Teach them to fish How to make the most of kids’ first angling experience

Summertime boating safety tips for families

Keep the family safe when out on the water. Make sure everyone has a properly fitted life jacket and you follow these safety tips.
As summer approaches, many families look forward to more time on the water together. The fun might include boating and other watersports, such as tubing, skiing, or wakeboarding. Preparation and education are the keys to a safe and successful day on the water. So get the summer off to a great start by making sure passengers of all ages have well-fitted lifejackets and understand safety procedures. When fitting a child’s lifejacket, be sure to select the current size. Don’t put a child in an adult lifejacket or buy one in a larger size for a child to grow into. Rather, put the jacket on the child and buckle and secure all straps. Then lift the child’s arm up over his or her head and pull up on the jacket. If it slips off, it’s too big. BoatUS offers a helpful video to show correct fit on their website, BoatUS.org/fit-video. If you don’t own a lifejacket and aren’t prepared to buy one, borrow one from a friend or neighbor, or borrow one for free through the BoatUS Foundation Kids Life Jacket Loaner program. Be sure a child or anyone else riding behind a boat not only wears a lifejacket, but also knows the hand signals to communicate with the boat driver while being towed. The following hand signals and rules of the water will ensure that everyone has fun and stays safe: • If the speed is right, use an OK sign with your thumb and first finger; • If you want the driver to go faster, use a thumbs up – to slow down, use a thumbs down; and use a slashing motion across your neck to stop; and • If you fall off, raise both arms above your head and clasp your hands as soon as possible to let the boat driver know you are okay. While waiting in the water, ready to be pulled or towed again, be patient and allow the boat captain a little time to safely deliver the towline or tube to you. If you decide to come back aboard, the driver will allow the boat to drift to you with the engine off. When reboarding, use a step, deck, or boarding ladder only after the boat driver has signaled that it is safe to get back in the boat. Never swim near a boat while the engine is on. Tips for first-year boat maintenance You bought a boat. Now how do you maintain it? Just keep the following three points in mind, and the first year with a new boat should be smooth sailing. First off, engines, steering equipment, water pumps and anything else aboard that moves will benefit from use. Turn everything on and use it at least a couple of times a season. Raise and lower your anchor at the dock, for instance, if you never anchor out. Turn on a seldom-used air conditioner for at least 10 minutes every week or two. Let your circuit-breaker panel and the switches at the helm be your guide to be sure you don’t miss anything. This also ensures that everything is in working order if you ever need it. Next, keep it clean. This isn’t just aesthetic. If the engine space is clean, you’ll see an engine-coolant or steeringfluid leak right away, so you can have it taken care of before it gets worse. Debris in the waterways around deck hatches can clog drains. Then when it rains, if the
water can’t drain, it finds its way into that hatch, and sometimes onto equipment that shouldn’t get wet. When you notice a bit of metal looking rusty or dull, take five minutes to polish it with wax that protects stainless steel and aluminum and cleans minor corrosion before it permanently etches into the finish. That time pays off at the dock, when your boat sparkles brighter than your neighbors’. And finally, the adage a stitch in time saves nine holds particularly true on boats. If you notice fluid leaking or salt deposits forming anywhere in the engine space, for instance, take care of those small things when you see them to avoid a bigger job to work on later. Use more than your eyes too. As you spend time aboard your boat, you’ll learn what noises and vibrations are normal. Pay attention when anything seems different, since that is often the first indicator of something amiss. Beyond that general advice, here’s a quick list of maintenance items you’ll need

Walworth County Fair celebrates 170th birthday The 170th Annual Walworth County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn on Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 2. The annual festival puts the spotlight on agriculture in the area and gives the county’s youth a chance to shine. Often local 4-H members, the youth raise and show animals along with competing in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food. The festival is the largest county fair in the state and is a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state. Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more. Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for Sunday, Sept. 1, on the Park Stage.

Fully charge batteries after each trip and before winter or prolonged storage, and have batteries load-tested every spring – a simple procedure done aboard the boat. Immediately address any signs of water dripping onto electrical panels or junctions, and don’t store gear where it might damage wiring.
Fiberglass Rinse your boat thoroughly after each outing, and wash it once a week with mild boat soap – one that won’t remove wax. You’ll know it’s time when grime becomes harder to wash off the boat. Between wax jobs, use a cleaner wax that scours the dirt, but also leaves behind a protective wax coating, to quickly touch up trouble spots.

Polyester or acrylic fabric covers and sunshades need just a good freshwater rinse, plus an occasional light scrub with Woolite or natural-soap flakes. Once or twice a season, rejuvenate stain and water repellency with fabric sealer. Use only manufacturer-approved cleaners on window-like clear panels. Wash cushions with mild boat soap to remove sunscreen, food crumbs and dirt, and deep-clean and protect the fabric as needed with vinyl cleaner and protectant. Store cushions on their edge when you’re not using the boat so they dry inside and out.
For the kids The family friendly festival offers boatloads of fun for free on the fairgrounds. Kids of all ages can enjoy touring the barns and buildings, live entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, the Nick’s Kid Show, Learning Coop, Log Cabin demonstrations, racing pigs and more. The Barnyard Adventure gives kids a chance to explore the workings of the farm. Children can pick apples, gather eggs, milk Helene the Holstein, drive a tractor, and harvest vegetables in the garden. The fair’s Barnyard Adventure has won numerous awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expos, the umbrella fair organization of all fairs across the country. The Barnyard Adventure Stage is in Kiddieland next to the Barnyard Adventure Tent and the Pony Rides and hosts multiple family friendly acts all day long at the fair. The Barnyard Adventure Tent has hands-on activities for the kids, including a corn and soybean bin, honeybee display, canning demonstration, classes on hydroponics and cloning, and other educational activities. Barnyard Adventure requires the help of about 25 to 30 volunteers to guide the children and their families through the various stations of “From Seed to Supper.”

Wood and metal Wax is the best protectant and cleaner for metal, particularly aluminum. Whatever you choose – spanning bright, glossy varnished trim to just soap and water on teak, letting its natural oil protect the wood – stay on top of it. Stripping old varnish once it starts to crack and peel is expensive, but a coat of varnish midseason, as soon as the finish dulls noticeably, is a quick, simple job. Ignoring and then revitalizing teak also shortens its life.

The 170th Annual Walworth County Fair runs Aug. 28 to Sept. 2. The largest county fair in the state is held on the fairgrounds at 411 E. Court St. in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.
The job of the volunteer is to help the little farmers maximize their experience by making sure that each simple step is completed.
Butterfly Barn Kids at the fair love the Butterfly Barn as they try to catch one of the winged creatures and learn about their habitat and lifecycle. The barn is filled with all the foods butterflies love, including amaranth, butterfly bush and goldenrod. The butterfly barn was built for indoor plants and about 250 butterflies. Around May, the Walworth County Fair receives a shipment of caterpillars and nourish them into butterflies for the fair. Dozens of adult butterflies also are ordered; so there will be plenty in the barn during fair week.
Special attractions Headlining at the fair this year are country band Home Free on Saturday night and Christian rock band Newsboys United Sunday night. The Newsboys were scheduled for the fair in 2018, but severe weather cancelled the concert. Tickets for both concerts are on sale at walworthcountyfair.com. The Grandstand is also where you’ll find the Flat Track Motorcycle Races, truck and tractor pulls, monster trucks, horse events and the demo derby. Use only recommended cleaning products aboard – many boats use plastic vanity mirrors, for instance, which are damaged by alcohol in household glass cleaners. Water dripping from leaking hardware on deck can be hard to see, but if you find that one particular storage compartment smells musty, look around that area with a flashlight the next time you’re aboard during a rain shower. Some water invariably finds its way into the boat, which collects in the bottom of the hull, or the bilge, in nautical terms. Bilge pumps keep that water level low, but there is always a bit of water left that can’t be pumped out. Add biodegradable bilge cleaner wherever that water collects to keep the boat smelling fresh. Owner’s manuals for each onboard system include maintenance schedules. When in doubt, ask a pro. Advice from other boaters is well-intentioned but not always correct for your boat.
