Jamboree returns for 2022 Burlington gears up to host Memorial Day weekend festival

This year, in addition to the traditional carnival, the Jamboree will feature a full lineup of musical entertainment on the main stage in the Lions Club Beer Tent.

While food historians generally agree the cornmeal-covered hot dogs on a stick became popular at American fairs in the early 1940s, who is actually responsible for the deep-fried delicacy we know as corn dogs?

Generally, the accolades seem to go to the Fletcher brothers, creator of Corn Dogs in Texas, and Jack Karnis – creator of Pronto Pups in Oregon and Minnesota.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark office confirm that Pronto Pups were introduced in 1942; however, this is about the same time Corn Dogs appeared at the Texas State Fair.

Something resembling corn dogs appeared in the 1920s, according to a description of the Krusty Korn Dog Baker (circa 1929). However, these dogs were not deep-fried in hot oil; they were made like waffles in the KrustyKorn Dog Baker machine.

An article from the New York Times states “There are ‘corn dog’ stands...on the docks at St. Petersburg, Florida,” dated Dec. 7, 1941. Presumably this indicates corn-dog type foods were well known in vacation areas. Enjoying thrills at AMUSEMENT PARKS

One of the more beloved ways for thrillseekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country.

Amusement parks typically feature hairraising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone.

Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.

Bumper cars, also called dogems in other English-speaking countries, were the brainchild of inventor Victor Levand, who worked for General Electric.

Carousels are favorites for children

A jammin’ good time!

Last year, the Burlington Jamboree returned to Burlington Memorial Day weekend. Although the new festival lacked the large chocolate related attractions, the downsized event offered more of a small-town carnival feel.

With the kid rides and food vendors being moved to the event entrance, it was clear the Jamboree organizers focused on children and families having a good time. Jamboree attendees paid no entrance fees, purchased wrist bands allowing unlimited rides, played games up and down the midway, and enjoyed some of the best fair food available. This wheel continues to spin to new heights In the late 1800s, few may have imagined that a civil engineer specializing in bridges and other steel designs would help revolutionize not only the skyline of carnivals and fairs, but summertime entertainment as one knew it.

George Washington Ferris, Jr., was not a household name before 1893, but he certainly was afterward. After the Eiffel Tower stretched into the sky for the 1889 World’s Fair, officials in Chicago, which would be hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, were looking for something of a similar magnitude to serve as the hallmark of their event. Organizers announced a competition to design the fair’s centerpiece attraction. Ferris proposed building a 264-foot wheel with suspended carriages to take passengers around for an arial view of the fairgrounds.

But other engineers claimed the wheel would not revolve.

According to Smithsonian, even the exposition’s organizer Daniel Burnham balked at the plans for Ferris’ wheel, which would feature slender rods that would carry people higher than the recently opened Statue of Liberty, claiming they would be too fragile.

Even though Ferris was not the first to envision and build rotating wheels (smaller incarnations called roundabouts were built and featured in Atlantic City), he was the first to take the wheel to this magnitude and financed much of its building. Ferris’ design had 140-foot tall steel towers, with a 45-foot long axle between them.

FAIR FLAVORS

The wheel had a diameter of 250 feet, with 36 wooden cars that could each hold up to 60 riders. It also was lit up by 3,000 of Thomas Edison’s new light bulbs.

The Ferris wheel was a big hit and made an impression on fairgoers. After the fair, the wheel was moved to Lincoln Park, and later became an attraction once more at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Miss. Unfortunately, Ferris went into debt designing and building his vision, and he later died of typhoid fever while embroiled in litigation. His original wheel, which was later demolished, was the only true Ferris design.

But Ferris’s wheel lives on in many forms by ubiquitous copycats, and the name “Ferris Wheel” has become the generic reference for these types of rides. A Ferris wheel is often a staple at amusement parks, local fairs and carnivals and even serves as a permanent sightseeing attraction at attractions around the globe.

Pushing the limits of engineering, today’s Ferris wheels reach dizzying heights. The tallest in the world is the Ain Dubai, slated to open in 2020 just ahead of the Expo 2020 in October.

The observation wheel will be roughly 850 feet tall (250 meters) and will tower over what was once the tallest wheel, the High Roller in Las Vegas, which stands at 520 feet. Other immense observation wheels include the Singapore Flyer, Star of Nanchang (China) and The London Eye.

The famed Ferris wheel lives on in many cities and towns. Once a modern marvel, it is now a customary sight and hallmark of recreational fun.

The Oregon version of the story: “Jack Karnis was the first person to buy a Pronto Pup franchise. Invented in an Oregon lumber camp, the recipe for the batter-coated hot dog was an instant hit when Jack and his wife, Gladys, took them to Chicago. Jack was selling them on a Chicago street when an alert Minnesota entrepreneur saw the line and got in, figuring that people would wait only for something good.”

The Texas Version of the story: “Neil and Carl Fletcher come up with a new fast food product – corny dogs – which they offer to the public for the first time during the summer midway operation.

Since its introduction at the Texas State Fair in Dallas in 1938, the corndog – a hot dog dipped in corn meal then fried up to

Ultimately, does it matter? Corn dogs are just…doggone good.

Out of the frying pan Funnel cakes – another fair favorite – were originally associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch region of the United States.

The popular cakes are made by pouring batter through a funnel into hot oil in a circular pattern, and then deep-frying until the “cake” is golden brown. Then it’s time to pick your favorite topping – powdered sugar, jam, whipped cream or other sweet garnishes.

Funnel cakes resemble fried dough or

“elephant ears,” but dough products are made with risen yeast dough. Funnel cakes are made with an unleavened batter.

Sticky sweet Four men are credited with the creation of the soft, fluffy sweet we know as cotton candy that was originally called “fairy floss.”

Thomas Patton, Josef Delarose Lascaux, John C. Wharton, and William Morrison patented the first electric cotton candy machine in 1899. The machine used centrifugal force to spin and melt sugar through small holes.

In 1904, two Nashville candy makers introduced their invention of how to make cotton candy to the St. Louis

World’s Fair. Due to fair goers’ curiosity, these inventors sold approximately 68,655 boxes of cotton candy for 25 cents a box for a total of $17,163.75.

In 1900, Patton obtained a patent for his invention of making cotton candy.

Using a gas-fired rotating plate to spin caramelizing sugar, he was able to form threads of cotton candy with a fork. He introduced his invention to the public at the Ringley Bros. Circus. Boy was it a hit!

About 50 years later, in 1949, Gold Medal Products launched a cotton candy ma-chine that had a spring base. Like any other invention, this cotton candy maker was more dependable than past machines.

From then on, cotton candy was been a hit and still is today.

According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.

Log flume rides allow thrillseekers to extend their fun into the water. The modern log flume may be traced back to old mill rides that used tracks to guide boats through tunnels and hills. Modern log flumes are much more splash-intensive.

Amusement parks and fairs owe their success to rides and attractions that keep visitors busy for hours.

FAIR FOODS

State and county fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun.

If it can be served on a stick or deepfried, chances are you can find it at a fair.

Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals.

• Funnel cake – Funnel cake and its close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others.

• Corn dogs – Corn dogs are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds.

• French fries – French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can

choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks.

• Cotton candy – What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor?

Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquefied enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that is loved by kids and adults alike.

• Pie – Fair-goers are likely to happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts.

• Corn on the cob – Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Corn on the cob is most popular in corn-producing areas and can be the ideal complement to burgers and other fair foods.

• Anything on a stick – Each year fair vendors experiment with culinary oddities that can be served on a stick. One day it may be skewered pork chops and the next a sleeve of cookies.
