Pontoon boats are a hot-ticket item and area boat dealers are seeing an increase in sales. Not just for lazy trips around the lake, today’s pontoon boats offer comfort and style while providing enough power for recreation sports such as tubing.
Pontoon sales lead marine industry back GAGE MARINE THRIVES THANKS TO A DIVERSE ARRAY OF SERVICES By Ryan Spoehr STAFF WRITER
At one time considered a little more than a floating patio, pontoon boats have become a hot item in the marine industry. Prized for their versatility, these boats are used for more than sunset cocktail cruises these days. Many seek them for a full range of recreation uses, including fishing, skiing and tubing. “Pontoons have become extremely popular. They’ve upgraded in recent years,” said Courtney Blackwell, the sales coordinator at Gage Marine. “More recently, we have sold more but we’ve always sold a lot.” Just like many businesses, Gage Marine had to tread through the Great Recession. However, just like many other marine businesses, Gage Marine has seen a rebound. And pontoon boats are leading the rebound. Blackwell has worked with the company for four years, and she has seen the success firsthand. “Sales have gone up dramatically. Every year it has been better and better,” Blackwell said. Gage Marine sees only the same for the foreseeable future. “I think every year we have
continued to grow the amount of sales. I think people are not getting out of boating. When things went down, boating wasn’t as much of a priority, but that has certainly been changing,” Blackwell said. “Many customers have multiple boats, according to what their families need.” That bodes well for Gage, which has a long history in the area. The business dates to 1873 when it was started in Lake Geneva with the launch of the original Lady of the Lake excursion boat, according to the Gage Marine website. “Prior to the road system making its way around the lake, our excursion boats were the best way for visitors and lakefront homeowners to get to various resorts and homes,” the website says. In 1958, the Gage family bought the business. Shortly after, the family started building the Gage-Hacker, a wooden runabout that was produced from 1961 to 1969. The boat is still prized as a classic. Now, Gage Marine has grown into a diverse center for entertainment, recreation and other services. There is a wood
shop, there are boat sales, there is a restaurant and a marina. There’s a cruise line and even a summer camp. “We offer so many things. There’s a service pier and boating. We have camps for the kids. We have a little bit of everything,” Blackwell said. “We don’t specialize in one thing. It’s something that people appreciate. It’s a one-stop shop for everything.” Gage Marine sells products from companies such as MasterCraft, Regal Valanti and Bennington. Gage Marine provides its services for many throughout the Southern Lakes region, particularly Delavan, Como, Lake Geneva and Williams Bay and other Geneva Lake communities. “We have a lot of Illinois-based customers who live up here in the summer,” Blackwell said. A trend, Blackwell said, that representatives at Gage Marine have seen is a recent surge in interest in pontoon boats. Gage Marine is based at 1 Liechty Drive, Williams Bay. When the recession struck in 2008, recreational spending took a nosedive and it’s been a long, slow recovery for dealers of “luxury” items such as boats and personal watercraft. But, things are turning around in the industry. “We’ve seen a nice rebound in the last 18 to 24 months,” Wisconsin Marine Association Chairperson Michelle Shrider said. “We’ve seen more of an upturn in brokerage sales, dealers are still struggling a bit, but the brokerage sales are up.” Dealers sell new boats from manufacturers and brokers deal in the used-boat market, Shrider said. “The used-boat market is coming back strong, we’re probably close to what we were seeing before 2008,” she said. Shrider said the association had a board meeting recently and most of the board of directors, who are marina owners, reported their marinas were nearly full already this season. “It’s a good sign,” she said. “People are putting their boats in the water and we’re amping up the industry in the state, I know my own marina is about 98 percent occupied.” Shrider said that while spring had been a bit on the cool side – and more “wintery” than usual, most of the marinas she knew of throughout the state were launching boats or would be ready to launch in the next few days. “I think everybody is hoping for, and anticipating a strong

season with an early start,” she said. “I think the turn in the economy and the uptick in stock market is loosening up the disposal cash, which is crucial to our business. We’re hoping to see more sales in accessories and keep the repair business strong as the weather warms up.” According to a press release from the National Marine Manufacturers Association it expects unit sales of new powerboats to have increased between six and seven percent in 2016, reaching an estimated 250,000 boats sold as consumer confidence soared and manufacturers introduced products attracting younger boaters. In addition to increases in unit sales of new boats, recreational boating industry dollar sales are expected to rise between 10 to 11 percent from $8.4 billion in 2016. Wisconsin was one of the top 10 leaders in the nation in sales of new powerboat, engine, trailer and accessories in 2015, up 10 percent over 2014 with $617 million in sales. The 2016 national new powerboat sales numbers will be released in May, but new powerboat registrations are already up 6.1 percent nationwide over last year in February. According to NMMA’s 2016 U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract – Pre-Owned Boat Market 2015-2016, sales of pre-owned boats in the United States were up for the second consecutive year in 2016, increasing 2.5 percent in units and 2 percent in dollar value. Sales of pre-owned inboard ski/wakeboard boats led the growth, up 6.8 percent in units, representing 2.1 percent of total unit sales. The full report is available on NMMA.org.
