Some of us are chasing a challenge that is a polar opposite of our comfortable lifestyles. We may find the most excitement by stripping life down to the bare essentials, or we may require a few extra creature comforts to make the trip more tolerable. But no matter what the trip requires, we call it camping.

What do we need to survive?

For some, this statement drives every choice when planning for an adventure.

You may have a backpack, a tent, some simple rations, a pair of sturdy boots, water and a sleeping bag or a hammock.

For others, this may mean a few more amenities like clean drinking water and a

IS “GLAMPING” A REAL WORD? Flashback to more than 10 years ago – “glamping” was a made-up concept which combined the words glamorous and camping to describe an elevated camping experience.

However, as travelers picked up on the glamping craze, the concept spread like wildfire across the globe.

So much so that in 2018, MerriamWebster dictionary added the term to their official list of words. So, yes – “glamping” is now a real word!

HOW DO YOU TURN CAMPING INTO GLAMPING? To turn a camping trip into a glamping experience, all you need is some awesome lodgings, those luxuries and essentials you just can’t do without, plus, a little bit of creativity.

The main difference between a more traditional camping experience and a glamping trip are those bonus amenities that make your stay all the more comfortable and the special things that you bring along that you know will take your trip to the next level.

Glamping is all about making your camping experience comfy and luxurious. Electricity, plush blankets, running water, mood lighting, scrumptious meals – all these creature comforts and more are what make glamping an ideal vacation for many.

Or, maybe you don’t need to trek over summits and ravines to have a perfect time outdoors. You have a nice, comfortable tent big enough to stand in, a cooler and some camp chairs. Your idea of roughing it at a campsite is just as valid — your adventure is realized simply by being outside, relaxing by a campfire, brought alive by leaving so much of the modern world behind you.

For many, some degree of roughing it encapsulates the draw of the outdoors. The simplest of simple lives, the break from distractions and opportunity for to unplug and be in the moment make camping an ideal break from everyday life. But for others, a popular movement that offers additional creature comforts is the perfect way to experience the outdoors.

What is glamping?

“Glamping,” short for glamorous

camping, has become a mainstay of outdoor recreation over the past decade. If your essentials list contains things such as a real mattress, running water or an actual toilet, you can still find numerous options that bridge the gap between traditional camping and the comforts of home. Here are just a few examples of such opportunities: Camping cabins – These offer a roof over your head, four walls and a bed to sleep in. No need to worry about packing a tent or an air mattress.

You know your kids better than anyone. Because glamping often offers additional amenities than a traditional camping trip, it may be the best answer to your family’s needs.

Opening a new business is tough in the best of times. Opening a new business amid a pandemic is downright scary.

For Simona and Jeremy Ebner, owners of Camp Kettlewood in East Troy, opening the camp in 2020 was a huge unknown.

“I can tell you, we were really nervous last year,” Simona said. “With what happened last year, a lot of businesses were hurting, we were pretty worried. What if this was a mistake? But it turns out, people needed a place to go and escape from what was going on in a safe way.

“I think we made it easy to really enjoy yourself and stay safe in your own little bubble. We booked up quickly and got great feedback and reviews, but, honestly, to see everyone enjoy what we had done was really the exciting part.”

The Ebners purchased the old Oak

Knoll Girl Scout Camp at W3524 Highway 20, East Troy, in June 2019 and spent a year cleaning up the campgrounds and renovating the lodge. Bringing the old campgrounds up to code was a big undertaking and the Ebners didn’t want to lose the “antique” feel of the site.

The decision to create a “glamping” campground came from Jeremy’s love of rustic camping and Simona’s desire for a few more amenities.

“It’s a great way to introduce someone to camping,” Simona said. “It’s a way to dip your toe into it. If they want to go out and pitch a tent later, great! This is perfect for first-time campers to get a feel for things.”

Jeremy has come to appreciate the “glamping” aspect of the sites.

“For me, just not having to do the set up and take town, that’s a lot, I just dread that,” he said. “It’s just a cool way to show up and start camping. You get to enjoy the

outdoors right away.”

Because the COVID-19 pandemic is still part of everyday life, the safety measures the Ebners put in place last year at the campsites are still in place. They included bathroom facilities that are assigned to each campsite, disposable cutlery and glasses, paper plates, and a thorough cleaning of the campsites and trailers after each guest departs. Even the cleaning supplies are assigned to each site.

The campgrounds are not open to the public and only people with reservations are allowed on the site.

Because of the outdoor setting and isolated campsites, facemasks are not required, but people can certainly wear them if they want, Simona said.

The campsite is almost completely booked for this year, Simona said. As of press time, they did have some weekdays available, but all the weekends were taken.

This 1977 Airstream Land Yacht is located on Camp Kettlewood’s Mushroom Gulch campsite.

The camper sleeps four and the campsite can accommodate an additional two tents.

Camp Kettlewood has four campsites in total – one rustic site and three “glamping” sites.

The sites feature a 1977 Airstream, a 1957 Holly camper and a 1957 “canned ham,” which is new this year.

Kettlewood also has a group campsite called “The Hilton.”

The Ebners kept the original Girl Scout names for the sites as sort of a homage.

The Hilton, has platform tents with canvas overlays, electricity and mosquito netting all around them, stapled to the sides.

The Hilton tents have extra plush mattresses with high thread count sheets and antique camping decorations.

The other campsites are: The Prairie, with the 1957 “canned ham;” Oak Knoll, which features the 1957 Holly camper, which has one double bed and one twin bed; and Mushroom Gulch, which is home to the 1977 Airstream camper and a view of the campsite’s ponds. The camper has one double bed and two twin beds.

“Each site has 1 to 2 acres all to yourself,” Jeremy said. “We’ve got everything all set up for you, all you need to do is show up and enjoy yourself.”

Camp Kettlewood is on 80 acres of old-growth forest, shaded nature trails

and protected wetlands, according to the website.

The Ebners are already planning future expansions, Jeremy said.

“We have approval for 57 units over 28 sites,” he said. “So we have big plans for that. And hopefully next year maybe a

wedding venue, can’t make any promises, but we’re looking at that for our 2022 expansion.”

No swimming is available but kayaks and canoes are welcome.

How to reduce risk for Lyme

disease

When the weather warms up and hours of daylight increase, few people can resist the allure of the great outdoors. Nature beckons each spring, and those answering that call must do so safely.

Lyme disease is a potential threat for people who live in certain regions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Lyme disease cases have been reported in nearly every state, though residents in certain states are more vulnerable than others. For example, CDC data indicates that incidence rates were highest in several states in New England, including Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, while rates in Oklahoma, Missouri and Wyoming were especially low.

Lyme disease is spread by the bite of an infected tick. Playing, hiking, camping, or working in wooded or grassy places where instances of Lyme disease are high increases a person’s risk of being bitten. But that doesn’t mean those in areas like New England, the mid-Atlantic or the upper-midwest must avoid such activities. However, they should take steps to prevent tick bites when going out into the great outdoors.

Recognize where ticks live

The CDC reports that blacklegged ticks cause Lyme disease and that such ticks live in moist and humid environments. In addition, the Lyme Disease Association notes that ticks are most likely to be in certain areas, including woods, areas where woods meet lawns and where lawns meet fields.

Ticks also may be living in tall brush/grass, under leaves, under ground cover, near stone walls or wood piles, or in shady

Ticks pose a threat when spending time in the great outdoors. Various preventive measures can help people reduce their risk for Lyme disease.

areas. Ticks also may be drawn to areas around bird feeders or outdoor areas designated for pets.

Wear insect repellent

The CDC recommends wearing insect repellents registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Repellents should contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. The EPA even has a tool on its website that can help people choose the right repellent products for them. That tool can be found at www.epa.gov/insectrepellents/find-repellent-right-you.

The CDC advises people to treat clothing and gear, including socks and tents, with products containing 0.5 percent permethrin, which can remain protective even after several washings. Pretreated clothing may be protective even longer.

Ticks can be found anywhere on the body, and the CDC recommends checking for ticks every day. Pay particular attention to underarms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, the back of the knees, in and around all head and body hair, between the legs, and around the waist.

Species identification

Before the trip, research the different plant and animal species you will likely encounter and what role each one plays in the ecosystem. From birds to bugs to shrubs, keep a checklist on hand and have your family identify as many species as they can.

Enjoy safe bike rides Riding a bicycle is not only a great way to help the planet by reducing vehicle emissions, but it’s also an ideal physical activity.

According to Harvard University, biking at a moderate speed of 12 to 13.9 miles per hour will cause a 155-pound person to burn 298 calories in 30 minutes. At a faster rate of 14 to 15.9 miles per hour, a person of the same weight will burn 372 calories.

People can ride bikes at any time of year, but cycling is most popular when temperatures are moderate and precipitation is low.

Bike riding has always been in fashion, but it experienced a boost in popularity when people were asked to remain socially distant for COVID-19. Walks and bike rides at a safe distance from others became popular and accessible ways to get fresh air and exercise.

Anyone who rides a bike needs to take certain precautions.

Cyclists often share the roads with large and powerful cars and trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns there were 857 cyclists killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2018. Safety is a two-way street, requiring diligence by drivers and bike riders.

• Bike riders should be dressed in bright clothing so they can be seen. A well-fitting bicycle helmet is a must, and should be worn every time a bike is ridden.

• Equip your bike with a horn, bell and bright headlight.

• Cyclists should ride in the same direction as traffic on the far right-hand side.

• Ride a bike that fits you well. If the bike is too big, it can be difficult to control.

• Carry items in a backpack or strapped to the back of the bike so belongings do not become obstacles.

• Drivers should remain alert of cyclists sharing the road and give wide clearance when possible.

• Vehicle drivers should look in their side mirrors and around them before opening car doors so they do not accidentally knock a cyclist passing by off the bike.

• Safe Kids suggest using hand signals to alert others to your plans. Cyclists can extend the left arm out for a left turn; make a 90-degree angle with the left arm to indicate a right turn. Putting the left arm down with the palm facing backward indicates stopping or slowing.

TIPS FOR FAMILY CAMPING TRIPS For nature lovers, perhaps nothing is more enjoyable than packing up the camping gear, traveling to a favorite campsite and getting away from it all while sleeping under the stars. Such an experience can be transformative, turning first-time campers into lifelong enthusiasts.

The opportunity to turn youngsters into nature enthusiasts who can’t wait to spend time outside may be one reason why so many families go camping. A 2018 report Kampgrounds of America found that 52 percent of campers have children, making camping among the most popular and family-friendly ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

Camping with youngsters can help families make lasting memories. Parents who have never before taken their children camping may benefit from employing a few strategies to make the trip as fun as possible.

Make a trial run in the backyard A night camping in the backyard won’t be exactly the same as a night in the woods, where wildlife, and particularly insects, may be less welcoming hosts. But a backyard camping night can acclimate children to their sleeping bags and their tents. Let kids help when choosing camping equipment Youngsters may be more excited about camping if they’re allowed to choose certain equipment, including their sleeping bags and tents. Before visiting your nearby camping retailer, explain to kids that tents come in various styles because they’re designed to protect campers from certain elements that may be more common in certain areas than others. Such an explanation can make it easy to explain to youngsters why you’re purchasing certain items, even if those items weren’t kids’ top

The advantages of RV travel Individuals who are approaching retirement or those who already have said goodbye to the working world may find they are ready to make some life changes.

Travel is something many older adults enjoy when they have much more free time to see the sights.

Recreational vehicles are great ways for people to get out and about. An RV is more than just a way to get around; for many people it becomes a lifestyle. According to the RV Industry Association, about 10 million American households own RVs. There have been more RVs on the road in recent years, and there are now more facilities to accommodate them.

RVIA says there are now roughly 18,000 campgrounds around the country, and certain facilities are pushing to improve and upgrade campgrounds in national parks and on federal lands.

Inexpensive travel/living RVers may be attracted by the idea of low-cost travel that doesn’t involve hotels and airfare and greatly reduces their reliance on restaurants while traveling.

RVs can be rented for roughly $100 to $500 per day, and RV parks usually run between $35 and $50 per night, according to Allianz Travel Insurance. To keep the costs down even more, certain truck stops, big box retailers, churches, hotels, movie theaters, casinos, rest stops and other roadside locations will allow free overnight parking. Just verify before staying to avoid being ticketed.

Plenty of help Others who have embraced the RV lifestyle tend to be very friendly and ready to make new acquaintances at campgrounds and other stops. Those with more experience may be willing to share their expertise and pitch in to offer tips for better excursions.

Downsize The RVIA says that RVs are available across a wide range of price points. So if the idea is to trade in a stationary house for an RV, you may be able to do so for as little as $6,000 to as much as $500,000.

High hopes for 2021 Camp Edwards looks forward to new season

YMCA Camp Edwards in East Troy is preparing for this year’s summer season after a successful 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The year-round camp was one of the few in the state that opened its summer camps in 2020 and Executive Director Jody Heimos

said the camp’s success last year has given them a good framework for the summer season.

“Many of the safety measures we instituted last year will still be in place, but we’ve expanded our capacity a bit,” Heimos said.

“We’ll be masking where appropriate and doing the cleaning, following what the CDC and American Camp Association is

recommending. We still have all the handwashing stations and hand-sanitizing stations set up, too.”

Heimos said they are once again recommending families isolate for 10 days before sending their children to camp, along with daily health screenings, and for families to isolate 10 days after the children return home.

Lake Geneva Youth Camp is ready to welcome back a complete summer of camping this year following a challenging 2020 that saw a 50% reduction in staff and a temporary shutdown. There is a variety of activities available at camp, including tubing.

there is some risk, the benefits of providing kids a chance to be outside and be at camp with other kids outweigh those risks.

“You just look at the news and see the reports of kids with depression and upticks in the suicide rate, and the risk is minimal to kids with COVID, so we feel this is important.

They need the social interaction, the fresh air, activities and relationships. We’re not built for isolation, we’re built to be together.”

Heimos added that the feedback the camp received from families last year was positive and encouraged them to continue.

“In my 16 or 17 years of doing this, I’ve never seen so many emails saying how important it was to send the kids to camp,” he said. “Even the parents who didn’t feel comfortable about sending their kids at the time said they thought it was good. We never once got someone who said, ‘I can’t believe you’re doing this!’”

While people are hoping for things to return to normal in the coming months, Heimos said summer camp will go on and they were hoping by fall they will be able to welcome back large school groups and other

outings.

“We’re open. We’ve been open and we’re willing to serve.”

About Camp Edwards Edwards YMCA Camp is at N8901 Army Lake Road, East Troy. The camp is open year round.

“We rely on the families to take this seriously,” he said. “We had zero issues last year. We had a couple of scares, but no confirmed cases of COVID, so that was good.

When the kids come home, we just want them to isolate and especially stay away from anyone who is in a high-risk group. We want to keep everyone safe.”

For the most part, the camp will operate as it did in 2020, with campers separated into groups that rotate together through different activities. The groups will be a bit larger this year, however.

Heimos credited the families and the staff for last year’s success.

“The staff was great about making smart choices and so were the families. We couldn’t have done this without everyone making smart choices,” Heimos said.

The summer sessions have already filled up, Heimos said.

“We were 90% after the first week of registration,” he said. “We still have some spots open in day camp, but resident camp is completely full with a waiting list.”

Lake Geneva Youth Camp and Conference Center and Conference Point Center were limited last summer by the coronavirus pandemic. But the camp’s director said the goal to provide a place set apart for campers and guests to have lifechanging experiences never changed.

The camps operate throughout the year serving thousands of young people, families and adults annually, supported by hundreds of volunteer staff of dedicated

individuals.

Christiaan Snedeker, executive director for Lake Geneva Camps and Conference, said the pandemic led to a forced shutdown early in the 2020 season, but that’s only part of the story.

“It was a year when God showed his faithfulness through the generous donors, courageous campers who still came and participated responsibly, the wisdom of our board, and the tireless work of our staff… we still saw hundreds of campers make decisions for Christ,” Snedeker

said. “Our theme moving forward has been ‘Courageous Ministry’ and God has blessed that for His glory.”

Snedeker said the pandemic has been brutal for everyone in the hospitality industry, and as it relates to the goal of the camps, it was also devastating on people physically – and maybe more importantly, spiritually.

“It’s heartbreaking when that doesn’t happen – when we can’t help people connect with each other, and most importantly, hear the love of God as

Safety is a priority This year, there is a full schedule of camps slated as well as numerous precautions in place in an effort to keep campers safe in the midst of the lingering pandemic.

“Safety is a huge value for our ministry,” Snedeker said.

Lake Geneva Camps and Conferences is following guidance from partners in the health care industry including doctors, nurses and the Centers for Disease Control.

Steps in place include: • Ensuring clean rooms; • Health screenings for all guests and self-screening for staff daily; • Hand sanitation dispensers in common and dining areas as well as encouragement to wash hands and use hand sanitizer; • Social distancing; • Facemasks worn by campers, leaders and staff when appropriate; • Limiting the number of non-program staff, visitors and vendors on the properties; • Extra safety in food service such as servers wearing facemasks and spacing tables further apart; • Separation in sleeping areas to abide by social distancing guidelines.

Camps offered Lake Geneva Youth Camp offers a variety of family getaways, youth camps and day camps.

Classic camps slated for 2021 include the following: • Primary camp for grades 1-3, July 7 to 10; • Junior girls for grades 3-6, June 27 to July 3; • Junior high girls for grades 6 -9, June 27 to July 3; • Junior boys for grades 3-6, July 11 to 17; • Junior high boys for grades 6-9, July 11 to 17; • Junior co-ed for grades 3-6, July 18 to 24; • Junior high co-ed for grades 6-9, July

18 to 24; • Teen camp 1 for grades 9-12, July 7 to 10; • Teen camp 2 for grades 9-12, July 25 to 28; • Teen camp 3 for grades 9-12, July 28 to 31.

Prices vary between $279 and $569 though discounts are available, including when bringing a friend who has never attended summer camp at LGYC, a large enough group of campers return to fill a cabin and for those who attend a second week of camp.

Year-round and summer activities available include: climbing wall, zip line, volleyball, basketball, paintball, hiking trails, archery, a giant slip-n-slide, swimming, team building, skiing and wakeboarding, banana boat and speedboat rides, fishing, canoeing and paddle boats.

Retreats are also an option with groups encouraged to book with either Lake Geneva Youth Camp or Conference Point Center. A retreat is not a cookie-cutter version of the one before it.

“Each group is unique and has a special mission it’s trying to accomplish. The goal is to tailor each aspect of a retreat to meet the specific needs of the group so it can accomplish the ministry objectives,” it states.

Working weekend

There is a Work and Worship weekend coming up in a couple of weeks that allows people to volunteer to put their skills to work on various projects. Specific details are yet to be decided for the 2021 event but may include cleaning, painting, clearing brush and debris, trimming trees, mulching and splitting wood.

“This is your opportunity to help us cultivate an incredible platform to share the good news of the Lord Jesus with our campers and guests in the year ahead,” according to the website.

Work and Worship weekend will be held May 7 and 8 at Lake Geneva Youth

Camp and children as well as families are welcome. Participants can help out one or two days of the weekend, with an option to stay overnight for free.

Registration is required so proper accommodations in regards to meals and lodging can be made.

History of ministry The history of Lake Geneva Camps and Conferences features a blending of two camp legacies. Conference Point Center opened in 1873 and has been ministering to guests for over 147 years. Lake Geneva Youth Camp opened in 1950 with the purpose of sharing God’s love with children in an environment away from the distractions of city life.

Lake Geneva Conference Center began serving church and church-affiliated groups soon after the camp opened.

In 2010, a formal partnership took place between these two ministries under the leadership of Lake Geneva Foundation; joining the camps in vision and purpose.

Snedeker said they are still hiring staff for this summer, which is “definitely more a mission than a job.”

Registrations for camps are currently being accepted but Snedeker said activity is picking up so he suggests those interested do so soon.

He said they are excited to see families and campers in all of the programs this year.

“We believe camp is almost exactly what the doctor would order… knowing you have purpose beyond one year of your life and beyond a pandemic,” Snedeker said.

So that was a huge motivation for us in reopening,” he said.

The camp was down about 50% of its staff, according to Snedeker, but they stepped up and worked “extremely hard to rally and raise money to keep us running.

We’re very proud of the staff that remained on and all of the others who helped out.”

When they were allowed, he said, the focus was on offering more family getaways, initially. Then, as things unfolded last summer, they were able to also host one week each of junior high and teen camp.
