Mobile phones have become an essential part of life for most people, helping them stay connected and increase productivity. However, this technology can also be a distraction when driving, which puts everyone on the road at risk.

More than one-quarter of all car crashes involve phone use, both with handsets and hands-free, the National Safety Council reports. Considering many states and countries don’t yet compile and report data on cellphone use following a crash, this number is likely much higher.

Distracted driving isn’t just an issue for young adults. High technology use means this is a problem across generations. For professionals in particular, the expectation to stay productive and reachable means a constant temptation to use cellphones when driving.

Recognizing the ethical and liability issues that arise when employees drive while distracted, employers across the country have begun implementing distracted-driving policies. Typically, these policies prohibit employees from using mobile phones while driving on company time.

In January 2017, the NSC reported that Cargill was the largest privately held company to prohibit the use of mobile devices, including hands-free technology, while an employee is driving on behalf of the company. Cargill’s Chairman and CEO David MacLennan just marked the oneyear anniversary of following the policy.

to avoid distracted driving

“I had to try the policy myself first,” says MacLennan. “Once I knew what it would take to go completely cellphone free in my car, I could then make it work for our entire company.”

Based on his experience, MacLennan offers these six simple steps for anyone looking to eliminate distracted driving yet stay productive and responsive to your job.

l Auto response

Use a free automated response app to let callers know that you’re driving and can’t take the call. You can personalize the response so incoming calls or texts receive a text message saying you’re on the road.

l Do not disturb

If you’re driving a vehicle outfitted with communication technology, use its “do not disturb” feature to unplug from calls and texts while behind the wheel.

l Block drive times

Just as you schedule meetings, use shared calendars to block times you’ll be driving. This alerts anyone else connected to your calendar when you’ll be out of touch.

TO HELP YOUR FAMILY STAY SAFE ON THE ROAD Today’s cars come with some impressive features. But no matter what up-to-date tech your car boasts, it’s your tires that connect it to the road, playing a crucial role in safety and performance.

With more than a century of experience, the experts at Cooper Tires are offering facts and tips every driver should know.

Air pressure

Proper inflation can extend a tire’s life and increase fuel efficiency, saving you money. Don’t be fooled by visuals, however. Even when tires look properly inflated, they may be under-inflated by as much as 50 percent. Also, tire pressure decreases when temperatures drop, so the changing seasons are a good reminder to check pressure.

Ensure valve caps are on every tire, and when replacing tires, have a new valve stem assembly installed. They keep out moisture and dirt, and provide an additional seal to maintain inflation.

Tread

Tire tread helps maintain traction, improves handling and helps prevent hydroplaning. Additionally, bald tires are more likely to be damaged by potholes and other road hazards. The tread on your tires should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep.

Replacing tires

While ideally, you’ll replace all four tires at once, if you can only purchase two, the new pair should always be installed on the rear axle. This will help maintain control on wet roads and during sudden maneuvers.

Never purchase or install used tires.

Used tires, especially those with an unknown history, should be considered dangerous.

Seasonal considerations

“All season” tires are designed for yearround moderate weather. For severe winter conditions, install winter tires formulated to improve braking and handling on snow and ice. Many brands identify winter tires with a special icon. On Cooper Tires for example, look for the 3-Peak Mountain or Snowflake symbol located on the tire’s sidewall.

Self-inspection

A 10-minute, do-it-yourself inspection will get you road-ready. Follow these steps monthly and before long road trips.

Air pressure

Check air pressure when tires are cool

(a minimum of three hours after driving).

For proper inflation pressure, don’t check the tire’s sidewall, which indicates maximum pressure allowed. Instead, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual or the placard found on the driver’s side doorjamb, glove box or fuel door.

Remove the valve cap, take the tire gauge and press firmly on the valve stem. If the reading is lower than the recommended level, add air and check again. Over inflated? Push on the metal valve core with the nub on the back of the tire gauge. Once the recommended pressure is reached, replace the valve cap.

On the 2017-18

Tread

Insert the edge of a penny in the tire tread with Lincoln’s head down. If the top of his head is visible at any point around the tire, it’s time to replace the tire.

Overall condition

Check for cuts, cracks, splits, and punctures, irregular wear and bulges.

If any are spotted, or if you’re doubtful about the condition of your tires, get a professional inspection.

“When thinking about vehicle maintenance, regular oil changes likely come to mind first,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A quick review of the why, when, where and how of changing your vehicle’s oil is a good way to see the value of basic auto care.”

WHY Motor oil lubricates the moving

parts in your engine, preventing wear by keeping the engine clean, removing contaminants and regulating engine temperature to prevent overheating.

Neglecting to check and change your vehicle’s oil can lead to expensive repairs, including engine failure.

WHEN Check your vehicle owner’s manual;

most will recommend changing the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, other factors such as harsh weather conditions, driving in stop-and-go traffic

or on dusty dirt roads, towing a trailer, driving at high speeds and the age of your vehicle can all bring down this time interval, making it a safe bet to have the oil checked at the lower end.

WHERE An oil change performed by a

professional technician is a quick, lowcost vehicle service. When taking your car in for maintenance or repairs, be sure that the shop employs ASE-certified technicians. ASE certification means that the technicians take their training seriously and have passed tests to demonstrate their skills.

HOW Do-it-yourselfers can access the

It’s a myth that only new car dealers can service vehicles under warranty

True or false – Until your vehicle is out of warranty, it must be serviced by the new car dealer or the factory warranty will be void.

Although many people would have answered “true,” the correct answer is “false,” according to the Car Care Council.

By law, independent repair shops can also provide services to maintain your new-car warranty. Consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which prohibits a manufacturer from voiding the vehicle warranty because service was done by a non-dealer.

According to the FTC, “It’s illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads and inspections.”

It’s also important to note that the “Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part.”

When using a non-dealer, independent aftermarket shop to maintain your vehicle, the council strongly recommends you keep records and receipts for all maintenance done to the vehicle and adhere to scheduled maintenance requirements.

If a warranty claim arises, these records will provide proof that maintenance has been performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements.

“It’s a common misconception that only car dealers can perform the routine maintenance and repairs on a newer vehicle that is under warranty,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The truth is that consumers can have routine repairs performed by their local independent repair shop or do the work themselves without affecting the warranty.”

Car sales rev up especially during the week between Christmas and New Year’s, when dealerships may see sales jump 78 percent over the first part of December, according to Edmunds.com, a leading online resource for automobiles.

But buying a used vehicle can be a daunting task when you consider all the variables – the price, vehicle history, cost of gas, cost of insurance and more.

These tips can help you during the car-buying process:

Have an expert check under the hood and into the car’s past before driving off the lot

Understand what you can afford

An independent mechanic can give your potential car a thorough exam. In addition, a Carfax report will help you understand the vehicle’s maintenance and accident history.

“You want to ensure you have a reliable vehicle and that six months from now it isn’t going to be in the shop or stranded on the side of the road,” Pollard says.

Look at the overall cost. The purchase price of the vehicle doesn’t tell the whole financing story, Pollard says.

Don’t forget to factor in the average cost of maintenance, monthly insurance, fuel costs and additional warranties along with your monthly payment.

Don’t settle for the extended vehicle warranty proposed by the dealership

Get pre-approved before stepping foot on the dealer’s lot

Extended vehicle protection can be beneficial for a used car purchase, but make sure you look at other options available, not just what the dealer offers you.

“Members don’t often realize USAA offers extended vehicle protection,” Pollard says. “The dealer is going to offer it, and it can be pretty expensive.”

You don’t always need to involve your insurance company after an auto accident.

Three reasons not to file a claim for that fender bender Although you’ll almost certainly want to have your insurance company cover the cost of a car accident involving multiple cars and serious damage, with plenty of other crashes, you may want to simply cover the cost yourself. Here are some conditions and situations when that option can make sense. The more of these that apply, the more you should consider simply paying the damage yourself.

The damage cost is close to your deductible Any damage you do to another vehicle is covered under the liability component of your policy, while damage you inflict on your own car will be handled through your collision or comprehensive insurance, assuming you have such coverage (some people drop it for older vehicles).

If you estimate the damage inflicted to your car to be below your deductible, or even slightly above it,

you should just handle the repairs out of pocket. If the damages are $300, but the deductible is $200, you would save just $100 by filing a claim and your premiums could easily rise by more than that in the long run.

You alone are involved In an accident with no more than two drivers, where neither is injured and the damage appears to be minimal, you can both agree to not call the insurance company.

There are, however, several reasons to be cautious about doing that.

The first is that the other driver can at any time renege on the agreement to not involve the insurance companies.

A second is that even seemingly minor fender benders involving two cars can be far pricier to fix than most drivers would expect – in the thousands of dollars, for even a slow-speed (say, 10 mph) collision.

The upshot here? Not involving the insurance company is best reserved for mishaps that involved your vehicle

alone, or one in which you know, or have other reason to trust, the other driver.

You’ve filed for other accidents Going it alone on a minor solo crash can spare you long-term pain. That’s because filing too many claims through your insurer can cause your rates to soar, possibly costing you hundreds if not thousands over the years following the claim.

The effect of making a claim varies by the state, the insurer and how long it is since you submitted a claim, if at all. But the hikes can be hefty – 20 percent or more, according to research by the finance experts at ValuePenguin.

Keep your car breathing well – change the air filters Just as you need clean air to breathe, so does your car. The vehicle’s air filters are what make that possible.

The vehicle’s engine air filter traps dirt particles that can cause damage to engine cylinders, cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings and bearings, leading to the engine losing power. The air filter also plays a critical role in keeping pollutants from contaminating the airflow sensor on fuel-injected cars.

A normal-wear item that requires regular checks and replacement, air filters should be inspected at each oil change and replaced annually or when showing other signs of contamination.

The cabin air filter is responsible for cleaning the air entering the passenger compartment. Under normal circumstances, it helps trap pollen, bacteria, and dust and exhaust gases that may find their way into

a vehicle’s heating, ventilation and airconditioning system, compromising interior air quality and damaging the system.

Most cabin air filters are accessed through the panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or placed within the interior of the vehicle. A cabin air filter should not be cleaned and reinstalled.

Instead, it should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or per the owner’s manual.

“Air filters are your vehicle’s first line of defense against contaminants that reduce cabin air quality and negatively impact engine performance,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council.

Road salt means safe roads State and municipal departments of transportation are gearing up their winter maintenance plans to prepare for snow and ice. In addition to plows, road salt is an important tool to keep roads clear. Every year these agencies stockpile sufficient salt to last the winter season and store it in strategically placed barns.

“Snowfighters” (those responsible to clear snow from roadways) are out in force in salt trucks before snow and ice is expected. They pretreat the roads with salt brine, a mix of road salt and water. This brine sticks to the road surface and helps prevent ice from forming in the first place, making winter travel safer. And the safety issue is a substantial one. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation show that there are about 115,000 people injured every year on snowy, slushy or icy pavements and more than 1,600 people killed each year on winter roads.

The good news is that a Marquette University study showed that a good winter maintenance program that uses road salt reduces accidents on winter roads by about 88 percent and can reduce injuries by up to 85 percent.

A key goal for many agencies is tracking their winter maintenance actions in great detail and ensuring that their actions are optimized to meet their goal of safe roads for the driving public. In Idaho, for example, new salt-spreading units allow them to track how much salt they apply to the road, and other sensors allow them to check that the road is responding as expected to the salt application, and is not getting slippery. This also helps reduce costs. They have seen a 29 percent reduction in annual winter maintenance costs since introducing the new technology.

Maintaining mobility is also a big concern, as people need to get to work or the grocery store and kids need to get to school. Clear roads allow ambulances and other emergency vehicles to perform their life-saving services.

A study for the American Highway Users Alliance found that the cost of having roads closed down is substantial – between $300 million and $700 million a day for a state in

Auto repair shop specializes in high-end imports

Robert Gullifer, owner of A&B Automotive, LLC, in East Troy, can fix just about anything with a motor and that includes imports such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

“I can repair all makes and models, but I specialize in imports,” he said. “I don’t want people to think that’s all I do, though. I’m here to help anyone who needs their car fixed.”

Gullifer opened his East Troy repair shop in July and has seen his clientele increase to about 60 in less than two months. He offers all the standard repair and maintenance services normally seen in an automotive shop.

“I do it all, from oil changes to engine job,” he said.

“Brakes, transmissions, you name it, we’ll do it.”

That desire to handle whatever the customer needs is what drives Gullifer.

“I take care of the customer and the customer takes care of me,” he said. “A lot of places charge you a lot and want the money right away. For me, I want to be fair with everybody.

I want them to tell their friends and I want them to come back. It’s the kind of guy I am.”

So far, his business practices are paying off for the 44-year-old mechanic.

“I was raised Catholic and my mom taught me the right way to be. I owe her a lot,” Gullifer said. “The best thing about this job is the gratification you get when you do work on someone’s car and they recommend you to someone else.

“It feels pretty good to know that you treated somebody like they’re supposed to be treated and they tell everyone else.”

Gullifer opened his own repair shop after working in the industry for 22 years, the last 18 of them at International Auto in West Allis.

“I worked on Mercedes there,” he said. “It’s where I learned how to fix the imports.”

Gullifer, who lives in Wind Lake with his wife, Amy, has four kids and said they were the reason he started his own business.

“I wanted more time with my kids and an easier schedule,” he said. “This gives me time to spend with my family.”

Gullifer has settled into his shop on Highway ES, which next to Care More Performance Inc., another automotive repair shop, and has plans to offer used cars for sale in addition to his regular repair services.

“I’m going to be selling cars in the next two to three weeks,” he said. “When you sell someone a decent car and earn their trust, it comes back to you. It’s all about being honest and helping people out.”

Gullifer will have about 10 cars on his lot at a time and hopes to attract customers from East Troy and the surrounding communities of Lake Geneva, Mukwonago, Elkhorn and even further.

“It’s quality work at fair prices,” he said. “I’m a member of this community and it’s important to me to treat people the way they should be treated, with respect.”

direct and indirect earnings. One study suggested that the costs of maintaining the road system during a winter storm are completely recovered in the first 25 minutes of wintermaintenance activities, because of the improvements in safety and mobility that the improved road conditions bring about.

Care for the environment is also a key issue in safe and sustainable snowfighting. Several studies have shown that when road salt is properly applied at the right time and

place to keep roadways safe and passable, environmental impacts can be effectively managed and minimized.

Modern roadways are not a natural feature of the environment and are specifically engineered to satisfy our demand for personal and commercial mobility – factors that are basic to the quality of life.

A comprehensive study by environmental researchers at the University of Waterloo and Environment Canada found that when best practices, as outlined in Canada’s

Road Salt Code of Practice, were used, chloride levels were reduced by half. Another study by the Guelph University Research Review found that recycling stormwater runoff could reduce chloride peaks in streams without adversely affecting road safety. In cooperation with the city of Toronto, researchers used the EPA Storm Water Management Model to design computer-controlled stormwater containment systems to serve as a guide for future mitigation applications.

Good news for power sports enthusiasts – Infotainment features from the auto industry are now being customized for off-road. The new enhanced riding experience connects drivers not only to their vehicle, but to their passengers, other drivers, and friends and family back home.

This not only helps keep you and other riders from getting lost, it enhances everyone’s overall experience by letting you leave more space between vehicles. The app will even alert you when friends are close by, and you can track and share your ride stats directly to your social feed.

There’s also seamless device control in one spot. Get text and call notifications right on the screen for easier viewing. Listen to music either through Bluetooth or an AM/ FM radio, also on the display.

To help you communicate with your passengers, there’s an accessory Sena headset connected via Bluetooth. Loading, unloading and traversing obstacles is easier as the display integrates with standard front- and rear-wired cameras.

Along with being available for select RZR vehicles, the technology is also available on the Indian Chieftain and Indian Roadmaster, and enables fleet-management capabilities in Polaris’ GEM line of electric vehicles.
