The East Troy Brewery, Ivan’s on the Square, the East Troy Railroad, Gus’s Drive-In, LD’s BBQ and others are again serving customers.

The downtown Village Square and Village Square Park is the heart of the East Troy area and, sadly, this summer has been quiet, but that is changing as some of the outdoor events are coming back. See Page 17 for more information on upcoming events from the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce.

The East Troy Railroad Museum is open for train rides this season and they’re working on possibly adding farm-to-table

dinners closer to fall. See Page 21 to learn about their plans.

Another one of the area’s special places is Booth Lake Memorial Park, which jointly owned by the Village and Town of East Troy, and the Town of Troy. Operation of the park is governed by the Booth Lake Memorial Park board, consisting of two representatives from each municipality.

Use of the park is limited to the residents of the three communities, but the park and the beach are open.

It’s been a rough year so far and not just for the tri-Troy area, which includes the Village and Town of East Troy and the Town of Troy, but for the whole world.

The coronavirus pandemic and the months-long shut down of all but essential businesses this spring, created a difficult situation for everyone. But the community stepped up and supported the local restaurants through take out orders. The East Troy School District sent all the 1:1 devices home with the kids and continued classes. And the local governments even pulled off an election.

The word “community” resonates deeply this year in “Our Town.”

Brickbusters compete at state championship

The St. Peter’s Brickbusters competed in the 2019-20 FIRST Lego League annual challenge and made it to the state competition in early February at Waukesha South High School.

The team placed fourth overall at state and received an invite to the International Razorback Tournament in Fayetteville, Arkansas, but the competition was canceled because of the coronavirus.

The Brickbusters’ robot was named Lloyd, after famed Wisconsin architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The robot is built it with LEGO pieces specifically made

for robot construction. The robot had four motors and has several sensors for navigation, including gyro, light and color sensors.

The team also upped their game this past season, switching to a more advanced programming language called Robot C. The kids said they were able to do more with the robot with the new language and will be able to use the new skills they are learning in the “real world” and in their careers.

The team’s coach, Jason Feyen, said the Brickbusters have been working hard on their project this year and are excited for the state championships.

This year’s FLL theme is “City Shaper” and the team has taken it to heart, expanding their efforts beyond the competitions to a community-based project regarding the old Trent Tube site.

“Their project involved polling the residents in the Village and Town of East Troy to gather information and community input about the site and what they would like to see there,” Feyen said.

The village has been seeking community input for the future development of the site, which currently is a brown field. The village does not own the See BRICKBUSTERS, Page 6

site, but is considering taking ownership after the site is completely cleaned up.

While a large portion of the site cleanup has taken place, further cleanup efforts on the property will be dictated by what the village wants to use the property for.

When the Brickbusters found out about the site, they did some research and talked to East Troy Village Administrator Eileen Suhm to find out how they could help.

“They had a meeting (in August 2018) about this for the community, but only 23 people showed up,” eighth-grader Lilah Feyen said. “We were all interested in learning about the property and how we could help people understand what’s going on.”

The Brickbusters set upon a project to get the word out and gather information from community members on what they would like to see the property developed into.

“We don’t want this to be just our idea of what should go there, but the community’s,” sixth-grader Adam

The team also worked hard to inform the community about the facts concerning the site and future development. They have presented their project to the Village Board, the Knights of Columbus and other organizations, seeking input.

“We talked to Eileen Suhm, the village administrator, and she said there are a lot of misconceptions in the community about what’s going on,” Lilah Feyen said.

“It’s contaminated, but a lot of the cleanup has already been done, so it’s not as bad as people think it is,” sixth-grader Dylan Matuszak said.

The team wrote a skit they perform as part of their competitions in the FLL season, which depicts some of the community’s misconceptions about the old Trent Tube site and their efforts to help out. The team members felt the project was a good fit for the FLL City Shaper theme this year.

“This really connects us with our community and we can have a real impact

on it,” seventh-grader Jonah Feyen said.

“We went through a lot of ideas, but this one really seemed like it was perfect,” seventh-grader Kaitlyn Sween said.

The Brickbusters spend a lot of time in the community on different projects and helping out. Charity has been a part of the team’s makeup from the start.

Over the years they have worked with the village and Department of Transportation to provide safer crosswalks, started a milk-carton recycling program and worked with the residents at The Heritage. They have also made Christmas cards for veterans, made blankets, collected shoes, welcomed home an Honor Flight, and mentored other area robotics teams.

“Being part of FLL is more than just going to competitions,” Lilah Feyen said.

“It’s about helping everyone be the best they can be so the competitions can be the best they can be.”

East Troy grad signs to play Major League Baseball

think, it all started on a quiet, unassuming baseball diamond in small-town America, next to East Troy High School.

Imagine growing up watching your favorite team, the Milwaukee Brewers, as Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun smash majestic home runs at Miller Park, and thinking, “That’s going to be me someday.”

For Mukwonago native and 2020 East Troy High School graduate A.J. Vukovich, someday is now.

The tall, built 6-foot-4 baseball and basketball star, the reigning Southern Lakes Newspapers All-Area Basketball player of the year, isn’t attending school this fall at Louisville University, his original plan back in 2016.

Instead, Vukovich, a slugging

outfielder/corner infielder signed a Major League Baseball contract for $1.25 million to play professionally with the Arizona Diamondbacks July 2, and his dreams of playing baseball at Miller Park one day are that much closer to reality.

On Friday, July 3, Vukovich saddled up his wooden bat, batting tee, two batting gloves and his batting practice pitcher Dan Douglas, a former East Troy Trojan star, and smashed baseballs over the fence and onto skate park wooden ramps, with a natural, sweet stroke.

Is he excited to be a professional baseball player?

“I’m officially a part of Arizona’s organization,” said Vukovich, who was drafted 119th by the Diamondbacks. “It was a very tough decision (to sign). I knew I had a great home with Louisville.

At the end of the day, it came down to a family decision. This is what I thought would make me a better player.”

“It’s been a cool journey for me. I’ve been playing all over the country since

I was a freshman – Florida, Georgia, California. Growing up, it was always a goal of mine to play professional baseball. I kind of knew as a freshman and sophomore that I had the talent to maybe get drafted, so I went full-steam ahead.”

A kid from Mukwonago

Living in Mukwonago, Vukovich made the 10-minute drive down Interstate-43 to East Troy as a kid, where he got hooked to the youth basketball program.

It yielded a trip to the WIAA state tournament as a sophomore in 2018, and led to a career with more than 2,000 points, a school record.

Vukovich earned first team all-state honors for Division 2 in 2020.

“Working with Coach Randy Jones,” Vukovich said. “I grew in love with the basketball tradition over here. When I was a freshman, I realized I could maybe go farther in baseball.”

But he also loved baseball, and his parents got him into the Hitters Baseball Academy in Caledonia, near Racine, at an early age.

With travel tournaments around the region and country, Vukovich was discovered by a Louisville scout at a Florida baseball tournament when he was a freshman, at only 14 years old.

His raw power and home-run hitting ability, combined with natural athleticism to track down any ball in the outfield and jump to take away extra-base hits was enticing.

So Vukovich signed with Louisville four years ago.

He didn’t play one single inning for East Troy High School, but instead worked hard to hone his skills with Hitters, which provided year-round baseball, outdoor and indoor, and as many as 80 games per year.

With a sister that played basketball at Carthage College and parents who played multiple sports, picking up a ball, throwing and catching have always been staples of the Vukovich household.

“We’re always watching Brewers, Bucks, Badgers, and there’s just a love for sports and the game of baseball,” Vukovich said. “Playing year-round has helped me get ready for professional baseball. I’ve been playing two years up. So I’ve played with Gavin Lux (Kenosha) and Jared Kenelic (Waukesha) and lots of good players.”

Lux is starring for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Kenelic plays AA baseball for the Seattle Mariners.

Vukovich says basketball helps him with his athleticism and outfield skills in baseball.

He envisions playing outfield for the Diamondbacks, but he will have to wait until Coronavirus passes.

While quarantined at home from high school, Vukovich had a good schedule, he said. He would go to Hitters every other morning, and would lift every day he wasn’t playing. For awhile, he was doing some live hitting with Lux. Furthermore, he batted against current Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Lindbloom.

Vukovich says there is still tons of work to do, as he needs to find his natural position. He believes it will be in the outfield.

“I don’t want to be known as a guy that can only hit home runs,” Vukovich said. “I can hit for power to all fields.”

He hopes that in two to three years, he can make it up to the Dance, as they call it.

And if he ever wants to attend Louisville, the Diamondbacks will pay for his

She added that the district’s food service staff has been helping with the deliveries, “They’ve been just amazing.”

While Kim still does the shopping for the bags, one local business is also collecting non-perishable food items for the Battle Bags. East Troy Lumber is a collection point for donations to the program.

“Steve (Lambrechts) has been amazing,” Kim said. “When we decided to continue the program with the schools shut done we didn’t know how it would work. How would we get donations? What will that look like? Steve, who is a School Board member, stepped up right away and said people could drop stuff off by him.

“He just notifies me and says ‘I have food for you’ and I just go and pick it up,

it’s great, I just come and pick them up and the load them into my car it’s an amazing process!”

With the COVID-19 situation, the program is now using “Battle Boxes” because they are easier to store and donate, Kim said.

While the high school students can’t participate in the program at the moment, Kim said they are never far from her mind when she’s packing the boxes.

“We truly live in an amazing community and the kids who helped create this program are a testament to that,” she said. “This definitely wouldn’t have taken off without the kids and their passion for helping others.”

Switching gears Chamber innovates to stay connected

When the coronavirus shutdown happened in March, summer seemed far off and many believed by now things would be “back to normal.”

For the area chambers of commerce, the March shutdown created a situation where information needed to be shared quickly with local business owners.

In East Troy, the downtown Historic Village Square has been quiet as the Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebrations were canceled along with the village’s largest annual event, the East Troy Cycling Classic, which is part of the Tour of America’s Dairyland bike race.

The loss of the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce’s Memorial Day Weekend event and the Cycling Classic have hit the chamber hard.

“In the past five years, we’ve witnessed East Troy transform into one of the coolest places in Southeastern Wisconsin, but the global coronavirus pandemic put the brakes on an economy that has been growing steadily,” East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vanessa Lenz said. “The loss of our summer events is devastating, but East Troy has the advantage of being

Lenz said the chambers “tourism arm” has shifted its marketing focus on things people can do and looking for smart, innovative ways to get people to spend their money locally to resuscitate the sector, while continuing to serve as the hub of information and support for its small business members, residents and visitors.

The East Troy Chamber is looking toward fall to get back in the swing of things, but Lenz said the line up of events is not set at the moment.

“Our fall event schedule will follow the industry themes of local, slow and safe,” she said. “We will closely follow best practices and suggested guidelines to mitigate risk (following guidelines set by the CDC and Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation).

“We are hoping to salvage the last few weeks of summer but will be monitoring things closely and will be making cancellations if necessary,” Lenz said. “Our industry is suffering and some are teetering on the edge in a season that is strongest from mid-May to the end of October. At the same time, if infections spike that’s the worst possible thing that could happen to our economy.”

New at the market With the COVID-19 restriction, the East Troy Chamber’s Farmers Market took on a new look and new place in the community, Lenz said.

“Since our farmers market was set to open while Gov. Tony Evers’ stay-at-home order’s restrictions were in effect, we made the shift to an online East Troy Market with a launch date of May 8,” Lenz explained.

The lockdown also brought a realization that the chamber could help people struggling to find local sources for food.

“This crisis has really magnified something we’ve known for a long time – consumers want local food. We had to figure out a way to get it to them safely while making sure we have a market for years to come. Our market accomplishes both goals, letting you support farmers, artisans and businesses you know and delight in

Fly like an eagle Local teen receives highest Boy Scout rank at 15

For many Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout is the crowning achievement to their scouting career. Because of the rigorous requirements, the majority of scouts who reach the rank of Eagle do so when they are around 17 to 18 years old.

There are, of course, many exceptions to this, and one of them lives in East Troy and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 92. Connor LaFreniere, a sophomore at East Troy High School, was 15 years old when he received the Eagle Scout rank with the Boy Scouts of America Aug. 25, 2019.

LaFreniere was honored an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony Nov. 3, 2019, at Edwards YMCA Camp and Retreat Center in East Troy.

Local and state officials attended the ceremony, including state Sen. Steve Nass, Town of East Troy Police Chief Don Jensen and Town Chairman Joseph Klarkowski.

Nass presented LaFreniere with a Senate Citation and Jensen and Klarkowski presented the scout with and Award of Accomplishment.

• Boy Scout rank worked extremely hard during his scouting career to achieve this rank by completing his project at 14 years of age.

“During his time in Boy Scouts, he has earned 36 merit badges, Order of the Arrow, Brotherhood, and bronze, gold, and silver palms. I can’t begin to tell you about all the campouts, hours of community service, and the mentoring of younger scouts in which he has participated.”

During the same time, his mother said Connor maintained a 3.92 GPA, was on the homecoming court as a freshman and was a member of the FIRST Robotics Competition Team 930, which took second place at the world competition in April.

For Connor, all those accomplishments are just part of what makes a good scout, which began when he joined the Tiger Scouts at the age of 6.

“As a scout you learn many things, not just the typical outdoor stuff like Merit Badges and awards,” he said. “In scouts we’re always working in the community, we help out at events, our troop has an Adopt A Highway and we’re just always lending a hand where we can.”

Being a scout also helped Connor develop his personal interests.

“Through scouts I was able to get into science and robotics more and earn awards through science-based activities, which

really interested me,” he said.

Eagle Scout project When it came time to organize and execute his Eagle Scout project, Connor said he spent a few months considering where he could do the most good.

“When I was looking for a project to do, one of the first places I visited was Mt. Olive Church (Mukwonago),” he said.

“My family has gone there for many years and they showed me around their barn and talked about what they wanted to do and that’s when I decided that’s what I wanted to do.”

The project for the church consisted of building a concrete ramp as an approach to the entrance of the barn for large machinery, Connor said.

“I also installed some workbenches to help with storage of the tools they had,” Connor said.

“As a parent you’re always proud when they do something like this,” Katherine said. “He researched a few ideas, trying to be through and picked a project he thought would be most meaningful thing to him.”

As with all Eagle Scout projects, a lot of time is spent planning and documenting what the scout is doing. Connor starting planning his project in the fall/winter of 2018 and built the ramp and workbenches

this summer.

“I had a mentor, who my family has known for years, who is an expert on concrete; he’s a contractor,” Connor said. “He had a lot of information about concrete and helped me get the truck there and make the pouring of the approach go smoothly.”

Connor said the whole experience was a learning opportunity that he enjoyed.

“Both in documentation and writing proposals as well as in leadership, it taught me a lot,” he said.

Leadership is something Connor has been part of with Troop 92 for a while now. He was a patrol leader in the past and this year will be an assistant senior patrol leader.

“I opted out to let other boys be a patrol leader this year,” he said. “I did take the assistant leader role and will help out the youth leader in the troop and lead meetings if he’s not present.”

As Connor looks toward the future, he sees himself in the science/engineering field, but he has some time to figure out just what he wants to do. For now, he’s enjoying his scouting activities and been a teenager.

“I have quite a few options, I just need to decide what career option I want to take.”

Take a trip to the past East Troy Railroad operates the last remnant of the interurban rail system

Although a popular attraction in the area, many still don’t know that the East Troy Railroad Museum runs the last remaining segment of the old Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light interurban rail system, offering trolley and interurban railroad cars rides each weekend.

The rail line between East Troy and Mukwonago was once part of more than 200 miles of track in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Today, the 14-mile of track used by the railroad operates every weekend Memorial Day weekend through September.

The East Troy Railroad Museum is a nonprofit organization, which is run by more than 100 volunteers and features historical railway cars that have been lovingly restored.

“We are restoring North Shore Care 761 right now and there is a lot of energy and excitement about getting it operational,” museum President Ryan Jonas said. “It’s totally stripped now and ready to paint and it’s looks like we’ll have it done by the end of the year.”

Jonas said the former owner of the railroad, Paul Averdung, has been volunteering at the museum to be part of the project.

“He ran the railroad for more than 30 years and he came back just for this, he has a real passion for it. He told me ‘I love coming out here and working and not having to deal with the administration of the railroad.’ I guess that’s what I’m for,” Jonas said with a laugh.

Changes this year The railroad is celebrating its 113th year in 2020, but with the coronavirus pandemic, operations have seen some change.

“Like everyone, we’ve had to do things differently to protect our volunteers and our guests,” railroad Operations Manager Jim Feyerherm said. “The No. 1 change is we’re requiring masks. Masks for the train crews and masks for everyone who comes in.”

In addition to the required masks, the railroad now requires reservations and contactless payment from its passengers.

“We’re trying to have all reserved seating and we’re encouraging people to go to our website or go on Facebook to get to our

websites and make their reservations and payments. We also have a QR code at the depot people can use with their phone, but we’re not selling tickets inside the depot.”

This year, the trains are only departing and arriving at the East Troy Depot, 2002 Church St. “We’re not taking on passengers at the Elegant Farmer or Indian Head Park in Mukwonago this year,” Feyerherm said.

“The trains still stop at the Elegant Farmer for people to shop, but we don’t take on new passengers there.”

While passengers may leave the train to shop at the Elegant Farmer, they must take the same train back to the depot, which is another change. Eating is also not allowed on the trains, Jonas said.

As with many of the social distancing guidelines, Jonas said there has been some pushback, but for the most part, people have been good about considering the safety of the railroad volunteers and other passengers.

“But we do get some who just don’t care,” he said.

Crossing concerns Another big concern at the railroad this year is the problems being caused by distracted drivers not stopping at the railroad crossings.

“I have never seen it so bad as it is this

year,” Feyerherm said. “All of our operators, myself included, have seen a tremendous amount of near misses with cars this year. I don’t know if people are just so preoccupied they’re not paying attention or if everyone is just in such a rush, but it’s happening every day we’re running, sometimes more than once.”

Most of the crossings are in the East Troy area and the crossing on Highway 20 has lights, but people are still not stopping, Feyerherm said.

“The lights come on and people run right through them. It’s really scary. We’re taking 30 tons down the road and while a crash would kind of damage our cars, it’s going to destroy whomever it hits. We’re going slow, so I don’t think it would cause serious injury, but it will cause serous damage to a vehicle.”

Feyerherm said people need to be aware of their surroundings when driving in the East Troy/Mukwonago area near the train tracks. Some of the crossings have stop signs and others have yield signs, but Feyerherm said they are all controlled in some way and he can’t figure out what people are thinking by ignoring the warnings.

“Always expect a train when you see any railroad crossings,” he said. “I’m serious.

Dinner trains on hold One of the East Troy Railroad’s most popular attraction is the dinner trains and this year, with COVID-19, the railroad is rethinking how to hold those.

“We were doing them with people eating at the depot and then taking a train ride, but it wasn’t attracting a lot of people, so we’re in the process of revamping how we’re going to do them,” Jonas said.

The hope is to hold a some farm-to-table type dinners, with locally sources ingredients, and have the train ride after.

“We’ll probably have them more toward the fall,” Feyerherm said. “Maybe in the car barn or put a tent up if people are interested.

We’re working on it.”

For now, the railroad is operating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with trains departing the East Troy Depot at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Friday and Sunday and 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“We either use open cars or cars with the windows open, depending on the weather,” Feyerherm said. “Come and ride the train and support the railroad, we’re open and it’s a fun way to spend the day.”
