THE HIDDEN DANGER TO SWIMMERS AND BOATERS Before you spend your day at the lake or beach, know that the water may have hidden dangers. Faulty wiring or damaged electrical cords used in docks and boats can cause nearby water to become energized. When a swimmer comes in contact with electrical current, it can cause a loss of muscle control, rapid or irregular heartbeat or even electric shock drowning. Electrical shock drowning can occur in both fresh and salt water. However, hazards for swimmers are greater in fresh water systems with lower salt content. “Electricity can be extremely dangerous when equipment is improperly installed or maintained. Further, normal use of boats and docks can break down the insulation
on wiring, leading to electricity leaking into the water,” says Jeff Kuykendall, a product manager at Eaton. “It is critical that electrical equipment and infrastructure used in and around our waterways is regularly maintained by certified electrical contractors and the applicable electrical codes and standards are followed.” In most recorded electrical shock drowning cases, electrical current leakage originated from faulty wiring or failing electrical equipment in or near boats or docks. Recent electrical codes and safety standards emphasize the use of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters and Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupters to help reduce

With 197 boats in the regatta there is not enough pier space, slips or buoys to hold the boats in the water between races during last year’s Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship. After each race the boats are lifted from the lake with
a crane and returned to their trailer, then the cranes drop the boats for the next race into the water. This year’s race will be Aug. 16 to 20 at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club and the Buddy Melges Sailing Center.
The Inland Lake Yachting Association will celebrate the sailing achievements and contributions to the sport of 23 families at its annual championship from Aug. 16 to 20 in Fontana. The championship will be held at Lake Geneva Yacht Club and the Buddy Melges Sailing Center, and the families will be honored at a dinner at the Yacht Club on Aug. 18. The 2017 theme for the event is “Sail It On,” designed to recognize the generations of ILYA families whose excellence on the race course and dedication to the sport have inspired sailors throughout the country and helped establish the traditions upon which ILYA activities are based. The Aug. 18 celebration will feature stories, videos and speakers on each family’s accomplishments within the ILYA. Established in 1898 to encourage and promote yachting and interlake racing, the ILYA now includes 51 yacht and sailing clubs in 10 states and the District

Yachting Association to honor families at regatta of Columbia. Its annual championship attracts world, national, Olympic, club and intercollegiate champions. The Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship is America’s No. 1 inland lake yacht racing competition and features some of the fastest mono-hull sailboats in the world. This year’s Inland, which is expected to attract more than 200 boats and 500 competitors, will determine the top sailors in the A-Scow (38 feet, six to seven crew), E-Scow (28 feet, three to four crew), C-Scow (20 feet, two to three crew), and the MC-Scow (16 feet, one to two crew). Selected for recognition is the Melges family from Lake Geneva Yacht Club, with ILYA championship titles won by Harry C. Melges Sr. (in Class A), Olympic medalist and America’s Cup helmsman Harry C. “Buddy” Melges Jr. (Classes A, E, C), Melges 24 World Champion Harry Melges III (Classes E, C, M, X), Hans Melges (Class X), and Harry Melges IV (Class X,
2016 and 2020 Olympic Laser contender. Additional Lake Geneva- and Delavanarea families to be honored are the Davenport; Lund, Mattison and Navin; and Goes families; and from Pewaukee Yacht Club, the Barkow and Friend; and the Gutenkunst, O’Malley, Sawyer, Meyer, Ruf, Koch, Schmidt, Spencer, Tornehl and Davis families. Other families to be recognized are Burton and Strothman and Tews from Lake Minnetonka; Driessen from Gull Lake, Minn.; Eckert from Cedar Lake; Everist from Okoboji, Iowa; Keck from Lakes LaBelle, Nagawicka and Beulah; Prange from Okauchee,; Reese and Hirn from Long Lake, Ill., and Lake Geneva; Tesar and Quiram from Clear Lake, Iowa; and Wyman from Oshkosh. The 2017 ILYA Championship’s five days of racing will be followed by award ceremonies Aug. 19 and 20. Including the 2017 event, Lake Geneva Yacht Club will have been host for the championship 18 times, most recently in 2015 and 2016.

Don’t let kids drown – Teach them to swim
Cooling off in a pool, lake or ocean can be a refreshing idea—but only if you know how to avoid the dangers. Drowning is a leading cause of death in children under 14. One reason is that 70 percent of African-American and 60 percent of Hispanic children don’t know how to swim, the USA Swimming Foundation reports. Minority children are also less involved in competitive swimming when compared to their white peers, comprising only 1 percent of USA Swimming membership. Some of the reasons include: • Lack of swimming access – Facilities in traditionally underserved communities are few and far between and tend to be expensive. • Cultural constraints – Data shows there may be a legacy of fear, perpetuated through generations. • Parental perceptions – Adults who don’t swim may not know what needs to be done so that their children learn to swim safely. To help close the gap in swimming safety, the YMCA created Safety Around Water, a program that teaches children of all ages and backgrounds – and their parents – that water should be fun, not feared, as long as you know how to stay safe. This year, the Y awarded more than 27,000 scholarships for free water safety lessons to children in underserved communities. The children learn fundamental water safety skills that include what to look for in a safe place to swim, what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly,
and how to swim a short distance on their front, roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety. “The Y teaches more than 1 million children from all backgrounds invaluable water-safety and swim skills every year, and the disturbing statistics about youth drownings underscore the significance of this work,” said Kevin Washington, president and CEO of Y-USA. “We are giving swim scholarships to children in underserved communities who statistically are at greatest risk of drowning so they can learn to be safe in and around the water. The Y is committed to reaching more kids, saving more lives and changing the statistics.”
Water safety If you know how to stay safe in and around water, swimming can be a lifelong source of fun and exercise. Here are six things you should know: • Never swim alone. Swim only when a lifeguard is on duty. • Supervise children whenever they are in or near water. Whether it’s a bath, the ocean or anything in between, stay within arm’s reach of the child at all times. • Don’t hold your breath. When swimming, children should avoid holding their breath for any length of time. This can lead directly to drowning and other severe physical side effects. • Wear a life jacket. Novice and nonswimmers should wear Coast Guard– approved life jackets. • Don’t jump in to save someone
struggling in deep water. Even if you’re a great swimmer you can be overpowered by a panicked person, pulling you underwater. The Y teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for the swimmer and pull him or her to safety. • Enroll in water safety classes. The Y

The Walworth County Fair will be back in a big way in 2017. The fair, which will be from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4, will have a theme of “Are You Ready For Big?” and organizers are emphasizing this year’s event will be big in multiple ways. “We are pretty excited. I think we’re going to have a really good fair this year,” said Larry Gaffey, the general manager of the fair. “People are going to love it. We will have the biggest turkey, the biggest boar and biggest horse. No one will believe how big these turkeys are. It will be fun to look at all that stuff.” The fair will also feature some of the biggest names in music, including with the recent announcement of Martina McBride performing. Also, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult will hit the stage on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

Riders won’t be taking any bull when the fair kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 30. At the grandstand at 7 p.m., professional bull riders will participate in competitive riding. Also a part of the event will be the Pro Elite World Challenge barrel racing competition as cowgirls ride athletic horses through a course around barrels. Professional riders will compete against sanctioned local riders. Then on the last day of August, more competition will be at the grandstand, as the Walworth County Fair Truck and Tractor Pull takes center stage at 11 a.m. and the Badger State pull will start at 7 p.m. The county pull is free, but there is a $5 admission fee for the Badger State. “There will be big motorsports, bull rides and great carnival rides,” Gaffey said. After the month of August comes to a close, so will the fates of several old automobiles, as monster trucks will roar through the grandstand. All Star Motorsports Productions hosts the fair’s monster truck rally on September 1 at 7 p.m. Returning to the fair this year are the arm wrestling tournament, which will feature tests of strengths by people of all ages with weigh-ins on Sept. 2 at noon, and the Strut

The fair will once again showcase the entertainment that it has become so well known for. Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult will hit the stage on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in the grandstand. The mud will be flying and the rumbling will be in the air on Labor Day, as the demolition derby hits the grandstand with three heats – one at 1:30 p.m., the second
at 4 p.m. and the last one at 6:30 p.m. Wristbands will be available for $10 so fair-goers can see all three heats.

Horses will be a major portion of the fair as well, as 12 events will be on the docket between Friday and Monday. All day on Friday starting at 8:30 a.m., the Smiles Open Horse Show will be in the Horse Arena. Also on Friday, the Draft Horse Halter Class will be at 10 a.m. in the Draft Horse Arena. On Saturday at 8:30 a.m., the Boots and Saddle Open and Speed Show will take place in the Horse Arena. The Draft Horse Arena
will be the site for the Cart/Hitch at 10 a.m. The Harness Races will be at noon at the grandstand. On Sunday, the horse events continue with the Linn 4-H Youth Benefit Horse Show in the Horse Arena at 8:30. Hitch Class starts at 10 a.m. in the Draft Horse Arena. On Monday, the Horse Pulling Contest starts at 8:30 a.m. in the grandstand. The Drill Team starts at 11 a.m. in the Draft Horse Arena. “There will be more free entertainment with the pig races and dachshund races,” Gaffey said. ands and bag pipers played, hundreds of well-wishers lined up to show their gratitude and family members were there to surprise him when Frank Bunnell arrived at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee on May 21. “That was the most emotional part of the whole thing,” said the 89-year-old veteran from Delavan who took the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. “The people were just so gracious. They wanted to shake my hand.” Bunnell and Art Romani, 90, of Delavan, were among 97 veterans aboard the 39th Honor Flight from Milwaukee. Bunnell served in the U.S. Army as part of post-World War II occupation forces in Germany while the Korean War was under way. Romani served in World War II. The May 21 Honor Flight had six World War II veterans, one Vietnam veteran and 90 Korean War veterans on board, Bunnell said.

Chance friendship Bunnell was born and raised in Lake Nebagamon 30 miles from Superior and worked at the Johns Manville plant in Waukegan, Ill., manufacturing asbestos products before moving to Delavan about 65 years ago. In 1959, he married his wife, Margaret, who died in 2009, and they had three children. He had a variety of jobs over the years including driving truck, working in lumber yards and delivering farm products. “I’ve done a lot of things in my life,” he said. “I would do it again – including getting married.” After retiring, Bunnell spent many mornings having coffee at the Delavan fire station, then on Seventh Street, with police chief, and now fire chief, Tim O’Neill.

Each veteran was accompanied by a guardian. Mike Janzen, a former U.S. Air Force pilot from Burlington, was Bunnell’s guardian. The pair met by chance 14 years ago.

One morning in 2003 after leaving the fire house, Bunnell saw the car wash – another occupation he’d experienced – operating at Seventh and Wisconsin streets and stood at the railroad tracks to watch for awhile. Bunnell said Janzen, who owns Jet Wash, came over to ask Bunnell if something was wrong, extended his hand and introduced himself. “We’ve been the best of friends ever since,” he said. Janzen showed Bunnell around the car wash and offered the then-74-year-old a part-time job, which he accepted. The Honor Flight, Bunnell said, was Janzen’s idea, and he made the arrangements. Bunnell recalls the emotion of sailing away from the coast of his country 67 years ago but had never been to his country’s capital.
‘Impressive’ sights The day of the Honor Flight began at 3 a.m. for Bunnell to board a plane in Milwaukee at 7 a.m. for the hour-and-35minute flight to D.C. Buses were ready for veterans and their guardians to board at the airport in Washington for their first stop – the World War II memorial. “That’s huge,” he said. “There’s over 400,000 Americans buried there.” The memorial encompasses 635 acres on different sites, Bunnell said. Veterans saw the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. “Very impressive,” Bunnell said. He said school children were allowed to come and place wreaths on the tomb, and Taps was played. “The bugler played Taps twice,” he said. “I never heard a clink. Just perfect.” Bunnell said the Korean War Veterans Memorial, dedicated in 1995, was “very, very impressive.” It includes a mural wall with 2,500 photographs of troops sandblasted into a 164-foot granite wall and 19 stainless steel statues that stand 7 feet tall and represent soldiers in Korea. The group also visited the Iwo Jima Memorial – a sculpture of the iconic 1945 photograph of six Marines raising a flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. “That’s quite impressive,” Bunnell said. The group also visited the Vietnam Wall, but Bunnell said he wasn’t able to find the names of three Delavan veterans etched into the wall. “We didn’t have time,” he said. “It’s so big, it’s so long, it tapers both ways down to nothing, all made of granite.” Bunnell did, however, find the name of Maj. Richard Bong, a World War II ace from Wisconsin. Janzen also pushed Bunnell’s wheelchair to give him a view of the White House and the Capitol. He also saw the Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln monuments well as a memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was president when Bunnell was 17 years old. He said the FDR memorial was the biggest one there, had his famous quotes engraved in different areas and contained water features throughout the 7 ½-acre site. “There must be a dozen waterfalls,” he said.

the second battalion of the 16th regiment of the first division – a platoon known as “Big Bloody One,” he said. Bunnell was one of three men assigned to the border as look-outs to watch the Russians. Outfitted with machine guns and radios, the men’s instructions were – if they saw a cloud of dust – to get on the radio and say, “Mayday!” “World War III was about to start,” he said. Fortunately, Bunnell said, they never had to do that. “The Russians behaved,” he said.

Emotional homecoming Nearly seven decades later, Bunnell said, the most emotional parts of his first trip to Washington, D.C., were the surprises in store for the veterans – a mail call on the flight home and the celebratory welcome at the airport. When veterans boarded the plane to return to Milwaukee, mail call was announced and Bunnell was handed a package – he didn’t open it until he got home – that contained letters from O’Neill, City Hall, his kids, the American Legion, Gov. Scott Walker, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson. Bunnell said every aspect of the trip ran smoothly with volunteers on hand to ensure veterans had cold bottles of water and lunches. “They took good care of us,” he said. Police escorts ensured a speedy route from one monument to the next, and veterans were passed right through security at the airport. “It was a well-executed experience,” he said. “It was just awesome.” Bunnell said he was privileged to have Janzen take him on the trip. “I told him what an honor it was, and he said, ‘No, it’s the other way around,’” Bunnell said. “I just feel so humble.”

War in the ‘50s As a 17-year-old, Bunnell recalls when FDR died in 1945 and Harry Truman became president. Truman remained at the helm when Bunnell was called to serve in Germany in 1950 – five years after World War II ended and as the Korean War began. Bunnell was in the second platoon of

Lake Lawn to replace marina building with two-story clubhouse, new pool By Michael S. Hoey CORRESPONDENT
Lake Lawn Resort received approval from the Common Council on June 20 for a precise implementation plan that paves the way for a redevelopment of the marina building on the property at 2400 E. Geneva St. later this summer. Attorney Dale Thorpe and General Manager Dave Sekeres outlined the plan for the council. Thorpe said the redevelopment will be of the building that serves the marina, not the harbor. No changes will be made to the harbor. Thorpe said the existing building will be torn down and replaced with a bigger structure. “This will be a major redevelopment of the marina to make it more of a draw for the property,” Thorpe said. Thorpe said no additional transient rental units will be added to the resort in the new two-story building. The building will only serve the marina, and construction could begin almost immediately once all approvals are attained. Sekeres said the structure is more than 50 years old and is not in good shape. He said the new building will be about 7,000 square feet and will beautify the lakefront. “It will be something we can be proud of,” Sekeres said. Sekeres said the new building will provide a clubhouse for members of the marina that will include upgraded restrooms, showers, locker rooms, a store with marina merchandise, storage, a kitchen facility to serve food and beverages, a members’ lounge, a roof-top deck and a new 1,200-square-foot pool. The pool will be constructed less than 75 feet from the lake, for which the resort had to get approval from the city. The county requires a 75-foot setback for construction close to a lake, but the resort is within the city, and the city has the power to allow a set-back of 50 feet in some circumstances. Alderman Ryan Schroeder clarified that only the pool will be less than 75 feet away from the lakeshore. The parking lot will also be expanded to provide 106 parking spaces in the main lot to the northwest of the building and a smaller auxiliary lot with 22 spaces. Four new stormwater basins will function as shallow rain garden facilities, and a low retaining wall will stabilize the northern edge of each basin.

Lake Lawn plans to upgrade mini-golf By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
Tucked away on the eastern edge of Lake Lawn Resort’s property not visible from Highway 50 is a miniature golf course that local residents might not be aware of. Next to the resort’s activity center where watersports rentals take place along its two miles of Delavan Lake shoreline is an 18-hole course used mostly by resort guests, said Wes Courier, activities director. The course is open to the public – yearround if patrons have the chutzpah to mini-golf in February – from morning to night at a cost of $5 per golfer. But, Courier said, few local residents seem to know about the course. “Right now, not many people local know about it,” he said. “We’re trying to do a lot more advertising for the local public.” The un-themed course has all the usual obstacles of a miniature golf course along with a nice rock waterfall, Courier said. The
resort has plans to upgrade the course and add a theme and has received bids including one from a company that designed a significant course in Wisconsin Dells, he said. “Right now it’s a nice course, but we’re going to make it into a better course,” he said. Possible themes that have been bandied about are a shipwreck or a pirate theme, Courier said. He said miniature golf is a summer activity that appeals mostly to kids but draws adults who golf along with the kids. Lake Lawn also does some team-building miniature golf activities including glow-in-the-dark golf and wacky golf. Glow-in-the-dark balls are used for glow-in-the-dark golf and wacky golf features a different implement at each hole other than a golf club to hit the ball such as a hockey stick, a broom or a cone, Courier said. He said the exercises draw corporate and church groups, family reunions and sports teams.

The Harold S. Johnson Food Pantry at St. Andrew of the Apostle Church in Delavan is renovating its space to better serve its clients. The pantry is temporarily located in space provided by Town Bank between the bank and Ace Hardware on East Geneva Street. Harold S. Johnson started the food pantry at St. Andrew in 1980 along with Bob Drefs. After Johnson’s passing, Drefs ran the pantry for about 15 years until May 2015 when Johnson’s daughter Terry Bailey and her husband were asked to take over. Bailey said if Drefs had not carried on after her father died, the pantry would most likely have closed. Bailey said that while the space in the basement of St. Andrew was still functional, not much had been done to it since the church was built in 1890. Bailey said the space was in serious need of a facelift. She also said the renovated space will allow the pantry to better serve its clients. The plans include a new concrete floor to replace what looked to be the original wood floor, new walls, a kitchenette, restrooms, more storage space, new shelving, and space for clients to be offered new services like blood pressure checks and job fairs. Bailey said the new space will be much cleaner and more efficient. Bailey said the work began on New Year’s Eve day and was projected to take about four months, during which time the pantry temporarily relocated to the space provided by Town Bank. “Town Bank has been so generous to allow us to be there,” Bailey said. “They have not charged us a dime.” Bailey said the space has been great and one benefit for some clients has been that the space is not down a flight of stairs. Six months into the project, the renovation has not been completed because when the new concrete floor was put in, contractors discovered the church’s

foundation needed tuckpointing. Bailey said the foundation mortar was crumbling and work to repair it was scheduled for this week. Bailey said that discovery set the project back because the church board had to discuss it, approve paying for the work, schedule the work, and then she had to reschedule the work on the pantry itself. Bailey said St. Andrew also helped pay for the new floor. The church paid $10,000, and she paid the rest. The money to pay for the renovation came from an inheritance Bailey

received that was earmarked for renovating the pantry. Bailey said her “staff” is entirely made up of 15 volunteers whom she is blessed with, and St. Andrew has been very supportive. “Ever since Dad asked for space in 1980, it has been there,” Bailey said. “They are glad to have it and to support it, and we couldn’t do it without their support.” “Part of the ministry of the Catholic church is to help the poor,” St. Andrew Trustee Jim Stiles said. “We have some people in the community who need help – what better way to do it.” Stiles said the pantry has served the community well over the years because of a lot of dedicated people who have volunteered their time. “Bob Drefs and Harold Johnson put a lot of time and effort into it,” Stiles said. “There is always someone bringing something in from the churches in the community.” Bailey said the mission statement of the pantry is: “We are an ecumenical group of volunteers dedicated to meeting the nutritional needs of others. Through Christ’s love and the generosity of the community, we distribute food donations in a just, friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere without regard to race, color or creed.” Bailey said she tries to treat her clients with respect like they were coming into her home, and she is excited to have the new space so she can provide an atmosphere that can give her clients a lift and make them feel it is OK to come to the pantry.
The community has always helped make that mission a reality by donating items for the pantry. “We have so many generous supporters,” Bailey said. Bailey said several local churches, businesses and private people donate items or money or host food drives. One example is the brown bag program at Piggly Wiggly. Customers can purchase a bag of items that gets donated to the pantry. “We are so fortunate. It is unbelievable,” Bailey said of that support. Bailey said the pantry’s goal is to serve the residents of the Delavan area community, but she wouldn’t turn anyone away. If someone comes in from another community, she said she would serve them and encourage them to visit the pantry in their own community in the future. Bailey said clients are asked to provide information like household size and income to qualify to use the pantry. She also asks for identification and proof of address because, if someone is homeless, they have different needs than someone who has a home. For example, homeless clients do not have refrigerators or stoves. Despite not having a firm timeline as a result of the delays, Bailey said she is excited about the project. The hours of operation have remained the same – 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Those hours are likely to stay the same after the move back to St. Andrew, but Bailey said changes could be made to keep up with demand.

bout five miles west of downtown Lake Geneva on Highway 50, stands the newly renovated Ridge Hotel. The hotel has stood on this site from at least the 1970s under different names including Interlaken, and most recently as the Geneva Ridge Resort. After a multimillion-dollar renovation – which began in 2011 and ended in 2016 – the new face and updated name, The Ridge Hotel, has been brought to the public. For those who have previously visited The Ridge, the new look is a far cry from the old. The Ridge has been transformed into a sleek, contemporary, upscale hotel with innovative spaces that will please visitors. Under the management of Paloma Resort Properties, the Ridge has become affiliated with Geneva National, which is known for its elegance and excellence in the Lake Geneva area. These adjoining properties on the shores of Lake Como allow visitors to share many of the amenities such as the three golf courses on the Geneva National Property. Upon entering the lobby of The Ridge Hotel, the open contemporary look makes the space appear even larger than it is. The former registration desk has been replaced with three custom reception pods doused in a peaceful amber light. Visitors are greeted with a warm welcome and registration is easily completed. The reception area is very impressive. A 3-D perforated panel on the ceiling allows light, meant to depict river stones, shine through and cascade onto the floor. The comfortable furniture in earth tones of greens, and tans bring the look of the outdoors inside.

According to Barbara Karabas, public relations manager for Paloma Resorts, the new look – which has changed the facility from a more rustic lodge into a contemporary and upscale hotel – is sure to please most guests. The Ridge looks to appeal to visitors of all age groups to the area. From millennials to families and for those just wishing to get away from their hectic lives. Every hotel seems to offer a coffee shop or café but The Ridge Hotel has its own unique take on that. Instead of being in a small corner, their café is large with many group seating areas and even a spot to gather around the television with friends to enjoy a favorite show or sporting event while enjoying coffee or a glass of wine or beer. This cafe is not limited to coffee – although they do serve excellent high-end brews from Collectivo and Rishi fresh organic teas. The café with the unique name of Bean + Vine offers a selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches and flatbreads and various muffins. And don’t forget the vine. Their wine choices include a variety of special Geneva National branded wines. In these days of popular craft beers, many of the local Wisconsin brews are also available. Adjacent to the reception area, the Bean + Vine is a meeting place. A favorite for those wishing to work with their electronic gadgets, is the countertop seating with multiple USB ports and WIFI availability. With its central location between Lake Geneva and Fontana, it is a convenient place to meet not only for guests of the hotel but also for local residents as well. The updated fireplace in the reception
area and the fire feature in the café, with wood or stone accents, add a look of warmth and encourages gathering around with friends. The Bean + Vine, as its name suggests, encourages sipping wine or enjoying coffee with friends.

The full-service restaurant, renamed Crafted Americana, will quickly become a favorite spot for a flavorful meal, elegantly plated, and served at tables overlooking the outdoor patios and Lake Como. The Crafted Americana reflects the look of the new hotel, clean lines, contemporary design and it takes advantage of the beauty of the property. The restaurant serves a variety of interesting and unique meals, crafted in house. The chef uses premium ingredients – many of them fresh, local products. They will cure and smoke their own bacon from pork belly. Homemade cheese curds battered with Spotted Cow beer batter (very Wisconsin and very tasty) are a popular appetizer. Among some of the popular items found on the menu are the house smoked bourbon barbecue ribs and the organic Irish salmon, as well as the halibut with crabmeat and lentils. Two special evenings at the Crafted Americana are Friday for the fish fry and on Saturday for the slow-roasted, cut-toorder prime rib. So stop in for dinner any night. The restaurant in addition to being open for dinner also serves breakfast and lunch. Thirty craft beers rotate through the bar. At any given time there are six on tap. The popular craft bourbons and custom infused vodkas are also available. For a real taste treat, try the dirty black cherry martini – the house’s signature spirit.
