Local queens and teens gather for Centennial Park clean up day Lindsey Lubicz, Miss Antioch 2020, hosted a Antioch Teen Volunteer Team Fall Park Clean up Day on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The event was sponsored by the Village of Antioch Park and Recreation and was held at Centennial Park from 10 a.m. to noon.

members, and several other local queens gathered at the park to do the clean up. They pulled weeds, raked leaves, picked up branches, scrubbed bricks and cleaned the playground.

Volunteers from this well attended clean up wore masks and spread out during the event.

Afterwards they were treated to a pizza party.

Online women’s health, stress management retreat offered Oct. 22-25 For women juggling the demands of child-rearing, working, spousal relationships and maybe an ailing, aging parent or two, stress can overwhelm — and that’s before you toss into the mix a little thing like a global pandemic.

The health-care pros at North Shore Pro-Active Health plan a virtual women’s retreat designed not only to help women cope, but also to thrive through this hot mess known as 2020.

The online event will begin with an evening icebreaker Thursday, Oct. 22, said Drs. Jordan Leasure and Jade Dellinger, the sister chiropractors who run North Shore Pro-Active on Lake Street in Libertyville.

Throughout the weekend, those reserving a space at a cost of $117 can avail themselves of some or all of the dozen individual workshops that are planned, including Leasure and Dellinger, each is offered by an expert in her field. Topics include everything from meditation to nutrition, skin care, meal planning, exercise, and, of course, healthy ways to manage stress.

“The October retreat is going to have a family fo-

cus,” said Leasure, who created the program. “Whether that means the kids have started e-learning and the stress that working parents are facing or the stress associated with having aging parents we are unable to visit or the stress of living alone at an especially isolating time — it all counts.”

Margie Burba of Beach Park attended North Shore’s first virtual women’s retreat in July, and said she’d highly recommend the experience.

“It allowed me to reset my mindset, and to know that I’m not alone,” said Burba, 52, a wife and mother of three adult children. “During all of this, having my own business, trying to get it established, my dad just turned 90 and my mom is 87. She suffered some health issues at the beginning of the year ...I’m so glad that I made the time for the retreat.

“You’ll never regret doing this,” she continued. “That’s for sure.”

Dellinger, who has expertise in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic, said she espe-

cially looks forward to giving a joint talk with Leasure on the potential effects of present-day stress on future generations.

Both Dellinger and Leasure said any woman of any age, whether single or part of a large brood, will benefit.

The key is to ensure that they set aside the time and have a private, uninterrupted space where they can fully enjoy it. Some women who find it difficult to have privacy in their busy homes booked a hotel room to attend the July virtual retreat, the chiropractors said.

“Stress suppresses the immune system. You can’t perform as optimally at work.

Time spent with your kids is spent worrying instead of enjoying each other’s company,” Dellinger said. “We will have 10 experts in their field help to guide the group toward relieving that stress ASAP.” Leasure said participants will receive a password to attend the sessions via Zoom. They can also choose to click into the Facebook simulcast, available by private group invitation.

McHenry County launching COVID-19 metrics dashboard The McHenry County Health Department (MCHD) is launching a public-friendly, educational data dashboard on its website with countywide health metrics to help guide school districts with making decisions around returning students to the classroom.

The dashboard is also designed to increase transparency and raise public awareness and understanding around key COVID-19 metrics, including the County’s incidence rate, test positivity, the number of COVID-19 cases and hospital admis-

sions. The metrics were the outcome of a collaborative effort amongst the County, MCHD and superintendents to achieve consensus and maintain consistency.

Growing greener energy: CLC expands solar power fields College of Lake County’s new science building is among the greenest buildings in Illinois, but it doesn’t stop there. The college is expanding solar energy on campus this fall. Verde Solutions will install solar panels on two acres of land on the west side of campus and atop the roofs of six buildings. Once complete, the college will receive

nearly 20 percent of its electricity needs from these solar installations.

Affordability is everything and thanks to the Future Energy Jobs Act of 2016, the college can finance this solar development through a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Verde Solutions. There is no upfront cost for the installation

of solar panels and CLC will save about $32,000 a year buying greener power generated from the panels right here on campus. After 20 years, the college will own the solar panels.

“Solar energy is much cleaner and greener than traditional sources of electricity,” said CLC sustainability manager David Husemoller.

“The college set the goal of carbon neutrality by 2042 and growing solar energy on campus will help us meet our climate goals and leave a greener legacy for future generations.”

CLC is committed to conserving resources, reducing its carbon footprint and inspiring its students to become innovative problem

solvers. The campus hosts a sustainability trail with interpretive signage to help visitors to appreciate innovation in practice. The CLC campus is a living laboratory for sustainability, not just a place to learn but also a place to learn from.

My grandma would be proud.

But back to the important stuff: food. Who cares about cleaning when you can eat?

I don’t have room for all of my culinary discoveries and practices, but I can share a couple. Perhaps this tangent will warrant a second installment.

Let’s start with granola.

It’s pretty obvious that you start with oats and nuts (I used walnuts). Here’s my recipe: 1 cup oats, 1/3 cup walnuts, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 2 tablespoons coconut oil and 2 tablespoons honey. Place oats, chopped walnuts, salt and cinnamon in a bowl and stir. Melt coconut oil and mix with honey. Stir into the oats mixture. Place on a non-stick sprayed cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Stir and continue baking for another 6 - 10 minutes or so. Check often to make sure you don’t over bake. Cool. At this point you can add other ingredients of your choice – dried fruit, chocolate chips etc. Store in the fridge in a plastic bag or (more environmentally friendly) a glass canning jar.

Granola is yummy with… yogurt! Make your own with only two ingredients: milk and unsweetened yogurt with active cultures (most any yogurt from the store fills this bill.) Find a covered bowl you will use to store your yogurt.

I use a large empty yogurt container. Fill nearly full with milk. Pour the milk into a pot and heat slowly on the stove until the milk reaches 200

This fall, Carthage welcomes more than 700 new students who have persevered through trying circumstances to start the next leg of their educational journey.

This accreditation takes place every five years, and standards are updated to reflect the latest evidence and practices for helping children, Flanigan said.

To become accredited, the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center needed to meet required standards in: • Case review • Multi-Disciplinary Team Representation • Cultural Competency and Diversity • Forensic Interviews • Victim Support and Advocacy • Medical Evaluation and Partnership • Mental Health Services • Case Tracking • Organizational Capacity • Child Focused Setting The need for accreditation at the center was heightened due to the amount of funding the LCCAC brings in to help children around Lake County. Under Mike Nerheim’ s leadership, the LCCAC has grown to become the second largest preforming center in Illinois, Flanigan said.

“I want to express my gratitude to my staff for making this extremely difficult and time-consuming accreditation possible,” Nerheim said. “Their ability to rise up and complete the hard work necessary to make this happen, especially during these challenging times, is praiseworthy. Once again, they went above and beyond.”

The LCCAC provided advocacy to over 3,998 youth and family members in 2019.

In addition, the LCCAC did more than 120 presentations in the community for adults and children on their services and prevention outreach. Those presentations educated over 2,800 kids and over 3,200 adults.

Between 2016 and 2021, the grant funding at the LCCAC has increased by 136 percent and the LCCAC Friends Committee raised over $250,000 toward the beautification of the facility. Over last three years, there has been a staff increase to include a juvenile advocate, two on-site mental health providers, additional staff from the state’s attorney’s office, an on-site employee from the Department Children and Family Services, and a new medical facility due to be completed in October.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office Children’s Advocacy Center is on the verge of becoming re-accredited through the National Children’s Alliance (NCA).

Carrie Flanigan, Executive Director of the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center, said the center “has been recommended for re-accreditation” to the NCA and that all expectations are that the final approval will be voted on at the NCA’s October board meeting.

“The National Children’s Alliance site reviewers summed up their review by saying the LCCAC staff was one of the most authentic and genuine staff they have seen,” Flanigan said. “That comment best exemplifies the spirit of the advocacy center. An interagency coordinated response to child victimization is effective when all the professionals work together provide a professional and compassionate response.”

Flanigan said accreditation guarantees that the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center is providing the most consistent and evidence-based interventions to the children being served. It also shows the advocacy center is at the forefront with best practices to make sure children who are physically and/or sexually abused are being treated with the best model in the country.

“Mike Nerheim has taken a hands-on approach to the development of the team that runs the center and the team thrives on his guidance,” said LCCAC Board Member Charles May, of Libertyville.

To ensure children across the United States served by Children’s Advocacy Centers receive consistent, evidence-based, services to help them heal from abuse, the more than 700 centers across the nation are required to become accredited by meeting the National Children’s Alliance Standards for Accredited Members.

In addition, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Illinois (CACI) works closely with each chapter to ensure policy and procedure comply with the NCA requirements.

Fancy, name-brand, Greek yogurt is often more than double the cost of regular yogurt, which has all the same probiotic benefits of the Greek stuff. Regular yogurt simply has more whey (liquid).

Greek yogurt has more of the whey removed and is therefore thicker.

You can do the same at home by straining your yogurt through cheesecloth or even coffee filters. I used to spend $4 for a tub of Greek yogurt before discovering the regular stuff for about $2.

Now I make my own for less than half that price. And there are no additives. It’s the real deal.

We’ve been living in quarantine mode for six months. During this time, I’ve tried to stay positive. I’ve attempted to see the glass as half-full, except lately my glass isn’t half full of water.

We’ve been on lockdown (or semi-lockdown) for nearly six months. It’s been interesting, to say the least.

I attempt to see my life as though the glass is half-full.

What have these months of quarantine given me? In a word, time. Time to learn new things, or get back to the things I already knew, but didn’t have time for in my very, awfully, totally busy pre-quarantine existence.

A few of my activities involve science experiments in the kitchen, aka food manipulation. It’s interesting, how complex food items become simple when you discover how to make them yourself. And it feels good.

Making something from scratch. It creates a feeling of sustainability in your life, and I think we could all benefit from a bit of sustainability just about now.

In the last two days I’ve made granola, yogurt, pesto, no-need to knead yeast bread, balsamic vinaigrette, mozzarella cheese and catnip tea – and I didn’t even break a sweat. Maybe there is an upside to COVID after all.

The upside goes double for my bathroom scale, unfortunately.

Speaking of bathrooms, I also made my own wet wipes (not a food item, but a recipe for success during these COVID days of wet wipe shortages.) I’ve heard we won’t get our hands on the pre-made items until 2021, but that’s conjecture. I could tell you to use toilet paper or paper towels moistened with disinfecting cleaner, but TP and PT are in short supply as well.

Some of the most desperate among us have actually reverted to using cloth rags, which can be washed and reused after cleaning the toilet.

State Senate committee focuses on drug penalty reform, elderly parole

The Illinois Senate Criminal Law Committee and Special Committee on Public Safety held its latest in a series of hearings related to the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ legislative agenda Sept.

30, focusing on reclassifying offenses, drug penalty reform and elderly parole.

“We must confront the vast disparities in how individuals throughout the state are sentenced,” state Sen. Elgie Sims, a Chicago Democrat and chair of the Senate Criminal Law Committee, said.

“We have to ensure that our justice system treats everyone fairly regardless of their race, religion and economic status. That often is not the case. These issues are important to achieve a more fair and equitable system.”

Witnesses testifying before the committee included Tanya Woods, executive director of the Westside Justice Center; Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz; White County State’s Attorney Denton Aud; Ben Ruddell, director of criminal justice policy for the Illinois ACLU; and representatives from Restore Justice Illinois.

Witnesses generally agreed that changes made to reduce penalties for crimes involving cannabis, along with the expungement of minor cannabis-related drug crimes following marijuana legalization last year, were positive steps forward.

Ruddell noted the war on drugs and drug crimes in general have harshly impacted black Americans more than any other demographic “In 1980 our prison population was 11,768.

Today it stands at more than 30,000. Despite a decades-long decline in the overall crime rate, data shows that increased drug arrests by the police and the enactment of punitive sentencing policies for drug offenses were major drivers in the spike in incarceration,” Ruddell said.

In 2018, Ruddell said, 60 percent of those arrested for a drug crime in Illinois were black.

“While black Illinoisans make up 14.5 percent of the state’s population, they make up 54.8 of those in prison and are imprisoned at 8.8 times the rate of whites, one of the worst disparities of any state,” he said.

Isolated to drug crimes, the disparities are larger.

Between 2016 and 2018, black Illinoisans made up 69 percent of drug offenders admitted to the Illinois Department of Corrections, and 59 percent of strictly cannabis offenders.

Ruddell suggested three reforms to combat these disparities: reduction of all drug crimes by one class; reclassification of felony possession to a misdemeanor; and elimination of mandatory minimums and sentence enhancements. Lawmakers discussed the third point in a previous joint hearing.

Wendell Robinson, from Restore Justice Illinois, said as a juvenile he was sentenced to life in prison for violent crimes. Robinson served more than 25 years before being released in 2018 after a 2012 Supreme Court decision that made mandatory life sentences without parole for juvenile offenders unconstitutional.

Robinson cited a Justice Policy Institute study of 200 elderly prisoners in Maryland who were jailed as juveniles and released as result of a ruling by the Maryland Supreme Court. The median age of the individuals was 64 and they had served 34 years on average. Over a 6-year period upon release, the group had a 3 percent recidivism rate. That was far lower than the national average of 43 percent of those released from prison being incarcerated again, according to a 2011 Pew research study.

“A lot of guys that we are talking about that could potentially be parolees are people that are near and dear to me like friends. These are individuals that helped shape and mold the man that I became today,” Robinson said. “I know a lot of elderly guys [in prison] I still keep in communication with about these guys, they are like extremely positive individuals, but they just need a second chance.”

The hearing was the fifth prompted by Black Caucus’ push to promote its agenda, which is based on four pillars: Criminal justice reform, violence and police accountability; education and workforce development; economic access, equity and opportunity; and health care and human services.

The caucus plans to advance legislation to address each pillar during the upcoming veto session, which is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 and Dec. 1-3.
