When the recession struck in 2008, recreational spending took a nosedive and it’s been a long, slow recovery for dealers of “luxury” items such as boats and personal watercraft.

But, things are turning around in the industry.

“We’ve seen a nice rebound in the last 18 to 24 months,” Wisconsin Marine Association Chairperson Michelle Shrider said. “We’ve seen more of an upturn in brokerage sales, dealers are still struggling a bit, but the brokerage sales are up.”

Dealers sell new boats from manufacturers and brokers deal in the used-boat market, Shrider said.

“The used-boat market is coming back strong, we’re probably close to what we were seeing before 2008,” she said.

Shrider said the association had a board meeting recently and most of the board of directors, who are marina owners, reported their marinas were nearly full already this season.

“It’s a good sign,” she said. “People are putting their boats in the water and we’re amping up the industry in the state, I know my own marina is about 98 percent occupied.”

Shrider said that while spring had

been a bit on the cool side – and more “wintery” than usual, most of the marinas she knew of throughout the state were launching boats or would be ready to launch in the next few days.

“I think everybody is hoping for, and anticipating a strong season with an early start,” she said. “I think the turn in the economy and the uptick in stock market is loosening up the disposal cash, which is crucial to our business. We’re hoping to see more sales in accessories and keep the repair business strong as the weather warms up.”

According to a press release from the National Marine Manufacturers Association it expects unit sales of new powerboats to have increased between six and seven percent in 2016, reaching an estimated 250,000 boats sold as consumer confidence soared and manufacturers introduced products attracting younger boaters. In addition to increases in unit sales of new boats, recreational boating industry dollar sales are expected to rise between 10 to 11 percent from $8.4 billion in 2016.

Wisconsin was one of the top 10 leaders in the nation in sales of new powerboat, engine, trailer and accessories in 2015, up 10 percent over 2014 with $617 million in sales.

The 2016 national new powerboat sales numbers will be released in May, but new

powerboat registrations are already up 6.1 percent nationwide over last year in February. According to NMMA’s 2016 U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract – Pre-Owned Boat Market 2015-2016, sales of pre-owned boats in the United States were up for the second consecutive year in 2016, increasing 2.5 percent in units and 2 percent in dollar value. Sales of pre-owned inboard ski/ wakeboard boats led the growth, up 6.8 percent in units, representing 2.1 percent of total unit sales. The full report is available on NMMA.org.

One of the few original Americanmade industries – 95 percent of boats sold in the United States are made in the United States – recreational boating is seeing some of its healthiest gains in nearly a decade, a trajectory the NMMA expects to continue through 2018, the release stated.

“With the U.S. boating industry having one of its strongest years in the last decade in 2016, and manufacturers saying, ‘we’re back!’ it’s likely we will reflect on this period as a golden age for our economy and our industry,” NMMA President Thom Dammrich stated in the release. “Economic indicators are working in the industry’s favor – a continuously improving housing market, strong consumer confidence, growing disposable income and consumer spending, and low

interest rates all contribute to a healthy recreational boating market.

“Looking ahead, 2017 is likely to bring new dollar and unit sales gains on par with or better than 2016, and this trend will likely continue through 2018.”

Safety tips for boats and watercraft

Sea-Doo suggest keeping these safety tips in your watercraft or boat at all times and make sure that you and everyone aboard understands them all prior to leaving dock and observes them once out on the water.

• Know and understand all operational features of the craft you are riding – read and follow your operator’s guide.

• Ensure your watercraft is Coast Guard-compliant and has all required equipment.

Securely attach engine cutoff lanyard to your wrist or Personal Flotation Device. Keep attached at all times.

• All watercraft riders must wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD. The operator and passenger(s) of watercraft must wear protective clothing, including: • A wet suit bottom or thick, tightly woven, snugfitting clothing that provides equivalent protection. Thin bike shorts for example would not be appropriate. Severe internal injuries can occur if water is forced into body cavities as a result of falling into water or being near jet thrust nozzle.

• Normal swimwear does not adequately protect against forceful water entry into the lower body opening(s) of males or females.

• Footwear, gloves and goggles/glasses are also recommended. Some type of lightweight, flexible foot protection is recommended. This will help reduce possible injury, should you step on sharp underwater objects.

• Know your vessel’s capacity – don’t overload.

• Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.

Constantly look in all directions for skiers, divers, swimmers and other boats or watercraft.

• Keep a safe distance! Avoid wake jumping, splashing and passing close to any other vessels.

• Know the waters you will be operating in and observe all applicable federal, state and local boating laws.

• Know the weather conditions – tune into your local forecast.

• Stay clear of all restricted areas.

• Obey ALL posted signs, such as “No Wake,” “Right of Way,” “Idle” and other navigation signs.

• Never consume alcohol or drugs before or while operating a watercraft or boat.

• All operators must be of legal age to operate the craft you will be riding.

• BRP recommends a minimum operator of 16 years of age to ride.

• Always operate at a safe speed and be prepared to stop or alter course in emergencies. Ride within your limits, and allow sufficient distance to stop.

• Whether you’re heading in or out, always maintain a slow speed until you’re in a clear area, away from shore.

• Know and understand right-of-way rules.

• Remember you need throttle power to steer.

• Stay in sight of shore, but avoid operating too close to residential and congested areas. Be considerate of others who share the waterways.

• A boating safety course is strongly recommended.

As the Twin Lakes Aquanuts Water Ski Show team enters its 45th year, one of the key ingredients to the success of the nonprofit organization are boats equipped with powerful motors, which help the team produce the acrobatic stunts on Lake Mary.

With a price tag of more than $100,000 for the motors, sponsorship is a crucial element to keep the team sustainable, according to Aquanuts President Cindy Amore.

“We are sponsored by Twin Lakes Marine who supports the power behind our main tow boats with Mercury engines,” Amore said in an email. “Twin Lakes Marine has been a great support to the Aquanuts for decades.”

Twin Lakes Marine, started in 1965, when Peter and Kathleen Renn opened their store has since

passed the company on to current owner Todd Renn.

Todd Renn, noting his deep roots with the Aquanuts, said it is imperative to give back to the Twin Lakes community.

“I was raised here in Twin Lakes and I was an Aquanut myself for over 30 years. My father always chipped in on the water shows and when I took over, I kept it going,” Todd Renn said.

“It helps out the community because it gives something to Twin Lakes for entertainment.”

Renn, who plans to issue 11 motors this year, estimates the total value of the engines at more than $100,000.

In exchange, Twin Lakes Marine has their company logo emblazoned on the side of each Aquanuts towboat, which gives the local business exposure to thousands of Aquanuts fans annually.

“This year, they are getting

11 new motors for their boats.

What it does that I use it as (is) advertising,” he said.

This year, the Aquanuts expect to receive two 115-horsepower, three 150-horsepower and six 250-horsepower engines to attach to their boats.

Upon conclusion of the season, the Aquanuts plan to return the 11 motors to Twin Lakes Marine, which will issue them a new batch for the following year.

Without Twin Lakes Marine, according to Amore, the Aquanuts success, which includes several state and national titles, would not have been possible.

“As a local marina, we appreciate the relationship we have had and certainly attribute our success over the years to their sponsorship,” she said. “In addition to helping us with access to the best in power on the water, they help us with many other facets of our operations.”

Eight years ago, David Maish made a business move that many successful restaurateurs would not have been so willing to make.

At that time, Maish closed his restaurant in Des Plaines, moved his family to Antioch, where he reopened David’s Bistro at 833 Main Street in downtown Antioch.

For most, moving after 12 years in the same place is difficult, but not for Maish.

“It was an easy decision. A family member was seriously ill and wanted us nearby.” It was a decision that he has not regretted,” he said.

The location, along with a diverse menu, is reminiscent of a French bistro.

“It is American food with a French flair,” Maish said.

Diverse options

The menu offers a variety of options, including fine dining appetizers, crab cake calamari and foie gras, to simplified stuffed mushrooms, gorgonzola bites and bruschetta.

Salads too offer a variety of choices including grilled asparagus salad, salad Nicoise, and a special filet steak salad. They also serve flatbreads, or as Maish notes on the menu, “AKA Pizza.”

The fine quality entrees that many customers routinely enjoy, he said, include

the pork tenderloin with spinach, onions Chevre cheese and tomatoes with whipped potatoes and Atlantic Salmon broiled with maple nut sauce, served over spinach and onion fondue and Cassis (currants) puree and sweet potato chips.

Maish, a trained chef with extensive expertise, supervises the kitchen and works with his cooks to produce high quality foods consistently.

Almost everything is made from scratch and so it may take a little extra time to arrive but is worth the extra few minutes.

With soup as one of his specialties, Maish and his daughter, Madison, created a whimsical book and soups easily made at home.

When someone first meets Maish, his outgoing personality is a quality, which stands out.

With a friendly smile, he greets and welcomes people into his restaurant, making them feel at home.

With a focus on making customers feel at home, Maish enhances this through his own paintings, which adorn the walls of his restaurant.

He is a self taught artist who enjoys creating his works and has pursued other hobbies.

“I wanted to learn to play the piano,” said David. “So I taught myself about 25 songs. I now play them at the Bistro.”

Community commitment

As a member of the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, David’s Bistro often works with local merchants for the benefit of the Village of Antioch, including the upcoming 125th anniversary of the village.

The event has not been disclosed.

Noting the PM&L Theatre next door, customers often visit David’s Bistro before they watch a theatrical production.

David’s Bistro suggests to customers heading to the theater to inform their server.

Maish, who always seeks new ideas, has an ideal venue for a variety of events, including anniversary parties, bridal or baby showers, birthdays or business meetings, all of which are held in a private room.

“We have even had a wedding ceremony and reception held here,” he said. “It was a beautiful event.”

However, it is not the space for a large wedding as it only holds about 50 comfortably.
