Use the 5-step fire safety checklist When flames engulfed his 1940s beach bungalow without warning, actor Taylor Kinney was thankful to make it out alive.

That experience, paired with his role as one of America’s favorite TV firefighters, inspired him to advocate for fire safety and is why he’s partnering with First Alert this fall to share important messages about fire safety preparedness.

“In my role as a firefighter on TV, I help portray very serious and dangerous fire emergency situations,” Kinney said. “But one of the most dangerous of all is the lack of fire safety precautions among a majority of Americans, including having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to provide early warning in the event of a real home emergency.”

Recent research shows that more than 60% of consumers do not test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly.

That, along with other easy-to-perform tasks, can mean the difference between a safe home and a dangerous home.

This simple fire safety checklist can help ensure your home and family are protected from the threats of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide.

Install smoke alarms on every level 1. and in every bedroom. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or

with no working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

For maximum protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Testing and maintaining alarms is key.

Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years.

Help ensure your alarms remain in good, working order by changing the batteries at least every six months. Steps to keep your home safe from fires According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms – often due to missing alarm batteries or expired alarms.

Fortunately, a new generation of home safety technology – combined with triedand-true safety practices – can help keep homes and families safer from the threat of home fires. Burn Camp celebrates

25th anniversary

Every year, Camp Timber-lee in East Troy hosts a camp like no other summer camp. The remarkable program promotes healing, peer support and living beyond the life-altering injuries these children endure.

For 25 years now, hundreds of burn survivors and volunteers make this camp special and life changing for all involved at the annual Summer Camp for Burn Injured Youth.

Kids ages 7 to 17 with burn injuries are able to attend at no cost to them or their families. This year’s camp ran from Aug. 11 to 17.

Campers arrived the second Sunday in August from Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee and other areas. Many of these campers have attended before and move into a counselor role as they become old enough.

The camp is sponsored by the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation, the cost covered by donations and events held in honor of these courageous young people and their families.

It costs about $100,000 a year to put on camp. The PFFWCF is a continuation of the Wisconsin Alliance for Fire Safety, a public charity working to create a fire safe and burn free Wisconsin by promoting, encouraging, and fostering fire safety education.

This year’s theme for Burn Camp this year was “Show Your Inner Glow” and many of the activities during the week were

based on that theme. Camp kicked off Aug. 11 with a glow-in-the-dark celebration with a black light dance party. The camp provides many traditional “camp” activities like horseback riding, swimming, archery, and many other outdoor activities both on and offsite. Burn camp also offers free massages for those interested and therapy dogs are brought in for the week.

Many guest speakers, firefighters and medical personnel are there to connect with the kids and offer support and cheer leading.

Focusing on more than appearances

What makes this camp so special is the sense of community and the feeling of belonging. Their stories and scars are as different as they are, but what they all find is a new way to look beyond that and love themselves in spite of their circumstances.

As a child/teenager it’s difficult to be different, at Camp Timber-lee, the kids can focus on what makes them who they are, not the packaging the world sees. The sense of being all alone and different fades away as friendships and bonds are created and a sense of self-love and pride is instilled in its place.

Burn Camp was created to recognize the unique needs of those who have endured significant burns. The physical pain of endless treatments and visible scars are just part of the struggles these youth face. It’s the issues of self-worth and how they want the world to see them.

Children who attend camp can use this invaluable experience to share their emotions and stories in a safe, nurturing and fun environment. They create a network of support, and gain self-confidence and the ability to cope better with challenges of life outside of camp. Many people help to make this happen.

The Burn Camp staff is 100% volunteer and comprised of firefighters, teachers, nurses, medical professionals, burn survivors

and many others.

Michael Wos, executive director of the PFFWCF, is always thrilled and thankful with all the support and volunteers that always come back to make this camp happen.

“It’s a time for these kids to be kids!

They don’t have to feel singled out or worry about their physical appearance, Wos said, “The campers speak to and confide in other survivors. Hearing and seeing that they are not alone and that there are people and resources out there for them is the goal of this camp.”

Although the campers will rave about the fun and activities they’ve done, it’s not just about having a good time. Camp challenges these kids to work at accomplishing certain goals (climbing a rock wall, swimming, etc.) there is a focus on the kids doing things on their own and discovering their full potential.

Some campers have lost limbs and not all activities may be easy for all, but at Burn Camp, they are challenged, but not treated differently. They work hard to accomplish certain goals or activities and it is done in a safe and encouraging environment.

A personal connection

One out of three Burn Camp counselors/ staff is a burn survivor. Many of these incredible leaders have been former campers in their youth and want to give back. These adult burn survivors are an inspiration to the young campers.

LaToya Eskridge. a camp counselor, was the only survivor of a Milwaukee house fire in 1991. She was only 3 years old at the time.

Eskridge lost her sister and her cousin in the fire and she spent six months in the hospital to treat second and third degree burns over her entire body. She lost her fingers on her right hand and endured grueling physical therapy for many years.

At 7 years old, Eskridge was one of the original campers at Burn Camp. Even at this

young age, she said she knew God had a plan for her. She was destined to go out and help others to live a full and happy life in spite of their significant scars and circumstances.

“I love being a counselor here!” Eskridge said. “I want these young kids to know that just because they have scars on the outside, they are still the same wonderful people on the inside. They can let their guard down here, and feel comfortable about who they are.”

Guest speaker and burn survivor Sam Matagi spoke to the teens during the week.

Matagi lost both hands and forearms to an electrical fire/burn. He was a shining example of how to carry on after a tragedy like this hits. He has had to learn how to adapt and face the world being “different.”

“This camp gives these kids a chance to take back their own lives-to love themselves again,” Matagi said.

He can relate to the kids feeling that they look different and how they tend to hide away from society. At this critical age, they are fearful and embarrassed about what people will think of them if they look different.

“They think they are the only ones in the world who deal with this” Matagi continues.

“This week of camp allows them to be themselves and not to worry about what others are thinking. It’s a bond they create with other kids dealing with the same selfdoubt.”

Matagi stressed to the campers that what they look like on the outside does not change the person you are, or strive to be, on the inside.

Fifteen-year-old Tasha Willoughby, from Milwaukee, attended Burn Camp for the first time this year. She suffered severe burns to her body and limbs from a boiling-water accident.

“My favorite part of camp this week is everything!” she said. “It was so much fun and I met so many people that deal with

the same as me everyday. It has made me a stronger person.”

Aug. 15 was visitors day at Burn Camp.

Camp Timber-lee hosted media, visitors, and family for a day of celebration and fun.

Dozens of area fire trucks, ambulances, tankers and other emergency vehicles paraded under the giant flag into the campgrounds.

The shiny trucks carrying the heroes were preceded by about 40 motorcycles carrying former campers. With sirens blaring, and campers cheering, the parade of vehicles rallied the campers and their families.

Campers were then allowed to choose an

emergency vehicle to ride in for an extra parade lap around the grounds.

The action-packed day continued with a program and check presentation from supporters and a free cookout luncheon for all. The carnival and infamous slip ‘n slide full of bubbles capped off the day of activities. An optional caregiver support group was offered as well.

For all involved, the goal is to extend this positive attitude and self-worth to life outside of camp. It is also a hope that society will help in this endeavor by seeing beyond the superficial and seeing the people these kids are and will become.

Fire stations are aging faster than can be repaired As the condition of aging bridges, roadways, transportation resources and grids across the U.S. has increasingly become the focus of discussion, the National Fire Protection Association has issued Renovations Needs of the U.S. Fire Service, a new report on the fire service’s aging infrastructure.

Two key findings within the report show that more than 21,000 firehouses across the country are beyond 40 years of age with total replacement costs estimated to be in the $70 billion to $100 billion range.

The report draws on data found in the Fourth Needs Assessment for the U.S. Fire Service, a survey that compares what fire departments actually have with what existing standards, government regulations, and other guidance documents state as being required in order to be safe and effective.

Relevant case studies were also considered as part of the research project.

The objective was to determine just how old firehouses are today, and what it would cost to rebuild current, compliant structures that keep first responders safe from harm at their workplace. The report identifies the number of stations that are over 40-years old; are not equipped with exhaust emission control; are without backup power; do not have separate facilities for female firefighters; and need mold remediation.

Findings from the report include the following: • 21,230 of U.S. fire stations (43 percent) are more than 40 years old, representing an 11 percent increase in aging infrastructure over the past 15 years.

• The estimated cost to replace these stations is estimated at between $70 and $100 billion; costs depend on space needs, location, site condition, and department preferences.

• Sixty-one percent of fire stations that are more than 40 years old are serving communities with less than 9,999 people.

• A shortage of funding, tighter budgets, and a lack of grants are likely reasons for the large number of older stations.

• 29,120 fire stations (59 percent) in the U.S. are not equipped with exhaust emission control systems, which are critical for mitigating firefighter exposure to diesel fumes. These fumes can increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease, cardiopulmonary disease, respiratory disease, and lung cancer.

• Assistance to Firefighter Grants have helped reduce the number of firehouses without exhaust emission control systems from 66 to 59 percent.

• About 17,030 fire stations (35 percent) do not have access to backup power, which is critical for business continuity during an emergency event. When the power is out, firehouses without generators may run into issues with phones ringing, computers running, trucks being fueled, and garage bay doors opening. The cost to install backup generators runs between $850 million and $1.7 billion.

When fire stations were built 40-plus years ago, departments were exclusively male. Today, the most recent Needs Assessment estimates that 10 percent of career firefighters are female. The number

Accelerated speed of today’s home fires cause for concern Research shows occupants may have less than two minutes to escape Today’s home fires burn faster than ever, making escape planning all the more critical to home fire safety. Studies show that in the past, people had about 17 minutes to escape a typical home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Now they may have as little as two minutes to get out safely.

With these concerns in mind, the National Fire Protection Association has announced “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” as the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Oct. 6 to 12.

Working to better educate the public about the importance of home escape planning and practice, the theme recognizes the potentially heroic impact of everyday people who put these messages into action.

“Home escape planning and practice may seem so basic that it’s not even necessary, but in reality, these efforts can have tremendous impact,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “We’ve seen time and again that advance planning can make a potentially life-saving difference in a fire situation.”

NFPA statistics show that the number of reported U.S. home fires in 2018 is half that reported in 1980.

However, the death rate per 1,000 reported fires has remained fairly steady, reflecting the continued challenges of safely escaping today’s home fires.

While home is the place people are at greatest risk to fire – about 80% of all U.S. fire deaths occur in homes – people tend to underestimate their risk. That overconfidence lends itself to a complacency toward home escape planning and practice.

“Most people don’t recognize the true value of home escape planning until they’ve experienced a home fire, and by then it’s too late to start developing a plan,” Carli said. “The people who take the time to prepare in advance really are heroes – their actions can help make their families much safer from fire.”

A home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home. Home escape plans should be practiced twice a year by all members of the household.

Heating Safety There is something about the winter months and curling up with a good book by the fireplace. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening. be warm and safe this winter!

Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet (one metre) away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.

Have a three-foot (one metre) “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

Never use your oven to heat your home.

Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.

Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

Test smoke alarms at least once a month.
