Humble Oak Outdoor Learning Center will host Walk in the Woods, a fundraiser 5K/3.5K Walk from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 in The Woods, W2743 Friemoth Road, East Troy. Registration is $40 per participant. The event is a way for Humble Oak to raise funds for fall educational programming for the children of Walworth County and surrounding communities. “Humble Oak’s mission is to provide a space where individuals of all ages may become more connected to the natural world while deepening their understanding and knowledge of themselves and others,” organizers said. This event will feature a 5K Run/Family Walk through the forest, and a chance for the community to come together and learn about Humble Oak.

About Humble Oak:
Humble Oak is a startup nonprofit outdoor learning center that will provide nature-based programming aiming to connect individuals of all ages more deeply to themselves, the land and the greater community. The center is the next step for Violet Glen, which has been a cherished children’s outdoor learning program in East Troy for the past four years. Looking to expand the programming it could offer, the founder of Violet Glen, Erin Houlihan, reached out to other talented and visionary people who share its values. “Something magical came together within our team, and we realized that in order to provide programming to a larger community of people, we needed a new vehicle, but one that could also carry the original torch and spirit of Violet Glen into the future,” Houlihan said. “After much time invested in planning and hard work, we are happy to introduce Humble Oak. The East Troy Railroad Museum operates 14-mile round trip train rides from its historic East Troy depot and museum to Indianhead Park in Mukwonago, with a stop at the popular Elegant Farmer store and deli. The railroad is celebrating 50 years of riding the rails through Southeast Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine countryside. The not-forprofit museum is operated, maintained and managed by over 130 volunteers dedicated to engaging visitors in the heritage of electric interurban railways and trolley systems through restoration, preservation and operation of historic Equipment.

RACE IS ON • CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE happens to have cycling throughout the day,” said Vanessa Lenz, Executive Director of the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the event. “East Troy is day 2 on the 11-day race series and our schedule represents everything our local community has to offer.” Spectators may watch the cyclists whiz by once every three minutes from anywhere on the racecourse, which will feature plenty of food, drink and entertainment. Admission is free. “We are planning to add to the action with activities, food vendors, an ESPN radio broadcast, cabana parties and more. Many surrounding businesses will get in on the action with race day specials and bike themed items,” Lenz said. The cycling classic will include two races that allow locals to get in on the action. East Troy’s 6th annual Slow Ride Bike Race will feature riders competing to be the slowest without stopping. Last place comes in first. The winner gets $100 and there will also be a prize for best costume. “The Tour de Square Kids Fun Races have been a favorite with nearly 200 children competing like the pros as they pedal their bikes fast and furiously toward the finish line,” Lenz said.

East Troy is only one of three hosts on the ToAD 2022 series to host handcycling- a form of adaptive cycling that enables athletes of all abilities to ride a “bike” exclusively using the upper body. “It’s been praised for providing a newfound resilience and autonomy for these cyclists,” Lenz said.
New route East Troy will see a brand-new route this year with the East Troy race start and finish on the west side of the square (in between East Troy House and East Troy Brewery) and course heading west on Main, north on Beulah and east on Union Street back to the square. About 500 cyclists from around the country and abroad will ride laps around the half-mile course between 11:10 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. for timed races that range from 40 to 90 minutes. The race will shut down streets on the course, but local businesses will remain open. Parking will be available in the Chester Byrnes lot, 2031 Division St., and a golf cart shuttle will be available. The title sponsor for the East Troy Cycling Classic is the Dennis and Janice Klumb Family Foundation, which put up half of the bid fees to host the race. The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce serves as the local host, with funding for the balance of the fees donated by other local and regional sponsors. ToAD 2022, which marks its “Lucky 13th” year, runs Thursday, June 16 through Sunday, June 26 and features criterium-style races daily in different Wisconsin communities. ToAD has become one of the most popular bike race series in the sport earning an outstanding reputation for delivering a world-

If you’re a nature lover, East Troy will capture your heart with its striking waterfronts and flourishing green space. Ten local lakes and three state natural areas are all located within two miles of downtown. Here are our top recommendations.
SPECTACULAR SUMMER HIKES PICKEREL LAKE FEN PRESERVE Pickeral Lake Fen Preserve, which includes a portion of Pickerel Lake Fen, a rare wetland type, contains several springs that feed Pickerel Lake and an oak woodland, located at N8740 Pickerel Lake Road. The State Natural Area, managed by the Nature Conservancy, features a trail that is accessible to people who use power-driven mobility devices to help them get around. LULU LAKE The focal point of the diverse wetland and upland communities located on County Road J is the 95-acre Lulu Lake, a 40-foot deep, hard water drainage kettle lake fed
by the Mukwonago River and situated at the base of glacial deposits. Best seen by canoe via the Mukwonago River or through the channel from Eagle Spring Lake. KETTLE MORAINE STATE FOREST-MUKWONAGO RIVER UNIT The 970-acre former Rainbow Springs property is situated in the Mukwonago River watershed and is an area known for its outstanding resource waters, including the 35-acre Rainbow Springs Lake, varied habitats and biological diversity. Visitors can park in lots on Highway LO, County Road J (near Stringers Bridge Road) or County Road E. KETTLE MORAINE STATE FOREST-SOUTHERN UNIT Covering more than 22,000 acres of forested glacial hills, kettle lakes and prairies, the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is interlaced with more than 100 miles of mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking and nature trails. Forest Headquarters is 3 miles west of the Village of Eagle, S91 W39092 Highway 59. BEULAH BOG Located on Stringers Bridge Road, visitors can travel along Beulah Bog’s hiking trail east to catch sight of its shallow bog lake, floating mud flats, tamarack forest and wet open moat.
BEULAH BLUFF PRESERVE Beulah Bluff Preserve, a Kettle Moraine Land Trust nature preserve, is located at N9026 Bakavi Way, East Troy. The preserve overlooks the northwest shoreline of Lake Beulah and is open to the public for passive recreation and environmental education.
BEST MOUNTAIN BIKING JOHN MUIR TRAILS The John Muir Trails, known for its high-quality singletrack mountain bike trail system, are among the most popular in the state. Part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Southern Unit, the trail system, about two miles north of La Grange, N9097 County Road H, features five loops ranging from 1.25 to 12 miles. ALPINE VALLEY RESORT The Mountain Bike Trail at Alpine Valley Resort, W2501 County Road D, features 8.1 miles of single track with a 1,043 feet ascent and 1,035 descent. From the start, the trail is an ascending, leg-burning climb in the trees up the side of the ski hill. After you go around the excavation pit, miles of twists, turns, punchy climbs, and fast descents await. Enter via Alpine’s driveway toward the resort. Live music will make its return to East Troy this summer after many shows were canceled and scaled back in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and downtown construction. The return of these staples of live music range from megastars to local favorites in a season that promises to be bigger than ever.
LD’s BBQ brings life to Tuesdays with Bike Night LD’s BBQ, 2511 Main St., will host Bike Night from 6 to 9 pm. every Tuesday from June 7-Aug 30. Each event will feature music, great food and great friends.
Alpine Valley Music Theatre hosting busiest season in years Alpine Valley Music Theatre, one of the largest outdoor amphitheaters in the country, has announced its busiest summer of concerts in two decades. After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, Live Nation will bring the venue back to life. Alpine regulars Dave Matthews Band will return to Alpine Valley Music Theatre for a pair of shows July 2 and 3. The reunited Rage Against the Machine is now starting their 2022 tour on July 9 in East Troy, with support from Run the Jewels. The Knotfest Roadshow tour, headlined by Slipknot, will be stopping in East Troy, Wisconsin for a show June 4. The amphitheater’s lineup also includes Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band on July 23 and jam band greats Phish, Aug. 1214. Electronic artist Griz will headline Alpine’s first EDM Triple Rainbow festival, a two-day outdoor camping event, Sept. 16 and 17. Tickets for Alpine shows can be purchased at livenation.com.
Thursday Nights on the Square return The East Troy Community Band will present free concerts at East Troy Village Square Park on Thursday nights in the summer, mid-June through the end of July. Army Lake: The Army Lake public access point is located at W1698 St. Peter’s Road, featuring 989 feet of shoreline frontage. The 78-acre lake with a 17-foot maximum depth and an average of 8 feet, features fish like Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. Lake Beulah: At 812 acres, the largest lake in East Troy is a favorite for boating and fishing. It has a maximum depth of 58 feet. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. The public boat access site is located on Wilmer’s Landing in the Town of East Troy.
