health Department will be providing COVID-19 tests to all inmates, correctional employees, facilities staff, and contractors who enter the jail facility.
