It was largest, most grand boat on Geneva Lake – until it sank in 1891

On April 24, 1875, an impressive new side-wheel steam paddleboat appeared on Geneva Lake. It was the largest boat on the lake with a length of 115 feet, which bested the Lady of the Lake (98 feet). That designation was important to Oscar Newberry. The new boat, according to local lore, was built in revenge because of Newberry’s alleged slight from Lady of the Lake Captain Quigley, who was said to have been a friend of the family. The story is that Newberry, son of Lucius, was fishing on Geneva Lake in a small boat when a storm came up. He signaled to the nearby Lady of the Lake for help. But for some reason, Quigley declined to help. Perhaps he didn’t see Oscar’s signal, but Newberry vowed he would build a larger and more luxurious boat than the Lady of the Lake, and so he did.
Spared no expense
Local and well-respected boat builder John W. French constructed the Lucius Newberry in Lake Geneva. Newberry spared no expense and indeed proceeded to have the most luxurious boat on the lake. It was capable of holding 700. The hull was designed using 3-inch thick oak planking, which was nailed to heavy, steam-bent oak frames. The paddle wheels were said to be 21 feet in diameter with 4-foot wide buckets. Early reports described the wheelhouses “as being beautifully ornamented and representing a rising sun and a starry heaven. The boat was powered by a two-

cylinder, 125-horsepower Torrant steam engine.” The ladies cabin was designed with utmost elegance. Heart-shaped, it measured 39 by about 17 feet. Brussels carpets and richly upholstered furniture
filled the room. The woodwork was appliquéd with Hungarian veneer and with heavy-gilded molding along the top and edges. The interior of the cabin could have been an art gallery; there were more than 40 oil works by popular painter and photographer John Bullock. Bullock painted a lot of nature scenes around the lake. He reportedly received $1,500 for his artwork. The aft portion of the room featured a restroom and a dress circle with finely made plate glass mirrors that included ground edges and the vessel’s name etched in. Located on the side near the wheelhouses was a convenient wash closet for male passengers, albeit with much less elegant accommodations. The three-level ship contained an ornately carved bar and a piano. Exquisite kerosene chandeliers were hung to add to the beauty and produce proper lighting. The circular office and salon were located in the forward section and measured 9 feet in diameter.
Deck and dance floor
Wide stairs led from the first floor to the promenade deck and dance floor. They traveled halfway up before splitting so that passengers could choose which side of the ship they wished to enter. The dance floor featured quality Georgia pine and measured 41 by 21 feet with a railing and seats surrounding it. There was ample space for an orchestra at the forward end. Music from the ship could be heard on the lake and ashore during its cruises. The boat also had a bell that was said to have come from a Mexican cathedral after the Spanish-American War. The boat was built at a cost of about $16,000. The Lucius Newberry usually made three trips daily from Lake Geneva to Fontana. A round-trip ticket cost 50 cents.
Owner becomes captain
Upon its completion, Oscar Newberry was named captain, carrying passengers, mail and cargo across the lake. He remained captain until 1879, when John Wilson of the Anchor Line Company purchased the Newberry and one or two of the smaller boats from the Newberry Steam Line. According to one report, Wilson also purchased Lady of the Lake from Edward Quigley. The Lucius Newberry underwent major repairs – rotting wood on the hull was replaced, the engines were overhauled and hogging trusses (large steel frames with steel rods attached to the bow and stern to make the hull stiffer) were added. However, these were not the only changes Wilson made. A member of the Temperance movement, he also changed several policies. In what he claimed was a means to make the ladies more comfortable, he forbade liquor, cigars or confections to be used or sold onboard. He also created uniforms to make the crew look more professional and hired a band for each cruise. In 1890, the boat was again sold, this time to C.A. Noyes, who only kept it for three months before transferring it to Wesley Johnson. Johnson’s first act was to change the name to the City of Lake Geneva. He also renamed the company The Lake Geneva Steamer Line.
A fiery end
His ownership also didn’t last long. A night watchman noticed a fire in the stern while the boat was docked on Dec.

Bill Ehrhardt, one of the original divers who uncovered the site of the Lucius Newberry, shares the story of the finding of the boat and the difficulties of bringing up the artifacts
9, 1891. The cause of the fire was never discovered. The watchman untied the boat and let it float into the water until it sank, saving the dock from also burning. The Lucius Newberry/City of Lake Geneva would remain in Geneva Lake — 60 feet down — until July 1, 1981, when four local divers located it. One of them, Bill Ehrhardt, was credited with salvaging many of the boat’s artifacts. “Contrary to popular belief, the location of the boat was not unknown,” Ehrhardt said. “No one went to look for it.” Not until friends approached Ehrhardt, who owned a diving shop in the area. “They came to me because I had the boat,” Ehrhardt added. The Newberry was said to have drifted out and followed its normal excursion route until it sank. It was speculated that its location was in a direct line in front of

The Riviera and in front of the Allerton Landing. “Both were correct,” Ehrhardt said. “We were actually heading out to look for a sailboat that had sunk about two years before. I had them turn on the graphing machine and print out what they found.” After passing over the area several times they were sure something was there and decided to pursue it. “It was not the best time to dive because visibility was poor down to 10-12 feet.” The divers thought they could see big, round hub from the side wheel of the paddlewheel and the anchor. Ehrhardt, Ron Steickel and Mark Terry returned to shore to join friend and fellow diver Herb Budd.

up that day. That 418-pound anchor is displayed in front of the Geneva Lake Museum, 355 Mill St. One of the problems when finding an important dive site is protecting it from poachers. If left unmanned the divers give up rights to the site. So in addition to planting their flag they kept careful watch over the site. “When we were diving on the Newberry site, weekend flotillas from Fontana would hang around to try and poach the site. We would dredge around the site, especially on weekends, to stir up the bottom to prevent poachers from infiltrating the dive site.” Ehrhardt said there is always a question of who owns the articles recovered. “If there is no known direct owner, the artifacts belong to whoever pays for the recovery. After we had spent a lot of money on the dive, we tried to find
someone to underwrite it. We contacted the city, but they did not have any interest in supporting the dig. We contacted Gary Gygax, who created the board game ‘Dungeons and Dragons.’ His company (TSR Hobbies) donated $10,000 to continue the dive.” Buckets of artifacts, including brass plumbing fixtures, were brought up. When it came time to bring up some of the larger pieces, additional help was required. Four trailer loads of artifacts and about 50 buckets of additional pieces were recovered. The largest artifacts were the boiler, engine and the paddlewheel. A crew took these to a storage facility in Maryland from the Smithsonian Institute, which is where they were examined to better understand the workings of these early engines. They are displayed at the Smithsonian or lent to other museums.

Sojourn to the past this summer at Black Point Black Point Estate and Gardens, the 1888 20-room Queen Anne Style summer cottage of Chicago beer baron, Conrad Seipp, officially opened for the season in early May. “This will be the estates’ 131st summer season,” said David Desimone, director of Black Point Estate and Gardens for the Wisconsin Historical Society. “We have a lot of new, fun and interactive programming this season for guests and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to the estate.” New this year, will be two firstperson presentations, “An Evening with Agatha Christie,” July 29 and October 26 and a dinner with “Conrad Seipp” on July 27. Agatha Christie will be brought to life by local historian and actress Chris Brookes. This intimate evening will begin with a tour of the first floor followed by a conversation with Agatha Christie in the parlor. On July 27, guests will enjoy an intimate catered dinner in the Black Point dining room. Following dinner, attendees will relish in a conversation with Conrad Seipp, 19th-century Chicago beer baron and the original owner of the estate. This is a very rare opportunity to experience the estate. Conrad Seipp will be brought to life by Randy Witt, local historian and member of the Black Point staff. Black Point Estate and Gardens is also offering yoga during the summer solstice and autumn equinox this year. These are private events and a
fundraiser for Black Point. Guests will need to register. These events allow guests to stretch out on the estates’ front lawn or on the veranda as they enjoy the changing seasons. Offering a variety of programs throughout the season other highlighted events include, Nooks and Crannies Tour, Beer Barons of Lake Geneva, Plein Air Art Invitational, East Troy Electric Railroad Beer Train and When Angels Carried Them Away. To tour Black Point Estate and Gardens visitors travel by boat from the Riviera Docks in downtown Lake Geneva. Tickets can be booked through Lake Geneva Cruise Line. The entire tour takes about 3-1/2 hours. The cost is $39 for adults age 18 to 64, $37 for senior age 65 and older, and $27 for kids age 5 to 17. Children age 4 and younger ride for free. Wisconsin Historical Society members receive a $13 discount (except for special events). Mention the membership at the time of purchase. Walking tours are also offered by the site throughout the year and these take place on in Lake Geneva and not at the estate. The $10 tours run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 and 22, July 13 and 27, Aug. 10 and 24, and Sept. 14. The 90-minute guided tour will gather and depart from the Riviera Building, 812 Wrigley Drive, in downtown Lake Geneva, and cover roughly 1.5 miles. The Wisconsin Historical Society will be offering walking tours of downtown Lake Geneva and the historic Maple Park neighborhood again this year. The tour was developed by the staff of the society’s Black Point Estate and in conjunction with the Lake Geneva Preservation Commission and the Geneva Lake Museum. Enacted after the destruction of numerous buildings and sites in the years following World War II, the National Historic Preservation Act encourages Americans to identify and preserve our nation’s cultural and historic resources. Originally signed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966, the act states that “the historical and cultural foundations of the nation should be preserved as a living part of our community life and development in order to give a sense of orientation to the American people.” Through the Legends and Landmarks walking tour the staff at Black Point Estate hopes to raise awareness for Lake Geneva’s rich and diverse built environment. “The tour will focus on not only the architecture but many of the colorful personalities and events that make Lake Geneva a special place” Black Point Estate Director Dave Desimone said. “For a town of this size, the diversity and quality of architecture is truly impressive. This tour will help to highlight some of it.” Tour attendees will learn which buildings were designed by famous architects, which have a colorful past and which significant structures were lost to neglect or the wrecking ball.
