Bad driving habits aren’t just obnoxious, they’re also dangerous – motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 38,000 people having lost their lives and nearly 4.4 million injured in collisions in 2019, according to the National Safety Council.

“Many car collisions are entirely preventable,” said Kevin Quinn, vice president of claims and customer experience at Mercury Insurance. “The simple solution is for drivers to be responsible, obey traffic laws and stay focused on the road. Don’t play with your phone while you’re driving, don’t speed and don’t drink and drive. And if you practice these things regularly and keep your driving record free of accidents and traffic violations, it could lower auto insurance rates.”

Quinn recommends the following four tips to stay safe behind the wheel.

Remove distractions

The majority of crashes are caused by distracted drivers. Driver distractions extend beyond texting – anything that takes your attention away from the road is a distraction. While you should put your phone away when behind the wheel, some driving tech can actually help improve your driving habits, such as a usage-based insurance program that comes with a virtual coach to let you know how you can

Be aware of your speed

Speeding is one of the most common causes of traffic-related deaths, so pay attention and stick to posted speed limits - they’re there to keep you safe. Give yourself some extra time for your drive so there’s no need to rush and be sure to exercise extra caution while driving in bad weather.

Pay attention to other drivers

Eliminating distractions and leaving a safe distance between your vehicle and other drivers on the road are two ways to lessen the chance of a crash and lower your insurance rates.

Following a car too closely reduces the time you have to react if the car you are following suddenly slows or stops. This

can lead to a rear-end collision, which is the most common auto insurance claim, according to Mercury Insurance. Make sure you give yourself enough time and distance to react to the car in front of you.

“Drivers may also want to consider enrolling in a usage-based insurance program to help improve their driving skills,” adds Quinn. “These apps and devices allow drivers to get a crystal-clear view of their behavior and see which areas need some improvement. Plus, auto insurance customers who enroll in these programs may even qualify for a discount.”

5 reasons to accelerate your car maintenance Car maintenance is often a scheduled chore when you’re regularly driving.

However, if you’re driving less due to the current environment, maintenance can easily become a lesser priority or even completely forgotten.

Hankook Tire’s latest Gauge Index found that as daily driving decreased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, nearly one-third (30%) of Americans have done less car cleaning and maintenance too.

But car maintenance is always important, especially as drivers around the country gradually resume their travels and hit the road. Hankook Tire found that 60% of Americans expect to take more car trips moving forward.

First and foremost – Regular car maintenance helps increase safety when driving. This is especially important if your car has been parked for a while.

Be sure to check your fluids (oil, washer, coolant, etc.) and inspect the tires to make sure that they haven’t lost their pressure. After all, the Gauge revealed 70% of Americans have not regularly been checking tire pressure during the pandemic.

Low tire pressure can lead to several issues such as poor performance, premature wear and higher rolling resistance, which can impact fuel efficiency.

With the median price of a set of four tires ranging from $300 to $600, investing in regular tire upkeep such as rotations and alignment when necessary, helps deter more costly repairs down the road – making both your car, and your money, go further. And, you’ll save time.

Regularly scheduled basic maintenance appointments traditionally don’t take too long – and some dealerships even offer special pick-up and drop-off appointments so you never have to leave the comfort of your home.

Just like a regular gym routine helps keep your muscle groups firing on all cylinders, regular trips to the mechanic can provide the same benefit to your car. Whether it’s a crushing leg day (suspension) or a cardio workout (engine), routine inspection of your shoes (tires) will

Cleanliness

Every month, double-check to make sure headlights and taillights are working, fluids are topped off, and your belt and hose systems are running smoothly.

The safest place for kids in the car Riding in a vehicle can be an exciting prospect for children. Such rides provide a chance to see the world outside of the house, and the speed with which scenery is flying by can be exhilarating for young minds.

Children are first introduced to riding in cars as babies, when child safety seats will keep them secure. Although laws vary depending on where people are driving, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children remain in a rear-facing car seat until age 2 or older.

As they get older and gain weight, children who have outgrown the rearfacing weight or height limit for their seats should use a forward-facing seat with a harness for as long as possible, up to the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat manufacturer, says the AAP. When children are old enough to graduate from car seat to booster seat to sitting in the car with only a seat belt, parents may wonder about where their youngsters can sit when riding in a vehicle. One area of the car tends to be safer than others for children. Researchers from the University of Buffalo who studied crash-related fatalities in relation to seat location discovered that the backseat is 59 to 86 percent safer than the front seat. What’s more, the middle seat in the back of the car is 25 percent safer than the window seats.

The science behind the study is that the middle seat offers the most distance from impact during a collision, or what the industry calls “the crumple zone.” The outer seats will be more affected, while the middle seat remains more insulated.

However, the middle seat is only the safest when used with a full seat belt, rather than just a lap harness; otherwise, children should sit in the back where a full

In addition, it can be tempting to cave under pressure and allow tweens to ride in the front of the car when they ask to do

so or say that it is embarrassing to ride in back — since all of their friends are riding up front. The organization Safe Ride 4 Kids says studies show the safest place in the car for tweens is the back, until they are at least 13 years of age.

Riding in the middle seat in the back of the car is the safest place for passengers, including children. Parents and caregivers should keep safety in mind when kids are in the car.

THE DANGER OF DROWSY DRIVING When it comes to accidents behind the wheel, people may be quick to blame inebriated drivers. Although drunk, drugged and distracted driving is an epidemic, there is another concern on the nation’s roadways – drowsy driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving is responsible for tens of thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths every year. These numbers continue to grow and may not even be accurate.

The National Institute of Medicine believes a more accurate assessment of annual drowsy driving-related fatalities is closer to 6,000 per year. The Canadian Automobile Association says 20 percent of accidents in Canada are attributed to drowsy driving.

The National Sleep Foundation says roughly half of adult drivers in the United States admit to consistently getting behind the wheel while feeling drowsy, and about 20 percent admit to falling asleep behind the wheel at some point over the last year.

Just like drugs and alcohol or

distractions like eating or texting while driving, drowsy driving impairs reaction time behind the wheel. Drivers’ ability to recognize hazards, avoid such hazards and sustain their attention is adversely affected the more tired they are.

In fact, the National Safety Council says driving after going more than 20 hours without sleep is equivalent to driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent.

According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the risk of crash depends on the amount of hours of sleep. Whereas getting six to seven hours of sleep equates to 1.3 times the crash risk, getting less than four hours of sleep increases that risk to 11.5 times.

In addition to getting more rest, experts advise reading medication labels to determine if side effects include drowsiness. People who are often tired or are having sleeping difficulties also should schedule appointments with their doctors to address this issue.

Attempt to get off the highway. After turning on their hazard lights, drivers who know or suspect something is wrong with their vehicles should try to get off the highway. Move into the right-hand lane as soon as possible, ultimately trying to get onto the shoulder.

Set up flares Set up flares or triangles behind the vehicle. If it’s safe to do so, set up flares or triangles behind the vehicle. If the flares or triangles are buried in the trunk, drivers can ask a passenger to serve as lookout and warn them if they need to get away from the vehicle.

Convenient tech features you want in your vehicle Technology has dramatically changed the way people live, and has increasingly changed how they drive as well. While power windows were once coveted as high-tech features, the sophisticated technology available in modern cars and trucks can make earlier tech seem like child’s play.

While some vehicle technology is designed to keep you safe, other tech is all about comfort and convenience. The following are five options to consider when purchasing your next vehicle.

Telematics Telematics is a system that can remotely monitor many components of a vehicle’s diagnostics and driver behavior. While this telecommunications technology already is implemented in delivery, towing and public transportation industries, it can be utilized in the private market to track live weather conditions, traffic, parking lot information, fuel consumption, and battery power.
