Another year around the sun T he annual Community Guide marks my anniversary as the East Troy Times editor and when I sit down to write this, it’s a time I reflect on the changes in the community. This past year has been another rollercoaster ride as we all had hoped the COVID-19 pandemic would be in the rearview mirror. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened even with vaccines readily available. Variants, vaccine hesitancy and waning immunity for those vaccinated have led to an increase in cases in the state heading into the holiday season. The one ray of hope is that fully vaccinated people are much less likely to end up hospitalized or die if they do contract the virus. As we approach the new year, everyone is hoping for a return to normal. However, even with the challenges
of the pandemic, East Troy has seen continued growth and a community that has banded together to offer help where needed. The repaving of Highway ES and the Village Square improvement project was a bit of a headache for everyone this year, especially with the delays, but as winter approached, the road was paved. While there will be some follow up work in spring, the square was open in time for the annual Santa on the Square celebration. In November, the East Troy Village Board approved the contractor bid to remove the East Troy dam and restore the Honey Creek. Work was set to begin in December. The East Troy School District returned students and staff to its buildings in • CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Area residents were offered the chance to show their version of East Troy through the lens of their cameras in the 13th annual East Troy Times Community Guide photography competition. This year, we had four photographers submit photos – Roberta Moeller, John Vilanj, Jeri Davis and John Finney. The photographers who submit photos for the contest showcase people, places and events that give this area its color. The East Troy Times wants to thank them for sharing their art. Winners were selected on originality, subject matter, visual appeal and connection to East Troy. The winning entries are featured throughout this publication.

September for in-person learning for the second year in a row, amid the pandemic. The district did not require face masks after debating this issue and asking for input from the families. The district did modify its mitigation measures to plan for increased cases in classrooms and possible outbreaks. In late November, the popular restaurant, Double D’s Pub and Eatery, caught fire and community members rallied around the owners, employees and tenant who were all affected. A GoFundMe page was set up by the owners for the sole purpose of helping the out-of-work employees and tenant replace what they lost. Examples of kindness and compassion over the year were a shining light in the darkness. While not everyone agrees on everything, the desire to help out where possible and be an active part of the community could be seen at the year’s events, big and small. It’s been a year of getting reacquainted with the neighbors and meeting new friends. After being locked up inside for more than a year, it was a welcome change. Here’s hoping 2022 continues that trend.
