According to a press release from Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, police are currently investigating an Attempted Carjacking that occurred on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 10:20 a.m. in the 500 block of N. Emroy.

gain control of the gun but was later found to be a replica gun.

The offenders were described as black males in their 20s, 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall with a thin build. Both were wearing all black clothing and surgical masks. One offender had white stripes on the side of his pants.

The victim suffered minor injuries and the offenders were unable to take his car. The offenders fled the scene in a silver late model Toyota RAV 4, southbound on Van Auken.

Police investigate roadway shooting at St. Charles, I-290 Detectives still seeking suspect, vehicle

According to a press release from Police Chief Michael Ruth and the City of Elmhurst, the Elmhurst Police Department was investigating a roadway shooting incident that occurred on St. Charles Road and the I-290 Expressway on Friday, Jan. 16, at approximately 2:30 a.m.

The victim reported observed a silver sedan following the victim’s vehicle driving west on the I-290 expressway from Chicago.

According to police, the silver sedan continued following as the victim exited the ramp to westbound St. Charles Road. As the victim merged onto St. Charles Road, the silver vehicle pulled alongside of the victim and an unknown suspect began firing gunshots at the victim’s vehicle. The vic-

tim’s vehicle was struck with several bullets. The victim was not injured.

The victim reported last seeing the suspect vehicle perform a U-turn and proceed east on St. Charles Road, possibly onto eastbound I-290, immediately after the shooting.

The interchange at St. Charles Road and I-290 was closed until approximately 5:30 a.m. on Friday evening, as evidence technicians searched for and collected evidence at the scene.

Elmhurst detectives are investigating the incident. The suspect vehicle is described as: A silver 1995 to 2003 BMW 5 series 4-door sedan with tinted windows.

Anyone with video footage or information about this incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

Fatal accident in Villa Park

On Thursday, Jan. 14 at about 1:39 p.m., the Villa Park police and fire department units were dispatched to the area of Kenilworth and Yale for a vehicle on fire. Upon arrival, police officers found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames with at least one occupant trapped inside the vehicle. The police officers and responding firefighters were unable to rescue the victim. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and it struck a tree prior to starting on fire. The case remains under investigation.

‘The sign is meant for anybody who voted for tyranny over freedom’ Cigar House owner defends ‘Biden voters keep out’ sign in store window

The day after the Nov. 3 election, Shaun Thompson—owner of the Elmhurst Cigar House in downtown Elmhurst—put a sign in the window of his business’ front door that’s sure to draw attention in an era in which the country is divided politically.

The orange, balloon-shaped sign, which is still posted, says: “Biden voters keep out!”

CBS Channel 2 News in Chicago ran a segment on Thompson, the Cigar House, the sign—and the reaction to it—on its Jan. 9 evening newscast.

Those whom Channel 2 interviewed outside of the Cigar House had these reactions when asked about the sign: “A little surprising, I guess.”

“I just find it really, truly appalling.”

“Pretty much that I would like to stay out. I would not go in.”

“I find that offensive.”

“I find it horrible.”

One woman, who identified herself as a Donald Trump supporter, said, “If somebody put ‘Trump supporters stay out,’ I wouldn’t find that a very kind thing to put.”

Recently interviewed by the Independent, Thompson says their reactions are fine with him.

He said he doesn’t want their business, anyway.

When asked how he would react if a business in Elmhurst put up a sign saying, “Trump supporters keep out,” Thompson replied, “They would do me a favor. I don’t want to spend my money with them, and I don’t want them to spend money with me. Let me be very clear: I don’t want to profit from people that have condescending attitudes and vehemently stand opposed to freedom, capitalism and liberty that I stand for. I don’t want their money.”

He added that posting the sign “is not a Donald Trump thing.”

“The policies that are embraced by the modern-day Democrat are policies of force on people that may not politically agree with their agenda,” said Thompson, who’s owned the store for around six years. “And their agenda is not the personal freedom, capitalism and the entrepreneurial spirit that I enjoy, that my family came to this country for, and that our veterans have fought and died for.

“The sign is meant for anybody who voted for tyranny over freedom. That includes Republicans.

I don’t want Mitt Romney or Adam Kinzinger in here, either.

“To me, this [sign] is something that I put [up] as a statement to do, really, the socialists and the Marxists that make up the Democrat party a favor.

I wanted to let them know, ‘Don’t give me your money. I find your agenda offensive, condescending and totalitarian.’”

CBS 2 Legal Analyst Irv Miller said in the Channel 2 report that the sign Thompson has at his store is a form of protected speech for the private business owner.

“There’s nothing in any antidiscrimination law—federal, state or local—that prohibits you from expressing your political beliefs, which is obviously what this store is doing,” Miller said.

Critics and threats Since the Channel 2 segment aired, Thompson said he and employees at the store have been criticized and threatened—including death threats and threats of violence. He said these threats have come through the mail, been posted on social media or have been fielded on the phone by store employees.

“I have a 75-year-old relative, a woman who works at the store,” he said. “They call up and they call her a [four-letter expletive that begins with the letter c] and they threaten her physically. Numerous letters. ‘I will be visited. They are going to come and shut me down.’ And I welcome them.

“Let them know they don’t scare me or intimidate me. Ironically, I have the people who practice the philosophies and politics of Nazis calling me a Nazi.”

“I could care less if it hurts my business,” he said.

“The policies that will be implemented by the fascistic, neo-Marxist philosophy of the modern-day Democrats are already going to hurt my business.

So, I’ll handle it.

“But I want all of the socialists, all of the Marxists, all of the fascists to hate me. I welcome the hate. Every letter, every threat, every name, every slanderous remark [I’ve received] proves my point.”

Supporters While Thompson has plenty of critics, he noted that he’s received plenty of support on social media, and from people coming into the store to support him. He said business, in fact, has increased.

Among the posts supporting Thompson on the Cigar House’s Facebook page: “I’ll be glad to order online from you.”

“I love you! I don’t even know you but you are awesome! Stay strong.”

“I support you good sir!!”

“If I smoked cigars I’d be there!!”

“My customers are very loyal,” Thompson said.

“They’re wonderful people and the vast majority are from Elmhurst.”

‘I am a classical liberal’ Displaying a sign in the front of your store that

tells Biden voters to keep out would lead one to assume that Thompson is a staunch supporter of now-former President Donald Trump.

“Then they don’t know me,” he said.

Thompson insists he is “a classical liberal.”

“I’m an American,” he said. “I support the beliefs and structures of Americanism. And I am a classical liberal. And a capitalist. People have tried to lump me into a certain political camp. The reality is there are no, or very few, classical liberals like myself.

“I have no policy of force. My philosophies don’t want to put anybody into force under any circumstances. And I believe in absolute equality of opportunity across the board. I believe in a flat taxation, and no picking and choosing of winners and losers in government. That is a minority belief in America today.”

Thompson hosts a Sunday evening program on WIND-AM 560 called “The Liberty Hour.” He says Trump had “terrible policies and very good policies.”

“I fought vehemently hard against his economic policies,” Thompson said. “I didn’t agree with ‘Trump-onomics.’ I didn’t agree with trade wars. I loved his philosophy on the military and taking our boys away from actions they should never be involved with. So good and bad like everyone else.”

Criminal trespassing, criminal damage

Jan. 13 A victim in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 1:46 p.m. that during the past two weeks, her son’s and her daughter’s vehicles had flat tires. On the above date, she found a nail in her vehicle’s tire and believes the incidents are related. There are ongoing issues with the alleged suspect. The officer spoke with the suspect, who related he does not know what happened to the victim’s vehicle.

Jan. 10-Jan. 11 Police said an unknown suspect broke the front plate glass door at a local business in the 1000 block of S. York and gained entry into the business sometime between the above dates. Items inside the store were disturbed however, nothing appears to have been taken.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance

Jan. 9 Police said officers in the 300 block of S. West responded to the above location at around 4:40 p.m. for the report of a domestic battery. The reporting officer met with the complainant who stated the suspect pushed her following a verbal argument. The suspect stated he pushed the complainant away after she punched him. No arrests were made due to conflicting statements from both parties.

Jan. 8 A 21-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery and driving while license suspended in the 100 block of S. York at

around 1 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a domestic dispute. The reporting officer met with the victim who stated the suspect threw a fork at him, striking him causing a small cut. The suspect fled the scene prior to an officer’s arrival, but was later located and taken into custody.

A reporting officer met with a complainant at a business in the 400 block of W. Madison at around 1 p.m. who stated he felt threatened after his supervisor yelled at him. This case is pending investigation.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol

Jan. 11 Geosvani Valenzuela, 47, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license revoked and no insurance subsequent to a roll-over accident near Grand and County Line at around 5:51 p.m.

Jan. 10 Cesar Burciaga, 38, of Chicago, was charged with DUI in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:01 a.m.

Alfredo L. Garcia, 20, of Addison, was charged with aggravated DUI, DUI-drugs, obstructing identification, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, driving while license revoked, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic signal subsequent to a hit and run traffic crash near Church and Lake at around 12:35 p.m. Police said Garcia also was found to have a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and a warrant from the Addison Police Department.

Quentin A. Logan, 31, of Forest Park, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Elm at around 12:53 a.m.

Jan. 4 Tyashana R. Williams, 23, of Chicago, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol and no valid driver’s license subsequent to at traffic stop near York and Industrial at around 11:20 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding

Jan. 12 Police said that subsequent to an attempted traffic stop near I-290 and York at around 1:50 a.m., Lartrell D. Goodwin, 24, of Chicago, failed to yield for emergency lights and sirens and fled at a high rate of speed. According to police another officer observed the suspect’s vehicle stopped in the roadway. Goodwin was charged with aggravated fleeing/eluding, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, no valid driver’s license, speeding, failure to signal and no insurance.

Jan. 10 While on patrol near York and Roosevelt at around 2:07 a.m., a reporting officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for no front registration plate displayed. The suspected vehicle fled from the reporting officer at a high rate of speed. An ISPERN broadcast was disseminated. The vehicle was last seen traveling eastbound on I-290.

Harassment, threats

Jan. 12 Patrick Petrillo, 53, of Elmhurst, was charged with harassment though electronic Communications in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 4:29 p.m. Police said Petrillo left the victim numerous voicemail messages and text messages. He admitted to texting and leaving messages for the victim, accord-

ing to police.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Jan. 12 Mario Perez, 18, of Villa Park, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, improper lighting and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Larch and North at around 12:12 a.m.

Deangelo D. Poe, 18, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis by the driver and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Prospect and Butterfield at around 12:34 a.m.

Francisco G. Santiago, 20, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis by a passenger in a vehicle near Grand and Lake at around 10:57 p.m.

Jan. 11 Georgio P. Moran, 23, of Wood Dale, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver and no registration plate light subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and St. Charles at around 10:43 p.m.

Jan. 10 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Roosevelt at around 2:16 a.m., Antonio Agee, 22, of Berwyn, was found to be driving while license suspended. A search of the suspect and vehicle yielded cannabis, which was not in an appropriate sealed, odorproof, child-resistant container, according to police. Agee was charged with driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle, expired registration, tinted windows and no insurance.

Jan. 9 Ricardo Magness, 32, of Redford Township, Mich., a passenger in a vehicle, was issued citations for possession of cannabis in a vehicle and illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor subsequent to a traffic stop near W. Lake and N. York at around 4:02 a.m.

Jan. 7 Christopher Cherico, 33, of Round Lake, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, improper transportation of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper display of registration, no valid driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a suspicious vehicle near N. York and E. Lake at around 9:55 p.m. Ashley Charboneau-Turner, 32, of Brighton, Mich., was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis. Michael Jones, 33, of Brighton, Mich., was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police said Eric Campofiore-Audet, 31, of Palatine, was found to have a valid warrant out of the Arlington Heights Police Department. Campofiore-Audet also was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Campofiore-Audet, Jones and Charboneau-Turner were all passengers in the vehicle.

Patrick Deleon, 27, of Cicero, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver and driving with one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near E. St. Charles and S. Fair at around 8:45 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Jan. 13 A complainant near South and Poplar told police at around 2 p.m. that as he was riding his bicycle home from school, a black, newer model, sedan (possibly a Ford Fusion) pulled up and a white male teenager told him to get

in the car if he wanted V-Bucks. The complainant said “no” and the vehicle left the scene. There was also a back seat passenger that could not be described.

Jan. 12 A complainant in the 200 block of May told police at around 8:20 p.m. that subsequent to reviewing his surveillance footage, he observed an unknown suspect described as a white male walk up his front steps and possibly try to open the locked front door. A neighbor related that he observed the suspect in the area and he appeared to be a door-todoor solicitor.

Jan. 11 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital at around 3:04 p.m. for the report of a subject who accidentally discharged his firearm and shot himself in the hand. The incident occurred in Lombard. The Lombard police were notified of the incident, responded to the hospital and took over the investigation.

Dec. 18 A complainant in the 300 block of W. Fremont told police at around 5:39 p.m. that he received several letters in the mail regarding unemployment benefits in someone else’s name. The reporting officer met with the recipient of the letter who stated an unknown suspect(s) filed for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Jan. 11 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Hawthorne at around 10:36 a.m. A victim told police that he received a phone call from an unknown suspect who stated she was investigating a case of money laundering involving the victim’s bank account. The victim provided his personal information to the suspect.

Jan. 9 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 7:36 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with loss prevention which stated an unknown suspect entered the store and stole merchandise. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, wearing glasses, all black clothing, gloves, a black baseball cap and a facemask. The unknown suspect entered a silver Chevrolet Blazer and fled the area.

Jan. 8 Attempted burglary was reported at a bank in the 700 block of W. North at around 9:45 a.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an unknown suspect(s) attempted to force entry to an exterior drive-thru ATM. The reporting officer spoke with a corporate investigator who stated two unknown suspects pried open an ATM but were unable to access the secured vault. Both suspects left the area in a white Ford box truck.

An investigation is pending.

Theft and forgery were reported at a store in the in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 9:20 p.m. A complainant told police he sold a gaming console at the above location to an unknown suspect. The unknown suspect paid the complainant $700 in cash in exchange for the gaming console. The complainant later realized the money was counterfeit. The suspect

Mayor Steve Morley delivers 22nd ‘State of Our City’ address Bids farewell as he plans not to seek re-election

It’s typically the first official business event of the new year. Every year, as many as 100 members of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) greet one another for the first time since the holidays on the second Thursday in January at Community Bank of Elmhurst (CBE) for the Mayor’s State of Our City address. Like most events, this year’s plans had to be changed.

Speaking from CBE’s Business Center, bank president Rich Reichert welcomed the audience, most of whom were attending virtually, as the program was broadcast on Elmhurst.TV. Reichert commented on working in the times of COVID-19.

“I have never been so proud of our employees and Board of Directors,” he said. “Without [a second thought], they continued to serve our community while keeping our customers and themselves safe.”

ECCI President and CEO John R. Quigley began the program with his annual “State of Our Chamber” message.

“The Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020 ranks as the most-challenging of times over my 21-year tenure as ECCI’s president and CEO and three decades of Chamber service,” he said. “We feel blessed to be relatively healthy when so many businesses and individuals have not survived this economic and medical crisis.”

Quigley announced that this January’s scheduled 102nd annual ECCI Awards Gala has been postponed until at least April, possibly as late as July as a mid-year celebration. He did announce the ECCI’s 2020 business and individual honorees, which include: A.J. “Toche” Terrones Business of the Year—Edward-Elmhurst Health; Ambassador of the Year— Betsy D’Onofrio, Inland Home Mortgage; Chairman’s Award—John Quigley; and Civic Hall of Fame— Scott and Charity Ahlgrim, Ahlgrim Funeral Home.

The mayor mentioned the peaceful protests over the summer and how the entire community—but especially downtown businesses—stepped up to protect themselves and their neighbors.

“We made the best choices,” Morley said. “A temporary hiring freeze, we cut programs like the trolley, parade funding, the purchase of vehicles.

The biggest thing we did was cut back on paving. We typically replace from three to seven miles of streets every year, but it’s the place that spending is most flexible. This year, we actually took a year off paving, but we kept patching and maintenance.”

Of course, it doesn’t help that the state of Illinois continues to be a thorn in the side of most communities due to its own financial struggles, often making cities and villages pick up the slack.

Morley said the City’s fund balance is expected to be at 25%-33%, or $12to $16-million.

“Our current fund balance is $16.2 million right now,” the mayor said.

“The emergency cash fund is at $1 million. What makes it tough is the shape the state is already in. We expect a shortfall of $6- to $9-million.

Still, we maintain a Moody’s AAA rating so we’re ready for G.O. bonds.

“We were able to keep taxes flat and yet maintained our city services.”

Morley noted that construction has slowed down somewhat, but it is expected to pick up later this year.

“The Zoning & Planning Commission heard more than 25 cases this year,” he said. “A total of 6,200 permits were issued for $163 million in new construction. In addition, there were 60 new home permits given.”

Morley ended with the announcement that he would not seek re-elec-

tion.

“What I will miss most are the people I get to work with,” he said. “From the elected officials to the staff and residents.”

Finally, Mayor Morley added a rather touching thank you to his wife Nancy whom, he said, has been a support to him for the past 14 years as he has served the City of Elmhurst,

“I would’ve preferred that it not take a world-wide pandemic and economic crisis to validate the indispensable role that our Chamber plays within the Elmhurst community,” Quigley said. “It was legendary …

“And when the going got tough in 2020, the Elmhurst Chamber never once stopped going.”

Current Board Chair Desiree Chen of Elmhurst University also gave brief remarks.

State of Our City address Morley began his remarks thanking the City staff for their hard work especially during the pandemic over this past year.

“We have 300 full-time and seven part-time employees, 17 elected officials, four committees, 16 Boards and Commissions and hundreds of volunteers,” he said. “I’m proud of the hard work [they’ve done] during this most difficult year. Not only did we survive, I believe we are stronger than ever.”

Morley said he was grateful to be granted executive authority by the City Council during the past several months to move things forward and make decisions more quickly. His first order allowed for temporary daycare. Another was to suspend late fees on water bills and halt disconnections for the time being. Restaurants were allowed to serve outdoors after 5 p.m. and then were allowed to expand into their parking areas and mark off more of the sidewalk with take-down barriers.

“We have issued $35 million in PPP loans and 1,000 local businesses took advantage,” he said. “Community Bank of Elmhurst and Lakeside Bank stepped up to help our businesses.”

Raja calls on the CDC to prevent vaccine waste Last week, I led a bipartisan letter signed by 32 members of Congress to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requesting that the CDC update its guidance to ensure that none of the vital COVID-19 vaccine doses would go to waste due to expiration related to distribution delays.

While the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) outlined an effective tier system for determining which groups receive the vaccine first, based on age, occupation, or other risk factors, and we should make every effort to prioritize higher risk individuals, common sense must be applied. In situations in which vaccines’ shelf lives create a choice in the final 24 hours between vaccinating lower priority individuals or no one, we must not allow a single dose to go to waste.

The distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine is an enormous undertaking for state governments, and more specific instructions from the CDC on the protocol for using doses before expiration will be helpful. The pandemic continues to rage on, and we can’t afford to waste vaccine doses due to poor planning.

As we stated in our letter, if the CDC does not outline the requested guidance on vaccine waste, we will provide a legislative solution to ensure that every vaccine is administered in a timely fashion.

Introduction of the Public Service Appreciation Through Loan Forgiveness Act As I continue to work with mem-

bers from both parties on a range of policies to increase college affordability, expand career and technical education, and reduce student debt, I recently introduced the Public Service Appreciation Through Loan Forgiveness Act. This bill would accelerate student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program for those who enter public service through working at government organizations and tax-exempt not-for-profit organizations such as teachers, police officers, municipal workers, and employees at nonprofits or charities.

My legislation shortens the period after which loan forgiveness begins for employees under the Public Loan Forgiveness Program from ten years to four years. Participants would have their student loans reduced by 10% after four years of regular, ontime payments while working in public service, 20% after six years, 50% after eight years, and would completely forgive remaining debts after ten years of regular payments.

While I am fortunate enough to have come through last Wednesday’s events unscathed, I remain shocked and appalled by what took place.

That’s why I voted to impeach Donald Trump for a second time.

Make no mistake: President Trump and his enablers are personally responsible for inciting the violence at the Capitol on January 6. The aim of this insurrection was to overturn the results of a free and fair election that he lost and came after weeks of the

President’s repeated lies about the 2020 election. After the violence began, President Trump refused to act to bring it to an end, and in the days since, he has shown no remorse.

If Congress is to uphold our oaths of office to protect and defend the Constitution, President Trump must be convicted by the Senate and removed from office immediately.

Yesterday, I spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives about the President’s unprecedented attack on the legislative branch.

Let me reassure you, this act of domestic terrorism may have temporarily delayed President electBiden’s certification on Wednesday

but Congress remained undeterred.

We returned to the House Floor that same day, certified the results, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are to be sworn in as the next President and Vice-President on January 20, 2021.

Another of the ‘First Ladies of Elmhurst’ Eleanor (King) Hookham El King (1909 – 2003)

[Reprinted with permission from The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century, the Independent has obtained permission from the Elmhurst History Museum to print stories from the book, published in 2001, recalling the outstanding women who have helped form our community. This week, we bring you Eleanor King Hookham. Some portions have been edited.]

Wilder Park was proclaimed “Best Suburban Park” in 1997 by Chicago Magazine, and Eleanor King Hookham deserves much credit for helping to bring this distinction to Elmhurst. Along with the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, the Veterans Memorial, the Conservatory with Formal Gardens, the Elmhurst Public Library, and the beautiful green grassy areas, stands the elegant Elmhurst Art Museum. A beautiful structure of steel and glass at the north end of the park, it too would be selected as “Best Suburban Art Museum” by Chicago Magazine in the summer of 2000. This museum had remained Eleanor King Hookham’s dream for decades. When construction was finally completed in 1997, the building exceeded everyone’s expectations, including her own!

Eleanor King was born in Marlow, Oklahoma on April 5, 1909 to William Frank King Sr. and Sara Caroline (Smith) King. Both parents enthusiastically encouraged their daughter’s artistic abilities.

“I started when I was very young doing sketches of the children in the neighborhood and their dogs and cats,” King said. “My mother had a green thumb. We always had fresh cut flowers in the house. So she would say, ‘Eleanor, you go paint those flowers before they wilt!’ So I’ve been painting flowers since I was ten years old!”

When the family moved to Pensacola, Fla., they lived right on the shore of Pensacola Bay. “It was wonderful to see the moon rise and the sun rise right in front of our home.”

That gave young Eleanor the opportunity to paint the Gulf of Mexico.

“I only paint what I really live and really know.”

Unbelievably, Eleanor had but one year of formal training at the age of 14. She studied with Miss Martha Avey, an art instructor at Oklahoma

City College. Eleanor credits that sole teacher with instilling in her the basics of color, composition and perspective. Plus, Miss Avey piqued her young student’s imagination about the alluring realm of the art world that existed in New York, London, Paris and Rome.

A family begins In 1934 Eleanor King became the bride of G. Lawrence Salley. The newlyweds lived in Tallahassee, Fla., where Eleanor continued to paint, participate in art shows, and teach art in her home studio. The couple had one child, daughter Jane, born in 1937.

Eleanor’s father-in-law was Dean of Florida State University. Upon the advice of some of the school’s art professors, she took her work to New York. Eleanor visited numerous galleries but none were interested in her art. Out of time and money, she made one last trip to Leonard Clayton’s Gallery. He admired her watercolors and offered to handle her paintings.

Eleanor returned to Florida ecstatic!

Several months later, though, this gallery closed.

Not willing to give up, Eleanor returned to New York. Again she went from gallery to gallery only to be refused, until she happened upon the Carrol Carstairs Gallery of French Art. Mr. Carstairs sent Eleanor to Phillip Riley at the Montross Gallery.

He specialized in American artists and agreed to feature Eleanor’s work in a one-woman show. That was in 1939 and the start of Eleanor King Salley’s New York exhibits.

Life takes a turn Several circumstances, however, prevented Eleanor from furthering her art career and continuing her exhibits. She was divorced from Lawrence Salley in 1940, and married Commander Robert Ernest Hookham in 1943. They had two children,

in the Beverly Art Center, Chicago.

Her large, sensational, watercolor The Saint Lawrence Seaway hangs in the permanent collection.

Through all these years Eleanor managed to successfully balance her personal art career with her deep commitment to community service right here in Elmhurst. She was the founder of the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild in 1946 and the Elmhurst Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation in 1974. Her dream and passion was always to house an Elmhurst Art Museum in a building of its own one day.

The ideal location for her museum would be Wilder Park, she thought.

But the Elmhurst Park District refused such an idea. (Eventually the Park District allowed two rooms in the Wagner Community Center to be used as an Art Museum in 1981, where it remained for the next fourteen years.) With Eleanor and Commander Hookham at the helm and continuing to raise money any way they could, the Art Guild began buying lots at Virginia Street and Cottage Hill Avenue during the 1950s. In the 1970s the Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation also began buying lots on Virginia Street. Eventually, through land purchases and arrangements between the Elmhurst Park District, the City of Elmhurst and the Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation, property was exchanged and a site at the north end of an expanded Wilder Park was dedicated to the construction of an art museum. On October 23, 1993 a ground-breaking ceremony was held in the park. In September of 1997, finally, the new Elmhurst Art Museum celebrated with a gala Grand Opening. We televised both events and I remember overhearing Eleanor exclaiming, “I can’t get over it! When I was planning it (the museum) for all these years, I never dreamed it could be so beautiful!” And it is also unique because a wing of the museum incorporates an architecturally significant Ludwig Meis van der Rho house. It had been purchased from past Elmhurst Mayor (1973-77) Raymond W. Fick, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann. Amazingly the entire glass house was slowly removed from its foundation and literally moved off its site at 299 Prospect Avenue to Wilder Park (witnessed by countless citizens, including Eleanor, our TV camera crew and me). This acquisition was a coup which truly makes the Elmhurst Art Museum world-class. For more than 40 years, Eleanor had never wavered in her determination and now her dream was a reality!

daughter Tarrant (b. 1944) and son Robert (b. 1947). The family moved to Elmhurst in 1946. Eleanor recalls, “When I married Commander Hookham, he said, ‘Well, Mama, you better stay out of the big galleries and raise the children and then we’ll pitch in and help you,’” she recalled.

Once the children were older, Eleanor taught art to adults and children continuously until 1983.

“I had 150 pupils a week in the basement of my home for years,” she said. “But these people have gone on to win prizes and be in juried shows, so I’m constantly reminded of the fun we had in my art classes.”

With the money she earned and her husband’s complete support, Eleanor rejuvenated her personal art career.

Her paintings were exhibited at the Stanley Johnson Gallery in Chicago.

In 1962 she returned to New York, where her paintings were exhibited at the Galerie Internationale. Through the efforts of the gallery’s director, Eleanor King Hookham was introduced to French Galleries where her work was admired and respected. Ultimately she presented 22 one-woman shows at the Galerie Marcel Bernheim in Paris. This was followed by eight more years of exhibition at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune. It wasn’t until 1992, after almost 30 years, that Eleanor finally retired from those annual Paris exhibits. programs to help publicize the proposed art museum. Pat Cheffer, who hosted several shows, had been an art student of Eleanor’s and introduced me to her. I admired Eleanor’s spunk, enthusiasm and ability to entertain listeners. During one great interview Pat remarked how Eleanor was known for the huge size of her paintings. Immediately Eleanor told this story: “I had four poster beds up in the bedrooms and the big posts are nine feet tall. And I often leaned big eight foot canvases against them for easels. One Easter I was painting where I had three or four great big canvases and there was wet paint.

And I suddenly remembered all my best clothes were in the closet way back in the corner and I couldn’t get to them! So I had to wear old clothes for Easter!”

During another interview, Eleanor revealed how her distinctive coffee and ink drawings initially were created when an infamous cup of coffee accidentally spilled on paper on her kitchen table. She liked the looks of the picture so much that she adapted the technique as part of her repertoire.

Whenever she was interviewed, Eleanor always talked about her dream. But she modestly would clarify for the viewing audience that she positively was not promoting her own art, but rather, the future of the Elmhurst Art Museum. Eleanor was adamant about this, despite the fact that she was probably enjoying the most exciting times of her career.

Known as El King, Eleanor has exhibited her work all over the world and many of her paintings are in permanent collections. Asked why she chose the name El King, Eleanor told me, “The art world seemed to be more of a man’s world. So I started signing El King so people wouldn’t know if I was a man or a woman.

Someone said, ‘Like El Greco?’ And I said ‘Yes, like El Greco!’”

Some of Eleanor’s art is famous for being big, bold, and daring. I remember seeing her watercolor triptych Sea and Rock hanging on the wall of the Council Chambers at the old Elmhurst City Hall on Schiller Street. Besides being beautiful, the three separate panels were huge (40”h x 60”w each). Another spectacular triptych Emerald Wave, just as large, is permanently housed at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, France. A large, unusual coffee and ink drawing, The Funeral, hangs in the permanent collection at the National Museum of Modern Art, George Pompidou Center also in Paris. Eleanor couldn’t possibly wear all

Local church gives back during pandemic For Elmhurst Presbyterian Church (EPC), making a positive impact in the community is part of its core mission. When the COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered how the church was able to interact with the organizations it supports, the congregation knew it was time to get creative.

Clothing Drive for DuPage PADS EPC is normally a host site for DuPage PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) on Saturday evenings from October to April. The site is currently closed while PADS houses clients seeking temporary shelter in hotels to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The need for resources for PADS clients remains, so EPC collected clothing and fulfilled clients’ wish lists for pants, coats, shirts and other wearables. Some church members separated donated clothing by size and type in the sanctuary. Other church members then pulled wish lists and “shopped” for clothing to create care packages that were later delivered to the requesters.

“This project was a great way for church members to safely come into the church and work with members of their families for a few hours so we can continue to support the important work that DuPage PADS makes possible,” said Rev. Traci Smith, pastor at EPC. ‘Fill the Stable’ for area organizations The church also invited the community to donate items to “Fill the Stable,” which was constructed outside an entrance for donation to the Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry (EYFP) and other Chicago-area organizations, including diapers, non-perishable food and toiletries.

“We are thrilled at the response for our ‘Fill the Stable’ initiative,” said Pam Fuesz, chair of EPC’s mission committee. “With the community’s help, we were able to deliver essential items like hand sanitizer, lip balm, toothpaste, laundry detergent, baby formula, diapers and food for people who need a helping hand during this difficult time.”

The mission-focused programs follow closely after EPC’s “Double Up Community Challenge” during the summer, which matched monetary donations for EYFP, DuPage PADS and the Elmhurst Walkin Assistance Network (EWAN). In total, EPC contributed $10,000 to the organizations.

St. Peter’s UCC collects for children housed at PADS In 2020, it would have been easy to dwell on what was lost as a result of the pandemic, but that was not the case for the congregation of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Elmhurst or the greater Elmhurst community. Instead, people looked to the manger for inspiration, as they remembered the child laid in a manger because he had no other shelter.

Elmhurst native takes 2nd in Hearst photojournalism competition Nate Swanson, a student at Ohio University, placed second in the Photojournalism Features and News Competition of the 2020-21 Hearst Journalism Awards Program. The winners in this first competition of the year were selected from 117 entries submitted from 65 universities nationwide.

Swanson, a photojournalism major from Elmhurst, received a $2,000 award and automatically qualifies for the 2021 Championship.

Once across, the crowd clashed again with the police, as seen in the picture when the moment was captured. It felt like a blur, how fast everything happened and escalated from one thing to another. I’ve covered numerous demonstrations in the city before, but nothing to the likes of this.”

Ohio University placed second overall in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition with the second highest accumulated student points from the first of two photo competitions held this year. The 61st annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program added photojournalism to the competitions in 1970 and now offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends.

The Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA) is seeking support in urging Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and state leaders to take a more pragmatic approach to Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic mitigations to allow for limited indoor dining that will protect the public health of patrons, while saving the livelihoods of restaurants and bars, and their employees.

The Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Governmental Affairs Committee is forwarding this information so that Elmhurst restaurant and bar owners (and other businesses) can voice their support for the IRA’s campaign via an online link that can be accessed via the ECCI web site at elmhurstchamber.org.

For more than two months, Gov. Pritzker has banned indoor food and beverage service at restaurants and bars in Region 8 (DuPage County) and every other region in Illinois citing concerns over the spread of COVID-19—a punishing restriction that has devastated the state’s hospitality community without the support of proven casetracing health department data.

“Given that restaurants and bars here in Elmhurst and across Illinois have made a conscious decision to violate the Governor’s mandate and provide indoor dining using the previous COVID-19 healthcare protocols is a clear demonstration of how desperate their situation is,” said John R. Quigley, ECCI’s president and CEO. Eating and drinking establishments across Illinois lost 31,000 jobs in November, the most of any state in the country and three times as many as the next closest state, according to data reported by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and National Restaurant Association.

Hospitality businesses across Illinois have been surviving the winter months by exhausting all remaining funds (both relief and reserve), laying off dedicated team members, and often closing up operations permanently.

John “Jack” Cashman, 89 John “Jack” Gibbon Cashman was born on Nov. 6, 1931 in Columbus, Neb. He passed away on Jan. 16, 2021 at the age of 89. He was an only child to LaVern and Hazel Cashman. LaVern worked in sales and traveled the country with Hazel and Jack eventually settling in Dallas, Texas. Jack went to high school. He received his BA in political Science at the University of North Texas in Denton, and his JD at the University of Texas in Austin. He was in the U.S. Army from 1956-58. On April 5, 1959 he married Peggy Ruth Matthews at the United Methodist Church of Pittsburg, Texas.

Jack began his career with Sears Roebuck and Company in the Dallas Law Department in 1962. He moved to the corporate office in Chicago in 1966 to become the Director of the Sears Acceptance Corporation. In 1972 he became General Counsel, Sears Midwest Territory and finished his career with Sears at the Sears Tower in Chicago as National Director of Government Affairs. After retiring in 1990, Jack served eight years on the Board of Review of the Illinois Department of Employment Security under Governor Jim Edgar.

Jack was a Director for the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, The American Retail Federation, Washington, D.C., as well as serving on the Bensenville Home Society Board. He was a Trustee at Elmhurst College for 16 years, serving three Presidents. Jack was named Trustee Emeritus upon retirement.

Jack and Peggy are members of St. Peters United Church of Christ. They were two of six founders of Elmhurst College and Community, a support group for the college. They also cochaired the first June Jazz festival in 1980, now an annual event called Elmhurst College Extravaganza. Jack was a tremendous fan and supporter of Doug Beach and the Elmhurst College Jazz Band.

He and Peggy shared a diverse group of interests and hobbies, loving travel, music, reading, writing, golf, tennis, tai-chi and yoga. They loved to explore Mexico and traveled to Switzerland, Italy and Paris. Another regular trip was to London where they made many new lifetime friends and enjoyed the sights and the theatre. Jack was also fond of visiting the pubs.

With a passion for working with young people, Jack worked with his son’s baseball teams, church youth groups and the Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and loved to camp and explore, especially in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming.

After moving to Park Place in 2012 Jack worked with the youth at Timothy Christian High School for many years.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Peggy, his wife of 61 years; his daughter Susan Cashman and his son John (Dee) Cashman and grandsons Mike, Kevin, Christopher and Matthew Cashman.

Jean Rohrhoff Kane, 95 Jean Rohrhoff Kane (nee Martin), passed away peacefully at home in Elmhurst on January 15, 2021 after 95 years of life. Jean was the beloved wife of the late Eugene W. Kane and the late Robert A. Rohrhoff; loving mother of Scott (Lena) Rohrhoff, the late Ann Jensen, Robert (Jan) Rohrhoff, James (Mary) Rohrhoff, and the late Thomas (Rachelle) Rohrhoff; fond stepmother of Mark (Debra) Kane, Michael (Jeanne) Kane, and Maribeth Kane DeLarco; proud grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of 12.

D205 to begin national search for new superintendent

After six years of service, Superintendent Dr. David Moyer has announced plans to leave Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 at the end of the 2020-21 school year. Dr. Moyer will further his career pursuits out of state.

His resignation is effective June 30.

“I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude for all of your efforts these past six years to transform District 205 into A National Leader in Future Ready Learning,” Dr. Moyer said. “I am so proud of all of you. During this time, we have accomplished many things together.”

“We respect Dr. Moyer’s decision to advance his career and wish him every success in his new endeavor,” D205 Board President Kara Caforio said. “At this time, we agree

that the focus and priority should be on finishing the 202021 school year strong. As board members, we will diligently begin the work of identifying the next leader for our school community.”

After securing the assistance of a search firm, the selection process, opportunities for community engagement and the projected timeline will be shared. An update will be provided at the next regularly scheduled Board meeting on January 26, 2021, if not before.

For the remainder of his time with D205, Dr. Moyer has committed to a smooth transition that includes the continuing return of all students to full-time, in-person learning as soon as safely possible.

EWAN receives $5,000 grant from DuPage Foundation The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) was pleased to receive a $5,000 grant from the DuPage Foundation Covid-19 Response Fund to help in its efforts to provide financial assistance to families in need.

While EWAN has been helping members of the Elmhurst community get through difficult times since 1997, this crisis has brought a level of need not seen before. Among the number of services provided, the majority of requests are for help paying rent and utility bills, It also provides clients vouchers to visit the Immaculate Conception Food Pantry

The DuPage Foundation received funding from the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund to re-grant to organizations dealing directly with the effects of the pandemic. This is the second grant EWAN has received from the Foundation since the crisis began.

She also was a loyal advocate for the Ray Graham Association.

Her favorite memories were spending family time at the River Forest Country Club and the Ocean Reef Club. While we all share a deep sorrow with the loss of our loving and devoted Dorothy, we take comfort in the memories we have of her and the lessons she taught us. Here’s what’s going on at District 205

The board allocated a total of minutes for in-person public comments. Each speaker was allowed to speak for up to three minutes.

Luke Malaga, a senior at York High School and a member of the Dukes’ football team, was the segment’s first speaker. Malaga referred to the recent suicide of a senior football player at Glenbrook North High School. Malaga stated that canceling sports is having a negative impact on high school students. He noted that several other states are currently allowing high school sports.

Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) have placed a pause on high school athletics during the current winter season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some sports that traditionally take place during the fall season, including football, are scheduled to be played during the spring season of the current school year. That season is tentatively scheduled to begin in February. The IHSA winter sports seasons, however, have not begun.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting, which was the board’s first meeting of the new year. The meeting took place one day after district students returned to a hybrid form of instruction that offered a blend of in-person and remote instruction. Nearly all of the district’s students had been receiving fully remote instruction since October 2020.

of high school athletes in Illinois. He urged the board and Moyer to fight to allow the state’s high school athletes to play their respective sports.

Parents speak out about in-person instruction Other speakers during the meeting’s public participation segment included parents of district students who urged the board to return to fully in-person instruction. One parent noted that there have not been any COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County among residents 19 and under.

The comments from parents also noted that public and private schools in the area are offering fully in-person instruction. The comments from parents also stated that the lack of in-person instruction has taken a negative toll on the mental health of students. One district parent who spoke stated that remote instruction hasn’t been effective for many children. Another speaker who urged the district to return to fully in-person instruction said that two days per week of in-person instruction (which each student receives in the hybrid model), with school days ending by 1 p.m., was unacceptable. That speaker also criticized Max Schoenberg, a York math teacher and the president of the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council, stating Schoenberg hides behind a Facebook page filled with self-serving propaganda, and does nothing but fight the return to in-person learning.

York principal talks about EOS The meeting also included a presentation from York Principal Shahe Bagdasarian about Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS), a Seattle-based organization. The mission of EOS is to ensure that low-income students and students of color have equitable access to academically intense high school programs. Bagdasarian told the board he highly supports the EOS program, which he utilized in his previous position as the principal of Glenbard East High School in Lombard. Bagdasarian told the board that some low-income students and students of color have never been encouraged to take an Advanced Placement (AP) course in high school. He said the EOS program helps schools gather information about their students. School administrators use that information to recruit students for various AP classes. Board members stated that they support the idea of the EOS program. Bagdasarian said York plans to start implementing the program during the 202122 school year.

Accounting firm offers presentation The meeting included a brief presentation about the district’s comprehensive annual financial report for the year ending June 30, 2020. Andrew Mace of Wipfli—the district’s accounting firm—gave the presentation online. The audio quality of Mace’s presentation was extremely poor. Mace said he was concerned that the Illinois state government could push its share of Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) back to the district. Mace said that as of June 30, 2020, the district’s proportionate share of the net OPEB liability was about $73.7 million. The state’s proportionate share of the net OPEB liability associated with the district was nearly $100 million.

Discussion continues about Spanish instruction The Jan. 12 meeting featured a recommendation from the district administration to permanently discontinue elementary Spanish instruction in grades 3-5. In the fall of 2020, the administration recommended suspending elementary Spanish because of staffing challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The board asked the administration to review the recommendation in January. In addition to recommending that elementary Spanish be eliminated for the remainder of the current school year, the administration recommended that Spanish instruction be eliminated at the elementary level, beginning with the 202122 school year. The recommendation will be an action item on the agenda for the upcoming board

meeting on Jan. 26.

According to the administration, the elementary Spanish enrichment program is not a prerequisite for middle-school Spanish, nor does it advance proficiency in the language in any meaningful way. Families interested in becoming bilingual have the opportunity to take part in the district’s two-way, dual-language Spanish immersion program.

Additionally, the district noted that there are state-required health standards. Those health standards used to be included in science standards. The district plans to adequately address its health standards at the elementary grade level and is interested in increasing the focus on social/ emotional learning standards in grades K-5. Under the district’s plans, time and resources would be reallocated from elementary Spanish to those two areas.

Board members indicated that while they support the discontinuation of elementary Spanish, they would like to have some option for children in grades 3-5 to experience enrichment in Spanish or another language.

Discussion of family survey Providing a brief COVID-19 update during the meeting, Moyer stated that the district is hoping vaccines for educators will be ready in about two weeks. Moyer also said that the district’s recent survey indicated that 24 percent of families were interested in taking part in voluntary testing. That figure is nowhere near the 60-percent threshold reportedly needed to warrant an effective testing program.

Board member Courtenae Trautmann noted that only 32 percent of the district’s families who were contacted for the survey responded at all.

She said that of the amount who responded, 76 percent supported mandatory testing. Trautmann, who said the support level of 24 percent was misleading, said she was disappointed by how few families responded. She said testing could help get the district back to fully in-person instruction.

Moyer noted that a non-response to the survey would default to an answer that a family was not interested in participating.

Board member Jim Collins asked if the district was working on getting more students into school buildings for in-person instruction before every faculty member has received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Moyer said that the district is looking at steps for expanding capacities in the buildings, but he wasn’t sure how that could be accomplished in the current situation. Trautmann suggested that the district compromise on the adherence to social distancing of at least six feet.

She added that the community believes school buildings are safe.

Board member Christopher Kocinski also stressed the importance of the district doing everything possible to get more students into school buildings for more in-person instruction. Collins urged the district to look at other nearby districts, as well as districts in other states, to see how they are able to offer more in-person instruction.

Purchase of The Abbey property approved Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to approve the purchase of The Abbey from the Elmhurst Park District, with a purchase price of $1.6 million. The building will serve as a permanent home for the district’s Transition Center, which serves students with disabilities between the ages of 19-21. The property is located at 407 W. St. Charles Road, just west of York High School. The Elmhurst Park District Board approved the sale at its meeting on Jan. 11. The building, which will also be used for other school purposes, will undergo renovations and should be ready for use by the school district in the fall of 2021.

Governor announces new COVID-19 mitigations update State has received 726,475 doses since vaccinations first launched

Area Chambers of Commerce have announced that, following a decrease in Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic test positivity rates and fewer hospitalizations throughout the state, on Friday, Jan. 15, Governor J.B. Pritzker announced that regions across the state are now eligible to move out of Tier 3 mitigations—the strictest tier of Illinois’ Resurgence Mitigation Plan—which was first implemented just before Thanksgiving.

After weeks of careful consultation with public health experts, the Governor announced that some regions could move out of the tiered resurgence mitigations (Tier 3, Tier 2, and Tier 1) and back into Phase 4 on a data-driven basis.

From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Illinois has followed the science and listened to public health experts to keep people safe, according to Restore Illinois.

After bending the curve in the spring, the state achieved relatively low rates of community spread and hospitalizations over the summer. But amid a nationwide surge, every region of Illinois saw an increase in cases and hospitalizations in the fall, which triggered the regional tiered mitigations outlined by the governor.

As the surge became more severe here in Illinois and across the nation, Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health moved all 11 regions into Tier 3 mitigations, effective Nov. 20, 2020. At the advice of public health experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the mitigations remained in place over the Anthony holidays Bucolo to prevent firesa a“surge pitch upon a surge.” game.

With some regions now begin-

ning to make progress, Pritzker announced that any region that has met the metrics for a reduction of mitigations will be able to move out of Tier 3 to less restrictive tiers, beginning Friday, Jan. 15.

As Region 8 (DuPage County) currently stands in Tier 3, the ban on indoor dining at restaurants and bars will remain in place. However, Region 8 is trending toward a move to Tier 2, possibly within days.

By operating with consistent and meaningful mitigations throughout the holiday season, Illinois has saved lives, brought down community risk, and prepared to safely reduce these mitigations. Pritzker said this approach has allowed the state to be in its strongest position to combat the virus since the pandemic began, as the administration prepares to proceed with Phase 1B of Illinois’ vaccine distribution plan.

Illinois also continues to build upon its nation-leading testing operation, surpassing more than 100,000 tests per day. This plan accounts for months of additional research as public health experts reach a greater scientific understanding of this virus.

In the updated Mitigation Tiers Structure, the biggest change occurs in Tier 1 which, when achieved by Region 8, will allow for limited indoor service at restaurants and bars serving food.

Youth and recreational sports may also resume play following the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) All Sports Policy in all regions moving out of Tier 3.

In the initial phases of the state’s plan, IDPH is partnering with large pharmacies to launch hundreds of new sites in communities across Illinois. Additionally, the Illinois National Guard (ILNG) will deploy two teams to two sites in Cook County.

IHSA provides update on status of high school sports Several state COVID-19 regions can resume practices after governor lowers mitigations; Basketball and football seasons called into question

The Illinois High School Association issued a pair of updates last week related to the status of high school sports in the state.

Late last week, Governor JB Pritzker announced three regions in the state (1, 2 and 5; or the Rockford and west area, Peoria area and southeastern Illinois areas of the state) are being rolled back from Tier 3 COVID-19 pandemic mitigations to Tier 2 status. In fact, the IDPH’s website now lists that Southeastern Illinois Region 5 as being all the way back to Tier 1.

That announcement allows further participation opportunities for IHSA schools located in those three regions.

On the same day last week, a Chicago newspaper story labeled “Pritzker’s latest announcement likely puts an end to hopes of a basketball season; football holds on by a thread,” sent shockwaves through the high school sports community.

Also earlier last week, the IHSA provided an update coming out of it regularly scheduled board of directors meeting with news that all sports not operating under an official IHSA season calendar may begin to conduct contact days as soon as they are allowable under state board of health mitigations and local school guidance, plus a warning that the association’s current COVID-19-adjusted calendar for the winter, spring and summer seasons likely will need adjusting, setting a Jan. 27 special board meeting date as the next likely update timeframe, but with the possibility of a sooner announcement on an adjusted calendar for the low-risk winter sports.

“We realize there is a desire for finality on a sports schedule for 2020-2021, however we did not believe it would be prudent to lock ourselves into a schedule at a time when IHSA schools are unable to conduct any sports,” the IHSA Board of Directors said in a joint statement. “Per Governor Pritzker, we have hope that low-risk sports may be permitted in certain regions of the state as early as Jan. 15 (Regions 1, 2 and 5). With that in mind, February seems like a realistic timeline to have sports resume statewide. We expect that the events of the next two weeks will go a long way toward informing our opinion on which scheduling option we decided to proceed with.

“We recognize that if no sports have resumed by February, season

lengths could be impacted in certain sports, and that we may need to take a longer look at the likelihood of true seasons being conducted in high-risk sports during the remainder of the school year calendar. Please know we see and read many of the comments and messages from student-athletes, coaches and parents, and that we are doing everything we can to try and bring IHSA sports back within the current parameters we are working in.”

After the IHSA’s second update was released, a Chicago Sun-Times sportswriter published an article that created a firestorm concerning the sports of basketball and football and the viability of those schedules being played in any fashion this school year. The article, written

by Michael O’Brien, references a document obtained from Pritzker’s office that still lists basketball, football, hockey and wrestling as highrisk sports and allows for a bestcase scenario of team scrimmages only and no games for those sports, even when their regions are rolled all the way back to Tier 1. In Tier 2, which is the next current rollback step for COVID-19 regions still in Tier 3, high-risk sports can only participate in non-contact training, according to the Sun-Times story.

The state has been mired in the current Tier 3 since November due to surging COVID-19 metrics.

Low-risk winter sports for schools in regions that lower to Tier 2 status can begin practice immediately and begin competition within their geographic COVID region on a future date to be determined by the IHSA board. High-risk winter sports in Tier 2 (boys basketball and girls basketball) can conduct team training with no physical contact.

Low-risk winter sports include badminton, boys swimming and diving, cheerleading, dance, boys and girls bowling and girls gymnastics.

Spring and summer sports for schools located in regions lowered to Tier 2 mitigations may begin to conduct contact days on Monday, Jan. 25. All contact days must be conducted under the rules of the Illinois Department of Public Health All Sports Policy based on their risk level. Weight training may be conducted in regions under Tier 2 mitigations as along as social distancing and masks are utilized.

The IHSA stressed all athletic activities remain on pause for schools located in regions that remain under Tier 3 mitigations.

“This is certainly positive news for three regions of the state, but

we still have a long way to go until we get all of our student-athletes back to being active,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said.

“High school student-athletes are hurting from a mental, physical and emotional standpoint, so we hope this is the first step toward getting that back to normalcy.”

The IHSA added the board is

scheduled to meet again on Jan. 27. Anderson said he anticipates the board will set competition start dates for low-risk winter sports prior to the Jan. 27 meeting. “We all need to continue to take the mitigations seriously,” Anderson said.

“Wear a mask. Socially distance.

We need to get these other regions to Tier 2 and cannot risk having oth-

ers backslide.”

The IHSA board directed IHSA staff to take feedback from last week’s meeting as well as any insights gained in the coming weeks, and bring forward viable scheduling options for that Jan. 27 special meeting.

All IHSA sports have been halted since Nov. 20.

Keeping it in the family

York senior Malaga headed to the Ivy League to play football at Cornell

York senior Luke Malaga’s college decision has some family history behind it.

Malaga, who recently signed a national letter of intent to play football at Ivy League member Cornell University, is following in the footsteps of his father.

“My dad played running back there in the 80s,” he said. “Him playing in the Ivy League set me on a course. I knew what to expect and I knew it was a good spot for me.

It’s a place that values academics and athletics. Since my freshman year I have always targeted the Ivy League. I had some attention from Brown and a little bit from Harvard, but Cornell wanted me the most. I like the coaching staff and the campus is great. That’s how it came to be.”

Malaga, a wide receiver, visited the school in Ithaca, New York (about 175 miles from New York City), in the fall of 2019. “The school is very beautiful. It’s the biggest Ivy League school, which I like. The campus is on a lake. It’s awesome. The football field has a lot of history. I have a good relationship with David Archer the coach.

The whole coaching staff is great.

The football program’s facilities are very nice. It’s been tough. I was supposed to visit this past spring, but COVID hit and it didn’t happen.

There is great history at Cornell and being at an Ivy League school…I’m fortunate to be in the spot I am in.”

Malaga is thrilled to be able to continue his football career at the next level. “It’s great,” he said. “It has always been my goal to play Division I football. I set the Ivy League as a goal and to achieve it, I’m very fortunate. It was the best fit. I am so happy to be there. There is no place I would rather be. I’m happy that I am playing at the next level, especially with what is going on right now.”

On the academic side, Malaga said he is going to study industrial and labor relations with a minor in business.

“That’s a business law-type of major and then my minor will be more specifically in business,” Malaga explained. “That’s one of the reasons Cornell intrigued me.

Cornell has very good alumni and a good sports business program ,which I want to go into. A lot of Cornell alumni work in sports.”

Malaga has a grade-point average of 4.4 at York, and continues to place a big emphasis on academics.

“I have always been a pretty good student and made sure I kept it up in high school,” he said. “Coach (Mike) Fitzgerald really is good about staying on us about grades and my parents have always been keen on it. I have seen it time and again. School gives you so much more in the way of opportunities. I have seen players with great talent not be able to play at the next level because their grades were not good.”

Malaga feels he gained an additional advantage by playing football at York. “York football has been great,” he said. “The great thing about it is, and I would tell this to young kids, York plays in a Class 8A conference with very good teams.

That’s extremely valuable. We’re going up against future Division I college players almost every week.

The West Suburban Conference is a known conference. Also, Coach Fitzgerald has been great here. I have had a great network of coaches by my side to help navigate the college process. Coach Fitzgerald has been great with the whole culture and atmosphere.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Malaga has used the down time to take his fitness to the next level.

“The biggest thing I have done is taken my strength to another level,” he said. “I have been running a lot and keeping my speed up. There have been some occasional receiv-

er trainings around the area, but it’s hard to do anything organized when it’s 20 degrees out. It’s been weird being cooped up like this. One benefit during this crazy, long offseason is I have been able to work on my game more than ever. I am itching for a chance to show that and come into my own. I miss being with my friends and teammates at York.

When we had those contact days in the fall, you realize how much fun it is. It’s so much fun. It’s not the games and the statistics that matter, it’s being with the guys and the relationships you have with the coaches.”

Malaga is hopeful some semblance of a senior football season will occur before the end of the school year. “I have had a really strong opinion on it,” he said. “I have been an advocate of us playing and have been at multiple rallies.

It’s big for the seniors and the juniors. I was a good player my junior year, but I have improved immensely. Myself and my teammates and other kids around the state deserve to play one more year. It’s not fair if these seniors don’t get to play one more time. And the juniors they need the film from their junior year for colleges. Junior year is always known at the year you really show off for coaches. I got recruited off junior-year film and from camp, but mostly film. If we don’t have a season this year, there is a whole grade of juniors who will suffer in the recruiting process and that will be a shame. We deserve a chance to show what we have.

“This is big. Every other state just about has played football and we can’t seem to figure it out in Illinois.

My dad eased my mind a little bit, telling me I have the opportunity to play four more years (at Cornell), but there is something to be said to see how good you can be at the high school level. I am optimistic that we will play, but we will see what happens.”

the medals, pins and ribbons which she has received from countries like Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Spain and Japan. Her Color Theory has been especially recognized by the French Government.

Honors and recognition Eleanor King Hookham has been honored by many organizations. In 1985 she was given an Honorary Doctorate of Arts Degree from Elmhurst College and chosen Outstanding Woman Leader in the Arts by the West Suburban YWCA. She was named Citizen of the Year by the Elmhurst American Legion for her dedicated service to the City of Elmhurst, and a Proclamation was issued by Mayor Charles Garrigues celebrating Eleanor King Hookham Day in Elmhurst on May 8, 1989. She was inducted into the Civic Hall of Fame by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce in 1993, and given the esteemed Sidney R. Yates Arts Advocacy Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation in 1995.

Eleanor is also quite proud of a lesser-known fact that she helped her friend Anna Emery Hanson establish the Hanson Center in Burr Ridge. It is an outstanding cultural arts center for people with developmental disabil-

ities.

“For four and one half years, I personally taught handicapped adults and children how to paint and draw. They especially liked to draw horses. I got the Center going good!”

She also is one of the founding members of The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. Eleanor King Hookham is listed in Who’s Who in America and Outstanding People of the 20th Century. She has authored two books, Creative Art and the Subconscious and Complete Color Theory.

Still a clear mind at 90 One night in November of 1999 I got a phone call from Eleanor. She was so excited because she was going to appear on a segment of Art Beat Chicago, a popular program on Chicago Public Television Channel 11. Eleanor wanted me to watch the show. We talked for a while when she unexpectedly exclaimed, “I have a new motto, Genie, my house may be cluttered - but my mind isn’t cluttered at age 90!” That was just like Eleanor - still energetic and optimistic. She once said: “I paint almost every day. If I come to the door and I’m all full of smiles you know I’ve been painting that day. I just love to paint!”
