With fall arriving, many people are looking for something new to do as outdoor activities become more limited with the colder weather. Interest in the arts and finding new outlets for creative expression ramped up recently in light of the pandemic and resulting lockdown and continued social distancing recommendations.

Those looking to expand their horizons in those areas might want to check out Creative Spaces and its new facility on Main Street in Waterford.

Daughter and mother team of Donna Fearing and Barbara Hayes opened Creative Spaces Studio, LLC, in Waterford in December 2018, in a small strip mall on Milwaukee Street. The crafting workshop offers classes and open crafting time in stained glass, fused glass, mosaic and quilting/sewing.

Hayes’ decades of sewing/quilting experience combined with Fearing’s glass works knowledge offers a workshop space for people who may not have the ability, or desire, to craft at home.

Creative Spaces Studio moved into the old NAPA building at 318 E. Main St. in downtown Waterford this summer. The new space, which is three times larger than the old studio, allows for more crafting and bigger projects.

Surviving the shut down Fearing said they couldn’t have considered such a big move if the community hadn’t been supportive during the lockdown and continuing to purchase items via their website and on Facebook.

“We were so lucky to be able to continue, even though we were closed,” Fearing said. “People really supported us. We sold face masks too and mom still did the long-arm quilting for individual customers.”

Creative Spaces re-opened in early June and restarted classes by the middle of the month and Fearing said their customers returned immediately.

The workshop continues to have classes and has open create hours during the week.

They will accept small groups and masks are required as per the state’s mask mandate and they encourage social distancing for people not in the same group/family.

“We’re keeping things small right now for safety,” Fearing said. “We’ll work with anyone to make sure everyone feels safe.”

Fearing added that with the severe emotional stress of the pandemic and civil unrest happening right now, she felt people need a creative outlet.

“We want people to know we’re a place people can come and relax, be comfy and create,” she said.

“We’re a great place to take a break from the world and make something beautiful.”

With the move to the new workshop, Fearing and Hayes have expanded their hours of operation and are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The business has attracted customers from all over the Southern Lakes area and has been building for the last year and a half. So much so that the owners knew last year at this time they would eventually need a larger space.

When the COVID-19 lockdown happened and they had to close Creative Spaces to the public, Fearing and Hayes began planning for their reopening.

“I called the company that’s managing the old NAPA building while everyone was shut down, because I heard it might be available,” Hayes said.

“I said, ‘I know this is a real weird question right now with no one open, but is the building going to available for rent?’”

The answer was yes and the duo began planning.

“We were really excited,” Fearing said.

The new space, at 318 E. Main St., Waterford, is three times the size of their previous space and has allowed the duo to spread out and have space for everything they want to do. In addition to having the space needed to upcycle furniture, which is something people have been asking for Fearing said, the new space has plenty of room for the longarm sewing machine Hayes uses to quilt customers’ quilt tops.

The pair said moved their crafting workshop into the old NAPA building on Waterford’s Main Street at the end of June and re-opened July 1.

If the community’s support of this business is any indication, the move will help Creative Spaces continue to grow and prosper.

The arts can benefit students in myriad ways. If local school districts no longer offer art programs, it’s up to parents to find ways to encourage their children’s love of art.

Simple ways to encourage young artists

No two students are the same. Some students may love to read and naturally gravitate toward English class, while others may be fascinated by the world around them and find nothing stokes their academic passions quite like the study of physics.

A passion for a given subject can make students more excited about school. But what about students with a passion for art? Many school districts have drastically cut back on fine arts classes. For example, a recent analysis of data from the State Department of Education in Oklahoma found that schools in the Sooner State cut more than 1,100 fine arts classes between 2014 and 2018.

In the face of such budget cuts, parents may need to take a more active role in support of their children’s passion for art. The following are some ways parents can encourage that passion.

RECOGNIZE THE EDUCATIONAL VALUE OF ART PBS notes that creative activities are some of the building blocks of child

development. While schools may be shifting their focus to common core subjects like mathematics, parents should recognize that art can be incredibly valuable to young minds as well.

For example, art can help young children develop language skills, as creating art projects, even while just a toddler, often compels children to talk about their art. In addition, a recent report from Americans for the Arts found that art education strengthens problemsolving and critical-thinking skills.

If parents recognize the value of art, students are more likely to follow suit and reap all the rewards that art education provides.

ALLOW CHILDREN THE FREEDOM TO CREATE While technique is important for artists, young artists can benefit from some space. Other subjects are necessarily structured, but art sessions can be a great time for kids to simply explore their creativity without much interference from parents or educators.

A designated room for arts, including

arts and crafts, can illustrate to children that their interest in the arts is important and worthy of exploration.

KEEP SUPPLIES WELLSTOCKED Much like parents of young athletes enroll them in sports leagues or purchase the latest equipment, parents of children with a passion for art can indulge that passion by enrolling them in local art classes and keeping them well-stocked with art supplies.

Even if the supplies are as simple as crayons and construction paper, their availability can send kids the message that their passion for art is not taken lightly.

For kids, biking is one of the gateways to growing up. Popular films and TV hits such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Stranger Things” highlight the joy a bike can bring as a fun way to explore or spend time kicking around the neighborhood.

Yet, according to a study from the Outdoor Industry Association, bike riding among kids declined 19% between 2007 and 2019.

There are plenty of good reasons for anyone to get outside and ride a bike.

Especially during this time of social distancing, bike riding offers the perfect opportunity to shake off cabin fever and safely enjoy the fresh air.

Benefits of bike riding For tweens and teens in particular, there are many benefits of owning and riding a bike, including: • It gets kids outside away from screens to enjoy fresh air and vitamin D-giving sunshine; • It promotes cardiovascular health;

• It builds muscles, while improving balance and coordination; • It improves mental health by helping to reduce anxiety or stress; • It is good for the environment, offering an emissions-free mode of transportation; and • It helps build self-confidence and relationships with others who like cycling too.

Help for foster kids who need bikes Unfortunately, not every kid has the opportunity to enjoy the many positive aspects of bike riding. Children in foster care, tweens and teens in particular, don’t always have access to a bike, so they aren’t able to experience this important milestone of growing up.

To help address this issue, Honeycomb cereal is donating $50,000 to Together We Rise, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping improve the lives of youth in

Fall is a great time to get some cycling in before Old Man Winter arrives. Kids should be encouraged to strap on their bike helmets and go for a ride.

White River State Trail A 12-mile crushed limestone trail, it follows a former railroad bed and connects the City of Elkhorn to Burlington, also passing through the historic villages of Lyons and Springfield in the process.

The western end of trail is at Highway H south of the Interstate 43 and US Highway 12 interchange in Elkhorn. The Burlington trailhead is on Spring Valley Road about a mile south of Highway 36.

Seven Waters Trail Another trail of this kind, the Seven Waters Trail, took several shorter trails and consolidated them under one name once they formed a continuous route. This trail runs from Riverside Park in Burlington up through Waterford, the Town of Norway, into Wind Lake and further on into Muskego.

Mountain bike Mecca Riders seeking mountain biking opportunities, also have an extensive system of trails available to them in our area of the state. The John Muir trail system connecting the John Muir trail with the Emma Carlin trail is one of the region’s top mountain biking destinations.

Cycling safety tips Kids heading out on their bikes should follow basic guidelines to protect their health and safety.

Remind your tween or teen to: • Always wear a helmet, even for a short trip.

• Be visible by wearing bright clothing and using reflectors or lights to ensure others can see you, especially in the early morning or around sundown.

• Always use sunscreen to protect exposed skin from UV rays; • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids; • Stick to bike paths, if possible, rather than riding on the street; • Obey all traffic laws; • Stay alert while riding; • Don’t use ear buds or headphones that could prevent you from hearing traffic or other dangers; and • Don’t use your phone or text while riding - stop and get off the trail to use any device.

Organize a bike ride with family and friends this fall. Cycling and social distancing go hand in hand and offers many health benefits.

How to hike safely in remote areas

Pack extra clothing Extra clothing is vital on a remote hiking excursion for a number of reasons.

Some extra socks, a wind- and rainresistant jacket and an extra pullover can help hikers stay warm and dry if the weather changes while they’re hiking and trying to return to their vehicles. In addition, extra clothing can help hikers

stay warm if they suffer an injury while hiking and need to camp overnight once the sun goes down.

Pack extra food Extra food and water is just as vital when hiking remote areas as extra clothing. Extra food can make emergency situations more manageable, helping people avoid hunger if they need to camp overnight or simply keep their energy up on long hikes.

Trail mix tends to be high in calories and full of protein, making it an ideal, easily packed food to bring along on a hiking trip.

Don’t go it alone Solo hiking can be a great way to connect with nature, but it’s always best to hike remote areas with at least one other person. Hiking in pairs ensures someone is there to seek help if a hiker is injured and rendered immobile while out on the trails.

Let others know your whereabouts If going on a solo hike or even with a partner, share your location and intended hiking route with a loved one who is not coming along for the hike. Let this person know when you intend to return and that you will call them when you safely make it back to your vehicle. If the call never comes, your loved one can then alert the appropriate authorities and share detailed information about where you are hiking.

Bring maps Pack a road map showing the way to the trail and a map of the park itself.

Remote areas may not have the best internet connections, rendering car GPS systems useless. And a printed map of the park can help hikers reduce their risk of getting lost once inside the park.

Pick up or order a map of the park in the days prior to your trip. Don’t wait until you arrive at the park to get a map, as the park may not have any on hand.

Many people have rediscovered the great outdoors in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Social distancing measures have greatly restricted indoor gatherings, but outdoor activities, particularly once parks were reopened, allowed people to get out of their homes while still keeping their distance from others.

Remote hiking trails provide perfect opportunities to experience the wonder of nature while social distancing, but it’s imperative that hikers take certain precautionary measures on such excursions in order to stay safe.

Although a popular attraction in the area, many still don’t know that the East Troy Railroad Museum runs the last remaining segment of the old Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light interurban rail system, offering trolley and interurban railroad car rides each weekend.

The rail line between East Troy and Mukwonago was once part of more than 200 miles of track in Southeastern Wisconsin. Today, the 14-mile of track used by the railroad operates every weekend Memorial Day weekend through September.

The East Troy Railroad Museum is a non-profit organization, which is run by more than 100 volunteers and features historical railway cars that have been lovingly restored.

“We are restoring North Shore Care 761 right now and there is a lot of energy and excitement about getting it operational,” museum President Ryan Jonas said. “It’s totally stripped now and ready to paint and it’s looks like we’ll have it done by the end of the year.”

Jonas said the former owner of the railroad, Paul Averdung, has been volunteering at the museum to be part of the project.

“He ran the railroad for more than 30 years and he came back just for this, he

has a real passion for it. He told me ‘I love coming out here and working and not having to deal with the administration of the railroad.’ I guess that’s what I’m for,” Jonas said with a laugh.

Changes this year The railroad is celebrating its 113th year in 2020, but with the coronavirus pandemic, operations have seen some

change.

“Like everyone, we’ve had to do things differently to protect our volunteers and our guests,” railroad Operations Manager Jim Feyerherm said. “The No. 1 change is we’re requiring masks. Masks for the train crews and masks for everyone who comes in.”

Restoring history Railroad Museum works on two historical interurban cars Volunteers at the East Troy Railroad are working to bring two historic interurban railroad cars back into operating condition.

Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Car 761 ran on the North Shore Line between the Loop in Chicago and downtown Milwaukee from 1930 to 1963. Chicago South Shore and South Bend Car 6 ran on the South Shore Line between Chicago and South Bend, Indiana from 1926 to 1983.

“Restoring both of these cars is a priority for us, each for a different reason,” East Troy Railroad Museum President Ryan Jonas said. “We depend on our South Shore fleet to run our popular special event trains, like the Bunny Trains and Christmas Trains. South Shore Car 6 will give us a backup in case one of the other South Shore cars needs repairs. We want Car 761 back in service so we can showcase another interurban car with Wisconsin history. Our historic railroad runs on the only remaining electric interurban track in the state.”

The East Troy Railroad Museum acquired Car 761 from a Michigan museum in 2001 and started initial work to restore the car soon afterward.

Volunteers replaced the roof, had new doors made, and purchased fabric to reupholster the seats.

Efforts ground to a halt when volunteers discovered structural deterioration on the north end of the car. When a qualified welder joined the volunteer team in East Troy, the museum’s board of directors agreed that it was time to restart the restoration work.

Car 6 came to the museum in 2010 via the National Park Service at Indiana Dunes National

Lakeshore (now Indiana Dunes National Park).

When the South Shore Line’s original 1920s-era cars were replaced by new equipment in 1982 and 1983, a Congressman serving northern Indiana worked to pass a bill to transfer the retired cars to the Park Service.

The goal was to establish a museum at Indiana Dunes. Four of the stops on the South Shore Line are at stations in or near the dunes. When the planned museum failed to gain funding, the retired cars were transferred to several other museums.

The East Troy Railroad received five of the cars, including Car 33, which was restored to service in 2016.

Car 6 needs to have its wheels and trucks refurbished, needs two traction motors rebuilt, needs its seats reupholstered, needs new flooring, some rewiring, and much cosmetic work to restore its appearance. The pantographs above the car must be removed and replaced by trolley poles, so the car can run on the East Troy Railway. A new canvas roof will also be installed.

In addition to the structural work, Car 761 needs body work, needs to be repainted inside and out, needs new flooring, needs the seats reupholstered, needs the electrical system cleaned, repaired and tested, needs the brake lines reinstalled to both control stands, needs new doors and new glass installed on the south end of the car, and needs the stairways reinstalled on both ends.

How to help The museum depends largely upon donations to fund restorations of its historic equipment.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for people who would like to support the restoration efforts. A link to the page is posted on the East Troy Railroad Museum’s website at easttroyrr.org/projects, or at charity.gofundme.com/ss-car-6-and-ns-car-761restoration.

In addition to the required masks, the railroad now requires reservations and contactless payment from its passengers.

“We’re trying to have all reserved seating and we’re encouraging people to go to our website or go on Facebook to get to our websites and make their reservations and payments.

We also have a QR code at the depot people can use with their phone, but we’re not selling tickets inside the depot.”

This year, the trains are only departing and arriving at the East Troy Depot.

“We’re not taking on passengers at the Elegant Farmer or Indian Head Park in Mukwonago this year,” Feyerherm said. “The trains still stop at the Elegant Farmer for people to shop, but we don’t take on new passengers there.”

While passengers may leave the train to shop at the Elegant Farmer, they must take the same train back to the depot, which is another change.

Eating is also not allowed on the trains, Jonas said.

As with many of the social distancing guidelines, Jonas said there has been some pushback, but for the most part, people have been good about considering the safety of the railroad volunteers and other passengers.

“But we do get some who just don’t care,” he said.

The railroad is operating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with trains departing the East Troy Depot at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Friday and Sunday and 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“We either use open cars or cars with the windows open, depending on the weather,” Feyerherm said.

“Come and ride the train and support the railroad, we’re open and it’s a fun way to spend the day.”

Skiing and snowboarding remain very popular among athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who refuse to be relegated to the couch upon the arrival of winter weather. For the millions of men, women and children who can’t wait to hit the slopes each winter, the thrill of racing down snow-covered mountainsides is a feeling unlike any other.

While skiing and snowboarding are popular recreational activities, they can still be dangerous.

As a result, it’s imperative that anyone who plans to hit the slopes this winter takes steps to ensure this winter sports season is as safe and successful as it is thrilling.

Many athletes and outdoor enthusiasts anxiously anticipate the day when they can return to the slopes to ski or snowboard. But it’s important that skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels exercise caution so their winter sports season starts off on the right foot.

Your risk of injury is greater if you are out of shape upon returning to the slopes, so start exercising as the season approaches so you can regain any flexibility you might have lost since you last slipped on your skis or strapped into your snowboard.

Some strength training exercises can reduce your risk of broken bones should you fall while on the mountain, and the better shape you’re in the more energy you will have to stay on the slopes.

Take lessons Novice skiers and snowboarders might want to take a refresher course at the onset of each ski and snowboarding season. Qualified instructors can reacquaint you with techniques you might have forgotten since last winter, and such instruction can reduce your risk of injury.

Ease yourself back in While it can be tempting to pick up where you left off last season, going too hard on your first trip can increase your risk of injury.

Ease yourself back in on your first few trips down the mountain, warming up on easier slopes until you once again get the hang of things and feel comfortable tackling more difficult trails. If you do find yourself struggling on a slope, the NSAA advises that you always leave your skis and snowboard on and side step down the slope.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has snowmobiling information about local requirements on its website at dnr.wi.gov.

Safe Riders offers these tips on dangers to avoid from its Snowmobile Safety Awareness Program website.

It is important that riders consider potential dangers like impaired operation, speed and careless operation, roads and railroads, ice, and avalanches – all which can be present when snowmobiling. This section provides tips on how to avoid these dangers.

Impaired operation from alcohol consumption or drug use is a major cause of snowmobiling crashes. Alcohol and prescription, over-the-counter, or illegal drugs all increase risks to an unacceptable level whenever operating any motor vehicle.

When combined with other factors such as excessive speed, careless operation, night

riding or riding in unfamiliar terrain, use while snowmobiling can become especially deadly.

Safe snowmobiling requires riders to maintain peak vigilance and caution at all times. Individual snowmobilers must exercise sound personal judgment and make smart choices in order to be able to respond to continuously changing surroundings when snowmobiling. Consequently, any physical or mental impairment poses a serious threat to operators and other riders.

Alcohol and drugs negatively affect a driver’s vision, balance, coordination, and reaction time. Don’t drink and ride or let others in your group drink and ride. It simply isn’t worth risking your life or the lives of others. Wait until you’re done riding for the day and then, if you choose to consume alcohol, do it responsibly and in a setting where you won’t be driving.

Drivers who operate a motor vehicle while impaired tend to focus only on what’s directly in front of them. This is similar to having “tunnel vision” and the driver may not pay attention to anything else around them while only looking just a few feet directly in front of their snowmobile. This can be deadly since it prevents drivers from recognizing dangers outside their “tunnel.”

Alcohol consumption negatively affects an individual’s sense of balance and

coordination. This reduced coordination decreases your ability to drive a snowmobile in a safe manner, meaning you can easily become a hazard to yourself and to others on the trail. Safe operation of a snowmobile requires that you be able to coordinate operation of the snowmobile’s throttle and brake with your hands, as well as be able to shift your weight for steering. This becomes difficult once alcohol or drug related impairment starts to build in the body’s system. Reaction time refers to the amount of time a driver needs to first recognize and then react to a hazard or danger. Often times, there are only a few seconds that pass before you hit the hazard. Since alcohol or drug use always slows your reaction time, operating a snowmobile while impaired could lead to severe or deadly injuries.

There are many situations when you may need to react quickly while snowmobiling.

This includes when slowing down behind another snowmobile, approaching a road crossing, making a turn, or negotiating a curve in the trail. You may also need to react quickly when encountering an on-coming snowmobile, a fallen tree, or a depression in the snow. In all cases, a reduced reaction time due to impairment could prove to be fatal.
