Volunteers package over 11,000 diapers Diaper needs skyrocket during COVID-19

Lake County is making sure that even their tiniest residents are being taken care of during the COVID-19 crisis. The Lake County Health Department partnered with the Lake County Community Foundation, Northern Illinois Food Bank and Twice as Nice Mother and Child to carry out this project.

Twice as Nice Mother and Child wrapped more than 11,000 diapers that were picked up by the Lake County Health Department to be distributed curbside at the 5 WIC locations throughout the county.

Twice as Nice Mother &

Child assists more than 1,000 children and 500 families each month. This number is expected to be higher during COVID-19 as hoarding and heightened demand has diminished available supplies. Safety net programs such as food stamps and WIC do not cover diapers so the need is always great and more people than ever are turning to diaper banks.

Many volunteers and businesses donated their time and resources to make this event happen. Even in times of uncertainty, the generosity of the Lake County residents is strong and together they are making a difference.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis Lake County organizations teamed up to make sure the diaper needs are being met.

CLC earns National Green Ribbon School award on Earth Day

Reinforcing its reputation as a national leader in sustainability, College of Lake County (CLC) was recently selected as one of five postsecondary institutions to be named a 2020 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School (EDGRS), announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2020. This is the first time the college has been granted this national recognition.

CLC’s green initiatives are constantly growing. In addition to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Science & Engineering Building completed in January 2018, the college recently introduced a Living Lab Trail, open to the community so that everyone can learn about sustainability. CLC also

convenes the Community Partners for Sustainability, a group of representatives from businesses, nonprofits, education, local government and the community dedicated to promoting environmental resilience, social responsibility and economic vitality.

“I’m proud CLC is recognized for being a living laboratory that connects learning with community and career opportunities,” said David Husemoller, college sustainability manager. “We have much more in store for campus with a new solar PV array and electric vehicle charging stations.”

Across the country, 39 schools, 11 districts, and five postsecondary institutions are being honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility

costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.

The honorees were named from a pool of candidates nominated by 27 states. The selectees include 28 public schools, including three magnet schools and four charter schools, as well as 11 nonpublic schools. Forty-five percent of the 2020 honorees serve a disadvantaged student body.

Beyond the Green Ribbon School designation, CLC has received nearly 10 regional or national awards and accolades for environmental sustainability over the last decade.

Female jail inmate tests positive for COVID-19

On April 16, 2020, a female in her 30’s, who had been arrested by North Chicago Police Department on a failure to appear arrest warrant for felony retail theft and felony theft, was transported to the Lake County Jail. In addition to the warrants, she was charged by North Chicago Police with obstruction of justice and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. she arrived at the jail after being transported by North Chicago PD. Upon arriving, the female attended an electronic bond hearing and was

remanded to the jail with a bond amount of $250,000.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., the female was transported to Vista East Medical Center as she is pregnant and appeared lethargic. There, she was diagnosed with a nonCOVID-19 medical issue and released back into the custody of the Lake County Jail at approximately 6:35 p.m. She was placed in the medical unit of the jail upon her return.

The following day, on April 17, the female was tested by the jail medical provider for COVID-19, as she was going through withdraw-

als, and her withdrawal-type symptoms presented similar to COVID-19 symptoms. On the morning of April 21, the jail was informed the female’s COVID-19 test was positive.

The female remains housed

in the medical unit and not in general population. No other inmates or correctional staff have tested positive. The jail continues to work closely with the Lake County Health Department.

Annual Lake County Police Memorial postponed The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is postponing the Annual Lake County Police Memorial due to continued COVID-19 concerns.

The annual event, scheduled to take place in May, will be postponed until the late summer or early fall.

Sheriff John Idleburg said, “While it is disappointing we have to postpone the Annual Lake County Police Memorial, it is a step we can take to avoid spreading COVID-19 at a large gathering. Those killed in the lineof-duty deserve our respect, gratitude, and recognition, so we will announce a new date for late summer or early fall.”

On April 24, 2020, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a field in the 25200 block of West Old Rand Road, Unincorporated Wauconda, for a report of a possible found body.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and learned three teens came across the body while collecting firewood. Deputies were led to the body, which was located in an open area.

The body was in advanced stages of decomposition. It is undetermined at this time the age of the person and if the body is that of a male or a female. There were no obvious signs of foul play.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded, and an autopsy is being scheduled. Sheriff’s Detectives and the coroner’s office continue to investigate.

Three with warrants apprehended

On April 23, 2020, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service – Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMS-GLRFTF), concluded an investigation which resulted in the apprehension of Ronnell Robinson, 22, of the 5600 block of South Bishop Street, Chicago.

Robinson, a documented street gang member, was wanted for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, as a result of an investigation conducted by the Round Lake Beach Police Department.

In September of 2019, the Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group assisted Round Lake Beach Police with a search warrant at a residence in the 36600 block of North Fairfield Road, Ingleside, where Robinson previously resided. Several firearms, including two stolen firearms, were located during the search warrant.

During the fugitive apprehension investigation, warrants deputies determined Robinson was likely avoiding apprehension at a residence in the 1500 block of Dempster Street, Mount Prospect. Members of the Sheriff’s Warrants Team surveilled the residence and located him inside. He was arrested without incident.

wanted on a Cook County warrant for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was turned over to the Cook County Jail. Jada F. Farley, 20, of the same address was also located and had an active McHenry County arrest warrant for obstructing a peace officer. She was issued a new notice to appear and released at the scene.

Robinson was transported to the Lake County Jail where he was being held on $75,000 bail All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

One car fatal traffic crash

On April 25, 2020, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the intersection of Wadsworth Road and Delany Road in Wadsworth for a traffic crash with injuries. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am with extensive damage.

Sheriff’s deputies determined the vehicle was occupied by only the male driver, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigation shows the Pontiac was traveling westbound on Wadsworth Road approaching Delany Road, at a high rate of speed.

The driver of the Pontiac lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway to the north. The Pontiac likely rolled before striking a traffic signal pole at the intersection. Due to the speed, the Pontiac wrapped around the traffic signal.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Head on crash causes two fatalities

On April 16 at 2:16 a.m., officers from the Wauconda Police Department responded to the northbound lanes of Rt. 12 near Rt. 59, for a crash involving a Honda Odyssey and a Freightliner delivery truck.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the Odyssey was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Rt. 12 when it collided into the delivery truck head on.

The 23-year-old male driver of the delivery truck was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The Odyssey was driven by a 25-yearold male and occupied by a 24-year-old passenger. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

On April 16 at 10:20 a.m. an autopsy was performed on the passenger, Montana Brown, of Gurnee. The preliminary autopsy results indicate he died of blunt force injuries caused by a motor vehicle crash. Toxicology results are pending. An autopsy was then performed on the driver, Kyle DeKruif, of Island Lake and results indicate he died of blunt force injuries caused by a motor vehicle crash. Toxicology results are also pending.

The investigation into both deaths continues by the Coroners office, the Wauconda Police Department and the Major Crash Assistance Team.

Stay-at-Home order to be extended through May

Gov. JB Pritzker said April 23 that Illinois’ novel coronavirus data necessitated an extension of his stay-at-home order through the end of May. The current executive order will expire May 1, at which time an order with “some modifications” will take effect.

• Masks will be mandatory for all residents above the age of 2, who can “medically tolerate a face covering,” when in a public place, the governor said.

• State parks will begin to open, although social distancing measures must be obeyed in them.

• Retail stores not currently deemed “essential businesses” will be allowed to take customer orders online or over the phone and can fulfill them by delivery or pick-up.

• New social distancing guidance is planned for essential businesses as well, which also in May must adhere to a new cap on customers allowed inside at one time.

• Illinoisans forced to postpone surgeries and tests so hospitals could increase capacity for COVID-19 patients will be able to begin rescheduling some of them. Both Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike declined to specify which procedures

are still under a moratorium.

Before health care centers can begin performing surgeries, their officials must meet the state health department’s “exact specifications,” Pritzker said. Hospitals must have enough personal protective gear and ensure bed capacity is sufficient to handle new COVID-19 patients. Potential procedure recipients must also be proven to not have the virus.

“I know that even with these changes, this stay-athome order leaves many restrictions in place and in the coming weeks, as we get to the point of working our way down the other side of the peak, there will be more to do to get people back to work and open up even more,” Pritzker said.

“Understand that these are not choices that are made arbitrarily,” he added. “These changes are what data says we can offer the people of Illinois without risking so much viral transmission that our hospitals will again become or potentially become overrun.”

The governor warned March and April’s restrictions will be implemented again if residents are found to be “breaking the rules.”

IDPH reported the state has over 36,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, up by 1,826 from April 22 as 8,970 test results were reported in the past

24 hours—the second-largest single-day increase. The virus has been confirmed in 96 of Illinois’ 102 counties.

That data is only one resource Pritzker said he consults when making novel coronavirus-related decisions.

He also checks the number of Illinoisans who are hospitalized, in an intensive care unit and on a ventilator.

All that information is compiled by a “cohort” of experts recruited to serve in the state’s modeling group, the governor said. The group is tasked with analyzing daily statistics and developing a projection for how many new cases and deaths will occur in Illinois over time.

Pritzker said he uses more than one model, each of which changes as new data is collected, to arrive at the best decision. They become more accurate over time.

“There is no crystal ball available to us—there are only estimates,” the governor said. “... A model is an imperfect tool that we use to add context to the actual numbers that we can chart every day— cases, fatalities, hospitalizations, positive test results, ventilator and ICU usage.”

Developing a projection is also difficult, said Nigel Goldenfeld, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and director of the National Aeronautics and

Space Administration’s Astrobiology Institute for Universal Biology.

“Modeling an epidemic is rather like modeling the trajectory of a rocket, when you don’t know where it started from, what direction it was pointing and how much fuel is aboard the rocket,” Goldenfeld said. “Modeling an epidemic is not rocket science — it’s harder.”

Early projections predicted Illinois’ COVID-19 peak— the greatest number of confirmed cases and virus-related deaths—would occur in April.

New models now show that peak is more likely to be a plateau of deaths per day between late April and early May, which is why Pritzker said he is extending the stay-at-home and social distancing orders.

The governor added that as a public official, it is important for him to use the “worst end of the model range” during a public health crisis.

“A pushing out of our estimated peak is a natural consequence, and the best indicator, that we are flattening the curve,” Pritzker said. “... Pushing the peak further down the line might not sound like good news, but I promise you, it saved lives.”

Illinois’ reopening will come in phases, Pritzker said, and his administration is finalizing the terms for the next step. He did not disclose de-

tails on Thursday of what that might look like, saying that new data can change the circumstances officials are currently expecting.

According to data shared

by Ezike, the state’s hospital bed capacity has increased slowly and been able to “maintain relatively stable levels.

GOP response In an April 23 letter to Pritzker, House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, asked for several concessions to be made in May. Many of those listed—including allowance of non-essential surgeries and other medical procedures, access to state parks and retail stores to reopen—were announced by the governor in his daily COVID-19 update as definite actions.

Durkin said those additions to May’s stay-at-home order are “the first step in moving Illinois forward” in a statement issued after the governor’s daily briefing.

Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, said in a statement his caucus submitted related recommendations and that he was “pleased” to see them reflected in Pritzker’s plans.

One thing he wanted to achieve which was not included is a “regional, phased-in

reopening,” Brady said.

“Downstate communities, while following the proper social distancing guidelines, are not seeing the same number of cases, but they’re suffering just the same economically,” he wrote.

Durkin also requested the governor’s office to share the “scientific modeling and supporting documents” decisions are based upon.

“These orders have long-lasting effects on the people and businesses of Illinois, and it is only fair to publicly share the modeling that is being used to determine these critical decisions,” he wrote. “While we all know that modeling can change, the legislative branch, our residents and business owners deserve to know what the administration is using in its decision-making process.”

Pritzker, in a response to a reporter’s question about whether he would do so, said models are not his only source of information. He later added that the data in the models belongs to the universities and academic experts that created them.

“This isn’t the only thing I’m looking at, so the idea that somehow sharing one model with people is going to somehow instruct them about what next moves we’re going to make is, I think, a fallacy,” he said.

Lake County Forest Preserves urges public to keep doing their part when using trails With four weeks of the state’s stay-at-home order under our belts, Lake County Forest Preserves Ranger Police continue to closely monitor preserves and trails to ensure safety rules, social distancing and other public health guidelines are being followed. “In general, things are going relatively well in the forest preserves; therefore, we have been able to keep them open,” said Executive Director Ty Kovach.

“We would like to thank preserve visitors for helping with this effort, as the vast majority are adhering to courtesy and safety rules,” Kovach said. “It is important that visitors continue following these practices while using preserve trails.”

Additional signs placed at trailheads remind preserve visitors to do their part and abide by rules put in place for safety reasons to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “It is our intent to keep preserves and trails open if at all possible, but it is critical that visitors help keep the preserves clean, be courteous to other trail users, and continue to follow social distancing rules,” Kovach said. However, if any specific location is no longer maintainable due to visitors not being compliant with Forest Preserve and CDC rules and guidelines, those preserves will be closed.

• When arriving, if you see the parking lot is full use our interactive trail map (www.LCFPD.org/ maps/) to find another nearby preserve.

• When in the parking lot, wait until the area near your car is clear of other nearby people before exiting or entering your car.

• Follow social distancing rules at all times by staying 6 feet apart.

• When on the trails, groups of two or more must break into single file and move to the right shoulder when approaching or passing others to allow for maximum physical distance.

• Where dogs are allowed, keep them leashed and on trails at all times, and pick up after them. Do not leave pet waste on trails or in parking lots. continue

“We also to urge trail users to follow minimum impact practices when visiting forest preserves. This means that whatever you bring into the preserve, you take back out with you,” Kovach said. “Pack it in, pack it out, and leave no trace. Take all trash with you and dispose of it at home,” he said. “We are working hard to keep the preserves safe, clean and open for you. The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, has completely changed the lives of Americans.

The kids are home from school, and often times mom and dad are home, too, due to layoffs or just working from home.

With stay-at-home orders and quarantine the past month-plus, houses are filled with people who aren’t supposed to go anywhere, which can get really old, really fast.

Parents are becoming the teachers, implementing virtual classroom lessons, and families are spending more quality time than ever, whether it’s cooking together, watching a family movie or playing board games.

But seriously, this thing could go on much longer, and many parents and kids would love to get outside and get back to “normal” life.

So what can people do?

The possibilities are endless.

Teachers are doing their part to make sure kids are still learning at home, though the school year is over.

“It’s important that parents show themselves grace and their kids, too,” said Christy Elmer, a kindergarten teacher at Waller Elementary School in Burlington,

Wis., “I know parents can be overwhelmed at this time. We teachers so appreciate the parents who are partnering with us to teach and learn.”

Elmer said kindergartners learn best through play.

“Remember to make their learning fun and hands-on. If you are doing a math activity, use some manipulatives to

count/group, or for an addition/ subtraction problem. These could be Legos, cereal, pennies, noodles, etc.,” she said.

“Playing board games is a great way for students to be learning as well. They usually require math and reading skills to play. I can’t stress reading enough. Read to your child and have them read to you. Ask

Southern Lakes Newspapers surveyed parents and area community members, so if people are looking for some ideas for their quarantine bucket list, here are some ideas.

“This brings the 10 day total to around 1,000 gallons of trash picked up, not including the hundreds of gallons of trash that friends and family picked up on their own,” Krien said on Facebook. “Thank you so much to everybody who helped out, and I encourage those who haven’t, to get out there and make a difference.”

“I absolutely love quarantine and the family time we’ve had,” LeDuc said. “I never want it to end.

I’ve pretty much been in quarantine recovering from cancer since December.

Having my family home with me has been a blessing. I’ve been able to recover without all the daily life struggles.”

Staying inside

With all this uncertain Wisconsin weather, staying

inside can be just as fun.

Kay Stritesky, of Mount Pleasant, said she has enjoyed doing arts and crafts projects with her daughter Madyson using finger paints.

Burlington’s Kristin Beison keeps a schedule to help keep her kids on task, which includes time for school work, chores, play time and family fun.

Cleaning the house, playing cards, do-it-yourself projects, reading and home haircuts were some popular responses.

Families have also been cooking and baking together.

Janet Sanchez-Bonyata, of Genoa City, said her son has perfected his pancake recipe.

Movie nights are also a big one, along with dance parties.

Katie Iselin, a Burlington native, watches a movie with her girls every afternoon.

They write movies down on a slip of paper and pick one to watch every day at 3 p.m.

“It’s exciting not knowing what we’re going to watch and we get some down time together,” Iselin said. “And we make popcorn every time.”

Giving back

Along with school work, getting outside and staying indoors to do things as a family, plenty of people are making things to give back to hospital workers and others who are on the front lines during these challenging times.

“We are printing PPE masks for the hospitals,” said Mark Ramczyk, of Waterford.

“We’re making a boat load of cloth face masks for county workers, nursing homes, health care workers and anyone else who has a need,” Berlin said.

Bonnie Weis, a former Burlington and current Waterford resident, is trying to create face masks for kids.

One example is a “Star Wars” mask.

“I’m trying to create a version of a face mask that will be comfortable for kids

come fall,” Weis said. “I bet that will be a requirement but a challenge.”

Overall, people are doing their best to keep busy during these times.

Just like students miss school and their friends, teachers miss their students.

But don’t fear, parents, teachers are available to help this big change go smoothly.

“It is challenging emotionally and professionally,” Elmer

said. “We miss our students so much. Each of our classrooms is like a little family, and it is hard not to have that anymore. It is definitely a new learning curve having to teach online.

“Not all of our students have internet or have help to get online. The district has been wonderful in helping those who don’t and letting teachers gather and send home materials for students.”

McHenry County giving taxpayers 90 day extention on first property tax installment If you’re a homeowner or business owner struggling financially because of the COVID-19 pandemic, you now have an extra 90 days to pay the first installment of your property taxes.

The McHenry County Board met remotely in emergency session on Tuesday, April 21, to approve an ordinance giving taxpayers until Sept. 15, 90 days after the June 15 due date, to pay the first installment without being charged late fees or interest. If you’re a senior citizen who qualifies for the Senior Freeze exemption, your deadline to apply for it also has been extended to Sept. 15.
