The threat of boating-related CO poisoning Boating is a popular summer pastime.

Few activities can be as relaxing and aweinspiring as a day spent on the water.

Safety is an essential component of responsible boating. Veteran boaters know that the work is never done in regard to ensuring their vessels are safe for everyone on board. One potentially harmful component boaters must be aware of is carbon monoxide, often referred to as “CO.” Understanding CO and the threat it poses can help boaters and their passengers stay safe this summer.

UNDERSTANDING CO When carbon-based fuels burn, they produce CO. Gasoline, oil and propane are some common examples of carbon-based fuels. CO also can be a byproduct of gaspowered generators, cooking ranges and water heaters.

CO BUILDUP According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, large boats, including houseboats, sometimes have generators that vent toward the rear of the boat.

This venting makes people on the rear swim deck or water platform of the boat vulnerable to CO poisoning. The CDC also notes that traveling at slow speeds and idling can lead to a buildup of CO in the cabin, a buildup that can increase due to wind coming from the aft section of the boat.

Poorly ventilated canvas enclosures, enclosed spaces, which can trap CO, and

blocked exhaust outlets are some additional ways that CO can accumulate on a boat.

THE SIGNS OF CO POISONING The CDC says that CO can poison or even kill people who breathe in too much of it. As a result, it’s imperative that boaters and people who plan to spend time on a boat, learn to recognize the signs of CO poisoning, which include: • Headache; • Dizziness; • Weakness; • Nausea; • Vomiting; • Chest pain; and • Confusion.

When on a boat, it’s important that people do not write any of these symptoms off as seasickness.

MAINTAINING A BOAT The CDC notes that symptoms of CO poisoning may not be evident, so it’s important that appropriate measures are taken to ensure boats are always in proper working order. When purchasing a CO detector for your boat, make sure to buy one listed by the Underwriters’ Laboratories as appropriate for marine use inside the boat.

The following are some additional measures boaters can take to maintain their boats and reduce their risk, and their passengers’ risks, for CO poisoning, courtesy of the CDC: • Properly install and maintain all fuelburning engines and appliances;

• Educate all passengers about the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning; • Swim and play away from areas where engines vent their exhaust; • Watch children closely when they play on rear swim decks or water platforms; • Never block exhaust outlets, as blocking outlets can cause CO to build up in the cabin and cockpit areas even when

hatches, windows, portholes, and doors are closed; and • Dock, beach or anchor at least 20 feet away from the nearest boat that is running a generator or engine. This is important because exhaust from nearby vessels can send CO into the cabin and cockpit of a boat.

Drunken driving in a boat is just as illegal - and can be even more hazardous - than drunk driving in a car. According to the latest U.S. Coast Guard statistics, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.

A few years ago, BoatUS received a surprising letter. The writer described a Memorial Day weekend getaway on a Florida lake with five friends.

The group all went out on the boat, drank some beer, and had some snacks before visiting a bar that evening where they had some more drinks. When they left the bar, it was dark and they were all singing and laughing as the boat zoomed back across the lake.

hospital, his jaw wired shut, having been unconscious for days. One of the friends from the boat visited him in the hospital that day and told him that, on the way back, they had struck an unlit dock. One of the passengers, she said, had broken his back, crippling him. Another had a serious brain injury. Sadly, another passenger died of his injuries.

The letter writer was the owner and operator of the boat that night and was charged with boating under the influence as well as manslaughter.

BoatUS has long warned of the dangers of drinking and boating, and the letter really got our attention after we realized it came from the Florida State Prison where the writer had been sentenced to several years.

“Who would have thought going boating and having some drinks would have led to this?” he wrote. “We were on a boat, not in a car, no one had to drive, and there was almost no one else on the lake that night. But I will have this grief, sorrow, and profound regrets the rest of my life.”

This tragic story, unfortunately, is too common. According to the latest U.S. Coast Guard statistics, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.

Where the primary cause was known, it was listed as the leading factor in 19% of deaths. And alcohol use ranks as one of the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. Because most minor accidents aren’t reported to the Coast Guard, it’s hard to say how many dock bruises, falls, and aggressive boating incidents are related to alcohol, but it’s also likely to be in the top five.

Alcohol dangers

Most people know that alcohol affects judgment, vision, balance, and coordination, which greatly increase the likelihood of accidents. The Coast Guard says that in alcohol-related fatalities, more than half the victims capsized their boats or went overboard. But what you might not know is that a boater is even more likely to become impaired than a driver of a car.

Stressors, such as exposure to noise, vibration, sun, glare, wind, and the motion of the water affect our skills when we drive a boat. Research shows that hours of exposure to these stressors produce a kind of a fatigue, or “boater’s hypnosis,” which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. Adding alcohol intensifies the effects, and each drink multiplies your accident risk.

Drinking alcohol also deteriorates cognitive abilities and judgment, which makes it harder to process information,

assess situations, and make good choices.

Balance and coordination are impaired, and reaction time increased.

Alcohol also causes decreased peripheral and night vision as well as depth perception and makes it harder to distinguish colors, particularly the all-important red and green of boat navigation lights and aids to navigation.

An extra risk factor: Most boaters don’t have the benefit of operating a boat every day as they do with the family car and are much less experienced driving a boat and less able to react appropriately and quickly to a potential accident.

It’s pretty simple – don’t drink while you’re boating, especially if you’re the operator.

The BoatUS Foundation for Safety and Clean Water is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping boating safe and clean. It is independently funded by donations from BoatUS members and grants.

Kayaking Gear

Kayaking is a wildly popular paddlesport. Paddlesports offer people unique ways to enjoy nature while getting up close and personal with expansive waterways. Kayaking is remarkably accessible for people of all skill levels and interests.

According to the Outdoor Foundation’s 2019 Special Report on Paddlesports and Safety, kayaking has seen a consistent upward trend in participation for the last five years. Today, recreational kayaking is the most popular paddlesport, with more than 11 million participants in the United States. And the activity is almost evenly split among men and women (51 percent and 49 percent, respectively).

Many kayakers can enter the water with relatively no instruction in kayaking and take to the sport like a duck to water.

Of course, the right gear can make all the difference for both experienced and novice kayakers. Anyone who plans to be a consistent kayaker should probably invest in a kayak of his or her own. The right kayak depends on where kayakers plan to use it. Sea kayaks can sail easily through choppy conditions. Tandem kayaks carry two or more people and have more storage space. Touring kayaks are designed for long distance kayakers. Siton-top kayaks are ideal for beginners and casual paddlers.

Some additional supplies also can help kayakers get the most out of this rewarding activity.

• Paddle – Many kayaks are sold with compatible paddles. However, it is always a good idea to have a spare. Be sure to choose one made from sturdy materials, especially if it will be used in saltwater or brackish water.

• Life jacket – A life jacket is a must when on the water. While kayaks are relatively stable, should a tip-over occur a life jacket can keep you afloat and safe until you are able to reboard the kayak.

• Kayak racks and carriers – Kayaks can be transported to the water on roof racks that strap on to SUVs and cars.

Kayak carts and trailers can help you comfortably move the kayak to the water’s edge or dock, as kayaks can be

heavy and cumbersome to move on your own.

• Spray skirt – A kayak spray skirt keeps water from splashing up and onto your lap/legs while in the kayak. Staying dry can make kayaking more comfortable in all seasons.

• Dry storage – Dry bags and containers keep items like a phone, camera and GPS devices dry and secure.

These containers are designed to be water-tight when splashed or submerged.

Other kayaking supplies include dry shirts, special shoes, hats, and gloves.

Coordinated fishing gear can even be purchased for those who want to catch some fish while kayaking.

Kayaking makes for a great day on the water. The right gear helps enthusiasts sail with ease.

Outdoor dining boosts bottom line at Jonathan’s

Jonathan’s on Brick Street in downtown Delavan has been offering outdoor seating for several weeks in addition to its large, indoor dining room.

In an effort to accommodate customers’ preferences for seating and meet social distancing guidelines, reservations are currently required.

Upon making a reservation, guests will be asked if they prefer to sit in the dining room, at a high top table, at the bar or outdoors (weather permitting.) Larger groups will be seated at separate tables and the restaurant has implemented a suggested 90-minute dining time.

“If you feel you will need more time, please inform us when making your reservation to see if we can accommodate you,” a post about the reservation requirement states.

Staff recommends making reservations well ahead of time and calling earlier in the day – they have someone answering the phone around 11 a.m. – rather than waiting until the busy dinner hour begins at 4:30 p.m.

According to Lana Walton, who is on staff at Jonathan’s, the addition of outdoor seating has been well received by customers.

“The outdoor seating area has been incredibly popular with all of our customers.

They enjoy the fresh air and views of the park and sunsets as they dine,” she said.

In addition to tables for eating, Jonathan’s also has a special outdoor waiting area, Walton explained.

“A wonderful place to wait for a table is our padded chairs, which are extremely popular as well,” she said. “They’re comfortable and several rock as well.”

She said the crew at Jonathan’s is pleased with how customers and the community have embraced the outdoor space.

“We are extremely happy with the community’s response to our new outdoor dining and cocktail space,” Walton said.

“We look forward to seeing how the space changes as we move into the fall as well,” she added.

‘Come as you are’

Chef Jonathan Cross and his wife Tiffany own Jonathan’s on Brick Street. Though the official name of the street it’s on is Walworth Avenue, it has been referred to as Brick Street since the mid 1800s. The street was dirt but was paved with bricks to keep the circus wagons from sinking into the mud and since it was the only paved street in the city at the time, it became known as Brick Street.

At one point, the building Jonathan’s is in was set to be condemned.

“But with the vision of Debra Alder and her husband Jeff Scherer, they transformed it into one of the most enticing restaurant spaces in the area,” it states on Jonathan’s website.

Brick walls adorn three rooms, consisting of a retail wine and cheese tasting area, a large granite bar and another room for fine dining. Additionally, the main dining room is available for private lunchtime parties or business meetings for 20 to 60 guests.

The philosophy at the restaurant is simple.

The chef said he believes in offering elegantly presented plates that are both delicious and affordable.

“We price structure our menu under the big city steak and seafood houses to give even the budget-minded customers the ability to experience fine dining without breaking the bank,” it states.

Jonathan has a longstanding history in the restaurant industry working in various country clubs, golf courses, yacht clubs and fine dining restaurants since he was a teenager.

The restaurant is his first stand-alone venture “and with your support it will be a long-lasting dining destination for Delavan,” the website states. “We look forward to serving you… with a warm welcome and delicious food.”
