Theatre group to provide virtual Advent calendar during the month of December

Mosaic Players, a recently formed nonprofit, 501c3 theatre company, will be sharing a Virtual Advent Calendar starting at 10 a.m. on December 1, and will share a video each day until December 24. All videos will be available Dec. 25 - 31.

Advent Calendars have been a seasonal pastime helping to count down the days until December 25 with a little dose of anticipation and excitement.

This year, join the Mosaic Players throughout the month of December, as they present a special surprise each day leading up to December 25. Members of the Mosaic Players will be sharing stories, readings, songs, traditions, and so much more.

Each day at 10 a.m., the Mosaic Players will post a new video for you to enjoy virtually via their public Facebook page (@mosaicplayers), YouTube, website www. mosaicplayers.org, and Twitter. The video will be available for a day, then will be replaced by a new virtual treat the next day. All videos will then be available December 25-31.

The Mosaic Players will be announcing a fundraiser soon to help raise money for the company and their

traveling wagon stage.

They are also working on adaptations and works that we will be premiering in the Spring/Summer of 2021.

The Mosaic Players were founded in July of 2020 and is a traveling ensemble that creates and performs theatre focusing on social justice, human rights, and anti-racist issues while promoting dignity, equality, inclusiveness, understanding, and respect.

They bring theatre to audiences by creating work that speaks to the challenges, concerns, and continued learning in different communities.

The Mosaic Players will be sharing a variety of works through adapting literature; devising and deriving collaborative works, media and found works; and writing original plays.

The group is headed up

by Artistic Director, Rebecca Zellar, and the company has a founding board made up

by Cynthia Haran, Tiffany Cappel, Shola Jimoh, Ivan Ortega, Melissa Frank, Justyna Chrupek, and Connie Wurster.

Illinois presidential electors urge General Services Administration to recognize Biden and Harris

State’s presidential electors to meet Dec. 14 in Springfield amid pandemic

Plans are being developed in Illinois for the state’s Electoral College delegates to meet in Springfield on Dec. 14, but they are being complicated by the worsening COVID-19 pandemic as well as President Donald Trump’s refusal so far to concede the election.

A spokesman for Secretary of State Jesse White said Wednesday that the ceremony, which normally draws little public attention, has traditionally been held in the Statehouse. But with the entire state now under enhanced mitigation measures to prevent the spread of the disease, officials are searching for a room, or possibly another venue, that would allow enough social distancing for the state’s 20 electors, the media and the public to remain safe.

The electoral college system is spelled out in Article I of the United States Con-

stitution. It provides that each state receives the same number of electoral votes as it has in the U.S. House and Senate. Since Illinois has two U.S. senators and 18 representatives, it gets 20 electoral votes.

Originally, the candidate receiving a majority of the electoral votes became president and the second-place candidate became vice president. But that was changed in 1804 with adoption of the 12th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which provides that the president and vice president are elected in separate ballots. Since then, candidates for both offices have run on a single-party ticket.

The process was amended again in 1961 by the 23rd Amendment, which gives the District of Columbia the same number of electoral votes it would otherwise have if it were a state.

The Constitution also provides that each state will de-

termine for themselves how their electors are chosen and allocated among the candidates. Today, most states, including Illinois, operate under a “winner-take-all” system, meaning the candidates with the most popular votes receive all of the state’s electoral votes.

The two exceptions are Maine and Nebraska, which award the two votes representing their U.S. Senate seats to the popular vote winner, but the others are awarded to the winner within each congressional district.

By federal statute, every state’s electoral college is required to meet on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December, which this year falls on Dec. 14.

In Illinois, state law requires the electors to meet at 10 a.m. that day, “in a room to be designated by the Secretary (of State) in the Capitol at Springfield in this state.”

During that meeting, Secretary of State Jesse White will call the meeting to order and call the roll. The electors then will choose a chairperson to preside over the remainder of the meeting, which consists only of marking their ballots for president and vice president and counting the results.

Those results are a foregone conclusion because preliminary returns show that Democrats Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris won the popular vote in Illinois by more than a 16-point margin, although the official results won’t be certified until Dec. 4.

State law also provides that each political party designate in advance of the election the electors who will serve, should their party win, either by a state party convention or a meeting of the party’s state central committee. This year, both major parties in Illinois named their electors during central

committee meetings that were held in July.

The Democratic electoral slate in Illinois this year is led by Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, of Oak Park, and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the two atlarge electors who represent the state’s two U.S. Senate votes. The other 18 electors, representing the state’s 18 congressional districts, are primarily state central committee members from those districts.

While their official duties are limited solely to casting their ballots on Dec. 14, several have already gotten involved in trying to expedite the transition to a new presidential administration.

Although independent news media have already called the race for Biden and Harris, the Trump campaign has so far refused to concede and the Trump administration has refused to initiate a transition process.

idential Transition Act of 1963, the administrator of the General Services Administration, a presidential appointee, is called upon to determine the “apparent successful candidates” for president and vice president and provide them with office space and administrative support to begin setting up a new administration.

But that hasn’t happened yet, and as a result, several members of the Illinois Electoral College wrote to the head of the U.S. General Services Administration Nov. 13, urging her to recognize Biden and Harris as the apparent winners of the election in order to expedite the transition process.

“It has been reported you may delay ascertainment until the Electoral College meets and votes on Dec. 14,” the letter stated. “As electors to the Electoral College, we believe this delay is unnecessary, unprecedented and dangerous.”

Pritzker calls on Madigan to answer questions or step aside Indictments of former ComEd officials fuel erosion of support for House speaker

Gov. JB Pritzker has put his own pressure on House Speaker Michael Madigan, saying the Democratic leader needs to answer questions from the press and the public or else resign.

The governor’s comments during his daily COVID-19 briefing in Chicago came one day after federal prosecutors in Chicago handed down indictments against four former Commonwealth Edison officials, charging them with bribery and conspiracy in a scheme to win Madigan’s favor for legislation benefitting the company.

“If Speaker Madigan wants to continue in a position of

enormous public trust with such a serious ethical cloud hanging over his head, then he has to, at the very least, be willing to stand in front of the press and the people and answer every last question to their satisfaction,” Pritzker said. “Written statements and dodged investigatory hearings are not going to cut it. If the speaker cannot commit to that level of transparency, then the time has come for him to resign as speaker.”

The indictments charge four people—Michael McClain, a former legislator and close Madigan ally who later worked as a lobbyist at ComEd; former ComEd CEO Anne Pramaggiore; former company executive John

two years since 1983 and is currently the longest-serving state legislative speaker in U.S. history. He is also expected to seek another term as speaker when the General Assembly reconvenes in January, but his support within the ranks of House Democrats has been eroding since he was first implicated in the bribery scheme in July, when company officials entered a deferred prosecution agreement that included paying a $200 million fine.

As of Nov. 19, according to several media reports, he appeared to be short of the 60 votes needed to secure another term as speaker. At the same time, however, no other Democrat appeared to

That included measures that relaxed the state’s rate regulation process and provided ratepayer-funded subsidies for two nuclear power plants owned by ComEd’s parent company, Exelon.

Madigan himself has not been charged, and he issued a lengthy statement Nov. 19 reiterating his longstanding denial of any wrongdoing.

Madigan has served as House speaker for all but

Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is the only other announced candidate for the job, but she has attracted little vocal support from other Democrats so far.

Pritzker would not offer any comment about who he thinks should be the next speaker and he said he had not spoken to Democratic lawmakers since the indictments were released Nov. 18.

“I’ve maintained from the beginning that legislators have a right to make their own decisions about who leads them, and I continue to feel that way,” he said.

“These legislators alone hold the unique power to elect the

Illinois speaker, and I trust that they will think long and hard about the duties that they owe to the people that we all work for.”

Prior to Nov. 19, Pritzker had tried to keep some distance from the controversy, at first saying only that Madigan should resign if the allegations are proved true.

He stepped up his criticism slightly following the Nov. 3 general election, during which Pritzker’s signature graduated tax amendment went down in defeat, suggesting Madigan should step down from his role as chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois because the cloud of scandal surrounding him had become a liability for the party.

Rita Mayfield, who represents District 60 and is a member of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, helped to make this program possible by working with other state legislators to secure funding for the WEI. Students who received the first round of scholarships recently completed their programs and are starting to find jobs. Jose Garcia is one of the inaugural recipients.

“I want to show my daughter I can finish college to set an example for her,” said Garcia.

It’s a strong sentiment any parent can relate to and one found at the core of CLC’s mission to advance the communities it serves. The scholarships link to a handful of CLC’s short-term certificate or vocational programs such as the one Garcia enrolled in: automotive collision repair.

“It was fun and hands-on, said Garcia. “The opportunity helped me develop the skills and experience to become more confident in myself and auto repair.”

Working in the automotive field is a dream Garcia always wanted to pursue.

“Ever since I was small, I’ve been into cars,” recalled Garcia. “I was about two or three when I took my aunt’s car keys.

Luckily we had another car behind that car when I turned it on.”

While he had taken some auto repair classes in the past, he was unable to finish. Prior to receiving the scholarship, he was working intermittently as a painter trying to keep bills paid and food on the table.

“I don’t think I could have done it without the scholarship,” said Garcia. “I didn’t have the support or funds to continue with the pandemic and not being able to work.”

Grant coordinator, Marissa Greathouse, knows firsthand how great the need is for scholarships like this. “We’ve on-boarded students who were literally homeless. We’ve on-boarded students who were struggling single parents.

We’ve on-boarded even some DACA recipients as well and

with those students it’s extremely hard to secure financial aid or just be able to afford to attend school even with financial aid.”

Approximately 1,800 individuals applied for the first Transform Lake County scholarship. Grant funding provided 182 students with all tuition and fees, course materials, textbooks, industry exam fees and even some living expenses. The second round of funding will provide the same opportunity to 82 county residents.

“It was a great response from the community and we have a lot of people asking for more scholarships,” said Greathouse.

Under the grant requirements, most of the recipients must be African American and from underrepresented populations. Additionally, the grant stipulates recipients will successfully complete their program of study and either be employed in a full-time job paying at least $17.34 per hour (30 percent above the regional living wage) or be registered for continued training or education by October 2021. The first round of funding had similar requirements, and for Garcia that meant continuing into the apprenticeship program. However, he’s not stopping there.

“The program brought me hope for my future,” said Garcia. “The program has inspired me to continue studying at the College of Lake County and complete my associate degree.

As a first-generation college student, earning my degree means a lot to my family.”

Midwest governors urge residents to limit contact over holidays

A bipartisan group of governors from seven Midwestern states, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, issued a joint plea for residents of their states to take precautions against the spread of COVID-19 over the holiday weekend, even if that means avoiding travel and family get-togethers.

“This Thanksgiving is going to look different than others have before, and it’s because it has to,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said during a virtual joint news conference. “I know that instead of hosting a big, in-person Thanksgiving like I usually do, I’m going to be setting up a Zoom call with my fami-

ly members.”

Whitmer was joined by Pritzker, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, all Democrats, in the news conference.

Earlier, however, those governors were joined by Republican Govs. Eric Holcomb of Indiana and Mike DeWine of Ohio in releasing a joint video on social media calling on residents throughout the region to take extra precautions this year.

All of those states, as well as others in the region, have seen some of the most rapid growth rates in the nation for COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations. And the news conference came on the same

day Pritzker announced that all of Illinois was placed under Tier 3 mitigations, which include the closing of certain nonessential businesses and strict capacity limits in retail stores, fitness centers and some other establishments.

“As of our most current data, Illinois today is averaging more than 5,200 patients (per day) fighting COVID-19 in our hospitals—400 more individuals than at our spring high,” Pritzker said. “And this isn’t just in Chicago or our other cities in Illinois. It’s happening in our suburbs and our rural areas.”

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, as of Monday, Nov. 15, the most severe hospital resource

shortage was in Region 7 of the state’s mitigation plan, made up of Will and Kankakee counties, where only 12 percent of the region’s hospital medical and surgical beds, and 16 percent of intensive care unit beds remained available.

But many of the governors said they were less concerned about the availability of hospital beds than about hospital staff.

“Because every day that you have 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 cases, those include our health care workers too,” Kentucky Gov. Beshear said.

“And they’re not getting it at the hospital. They’re getting it in their communities. So, to make sure that we have

Henricks wins statewide paralegal scholarship It’s a confirmation of decisions made for College of Lake County (CLC) legal studies student Lisa Henricks. She is the Illinois Paralegal Association’s (IPA) 2020 Patricia Murphy Coleman Memorial Scholarship winner. While the scholarship honors a long-time Illinois paralegal, for Henricks, winning honors the memory of her late husband.

“One of the bravest things I’ve ever done is career jumping after becoming a widow,” said Henricks. “I wondered if I did the right thing, but I have faith in CLC.” Two years ago, Henricks was about a decade into employment with an environmental consulting firm, and two decades into a marriage with her husband, Ted Henricks. That all changed in January 2019 when he passed away from a heart attack.

Now at 51, the Grayslake High School graduate is pursuing a life-long goal.

“I reevaluated after that Lisa Henricks change in life circumstance.

I’ve always been interested in the legal field but life got in the way many, many years ago,” said Henricks. “I left stable employment to go into the legal studies program at CLC because I love the logic aspect of the law.”

This scholarship helps Henricks come closer to her dream. In order to qualify for consideration, she had to be a member of the IPA, submit her transcripts, receive two letters of recommendation and compose an essay based on the

prompt, “how do you think the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic will change the future of the paralegal profession?”

After sending everything in, and with the announcement deadline approaching, she was then told there would be one final requirement.

“I got an email from the IPA president and she said we want to do brief interview with the finalists,” said Henricks. “After they asked me to tell them about myself, they said, ‘there are really no other questions. All we want is to tell you that you won the 2020 scholarship.’”

It was all a ruse to capture Henricks’ reaction to the news that she had won the $500 prize. It was even captured on video and shared at the IPA fall education conference.

CLC legal studies department chair Gayle Miller was a part of the virtual surprise and said

of Henricks, “She’s a model paralegal student and aspiring paralegal. Her dedication and values will carry her into the professional world.”

Henricks will receive her legal studies certificate in December, and then she will be studying furiously for the Paralegal Core Competency Exam (PCCE). Something she is confident she’ll pass thanks to the preparation given to her by the college.

“The statistics on the legal studies program for job placement and success rate is just incredible,” said Henricks. In fact, the 2019 CLC pass rate for the PCCE was 86 percent; 20 percent higher than the national average.

The legal studies program at CLC is also the only American Bar Association approved paralegal education program in Lake County.

“Here, we are at capacity or very close to it,” he said.

“But it is about the people that do the hard work. We have a severe shortage of people, we’re stealing from other states. And, you know, we’re stealing from the states around us for God’s sakes.

And so the point is absolutely true. They’re getting it from the community. We have to

stop the community spread.”

Minnesota Gov. Walz said the health care workforce in his state is likewise affected by community spread of the virus outside of hospital settings.

“One of the things is child care, and schooling for these frontline workers, what they do with that,” he said. “When we start to see that community spread, it has a cascading effect. And what do they do with their own children? What happens when their school goes to distance learning?

And that’s one of the challenges of looking at this much more holistically.”

All five governors said they plan to spend Thanksgiving at home with their own immediate families.

Man arrested for possession of child pornography

Shawn M. Davy, 37, of Fox River Grove, was arrested today and charged with three counts of solicitation of child pornography and three counts of possession of child pornography.

On the morning of November 18, 2020, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois Attorney G e n e r a l ’ s Shawn Davy Office and Genoa Police Department executed a search warrant at a house in the 2100 block of Evergreen Avenue, in unincorporated Fox River Grove.

This investigation began in February 2020, by the Genoa Police Department and they contacted the Illinois Attorney General’s Office for assistance. Davy was subsequently identified as a suspect who resided in the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction.

Davy messaged a juvenile victim on a dating application and began soliciting images from the victim.

Through investigation and the execution of the search warrant, probable cause was established to charge Davy with three counts of solicitation of child pornography and

three counts of possession of child pornography.

This investigation remains open and anyone with information should contact the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 815-334-4750.

The charges against Davy are merely allegations against him and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Crash kills 76 year old pedestrian

On November 18, 2020, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Green Bay Road north of Waldo Avenue, Beach Park, for a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash with injuries. Deputies arrived and found the victim, a 76-year-old man of Beach Park, unconscious. The pedestrian had significant injuries as a result of the crash.

Beach Park Rescue arrived soon after the first-responding sheriff’s deputies.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2003 Cadillac Seville, driven by 23-year-old female of Beach Park, was traveling northbound on Green Bay Road just north of Waldo Avenue. According to witnesses, the pedestrian was attempting to cross the

street from the west side of the roadway to his driveway, which was on the east side of the roadway. As he crossed, he was struck by the northbound Cadillac.

The pedestrian was transported to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan via Beach Park Ambulance.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital he was pronounced deceased.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was contacted and is in the process of scheduling an autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Sexual predator again charged with child pornography

On November 20, 2020, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives and the Sheriff’s Warrants Team served an arrest warrant on Joshua S. Hoffman, 29, of the 35700 block of North Ash Street, Ingleside. Hoffman is a registered child sexual predator, stemming from a 2016 search warrant conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Cybercrimes Unit. At that time, Hoffman was found to be in possession of hundreds of child pornography videos.

After reviewing the facts of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of: Possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (class 3 felony), and two counts of possession of a controlled substance (class 4 felonies).

Additional charges are likely after a forensic examination is conducted of the electronics seized from Hoffman’s residence and following additional testing of the controlled substances seized.

Hoffman remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing this morning.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Mother charged with DUI and child endangerment in two vehicle crash

On November 17, 2020 at 6:35 p.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Lakewood Police Department, Huntley Police Department, and the Huntley Fire Protection District, responded to a two vehicle crash involving a 2014 Ford Escape and a 2007 Toyota Tacoma on Illinois Route 47 at Foster Road, in unincorporated Huntley.

On scene investigation indicated that the Ford, driven

by Melissa E. Sanchez, 37, of Highland Park, was traveling southbound on Illinois Route 47 and crashed into the rear of the Toyota, driven by a 23 year old Union man, which was stopped in traffic attempting to turn east onto Foster Road. Alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor for the crash.

Sanchez was transported to Northwestern Huntley Hospital for minor injuries.

Her two juvenile children, who were in child restraints, were evaluated by EMS and were later turned over to a family member. The driver of the Toyota was evaluated

by EMS and refused further medical treatment. The road was shut down for short period of time while first responders worked the scene.

DCFS was notified of the incident. Sanchez received citations for: Driving under the influence of alcohol (class A), Child endangerment x2 (class A), Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident (petty), Illigal transportation of alcohol, driver (petty), and failure to notify of address change (petty). Her initial court date is set for December 10, 2020.

The charges against Sanchez are merely allegations.

This November, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives became aware that Hoffman was engaged in inappropriate electronic conversations with a 12-year-old girl from Edwardsville, IL. During these conversations, Hoffman solicited and received nude images from the child. During at least one online video conversation, Hoffman exposed his nude body to the child.

The Edwardsville Police Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, and Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office collaborated, and a search warrant was obtained for Hoffman’s residence on November 19, 2020. Additionally, Madison County issued an arrest warrant for Hoffman on November 12, 2020 for two counts of child pornography (one being a class X felony and one being a class 1 felony) and grooming (class 4 felony). A Madison County Judge set the bond on the warrant at $500,000.
