Delavan’s annual autumn celebration returns Sept. 14

Delavan’s Scarecrow Fest returns to the historic downtown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 14.

The community-wide, family-oriented event features scarecrows and free activities throughout the downtown area.

For the first time, festival organizers will be closing off Walworth Avenue in downtown Delavan for the event.

“The street will be closed to traffic and become a pedestrian-only walkway,” Visit Delavan Executive Director Kathleen Seeberg said. “People will be able to move freely between the food trucks, vendors and activities during the festival.”

Things to do during the festival include pumpkin decorating, face painting, hayride, mural tours, build-a-scarecrow and a petting zoo at the Aram Public Library. The event will also have food trucks, local vendors and live entertainment.

“What a fantastic way to celebrate fall; it’s iconic to build a scarecrow and we’ll provide all the necessary pieces,” Seeberg said.

Another highlight of the festival will be the wagon-drawn mural tours.

“You can ride in the wagon and get a guided tour of the Walldog Murals,” Seeberg said.

As of press time, the live entertainment acts were not set, but the Phoenix Park Bandshell will present Mike Stone and The Rockers along with Laser Fusion, which will put on a laser light show. Activities at the band shell run from 7 to 9 p.m.

On parade

During the month of September, there will be “Scarecrows on Parade” all over the downtown area. All scarecrows will be tagged and ballots will be printed for the public to vote for their favorites to decide the winning scarecrow. Prizes will be awarded to the scarecrow artists who receive the most votes.

Scarecrow crafters can go the DIY route or scarecrow kits can be purchased for $15 (entry fee included). Kits and entry forms are available at Remember When, 313 E. Walworth Ave., Delavan, or by contacting Lorie Wutke at 262-728-8670.

Those interested in entering a scarecrow can do so until Sept. 9. The entry fee is $5 per scarecrow for those age 13 and $3 for kids younger than 13. Entries from businesses, organizations, groups and individuals are all welcome.

Enter the raffle

In order to help keep the event free, the Scarecrow Fest Committee will have a duck raffle to raise funds. Raffle tickets are $2 or three for $5 and available for purchase at the event and at participating Delavan businesses.

Prizes for the duck raffle are $200 for first place, $100 for second place, $50 for third place as well as other prizes from local businesses. All proceeds benefit Scarecrow Fest.

Golfing for a cause

Annual McGMO raises $44,000 to benefit cancer patients

t was another successful charity golf event on July 26 that benefited the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at the Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan.

The 22nd annual McGMO charity outing was established in 1998 in loving memory of Dean McGregor, Ivan Grover and Calvin Monroe, who lost their battles with cancer, and for Kim O’Keefe, who’s a cancer survivor.

Mike Grover, the event organizer, said they raised over $44,000 this year and $1.15 million in the past 22 years. The money will directly impact local cancer patients at the new Aurora Sports Health in Delavan that’s scheduled to open next year.

The proceeds will purchase equipment that not only provides comfort to patients but also helps them build strength during and after the disease.

“Our mission has always been for cancer care and trying to improve the experience of someone going through cancer treatment or recovering from cancer,” Grover said.

A total of 174 golfers from 14 states competed in the charity golf event, with participants from California to New Jersey.

Every year an individual is recognized who supports the McGMO’s mission of improving the lives of those in the community who are struggling with cancer. This year’s Angel of Hope award was presented to Chuck Miles, a 1977 graduate from Delavan-Darien High School.

Additionally, there was a 19-hole tribute to Ron Anderson and Dana Wittman. Both lost their battle with cancer this past year.

“The auction was very successful in the fundraising efforts,” Grover said. “We had a wide variety of items donated by local businesses and individuals. The highest silent auction item bid was an autographed helmet signed by Bart Starr, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. The live auction items that brought in the highest bids were a California wine vacation and a private boat tour on Delavan Lake.”

O’Keefe, Scott Christian, Gregg Rice and Tim Torkelson took first place overall in the four-man team challenge. Second place went to James L. Hass, James R. Hass, Bill Duncan and Joe Almburg.

The co-ed team of Steve and Rena Monroe and Patty and Kyle Bradamore took first-place honors in that category. Jeremy and Allison Rose, Dick Darrouigh and Ashley Brown finished second.

In the women’s category, Sue Hughes, Linda Struhar, Betty Hanel and Laure Zulkowski finished in first place. Denise Connelly, Katy Lamantia, Kathy Schrock and Sue Augustine were runners-up.

Grover thanked all the participants, volunteers, the Delbrook Golf Course, Greenie’s Clubhouse, hole sponsors and donors of the Delavan community for continuous support of the McGMO. Aurora Burlington Lakeland Medical was the presenting sponsor.

Fishing is one of the most popular recreational pursuits in North America. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says around 40 million people fish each year. Fishing can be an ideal way to spend time in the great outdoors, and people often bond with family and friends while fishing.

As any angler can attest, there’s a rush that comes from getting a small tug on the line and then reeling in a fish. At this point, fishermen must decide if the fish is a keeper or should be tossed back into the water.

Sometimes the answer is very clear.

Rivers and lakes across the world are managed by various organizations that serve to protect wildlife and natural resources. Rules may be in place regarding

the sizes of fish that can be kept, which species are safe and which are protected, and even when people can fish.

In a study led by researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey that was published in the journal Fisheries, thousands of distinct populations of fish were studied.

Researchers determined that as many as four out of 10 freshwater species in North America are in danger of approaching extinction. As a result, fishing is regulated

by Fish and Wildlife officers and game wardens.

Those who are new to fishing or to a particular region must learn and follow the rules regarding fishing. Fishing licenses are typically required to fish in a given state or area. Always speak with a licensing

agency about size restrictions and any other rules regarding species of fish. Also learn about which methods of fishing are legal. Drag nets or other methods of mass fish collection or luring the fish with lights or other equipment may be prohibited.

Learning how to safely catch and release fish if the need arises also is an essential component of responsible fishing.

When done correctly, catch-and-release methods can ensure high survival rates and preserve native fish populations. The National Park Service advises those who fish to follow these tips: • Avoid fishing when conditions are stressful for fish, such as when water temperatures are high; • Use equipment that enables one to

land the fish quickly without struggle; • Avoid the use of scents and artificial baits that encourage fish to swallow hooks.

Learn which bait are prohibited in certain bodies of water. Artificial lures that hook the fish in the lip are preferred; • Avoid playing with the fish to exhaustion; and • Keep the fish wet and calm, and treat it gently to remove the hook. Hold the fish underwater and allow it to ventilate before release so it can regain its swimming strength.

You should always consult your owner’s manual for specific winterization techniques. Following a few quick, easy and relatively low-cost steps will protect your engine and save you expensive maintenance costs next season.

Extend the life of your outboard engine with these tips

As summer winds down, every boat owner clings to those last few warm days to take his or her boat out on the water with family and friends. Unfortunately, summer doesn’t last forever and as the sun sets on another boat season, it is time to start thinking about how to store your boat and outboard engine for those off-season months.

Proper off-season storage protects critical internal components from corrosive gummy deposits from unbound ethanol, which can damage your engine, fuel tanks and fuel system components. Proper winterization also helps to protect against the freezing of critical engine components.

If left untreated, damage from corrosion, broken parts, and general repairs could cost you thousands of dollars as well as time on the water.

So, as you prepare for off-season storage, follow these easy winterization steps to ensure your outboard engine is in tip-top shape for next season:
