Luca Lopez, who earned 12th at state, says teammates ‘are amazing’ By Kevin Cunningham CORRESPONDENT
By the age of nine, Delavan-Darien High School’s Luca Lopez was already swimming competitively. Fast forward nearly a decade – including a move from New Mexico to Wisconsin – and his final competitive race has now come to a close. The WIAA State boys swimming Division 2 Championships took place Feb. 15. Lopez was in the same spot a season ago as he qualified for the state meet as a junior in the 200-yard IM and finished in 13th-place with a time of 2:07.81. That Friday, Lopez knew it was going to be the final race of his competitive career and just over two minutes after the highly-anticipated race began, it came to an end. He finished in 12th place with a time of 2:04.86. “To be honest, it was one of the strangest races of my life,” Lopez said. “Just because I’ve been training in swimming for nine years now. That was my last race. There were a lot of nerves and a lot of emotions I’ve never felt. “Once they called me on the block, I tried to get all that mentality out of my head and clear my mind. But, once I started swimming, the emotions and memories of me swimming when I was younger for different teams and coaches, it all came back to me. I think it drained me,” he said. “It drained me emotionally and physically. I got tired quickly. I kept pushing, but I couldn’t really put it in the water,” he added. Lopez did increase his state time and final placing from a season ago, but Comets head coach Matt Palma said he knew Lopez wanted to do better and finish higher. Ultimately, Lopez improved however, it wasn’t exactly what he was hoping for. Lopez’s goal at the beginning of the season was to make it to state again and finish under the two-minute mark. Earlier this season, he swam a 2:01.31, which was his personal best for his time as a Comet. “My ultimate goal was to win my conference and section and possibly get a team record,” Lopez said. “At the beginning of the season, it was just breaking two minutes, which, I didn’t do, sadly. But, making it to state and breaking two minutes. Last year, that was the end goal – just making state. I was able to cut time like crazy. “This year, just placing higher at state was my biggest goal. I had the mentality the week before that I saw I had a small chance at winning state or cutting a lot of time like I had the year before.” Had Lopez swam his best time yet again at state, he would have placed sixth overall. By placing sixth, he would have finished on the podium, which was another goal of his.
Big transition Competitive swimming in Wisconsin is different than it is in other states. Take New Mexico, where Lopez is from, for example. “I didn’t move to Wisconsin until my sophomore year,” he said. “I’ve been swimming competitively since I was 9-years-old. The transition was pretty

crazy. New Mexico wasn’t as competitive at the time. I kind of had my place on my team. The school I swam for was a school of 2,000 or 3,000 I think. It was a lot different. “Transitioning to Wisconsin, swimming was way harder. I went to state my freshman year in relay and in one individual event. But, it wasn’t that hard to get to state in New Mexico.” Much earlier on in New Mexico, Lopez said, he initially began swimming by the age of 3. He called the swimming pool his sanctuary as a kid and initially, when it came to swimming competitively, he qualified for the state club meet in just his third ever meet.
‘Amazing’ teammates The transition from New Mexico to Wisconsin, as Lopez described, may have been difficult but even during his sophomore year he said teammates would chant “sub-two” pushing him to hit that goal in the 200-yard IM. Palma talked about how at DelavanDarien High School, Lopez didn’t necessarily have a training partner to push him like some of the other top swimmers in his event had. Palma said that can certainly help the top swimmers. “Luca didn’t have that,” Palma said. “That goes to show his character and how he works hard even though nobody else pushed him. He pushed himself. It was him alone, so to say, pushing himself as hard as he could.” Palma said Lopez’ time was consistently around 2:09 most of the year. “Then he dropped down all the way close to two minutes. So, that was great. He’s also very versatile. He showed his leadership, too. I’m really proud of him.” Palma said. While another incredibly fast 200-yard
IM swimmer may have helped Lopez get better and potentially hit some of his ultimate goals, he said he wouldn’t have it any other way than how it played out. “I love my teammates,” he said. “My teammates are amazing. They’re so supportive. I’m definitely at a higher level than them just because I’ve been swimming year-round forever now. That’s just what happens. “I feel like practices could have been harder. But, I wanted to be with my teammates. It’s a swim team at the end of the day. I would do it again – have easier practices if it meant I could be with my team.” The sport of swimming is a good fit for anybody competitive as the chance to always get better and swim faster is always there. That’s also what can make the sport so addictive. However, it wasn’t just the competitiveness that helped fuel Lopez. It was about more than just winning. “Swimming is an extremely underrated sport. Some people at my school don’t even consider it a sport sometimes. The benefits of swimming… I have ADHD and dyslexia. Swimming helps me overcome that. There are a lot of beneficial factors in swimming. It engages your mind and body to work together,” he said. “It can help learning disabilities or attention disabilities like ADHD. Swimming isn’t just moving through water really quickly. It’s a mental thing. I would say to try new things and get involved,” Lopez added. He said he knew when he was younger he had behavioral issues and wasn’t able to focus in school. “I constantly wanted to do things. My mind was moving all over the place. I didn’t know how to control my body kind of… I don’t know how to explain that
(but) ADHD took over what I was doing. Until I tried swimming, it was that first connection of getting my mind and body to work together. It’s definitely a mental sport and that mental side of it helps you in everyday life,” Lopez explained.
Life beyond swimming
Because Lopez is as exceptional as he is at swimming, he could do it at the next level in college. Palma said he has pushed Lopez to give it a try but Lopez decided against pursuing that. “The main reason is the workload in college. I want to be a mechanical engineer and the amount of homework, practicing three times a day – the morning, afternoon and night, and working. If I did get a scholarship in swimming, I would do it. I still love swimming and I still want to be involved because it’s helped me so much over the years,” he said. In recalling the end of his competitive career, Lopez can say he made it to backto-back state competitions and improved from one year to the next. The goal of clocking his event in under two minutes may not have been accomplished, but there was one moment in his senior season of high school that will always stand out. “Winning my sectional and winning the 200 IM. Seeing the time of 2:01 and being so close to something, I could taste it. Just seeing my friends at the other side of the pool freaking out, my friends on other teams I’ve met through club freaking out and seeing my mom cry – all of that. That was nothing but pure joy,” he said. “When I look back (on) if my season was a success or not, I can always look back to that. That made it all worth it. Just that one race right there made all nine years of swimming worth it,” Lopez said. “That’s the first time I felt like I was truly successful in swimming.”
