Brodhead Health and Fitness changed ownership on March 1, 2019, to Heather Chojnacki. Chojnacki cleaned and helped during vacations at Brodhead Health and Fitness prior to purchasing the business. She happened to be present when the former owner announced she was looking to sell. Chojnacki’s motto is to enjoy what she does and work fun jobs. In addition to Brodhead Health and Fitness Chojnacki works for Brodhead School District and works for her parents at Sweet Minihaha Campground. Chojnacki likes to help people. She enjoys the business because she can help people be healthy. She likes the customers and stated “It’s a happy place.”
Chojnacki has received a warm welcome in Brodhead. “I think the people here like others in the community to thrive.” she stated. Chojnacki has heard many positive comments through social media and around town. There are over 200 members from Brodhead and the surrounding areas. Members have 24-hour access to the fitness center. Membership also includes enrollment in classes. Brodhead Health and Fitness offers six classes: 55 and Fit, Fit Camp, No Sweat, Cardio Sculpt, Aerobic Dance and Tae Kwon Do. Chojnacki is planning to add a yoga class in the near future. A personal trainer is also available. Chojnacki is working on becoming a certified health coach focusing on nutrition. She plans to have her certification sometime
this month. Non-members can enroll in classes and use the fitness center. Many former residents use the fitness center when they return to Brodhead to visit family or friends. Chojnacki initially had plans to grow the business. She planned to gradually add new equipment with an initial goal of one new machine per year. Chojnacki also wants to make the center more motivational to the members. She also plans to start selling Brodhead Health and Fitness merchandise. Brodhead Health and Fitness is having an open house celebration in May. There were tours, drawings, giveaways, refreshments and class demonstrations. Brodhead Health and Fitness is at 708 21st Street in Brodhead.

Sinnin’ Skinn Inkworks sees promise in downtown Brodhead

Sinnin’ Skinn Inkworks moved to 1008 First Center Avenue in downtown Brodhead late last year and received a warm welcome by city leaders and residents. Matt (Madd Matt) Bremer and Diana Baade own and operate Sinnin’ Skinn Inkworks. The tattoo shop recently relocated to a previously vacant building in downtown Brodhead from Orfordville. Bremer describes the experience so far as “phenomenal”. “I’ve gotten a better reception here than I’ve ever gotten in the eleven years I’d been in Orfordville,” said Bremer.
Brodhead residents and city leaders have stopped into the shop to welcome them to the city. Bremer moved from Orfordville because the building he was renting was sold and he was unable to stay there. Bremer stated the Brodhead shop is bigger, much nicer and the [building] management is much better to deal with than in Orfordville. Bremer and Baade knew while waiting outside to look at the shop that this is where they wanted to be. Sinnin’ Skinn Inkworks offers tattooing and piercing. Bremer has been a tattoo artist for 23 years and specializes in covering up and reworking old tattoos. He also does custom tattoos. Bremer stated he
likes to use bright colors to do cover ups and not a lot of black ink. “I like to make people happy with something they weren’t happy with,” said Bremer. The state department of safety and personal services performs annual inspections and issues licenses for Green County. In Green County, the owner of the shop must be licensed to do everything the shop offers. Bremer runs a very clean shop. Rock County standards are higher than DSPS standards and Bremer stated he is keeping the shop to the higher standards. Bremer also stated it is extremely difficult to get liability insurance. Bremer grew up in New Mexico and southern California. Bremer started doing

She started in Janesville and has been piercing for three years. “It takes the right combination of a people person and someone with the confidence and security in their ability to be a good piercer,” said Bremer, “and that’s what we found with Megan.” Socker knew she wanted to pierce since she saw “Parent Trap”. She started piercing her friends’ ears when she was in eighth grade with a needle, apple and ice. Socker pierced her own ears in art class in high school. Socker did her apprenticeship in Janesville and got licensed to pierce. “I don’t look at it as a job, it’s a passion of mine.” she said. Socker likes to practice piercing on her friends. “The only way you get better at it is by doing it,” she said. Socker walks through the process with the clients before piercing to help them stay calm. She is

excited for the opportunities by working with Bremer. The shop carries some jewelry and can special order anything their customers would want. Bremer is also looking to carry a line of aftercare products for tattoos. He is in the process of joining Thrive, an opt in text messaging program to inform clients of specials, appointment reminders and to help manage online accounts. tattoos because he was unable to afford to get any more tattoos for himself. His dream was to become a chef. Bremer graduated from college with a degree in graphic arts and child psychology. He then went through broadcasting school and was on the radio for twelve years. Bremer moved to Ohio and did his apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist. He started by making the needles by hand. Bremer got an appreciation for the art by working his way up from the bottom. Bremer came to the area in 2008. He initially wanted to open a tattoo shop in Brodhead but was told (in a personal opinion of a former city employee) there would never be a tattoo shop in town. Bremer went to Orfordville and established a client base in Dane and Rock counties. Some clients come from as far away as Green Bay, Wis. because of Bremer’s reputation. Bremer looks to pull clients from the west of Brodhead. He wants to target Argyle, New Glarus, Monroe and surrounding areas. Bremer enjoys being his own boss because it allows him to spend more time with his family. He stated his three boys are very important to him and he wants to spend as much time as possible with them. The business hours are by appointment to allow Bremer to work around the schedules of his children and his customers. The shop is set up to be a family atmosphere. There is a play area in the back of the shop separated from the tattooing area to protect the children from blood borne pathogens. Bremer doesn’t allow people to just hang out in the shop. “I want it to be a family place,” said Bremer “I want you to be comfortable”. Bremer is currently working seven days a week and scheduled six weeks out. “I don’t have a Saturday available until February and it feels good to me,” said Bremer, “I’ve worked really hard to get to this, to not have to do a second job.” Bremer has worked second jobs at Stoughton Trailers, Wal-Mart, and Chainsaw Barney’s for 10 years. Bremer stated he’s the workingman’s tattoo artist. He is willing to work with clients to make the tattoo affordable for them. “I started in this business because I couldn’t afford tattoos,” stated Bremer. He likes word of mouth advertising. “A fresh tattoo is the best advertisement,” said Bremer. Bremer has done some impressive tattoos. The longest sit time was 17 hours for a flower wreath around a woman’s waist. Bremer did a full back tattoo of Motley Crue, with the four-band member portraits and representations of all the albums Vince Neill performed. He plans to touch it up and take it to the Chicago Tattoo Arts Convention. Megan Socker has been piercing at Sinnin’ Skinn Inkworks since June 2018.

New trucking business keeps Day name in Brodhead

Day is a family name familiar to many folks who’ve raised livestock with help of three generations of Day feed stores along the Green-Rock county line. As a child, Bill Day helped his grandpa Donald, Sr., just as soon as he could lift and carry a feed sack. Bill learned to work hard in the Town of Spring Valley store on Dickey Road and was soon doing tractor work for his grandpa, too. Don, Jr., who with a partner constructed Day’s Feeds in Orfordville’s junction of State Highways 213 and 11, had to sell the store several years ago after suffering a heart attack. Junior, as everyone calls him, has gratefully recovered and kept working for the feed store’s new owners. Now, at 39, Bill is hard at it, too, in a new
Brodhead-area enterprise. He’s laying gravel while the sun shines. As an independent trucking business, with his wife Heather keeping the books and doing the paperwork, Day Trucking has Bill on the road 7 days a week delivering crushed rock. “I pay a broker to keep me busy six days a week,” Bill said, answering questions over his cell on a pause from a day-long assignment in Beloit. “Job sites, construction, road work, interstate work. “I truck loads on my own, too, for businesses, farms, residences, after hours and on weekends. I can do gravel driveways, too. I have my own skid loader to dig out a driveway and lay fresh gravel.” Day Trucking’s conveyance is a 27,700lb, quad-axel 1998 Freightliner dump truck. Freightliner, an outgrowth of Consolidated
Freight, has been a mainstay in semi-tractor, medium-duty and business class truck manufacture for nearly 80 years. The Days’ huge rig looks like new, and it can lay 22.2 tons of crushed rock like butter in seconds. With 21 years of experience, Bill makes it look easy. “I’ve had my Commercial Driver’s License since I was 18,” he said. “I drove for the DeLong Company in their agronomy department. I’ve done lots of other things over the years, too – concrete, roofing, heating and cooling.” Bill grew up on County Highway E north of Brodhead, with his mother Wanda and step-dad Boyd Piper. While students continued to take their regular high school classes, they began their lab coursework at 6:30 a.m. at the high school then proceeded with clinical exercises at Monroe Clinic in Monroe. Brodhead High School Nurse Laura Powers co-taught the class, in addition to her regular duties with the district. Six students from Brodhead High School and one from Monroe High School completed the course. Once they passed their certification exam they became certified nurse assistants.

Brodhead High School and Blackhawk Technical College formed a partnership this past school year to help address the shortage of nursing assistants in the area. The partnership produced a certified nursing assistant class at Brodhead High School, which is an exciting first for BHS, according to officials. The course was offered in hybrid fashion, meaning that the bookwork was done online, with the lab and clinical portions being taught in person, according to those associated with the program. 87227

Raupp family grows a new tradition By Erica Gokey
The Raupp family is in its second year of a new venture. Jessica and Brian Raupp, along with their children and several volunteers, again this year offer a pumpkin stand north of Brodhead on Highway E. The Raupps have a seven-acre spread they have transformed into a pumpkin patch. The number of pumpins is growing. Weed control fabric is laid down, weeding is done on a regular basis and water lines also run down the field to help water the seeds. Brian grew up on a farm and his family is very active in including the schools and FFA in their efforts to provide more learning opportunities to students. Jessica was also inspired by visiting several pumpkin patches and gained multiple ideas about different things a person can do with a pumpkin patch. Jessica said, “ After going and seeing several patches, it just put the bug in us to start our own.” Brian said, “We were just looking for something to do in the fall. We like going to apple orchards and those kinds of things. We thought well there’s not really one (pumpkin

Screamatorium IS A SPOOKTACULAR HIT By Erica Gokey STAFF WRITER
Brodhead’s scariest attraction made itself available to the public in 2018. The Screamatorium hosted over 1,400 people in its opening weekend. Gore and fright were everywhere in the 20,000-square foot space, but the process of turning the building from an abandoned shell and transforming it into an interesting, useable space, took a lot of fearlessness and passion. After multiple owners and sitting vacant for 20 years, the “Old Middle School”, now known as Brodhead Manor, finally fulfilled a dream in 2018 and gave a bump

patch) close that offers activities for kids.” Raupp’s said that they initially tried to plan some hayrides in October of their first year. There is also the possibility of games, a bounce house and other activities. They anticipate being open on the weekends in September and October. Although the Raupps lost some pumpkins to saturated fields in 2019, they were on track to have all the pumpkins picked by the first weekend in October. The project is a learning experience for the whole family. Brian said there is a lot of research concerning what type of soil a certain type of pumpkin needs and what nutrients

each one needs. Soil tests are performed on the field to make sure the crops are getting the nutrients they need. Brian spoke with the Brodhead FFA Director about having a pumpkin sale with the Brodhead FFA. Raupp’s were able to use the Brodhead FFA greenhouse to start the seedlings. Four different types of pumpkins are available at the pumpkin stand, including Howden, Jack O’ Lantern, Musquee de Provence, and white Baby Boos. Brian said, “ It’s the memories that you build. I remember taking the kids to the
Edwards Orchard and how much fun they had. It’s always fun to me. I enjoy farming.” Also eyeed for this year, for a senior project, the Raupps planned to till a strip of grass to grow plants for monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies are the second best pollinator behind a bee. The stand has come a welcome site in the fall and features pumpkins, small Timothy straw bales, corn stalk bundles, and corn stalk wreaths. Portions of the proceeds from sales are given to the Brodhead FFA. Raupp’s have an honor system for payment installed for payments from customers.

in attraction that Brodhead desires. Staff worked diligently to replace 36,462 boards in the gym floor. All boards were installed by hand over a three-week time span from the original gym flooring. The crew planned to sand and seal the floor in summer 2019. R.I.P. Productions has been in business since 2002. It is known as Illinois’ number one haunted attraction with Trail of Screams. The crew of R.I.P. Productions creates their own customized special effects, unique themes and detailed sets. In a press release, owner and operator Ann Margaret, stated, “Every attraction is
designed for maximum intensity and thrills. Don’t expect to catch a breather here.” Auditions for the haunted house are typically held in late August and early September. Approximately 18 people from Brodhead and the surrounding area were hired on as staff for the event. Actors are already employed by the company make up the rest of the cast. A total of 30 to 35 actors are used for the show. The haunt is privately funded. The only thing that has been donated to towards the event is a broken casket from a funeral home. Plans for the second and third level of the building have not changed. The
third floor is being set up for weddings, conferences, and banquets. The owners hope to build apartments to accommodate wedding parties for overnight stays. Event times are Sundays from 7 to 11 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 to midnight. R.I.P. Productions stated that parental advisory for the Screamatorium is strongly advised for ages 13 and under. The haunt is open from the last weekend in September through the first weekend in October.
