HOW TO HONOR first This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders.

The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is evoking responses that span the emotional spectrum. Sadness may dominate such responses, but the anniversary of 9/11 also is a great time to reflect on the efforts of first responders.

First responders played a vital role on 9/11, and many lost their lives and/or suffered long-term health consequences resulting from their selfless efforts to save innocent victims of the attacks.

In the two decades since the 9/11 attacks, first responders have continued to make countless sacrifices to ensure their communities are safe and peaceful places to call home. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is a great time to recognize the efforts of first responders and honor them for all they do.

Donate to local fire departments According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 54 percent of active firefighting personnel are volunteers. Many of those volunteer firefighters work for underfunded departments that are in need of financial support. Donating to such departments is a great way to show first responders how much their efforts are appreciated.

Donations may be used to purchase new equipment, upgrade existing facilities, provide vital training, and/or improve response times, the latter of which can increase the likelihood that firefighters make it through calls safe and sound.

Back legislation to support wounded first responders Many first responders suffer significant mental and physical injuries while on the job. Various nonprofit organizations help wounded first responders who may need to make modifications to their homes or purchase costly equipment to get through their daily lives. But nonprofit organizations cannot go it alone in support of wounded first responders.

Citizens can do their part by promoting and voting for local, state and national legislation that makes it easy for wounded first responders to get the help they need, when they need it. In addition to urging local politicians to support such legislation,

Pet safety and fire prevention tips

Pets nationwide are considered beloved members of the family. In fact, pet ownership throughout the U.S. has skyrocketed, with approximately 12.6 million Americans opening their home to a new pet since March 2020, according to a study by the American Pet Products Association.

IMPROVE THEIR SAFETY WHEN HOME ALONE

To help ensure your pet is safe even while you’re not home, use a pet gate to keep your animals in the main living area for easy rescue in the case of an emergency. Place pet alert stickers on windows near each entrance to inform firefighters of the presence of pets in your house.

When planning your emergency escape route, don’t forget to include your pets. Know which family members will be responsible for each pet and note their hiding spots for a faster evacuation.

Have leashes and collars stored near the main entrance of your home and, if possible, near other potential exits during an emergency, so you can grab them on your way out the door. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year, including crating your pets, to help make it an easier experience.

And, remind your family to never delay escape or go back inside to rescue your pet.

Burn Camp helps heal from the inside out

“Burn Camp has changed my life.”

From campers and their families to counselors and volunteers, sponsors and supporters, this is the phrase that is conveyed by all.

Everybody at Burn Camp has a different story, but one thing unites this special group of summer campers … they are survivors.

At the 27th annual Burn Camp this year, the motto was “Don’t just survive … thrive!”

The Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation has an annual, weeklong camp that is unlike any other. Camp Timber-lee in East Troy was host to more than 40 campers (including six virtual campers) from Aug. 8 to 14.

The campers ranged from 7 to 20 years old.

According to Michale Wos, executive director of the foundation, attendance was down this year because of COVID-19.

A lot of the traditional big activities were also canceled, including the fire truck parade and visitors day. Instead, a supporters’ appreciation dinner, camp tours and an inspiring and moving program was held Aug. 11.

While at the overnight camp, the children participated in swimming, fishing, archery, arts and crafts and horseback riding. The life-changing program promotes healing, peer support and living beyond the life-altering injuries these children and young adults have endured.

With donations and events held in honor of these survivors, this remarkable experience is available at no cost to the campers. Survivors of these traumatic experiences not only wear the scars from their burns on the outside, but carry the emotional scars on the inside as well.

The camp takes shy and timid campers and turns them into confident, proud young people ready to take on the world.

Burn Camp was created to recognize the unique needs of those who have endured significant burns. The physical pain of endless treatments and the visible scars are just part of the struggles these youth face, but it’s the issues of self worth and

As a child/teenager, it’s difficult to be different. At camp the kids can focus on what makes them who they are, not the “packaging” the world sees. The feeling of being all alone and different fades away as friendships and bonds are created. A sense of self-love and pride is instilled in its place.

With this invaluable experience, the campers share their emotions and stories in a safe, nurturing and fun environment.

The support network and self-confidence gained gives them the ability to cope better with the challenges outside of camp.

“I felt like I belonged. We are all loved for who we are,” said Latoya Eskridge, a camper who became a counselor.

Eskridge, 30, attended one of the first camps when she was 7 years old.

Eskridge was the only survivor of a

Milwaukee house fire in 1991 – she was 3 years old at the time.

Eskridge’s sister and cousin lost their lives in that fire and she spent six months in a hospital to treat second- and thirddegree burns over her entire body. She lost the fingers on her right hand and went through grueling physical therapy for many years.

After attending Burn Camp as a child, she knew she was meant to go out and help others to live a full life in spite of their significant scars.

“I love being a counselor here,” Eskridge said. “I want these young kids to know that even though they have scars on the outside, they are still the same wonderful people on the inside. They can let their guards down here and be comfortable and proud of who they are.”

The sense of community and belonging is a significant component of Burn Camp.

Their stories and scars are as different as

they are. What they find is a new way to look beyond that and love themselves in spite of their circumstances.

Wos said he is always thrilled and thankful for all the support and volunteers that come together to make this camp possible. Volunteers include firefighters, teachers, nurses, medical professionals and burn survivors.

“It’s a time for these kids to be kids!

They don’t have to feel singled out or worry about their physical appearances,” Wos said.

Many of the camp counselors are past campers who felt the significance and positive results of being on the other side of the program. In sharing their experiences, it is their hope that they can also make a difference as profound as the one they encountered. This year, 38 counselors were on hand to guide and encourage the campers with their experiences and compassion.

According to Wos, it is the goal of all who work together to make this camp possible that the newfound attitude and feeling of self worth can be extended to life outside of camp. It is the hope of all burn survivors that the world will see past the scars and accept them for the beautiful people they are and all they will become.

The dos and don’ts of fire pits Many homeowners relish any opportunity to retreat to their back yards, where they can put up their feet and relax in the great outdoors. That retreat-like escape is made even more relaxing when sitting around a fire pit.

Fire pits can be found in millions of suburban backyards across the globe. Fire pits have become so popular that a 2016 survey of landscape architects conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects revealed they were the most sought after outdoor design element.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms need to be maintained to protect your family. Regularly test the alarms, replace the batteries when needed and replace the alarms every 10 years.

Smoke alarms don’t last forever When is the last time you replaced your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms? Smoke and CO alarms are critical elements of home safety. Yet, many people overlook replacing their batteries or even the alarms themselves.

Fire safety experts have linked the incidence of fatal fires to the absence of alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without properly working smoke alarms, or no alarms at all.

“If you can’t think of the last time you installed a smoke or CO alarm, chances are, it’s time to replace your old ones,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. “It’s important to make sure alarm maintenance and replacement become a regular, ongoing part of your family’s routine.”

First Alert, the most trusted brand in fire safety, offers the following tips to ensure your family and home are best protected in the event of a fire or CO incident:

EVERY LEVEL, EVERY BEDROOM It’s critical to have enough smoke and

CO alarms and ensure they are working properly. The NFPA recommends that smoke alarms be installed on every level of the home, including the basement, and in every bedroom. CO alarms should also be installed on every level and near each sleeping area.

To put this in perspective, the average-sized home in America - a twostory, three-bedroom house - needs a minimum of five smoke alarms and four CO alarms. “Every home’s layout and dimensions are different, so consider your specific needs when selecting products to make your home more fire safe,” added Wey.

TEST AND MAINTAIN Many people assume that because they have alarms in their homes, they’re automatically protected in the event of a fire or CO incident. In reality, both smoke and CO alarms need to be maintained and tested regularly to ensure that they’re working properly. Nonetheless, research shows that more than 60% of consumers do not test their devices on a monthly basis.

Testing the alarm is simple – hold

down the test button and wait for the alarm to sound. It’s also important to clean the alarm to remove any dust or debris that could interfere with proper function.

ALARMS DON’T LAST FOREVER If you don’t know how old an alarm is, the safest bet is to replace it. Check the date printed on the back of the device. If the alarm is more than 10 years old, it is time to replace it. It is necessary to replace all smoke alarms every 10 years and CO alarms every five to 10 years, depending on the model.

Batteries also don’t last forever and should be replaced every six months, unless the alarm features a 10-year sealed battery. As an extra safety measure, most alarms feature an end-of-life warning to alert residents when it is time for replacement.

What to do after your home is damaged by fire

The notion that their homes could be damaged if not destroyed by fire is something many homeowners find unimaginable. But fires damage homes every day across the globe, which only underscores the importance of knowing how to respond should your home be engulfed in flames.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, local fire departments responded to an estimated 1.3 million fires in the United States in 2019. Fires also pose a threat in Canada, where the insurance provider SGI Canada reports that there are roughly 24,000 house fires each year.

Installing and maintaining fire alarms can help prevent house fires from producing tragic consequences. A wellpracticed evacuation plan also can protect homeowners and their families in case of a fire, increasing the likelihood that anyone inside the home can promptly exit before suffering injury or even death. It’s also important that homeowners recognize what they need to do after their homes have been damaged by fire.

STAY SAFE Recognize that it’s still risky even after the fire is out. The U.S. Fire Administration notes that homes damaged by fire pose a threat even after flames have been extinguished. Soot and dirty water left behind may contain things that can make people sick.

Only enter a home after the local fire department has deemed it safe to do so. Before entering the home, don personal protective equipment like masks, goggles and gloves to avoid getting sick from any contaminants lingering in the home.

CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY The USFA notes that some companies specialize in cleaning and restoring personal items damaged by fires, and your insurance company can be a great resource when looking for such firms. Insurance companies also will advise homeowners on what they need to do in the
