McGMO raises nearly $100,000 GOLF OUTING TO FIGHT CANCER MARKS 20 YEARS

The 20th annual McGMO golf tournament drew a record 198 participants and raised nearly $100,000 toward the fight against cancer at Delbrook Golf Couse in Delavan on July 30.

Mike Grover, one of the founders of the McGMO, said the original goal of the event was to provide quality cancer care close to home. The McGMO was established in 1998 in memory of Dean McGregor, Ivan Grover and Calvin Monroe, who lost battles with cancer, and Kim O’Keefe, a cancer survivor.

Grover said golfers from all over the Midwest and as far away as Oklahoma, Colorado, New Jersey, Florida and California made the trek to Delavan to help support a good cause. He said many of the people who participate from so far away do so because they are friends with whom the founders grew up, went to college or worked over the years.

Great weather, course The weather and the great condition of Delbrook helped make the event successful, Grover said.

“The golf course has never looked

better,” he said.

Grover said the staff went way out of their way to make that happen after all the recent rain the course endured.

“Dan (Piecha) and his staff make having an event as large as the McGMO successful because they are organized and hard working,” Grover said. “They go out of their way to make it easy for us.”

Grover said Greenie’s has the best food in the area for golf outings and always strives to make each year’s event better than the last with top-notch food and service.

Before heading out on the course, golfers were treated to a lunch of beef brisket and pulled pork. Dinner that included beef tenderloin and teriyaki chicken followed.

“With the weather, golf, and food, it could not have been any better,” Grover said.

Money raised Grover, his wife, Lori, his sister Vicky Roach, his grandmother, John and Robin Monroe, Tim and Kehau McGregor, Kim O’Keefe and 40 volunteers from Aurora Health System and the community organized and ran the event. The event

raised a little over $64,000 and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation matched every dollar with 50 cents, bringing the total raised to nearly $100,000.

In addition to the golf, money was raised with an auction that saw a fivenight Hawaiian vacation sell for $3,400,

a California wine vacation sell for $2,800 and a hand-made quilt made by Grover’s grandmother sell for $1,500.

This was the third year of a three-year commitment by the McGMO to raise

“It is a state-of-the-art treatment facility that emphasizes patient comfort, which has been our mission,” Grover said.

“Cancer affects us all,” he said. “We have a passion for making cancer care in our community a little easier on the patient.”

Grover said each of the families who founded the event did so because they each lost a father within six months of each other to cancer. He said the group’s passion for the cause has not waned a bit, and the people who work so hard to make it happen make the event great each year.

“Every year we unfortunately lose more of our friends or McGMO family to cancer,” Grover said. “We look at this event as family and everyone helps to make it a success.”

Grover said each year more than 90 percent of the participants have played in the event before adding to the family atmosphere.

“It really has become like a family with a common goal to fight cancer and do something for our community,” he said.

While there’s nothing wrong with the garden staples – they’re pretty and easy to care for – Renowden encourages gardeners to use plants that benefit pollenators.

To show gardeners how to do that – and let them see the plants in a real-life setting – Renowden hosted The Premier Pollinator’s Pallette Garden Tour on Aug. 5.

“So that people can see all these plants in a setting rather than pictures in a book,” Renowden said about the tour, which will feature her own Delmar lot, the Delmar beach and another home on South Shore Drive where she maintains plants.

Renowden, a retired nurse, has been gardening for years but began growing native plants in earnest in 1997 while living in Madison. She said the city was encouraging gardeners to use native plants, and Renowden wanted to show people the planting could be done on a standard-size city lot.

Her roughly 50 by 150 foot lot in Delmar has more than 125 species of native plants including multiple varieties of asters and six kinds of cone flowers.

“Native” means the plants originated in the United States, many from this area, Renowden said. They have the proper

nectar that bees, butterflies and other insects need to pollinate crops and other plants, she said.

The most important pollinators, Renowden said, are bees, butterflies, moths and hundreds of types of little beneficial wasps.

The pollinators love hyssop, which bears purple flowers, and Renowden expects to have a cluster of plants at the entrance of her garden abuzz with bumble bees at the time of the tour. Bumble bees won’t sting, she said. True pests, Renowden said, are Japanese beetles, which will decimate plants. She kills them by the thousands.

Many so-called native plants have been hybridized and don’t have the nectar bees need.

“It doesn’t have the same value to pollinators,” she said.

When shopping for plants, if a name is in quotation marks after the name of the so-called native plant such as “magnus” or “Cindy Sue,” it’s a hybrid and won’t have the same pollination value as the real thing, Renowden said.

Gardeners should look for the botanical name and shop at known greenhouses that carry native plants, she said. Three native plant merchandisers are Prairie Nursery in Westfield north of Portage, Prairie Moon in Minnesota and Agrecol Native Nursery based in Evansville.

Area greenhouses that carry native plants might spray the flowers with neonicotinoids – insecticides that are toxic to bees. The products, which are chemically similar to nicotine, have been banned in Europe, she said. Jurg’s

Greenhouse in Walworth does not use the chemicals, she said.

Renowden started her garden six years ago on a sparse, weed-ridden lot. The time commitment in developing the garden has been “pretty much my life.”

Renowden can be spotted pulling garlic mustard, which she said “takes over everything” and poisons the soil so that nothing else can grow, along public rights of way.

“It’s kind of a compulsion, I guess,” she said.

Renowden said it has also been a learning process along the way.

“I know how to do it easier now,” she said.

In the fertile, mulched garden soil, many plants will grow larger than they do in their native environment, she said.

Some become bullies and crowd others out.

Her garden includes a native groundcover – a nice native alternative to pachysandra, she said – that blooms the first beautiful, yellow flowers of the spring for pollinators. Milkweed and yellow flowers throughout the garden attract butterflies, and a plant with an upsidedown cup-like flower provides a place that bees like to hide, Renowden said.

Different varieties of plants with trumpetlike flowers attract hummingbirds, and the garden has herbs and plants beneficial to people too.

A berry that is “everywhere in Europe” because of its health benefits – it has three times the antioxidants of blueberries – grows there as well as New Jersey Tea, apple trees, herbs for hot flashes, a

Chinese ginseng-type plant (not native to the United States) for anxiety and Indian boneset used by native Americans to treat broken bones.

Hazel nuts, Joe Pye weed, trillium, wild impatiens, native sunflowers, the native plant that petunias were born from, a vine that attracts Swallowtail butterflies and 13 kinds of shrubs also adorn the garden.

Renowden, who has multiple certifications as a native gardener including endorsement from the National Wildlife Federation, said gardeners are welcome to their lilies and hostas. But, she encourages them to aim for a 50-50 mix of the traditional plants with native varieties that have value “for the creatures.”

Orange day lilies, which can be seen in ditches throughout the county, have been named an invasive species in Wisconsin.

Renowden distributed brochures, pamphlets and catalogs at her early August event and gave away plants. The tour was free but Renowden asked for donations to the Xerces Society and the Pollinator Partnership.

The Xerces Society is a non-profit environmental organization that focuses on the conservation of invertebrates considered to be essential to biological diversity and ecosystem health, according to Wikipedia. The name is in honor of the extinct California butterfly, the Xerces blue.

The Pollinator Partnership is a four-star rated international charity organization that educates people about the need for pollinators to grow crops such as tomatoes, green beans and peas, Renowden said.

The 16th annual Scarecrow Fest will be Saturday, Sept. 16. The all-day event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Delavan and includes family friendly activities along with a flea market and craft fair in Water Town Park.

Community members are encouraged to participate by either building a scarecrow and bringing it to the festival or building one right onsite. Scarecrows are displayed on the street posts throughout The Delavan Darien High School Gridiron Club will sell brats, hot dogs, chips and beverages from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., plus there will be free pumpkin painting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual Pie and Cake Auction begins at 3 p.m.

Activities at the South Corner of Second and Walworth include “Build-A-Scarecrow and Take it Home” for $10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Great Delavan Duck Raffle at 2:30 p.m. Raffle tickets are $2, or three for $5 and be purchased at many downtown businesses, including Bradley’s Department Store, Lauren’s Antique and Art Centre, Lubick Gallery, Del-Mart, Remember When, and more. First place is $200, second place is $100, third place is $50.

The Phoenix Park Bandshell will host live music with Audiophilia peforming at 5 p.m. and Mike Stone and the Rockers at 6pm.

Delavan company offers students chance to explore careers

Geneva Supply Inc., a nine-year old Delavan wholesale business that works closely with Amazon.com and other online sites to provide products to online shoppers, is reaching out to local high school students with its new program called BizTank.

BizTank is an eight-week journey of two-hour sessions filled with material that helps students learn what opportunities are out there for them and help them determine which of those opportunities are for them.

Geneva Supply co-founders Jeff Peterson and Mark Becker came up with the idea after the company was ranked No. 29 on the Entrepreneur 360 list of best companies in America for 2016.

Peterson said that gave the company street credibility and led to speaking engagements at Delavan-Darien High School. Contrary to the reputation this generation has, Peterson said, the students lit up, they listened well and they asked very good questions.

“Those kids are not hearing enough stories about businesses,” Peterson said.

Peterson said his time at the high school opened his eyes to the idea that the students needed more than he could provide within

the confines of a school classroom. He said he and Becker have experience coaching and decided to find a way to give back to the students of the community by making them aware of the opportunities that are out there for them and providing $500 scholarships for continued education as an incentive.

Open to county students

Any student in Walworth County can apply directly to Geneva Supply to get into the program by filling out an application that can be found on the company’s website and submitting a letter of recommendation.

The experience runs for eight weeks on Wednesdays. The inaugural session ended on Aug. 9. The fall session begins Sept. 27. A spring session will also be offered.

The Wednesday night sessions begin with free food for participants catered by local restaurants at 6 p.m. Peterson and Becker begin the official session at about 6:30 p.m. and then a guest speaker gives the students a real-world discussion about the career opportunities that are available in and around the community.

TIGHT INVENTORY MAKES AVAILABLE HOMES A HOT COMMODITY The Wisconsin housing market continued its expansion in June, with both sales volume and prices reaching record levels, according to an analysis of the existing home market by the Wisconsin Realtors Association.

June home sales were up 0.9 percent compared to June last year, which is the second straight month where the annual pace of sales increased at a modest rate. In contrast, home prices continued to grow at a robust pace in June, with the median price increasing 6.3 percent over the past 12 months to $186,000.

Locally, the three-county area (Kenosha, Racine and Walworth) saw the number of homes sold in June increase by five over June 2016 and the median price for those homes was up $15,583.

The statewide figures represent the highest levels for price and sales volume since the organizations recalibrated its methodology for data collection in 2005, according to the WRA. The year-to-date figures paint a similar picture with sales up 0.3 percent and median prices increasing 5.3 percent relative to the first six months of 2016.

“We have a very strong state economy, which has fueled housing demand, but the shortage of homes on the market has kept sales only slightly above the very high levels established last year,” said Erik Sjowall, WRA board chairman.

Wisconsin’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.1 percent in May, which is well below the U.S. rate of 4.3 percent for that month, according to the WRA. In addition, it ranks among the lowest rates in the upper Midwest.

Specifically, the May unemployment rate was 3.1 percent in Iowa, 3.2 percent in Indiana, 3.7 percent in Minnesota, 4.2 percent in Michigan and 4.6 percent in Illinois, which is struggling to get its fiscal house in order.

“The main factor keeping sales from growing more is our lack of homes for sale,” said Sjowall.

The state had just 5.8 months of inventory in June compared to 7.1 months in June last year, a decline of 18.3 percent.

“As we’ve been pointing out for the last couple of years, inventories are in good shape in the rural parts of the state, but they are very tight in the cities,” noted Sjowall.

Rural counties had 9.3 months of supply, suggesting a buyer’s market, whereas sellers are in control in the metropolitan counties with just 4.4 months of available supply in June. This has led to much quicker closings than has historically been the case, with average days on the market falling to just 73 days in June. That compares to 86 days from the initial listing to closing in June last year.

“The Fed, with some help from low energy prices, has managed to keep inflation under control even as home prices have been rising significantly over the last few years,” said WRA President and CEO Michael Theo. He noted inflation did tick up this year with the annual inflation rate in the range of 2.2 percent to 2.8 percent between January and April but dipped to 1.9 percent in May as oil prices moderated.

In contrast, Wisconsin’s June median home prices bottomed out at $140,000 in June 2011. Since that time, prices have increased at an annual rate of 4.7 percent, which compares to an annual pace of inflation of just 1.4 percent over that same period.

“Home prices this June are now 32.8

percent higher than that same month six years ago,” said Theo. “As long as our inventories remain tight, there will be pressure on prices.”

He said this is good news for sellers, but it has a negative impact on affordability.

The Wisconsin Housing Affordability index measures the fraction of the median-priced home that a household with median family income can afford to buy, assuming a 20 percent down payment combined with a 30year fixed-rate mortgage for the remaining balance. The higher the index, the more affordable housing is in the state.

The index was at 210 in June 2017, which is about 3.2 percent below the level of June 2016.

“We’ve had the good fortune to have solid job growth, which has pushed income levels up in the state and at least partially offset the slight increase in mortgage rates and the more rapid growth in home prices,” said Theo.

However, the WRA predicts affordability will continue to slip over the remainder of the year, and encourages potential buyers to move quickly when they find the right opportunity.

Peterson said, statistically, many students end up having careers close to where they grew up, and the program gives local companies the chance to connect with local students.

One resource BizTank provides to other companies is in offering the eight-week series of speakers that can be simulcast or video-conferenced for $250. Peterson said that fee helps pay for the scholarships.

The BizTank students also participate in workshops that are open to the public and free. Information is available on the Geneva Supply website.

human resources department for Aurora Health Care, spoke on Aug. 9. Grayson described her job as a “work guidance counselor” in that she helps people figure out where they fit in in the work environment.

She said she did not know what she wanted to be when she grew up and she enjoys helping others figure that out now.

Grayson said Aurora is the largest private employer in the state with 33,000 “caregivers,” not employees. She said each caregiver must bring his or her “A game” every day because the health care business is not just about doing the job of providing health care, it is also about how it is done.

Everyone expects a health care provider to be able to provide basic health care, but if it is not done with the right personality or caring manner, a patient might not come back.

Wellness is the focus

Grayson said more focus has been on “well-care” rather than just health care in recent years as providers expand preventivecare methods.

“We help people live well,” she said.

Grayson said the goal is to get patients to enter into a wellness relationship with Aurora. He said Aurora caregivers are ambassadors for the company and the company provides accountability, teamwork and respect. She said Aurora wants to be a destination employer, not just a regional employer.

Grayson also outlined different career opportunities that Aurora offers. Peterson said that is one of the goals he has for BizTank. Many people – adults and kids – drive by a business or company and have no idea what really happens behind those walls.

When people think Aurora Health Care, they think about doctors and nurses, but Grayson outlined several other positions, some of which are not in the health field at all like marketing and information technology.

Peterson said the key to quality speakers is to invite people who will be willing to share real-life experiences. Variety is good as well. Grayson represented a large company.

The previous week the guest speaker was one man who started his own drone business.

The final segment of each session involves a group of the students in the program producing a podcast in which they interview the speaker, the speaker then asks them some questions, and then a roundtable discussion takes place during which the kids discuss topical issues.

Peterson said that gives the students experience interviewing someone, getting interviewed and getting comfortable talking with successful adults. He said one thing they learn quickly is to avoid dead air.

Scholarships earned

Peterson said students who complete an eight-week session earn a $500 scholarship toward continuing education after high school. The program is open to high school juniors and seniors and students can take as many sessions as they wish and earn additional scholarships that can be used for any kind of continued education.

“I am all for college,” Peterson said.

“But it is all about the kids making the right decision for them.”

Peterson said he is defined by his past experiences, not what he majored in when in college. He also said the decisions kids make early in life do not necessarily define them. Peterson said he went to college, then worked in the liquor industry, then took a job as a headhunter while still trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. He said his biggest skill, communicating with others, was learned while working in a bar, not in college.

“Continuing education comes in many forms,” Becker said.

Peterson also said kids should know that the time to take risks is when they are young. He said they won’t want to later in life when they have mortgages and other responsibilities.

“There is no pressure to have it all figured out right now,” he said.

“We want it to become a community passion,” he said.

Becker said other local businesses could provide money for scholarships or provide internships and job-shadowing opportunities for local students. He said some have already shown an interest. Peterson said others could cater the dinners or provide guest speakers.

“We hope it gets bigger and better every session,” Peterson said.

Peterson said 23 kids participated in the first session and he was very happy with that number. He said sessions are capped at 60 students per session because of the need to fund the $500 scholarships, but he does not envision turning people away who are interested. Peterson said Geneva Supply is now a participant in the Delavan-Darien Scholarship Foundation as well.

BizTank is not something that only helps Geneva Supply. Danny Butler, a University of Wisconsin-Madison student who is interning at Geneva Supply, said the program provides potential interns and employees for local companies.

It also provides networking opportunities for the companies. Trademarking Manager Melissa DeBuck said the program has some really good students who provide a great pool of talent for local companies to draw from.

Becker said he and Peterson learn something new every week listening to the guest speakers or interacting with the kids.

He said he has learned much more about how people move up in career lanes in other professions.

Student growth noted

Peterson said watching the students grow in front of them has been great. He and a variety of students are represented in the group and he doesn’t think they would all necessarily be friends in high school, but they have worked well together in this environment.

He said the one thing they all share in common is that they all are trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives and they have all felt comfortable sharing their thoughts without the fear of judgment.

“We are not labeled here. We are just kids getting along,” said Hunter Huber, a 2017 D-DHS graduate, intern at Geneva Supply and participant in BizTank.

Most of the kids who participate heard about the program in a class at D-DHS or when Peterson and Becker came in to speak to the junior class during a homeroom period last year. BizTank also has its own YouTube channel and information about it is on the Geneva Supply Facebook page.

The open house for the fall session will be from 5 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. Sept.

Peterson said the program helps kids learn about careers and about life.

“They will have failures in life,” he said.

“They will bounce back.”
