Remember, Wisconsin law prohibits anyone from operating a motorboat, watercraft or manipulating water skis or similar devices while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Alcohol & boating THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK Almost half of all boating accidents involve alcohol. That should be reason enough to leave alcohol consumption for when you are safely ashore with no plans to travel.

Operating a boat while intoxicated is a federal offense, subject to a $1,000 fine. In addition, criminal penalties are as high as $5,000, and may even include jail time.

Under the influence laws are becoming more stringent too. In most states, the standards for determining whether an individual is intoxicated matches its state highway laws for operating a vehicle.

Wisconsin law prohibits anyone from operating a motorboat or manipulating water skis or similar devices while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Anyone who operates or attempts to operate a vessel is deemed to have given consent to an alcohol and/or drug test.

It is illegal for a person to operate a motorboat or use water skis, a surfboard, or other device if he or she: • Is under the influence of an intoxicant or a controlled substance; or • Has a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or greater.

Balance is critical on a boat; simply falling overboard and drowning accounts for at least one in four boating fatalities.

Alcohol reduces inhibitions, causing normally cautious people to try stunts or enter high-risk situations a sober person would avoid.

If you plan to drink, don’t go boating, or save your alcohol for when you’ve arrived safely back at the dock.

the noise and vibration of your boat’s engine causes fatigue. Alcohol impairs your senses further.

Stressors, such as exposure to noise, vibration, sun, glare, wind and the motion of the water, affects boat operators and passengers, thus making drinking while boating even more dangerous than drinking and driving.

Research shows that hours of exposure to boating stressors produces a kind of a fatigue, or “boater’s hypnosis” which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. Adding alcohol or drugs to boating stress-factors intensifies their affects – each drink multiplies your accident risk.

The Cars Time Forgot Car Show returns to the shores of Delavan Lake on Sunday, July 8. The annual car show is celebrating its 15th year at Lake Lawn Resort.

Auto enthusiasts from far and wide will show off their custom cars, gassers, trucks, motorcycles and racecars from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CARS TIME FORGOT CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN DELAVAN The Delavan-Delavan Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Lake Lawn Resort have partnered once again to bring the 15th annual Cars Time Forgot Car Show to the resort’s lakeside grounds.

Event organizers say more than 1,000 custom cars, drag cars, stock cars, trucks, motorcycles and other special-interest vehicles will be showcased at the event on the shores of Delavan Lake.

Organizers report registrations are higher this year than last year at this time and they are expecting a larger crowd. Last year about 11,000 people visited the show to see the 1,100 cars.

Delavan-Delavan Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sara Sekeres said most people don’t register their cars in advance, but she highly recommends they do so, to ensure they receive the show’s commemorative dash plaque.

“And the first 250 to check in at the registration tent to show their cars will receive a goodie bag,” Sekeres said.

The cost to register a car is $20 at the gate.

The show gives out several awards, including the Chamber Choice and President’s awards.

“We have 77 merchant plaque awards we’re giving out this year,” Sekeres said. “Those are awards businesses have purchased to get their name out there and throughout the show the judges go around in groups to vote on different features on

the cars. The awards are presented at 2:30 p.m.”

New this year

Sekeres said the show has added some new features, some in honor of its 15th anniversary.

“We have several fun featured cars, including Ghostbusters ECT0-1 from the Volo Auto Museum. Jake Zellmer (of Burlington) is going to have his car there too; he is a racecar driver and Lake Lawn Resort and Wisconsin Oven Corp. (East Troy) are two of his sponsors,” Sekeres said.

Other featured cars include several 1964 Buick Riviera vintage cars, a Beat the Heat car and a car from Mecum Auctions.

“We’re also having a lot more raffle prizes this year,” Sekeres said. “They’ll be announced throughout the show.”

Warming up

As in years past, the organizers are planning the Car Show Warm Up for July 7.

“We’re doing the road tour again, this year to Staller Estate Winery,” Sekeres said.

“The Gimmick Rally is returning again and new this year is the Poker Run, which will be at eight locations in Delavan. When they get back to Lake Lawn, whoever hast the best hand wins a gift basket.”

Area drive-ins offer carhops, traditional food favorites of a bygone era

emember when going out for a hamburger meant heading to your favorite drive-in, one where carhops took the orders and brought food directly to your vehicle?

Drive-ins were family favorites, but they mostly were gathering places for young adults and teenagers — for those with a driver’s license and an automobile at their disposal — on weekend nights to enjoy a burger, fries and a root beer. At most drive-ins in the 1960s and ’70s, drink choices were root beer and orange soda or a malt; no Cokes on the menu.

Drive-ins also were about socializing with friends. But for many, it was all about showing off of their autos, especially the hot rods popular with young men, many who had customized them to be as loud as possible.

And no drive-in was complete without the sounds of rock ’n’ roll music reverberating from their car radios.

A&W and Dog n Suds were two popular chains.

Roy Allen founded A&W in 1919 as a walk-up root beer stand in Lodi, Calif. In 1922, he partnered with employee Frank Wright to open the first A&W restaurant in Sacramento, Calif.

They became famous for their root beer served in a frosted mug — at a cost of 5 cents. The chain expanded in 1926 with franchises spread throughout the country.

Dog n Suds was founded in Champaign, Ill., in 1953 by two University of Illinois music teachers. Their specialties were hot dogs and root beer. Their growth was phenomenal, and by the mid-70s the company could claim over 600 restaurants in 38 states and Canada.

Dog n Suds also used carhops — usually teenage girls, who often attracted young men from the area.

While many of these restaurants have closed and been replaced by fast-food places such as McDonald’s and Burger King, drivein style restaurants in the Geneva Lakes area continue to share that old-time spirit.

Here are a few favorites for those looking to enjoy a step back into the time of “Happy Days.”

Authentic drive-in restaurants, like Gus’s in East Troy, go well with classic automobiles from the past.

Troy. When Gus and Jessica Athanasopoulos bought it 16 years ago, the restaurant was an old A&W that had been closed for some time.

“We liked the location and looked forward to bringing back the retro vibes of the restaurant,” Jessica Athanasopoulos said. “We kept the flavor of the restaurant by retaining the old-time look.”

The restaurant is all about classics. It starts with their décor, which takes one into the 1950s with the black and white tiled floor that carries to and up the wall behind the service counter. Red and white booths and tables fill the room. Walls are bright and multicolored with gasoline signs from Texaco, Union 76 and Mobilgas, along with photos of cars, cars and more cars.

That theme also dominates outside, where classic cars, trucks and motorcycles fill the parking lot Saturday nights. The autos mostly come from Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin.

“We usually have 200 to 400 cars here for the car shows,” Jessica said.

The classic theme continues with the food. Everything is made to order and fresh; hamburgers are never frozen. Specialty burgers have names such as the Heavy Chevy and the Ford Burger. Be sure to order the one named for your car. Vienna

beef dogs are served Chicago style — no ketchup. Italian beef, another favorite, is slow roasted in-house. Friday fish fries feature cod freshly battered.

And, of course, there is frozen custard, which is made in-house daily using milk from a local farm and 100 percent pure vanilla. This custard makes the best-frozen drinks, whether it’s a root beer float or fruit smoothie. Check out the custard flavor of the day.

It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Annie’s Burger Town

Elkhorn also has a classic drive-in at 645 N. Lincoln St., which is housed in a building that has been around for over 50 years. Jeff Halpin has owned Annie’s for the past 25 years and said the restaurant was built as a Dog n Suds.

“Root beer has been produced in this building for the past 50 years and continues to be made here today,” he said.

Annie’s prides itself on its freshly made foods from scratch.

“We use the highest-grade meats, which are delivered twice a week,” Halpin said.

“Our onion rings, coleslaw and ranch dressing are made in-house. Our menu contains a wide variety of typical drive-in foods such as the traditional burgers, hot dogs and our root beer floats are made with our own homemade root beer.”

“We are able to provide gluten-free and vegetarian meals as needed,” he said. “We do our best to provide whatever you need as long as we have the ingredients.”

While its menu has grown to include salads, wraps and a variety of other great foods, what do you really want? Annie’s offers good service, hamburgers, hot dogs, the special homemade root beer and that old-time, drive-in vibe.

And when warmer weather arrives, carhops serve customers in their vehicles or at the picnic tables. While there is seating indoors, it is limited.

“We keep the building in a time warp to keep the feeling of the early days of drive-ins when they were the favorite place to go.”

In summertime, drive-ins are not complete without an auto show, and Annie’s plans to hold a couple of events this summer — Jeep shows are on Fridays.

And with Annie’s celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, area residents are asked to watch the website for upcoming special events (anniesburgertown.com) or visit its Facebook page. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 to 9 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Meggy Moo’s

Meggy Moo’s Dairy Ripple is located at 600 Kenosha St. in Walworth. Danielle Svanstrom worked at Meggy Moo’s for 10 years before buying the business three years ago.

“Around 1954 the restaurant became a stop for ice cream called Dairy Ripple,” Svanstrom said. “In later years, the name was changed to Meggy Moo’s Dairy Ripple.”

The place in Delavan to find that drive-in ambiance, but with a slightly different flair, is Lopez’s Anchor Inn, 1325 Racine St. It opened in 1980.

Just south of the state line, Dog n Suds is located on U.S. Highway12 in Richmond, Ill.

It opened in 1963 and, although it has had a number of owners, has operated continuously since then. It is easily spotted with its distinctive red and yellow signs and mascot Rover displayed carrying the food.

In reality, carhops take orders and deliver the food.

Dog n Suds also is known for hot dogs and hamburgers, but with a special twist. The foot-long Coney dog and its Texas Burger are big sellers. The latter is the Tuesday special and sells for $3.50.

Kids’ favorites such as chicken tenders, corn dogs and hamburgers are served with a choice of tater tots or fries and a drink. The

entire meal is special because it is served in a classic car package that sometimes is more enticing than eating the food.

Dog n Suds is known for its frosty root beer. The best way to drink it is in a frosty mug, unless you prefer a float. The drive-in also serves 30 flavors of shakes, malts and sundaes. How many can you handle?

Lake association, sanitary district partner in Healthy Lakes initiative

The Healthy Lakes Initiative is a statewide Department of Natural Resources program that offers grants of up to $1,000 for best management practices installed by homeowners on their lakefront property.

In 2017, two grants were awarded to Delavan Lake homeowners and several other grants were awarded in Walworth County.

These are the five best management practices that homeowners can install with grant funding: • 350 Ft2 Native Plantings Create a 350 square foot bed of approved native plants adjacent to the lake, in order to improve wildlife habitat, slow water runoff and promote natural beauty. (Think of the space as 10 x 35 feet.)

• Rain Garden Create a landscaped shallow depression with loose soil and plants designed to collect roof and driveway runoff, in order to improve wildlife habitat, divert, clean and infiltrate runoff water, and promote natural beauty.

• Fish Sticks Place large woody habitat structures (dead trees) in groups near the

shore, in order to improve fish and wildlife habitat and prevent shoreline erosion.

• Diversion Practice Intercept runoff from a path or road sloping towards the lake using a water bar, diverter, and/or broadbased dip, in order to divert water runoff from going directly to the lake.

• Rock Infiltration Practice Create an excavated pit or trench filled with rock that stores runoff underground, in order to divert, clean and infiltrate runoff water.

The Delavan Lake Improvement Association and Delavan Lake Sanitary District will help homeowners apply for these grants.

Applications are due Feb. 1, 2019, for the 2019 season but information will have to be ready by Sept. 30. Some Walworth County permit fees may be waived for grant recipients.

Home for girls in Haiti built to fulfill late daughter’s dream

od had been chasing Bridget McCarthy her whole life.

He caught up with her in her darkest hour.

On Oct. 24, 2012, three police officers knocked on the door of McCarthy’s Delavan home. One of them took her then-3-year-old son, Brody, into his room to play, and another, Sgt. Robert Hall, told McCarthy her daughters had been in a car accident, and her 11-yearold, Avery, did not survive.

“My world went so dark, and it was like every part of me went into this deep vacuum, this deep pit,” McCarthy said.

In that moment, she said – when her external world fell silent, still and hazy despite sound and movement in reality – a strange light and warmth rose from inside her. She described the feeling as warm like honey.

“I knew right then that Avery was in heaven,” she said. “I knew it was the Holy Spirit.

“That day, I was like, ‘You’ve got me Lord, I’m here.’”

McCarthy told her story, called “Journey

of a God Girl,” May 20 to the congregation at the Christian Reformed Church in Delavan.

McCarthy, a single mother of three children with multiple fathers, said she’d made bad choices that led to her circumstances. The extent of her relationship with God went something like this: “Lord, why on Earth do I have these kids I can’t afford? Why is the electrical out? Why is my life so horrible?” she said.

In 2001, McCarthy gave birth to her second child – a girl, Avery Johanna – who had an inexplicable love for the Lord.

“I don’t know where she got it,” she said.

But Avery pushed for the family to go to church and pray before meals, and although she didn’t ask for much, she pushed to attend Delavan Christian School, McCarthy said.

McCarthy found Avery’s faith strange and quirky and spoke little about it.

“I was this cool, hip young mom,” she said. “I didn’t have room for Jesus in my life.”

The last day

On the morning of Oct. 24, 2012, Avery asked her mom if she would brush her hair.

McCarthy said mothers of daughters know how special it is when an independent girl asks for such a bonding act.

As McCarthy brushed her daughter’s hair, not knowing it would be the last time, “I thought she is so beautiful,” she said.

As mom and daughter got in the car to take Avery to school that day, McCarthy caught herself looking at her daughter and imagining how she’d look as a teenager.

On the way to Delavan Christian School, McCarthy and Avery cranked up Avery’s favorite music and sang loudly to Christian artist Jamie Grace’s song “God Girl.”

When McCarthy stopped the car to let

Avery out at school, Avery stopped for a moment and said, “You know Mom, I really am a God girl,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy watched her daughter as she skipped into school, “and I thought this kid is so weird,” she said, smiling.

That day, instead of switching the radio to her own style of music, McCarthy listened to “Avery’s music” on her way to work.

At 6 p.m. that day, Avery and her sister, Jadrian, were scheduled to arrive home from Avery’s gymnastics practice in Whitewater.

At 6:10 p.m., McCarthy got worried. Avery had youth group that night, and McCarthy knew she would never be late for that.

“I remember just knowing that something wasn’t right,” she said.

She put a shout out to family and friends on Facebook. “I said, ‘I can’t find the girls,’” she said. Her support system told her everything was probably fine – they were just late.

But McCarthy’s nagging feeling grew when she called police to ask whether there had been an accident, and the dispatcher asked for little information from her but told her officers would be in touch.

door and delivered the news that changed her world.

Picking up the pieces

After losing her middle child, McCarthy struggled to keep it together. She still had two children to raise – one just a toddler, and one who couldn’t be left alone because she felt such guilt being the driver in the crash that ended her sister’s life.

One Saturday when McCarthy couldn’t take it anymore, she went out for a drive and ended up in the Shopko parking lot, sobbing.

As she sat there, she found in the car a handwritten letter from her daughter that said, “I am here with you always. I will never forget about you. Do you know Jesus? I do.”

Avery had written the note a few weeks earlier after McCarthy had taken her daughter to a concert. She had a little extra spending money for Avery and asked whether she wanted to buy some concert souvenirs, but Avery instead wanted to spend the money to sponsor a child, McCarthy said.

At the concert were rows of pictures of children from Third World countries that donors could pay to sponsor. McCarthy said Avery examined the table, looking intently at the pictures as though she were searching for something she’d lost.

“She seemed to know something I didn’t,” she said.

Instead of choosing a cute 2-year-old to sponsor, Avery selected a “scary-looking older kid” named Alfonsine, McCarthy said.

Avery had written the note to Alfonsine, whom McCarthy later learned lost her best friend the day before Avery died and whose birthday is the day before Avery’s.

“There was something Avery knew at that table,” she said.

The path to a dream

After Avery’s death, McCarthy found drawings in her daughter’s room that illustrated her love for Haiti and vowed to rescue its citizens.

“I don’t know why an 11-year-old girl thinks she can save a country, but whatever,” she said.

McCarthy decided to start a ministry in her daughter’s name called AveryDay Ministries and raise money for Haiti to do her part toward Avery’s goal.

A few weeks before mother-daughter duo Trish and Gabby Edwards were to leave for Haiti to administer the funds AveryDay Ministries raised, Amber Bachelier, who worked at an orphanage in Mirebalais, contacted McCarthy and said the orphanage needed children’s clothing. Bachelier was bold enough to ask whether McCarthy was interested in donating any of Avery’s clothes.

McCarthy thought of Avery’s shoes.

Avery never asked for much, McCarthy said. She was content with hand-me-downs and non-name-brand items, but insisted on a certain new pair of tennis shoes, she said.

When McCarthy had to choose the outfit to bury her daughter in, she knew right away the jeans, T-shirt and those new shoes that she wanted to put Avery in, but when it came time to dress her daughter, McCarthy stopped at the shoes. Seeing her hesitation, funeral director Mark Monroe suggested McCarthy put a pair of her own socks on her daughter’s feet and save the shoes.

Shortly thereafter, Delavan resident Anna Terpstra Lohse called McCarthy and asked her to accompany a group on a medical mission to Haiti. McCarthy hadn’t looked at Haiti on a map and had never considered traveling to the country herself, but Lohse

told McCarthy she thought God wanted her to go. However, Lohse told McCarthy, the deadline to sign up was the next day and the organizer was difficult to get ahold of. But McCarthy assured Lohse she would give him a try.

He answered on the first ring, and McCarthy was bound for Haiti in March 2014.

“I was thoroughly convinced God had called me,” she said. But she said, “I did not understand how God was going to change my life through this trip.”

Once in Haiti, the group traveled on a winding gravel road up one side of a mountain and down the other to an orphanage, where armed guards stood with what looked like Civil War-era weapons.

She was introduced to a woman who began sobbing when she saw McCarthy, hugged her tight and whispered, “I have your daughter’s shoes.”

McCarthy reflected on the circumstances that led her to that place – Bachelier being bold enough to ask for Avery’s clothes, Monroe suggesting socks for Avery instead of her shoes and Terpstra insisting she was being called to Haiti.

“How many people had to be obedient to God to get Avery’s shoes to where they needed to be?” she said.

Eyes opened to crisis

Bachelier saved Avery’s shoes for Denise, a girl who was the victim of voodoo customs in Haiti whereby the oldest daughter is sacrificed, McCarthy said. Patterns are cut in their faces with razor blades, and Denise was so traumatized by what had been done to her that she wasn’t verbal.

McCarthy met Denise on her first trip to

Haiti.

“I met the little girl who got Avery’s shoes,” she said.

One of the first phrases she learned to say was “Avery’s shoes,” McCarthy said.

On that trip in 2014, McCarthy fell in love with Haiti and returned to the orphanage five more times over the next couple of years. On her trips, she learned about many things she “was not OK with,” she said.

Among them were that three full-time staff members cared for 120 kids at the orphanage and the children there were not true orphans. They had parents but were orphans of poverty, meaning their parents could not afford to take care of them, McCarthy said. She also learned that of the 760 orphanages in Haiti, only 15 percent of them were registered. The rest have no oversight and are open to corruption and abuse, she said.

McCarthy recalled her time as a poor, single mom who didn’t have money for electricity or hot water at times and accepted public assistance and low-income housing.

As difficult as it would be, she said, if she lived in a country without such programs and having her children being taken away from her was the only way to make their lives better, she would do it.

Of the 120 kids at the orphanage, McCarthy said, 60 percent of them are under the age of 6. Older kids are often kicked out for minor infractions, she said, and are subject to abuse under the guise of discipline. Physical and sexual abuse by staff members and older residents is rampant, she said.

McCarthy also learned that girls who leave the orphanages when they become young women have a 70 percent to 75 percent chance of being sexually assaulted.
