Millions of people enjoy camping every year. Data from the KOA 2021 North American Camping Report indicates there were more than 94.5 million camper households throughout North America in 2020. As the world confronted the COVID-19 pandemic, North American campers took to camping in droves and intended to continue camping trips throughout 2021. While there are many different lessons novice campers must learn, one of the more important should include identifying what makes a good campsite. The choice of campsite is an important part of the camping experience. In fact, where a tent gets pitched can easily make or break a trip. A new study in the Journal of Environmental Management says the biggest factors price and the availability of electricity are significant priorities for campers looking for a campsite. However, many other factors should be considered when choosing a campsite.
Stay near water
Being close to water means not having to carry it far for cleaning, cooking and other needs. Try to stay roughly 200 feet away from a water source, as it’s important to remember that water also will attract animals.
Search for flat ground
It’s more comfortable and safer to pitch a tent on level ground. Make sure there are no rocks or other items under the tent that can compromise comfort. Avoid areas at the base of hills that can become

Check around for hazards
Before pitching a tent, check the area for dead branches on trees and make sure that nothing will crash down while you are asleep. Boulders may come loose and roll down hills, so areas vulnerable to falling rock also should be avoided. Make sure the campsite is not located by insect or animal nests.
Look for natural shade
A good campsite should keep campers from being exposed to too much sun between the hours of 12 p.m. and 3 pm. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can make it too hot and camping equipment may degrade from UV rays. String up a tarp or use a popup canopy if there’s no natural shade.
Find a measure of privacy Camping is about getting away from the hustle and bustle, which can be hard when you’re too close to other people. Look for a campsite that offers space to set up a tent and camping equipment without being right on top of other campers. However, if you like the camaraderie of being around other people, then by all means camp close to others.

Take a hard look at what you are seeking in a camper. Do you want something that is just an alternative to tent camping? Are you interested in an RV that can sleep a crowd? Do you have a tow hitch and a vehicle capable of towing an RV? These questions and more will determine the style and size of the RV that’s right for you. Class A RVs are large, bus-shaped rigs between 20 and 45 feet in length. Class B are sleeper vans and are smaller than Class A. Class C rigs offer size but driveability and are built into a regular truck chassis. For trailerstyle RVs, the options are foldable trailers, travel trailers, toy haulers, and fifth wheel trailers. They vary in

Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. At Kunes RV in Elkhorn, according to Recreational Vehicle Director Tom Hamil, the dealership has seen similar trends. Hamid said Kunes RV has seen sales increase year over year by about 35%. Hamil, however, noted the recent gas prices could cause a slight disruption within the industry, but believes consumers will come back. “There might be a small downward trend in the next few weeks with the gas prices being as high as they are,” he said. “However, we haven’t seen that. People are still liking the idea of spending time with their family on RVs.” Additionally, Hamil said most families have already planned to have outings and activities with their RVs this summer, with the RV as the focal point. Supply issues subside RV manufacturers, like other industries, experienced supply chain issues last year because of increased demand as well as shortages in supplies. However, according to Hamil, the RV industry has experienced a rebound for 2022 and customers should expect plenty of inventory. “Most of our manufacturers have caught up on parts and supply issues. The
supplies are great and we are getting more inventory than we ever had,” he said. “The manufacturers communicated very well last year on what the shortages were and when they were going to be short.” Additionally, Hamil said Kunes RV took a proactive approach, ordering more inventory this year, ensuring the dealership has enough.
“The inventory is the best it has ever been. The prices right now will be the lowest,” he said. “If you are interested, now is the time to buy.”

RVs allow people to visit even the most remote locations without having to worry about finding food or lodging. As welcoming as the interior of an RV can be, it’s also easy for first-time RV drivers to feel a little intimidated. RVs are the largest vehicles many people will ever operate, and even long-time drivers will likely need some time to adjust. That adjustment period can go smoothly if drivers take steps to grow more comfortable behind the wheel before embarking on their trips.

Spice bottles are portable and don’t take up much space. Salt and pepper are musthaves, but it’s easy for campers to tote along additional favorite spices to make mealtime that much more palatable. closed-cell pads for backpackers, as these are lightweight options that won’t make backpacking more difficult. Self-inflating pads work better for car camping, as these are heavier but also thicker and wider than the alternatives, providing more comfort and support. Camp Kettlewood expands its camping options
Knoll Girl Scout Camp at W3524 Highway 20, East Troy, in June 2019 and spent a year fixing up the campgrounds and renovating the lodge. Simona said she and her husband decided to move out to the country from Milwaukee because they wanted more space and when they started looking at properties to buy, she heard about the Girl Scout camp from a co-worker. With her husband being “such an outdoorsman” Simona thought it would be a good fit. So, the couple decided to take the plunge.
Fixing it up
One of the big issues for the Ebners was they needed to bring everything up to modern code to open. She said that while her husband is a big fan of rustic camping, she is more of a “glamping” type of girl. So, they met in the middle and decided to offer both types of camping. Part of the experience is the antique feel to the campgrounds, which took some doing, Simona said. “We are still focused on keeping that antique look and preserving the history and especially the Girl Scout history,” she said. Camp Kettlewood sits on 80 acres of old-growth forest, shaded nature trails and protected wetlands, according to the website. There is no swimming, however.
