Know what to look for Breast cancer signs and symptoms

Though women may notice various signs and symptoms that could be indicative of breast cancer, breast pain is generally not one of them. The National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. notes that there are various harmless causes of breast pain, such as puberty, menstruation and childbirth, but that breast pain is not commonly a symptom of cancer.

However, in rare instances breast pain may correlate with cancer. For example, breast tumors may cause pain, but cancerous tumors are not generally reported as painful. Though it may not be linked to breast cancer, breast pain should still be reported to a physician immediately, advises the NBCF.

But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year.

A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. While the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. notes that many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screening, women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own.

Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

Changes in how the breast or nipple feels

The NBCF notes that any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. The NBCF also advises women that a milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician.

The NBCF says nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women

It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician.

Learn to make mammograms more comfortable Mammograms remain one of the best methods to detecting breast cancers, giving women the opportunity to start treatment early if cancer is detected. In countries with early access to quality screening and treatment, breast cancer survival rates are now greater than 80 percent.

The organization Mammography Saves Lives says that, since 1990, mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality in the United States by 40 percent. Mammograms usually take around 20 minutes. During a traditional mammogram, a woman’s breast is placed between two plates. One plate holds the breast in place, while the other takes images, and the breasts must be compressed to get clear pictures of breast tissue. Some women find the process to be uncomfortable.

Even though mammograms can be essential parts of preventive healthcare, many women avoid them because of pain and other discomfort. However, women should not put off mammograms because they are worried about discomfort; there are many ways to avoid pain during mammograms that can make the entire experience more comfortable: • Schedule the mammogram for a week after a menstrual period when hormonal swings are less likely to increase breast sensitivity; • Caffeine can make the breasts more tender.

Reducing caffeine consumption for two weeks before the mammogram can help; • Keep your feet and trunk facing forward and simply turn your head at the mammogram machine; • Reduce tension by breathing deeply a few times before the procedure; • Try a pain reliever before the mammogram; and • Ask the mammography center if it has padding, as cushioning between the breasts and the plates of the mammogram machine can reduce pain.

By taking these steps, women may be more comfortable during mammograms, which can play a vital role in the detection and ultimate treatment of breast cancer.

Don’t let the fear of mammogram pain stop you from having the test done. The discomfort can be minimized with a few simple steps.

Demystifying the mammogram Questions about timing, frequency plague women

Women have been told to get a mammogram every year starting at age 40.

Why? What are the downsides to getting checked – or not – each year for breast cancer?

The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend that women get a mammogram each year starting at 40. This will save the most lives. The ACR says women should have a risk assessment by age 30 to see if screening earlier than age 40 is needed.

According to National Cancer Institute records, since mammography became widespread in the 1980s, breast cancer deaths in women are down more than 40 percent. Some say that’s due to improved treatment. Yet the breast cancer death rate in men – who are not screened but receive the same treatments as women – has not improved. So better treatment alone is not enough.

Some organizations say to wait until age 45 or 50 to start mammograms and then do them every other year.

One reason given is “false positives.”

When doctors see something on a mammogram that doesn’t look right, they ask the woman to have another mammogram or ultrasound exam to take a closer look. If that test finds nothing

wrong, some call the result of the first test a “false positive.”

This happens in about 10 percent of women who get a mammogram.

For about two percent of women tested,

the second scan can’t rule out a problem, and they may get a needle biopsy. Less than half of the women who get a biopsy will have cancer (see graphic).

Others say that mammograms find

cancers that won’t ultimately kill you.

They call this “overdiagnosis.”

Studies based on actual women who get tested show that this is rare – perhaps a tiny percentage of cancer are found. Doctors can’t tell which cancers will quickly kill and which won’t. The only way to know is to not treat your cancer and see what happens – a serious risk. Starting mammograms later, or doing them less often, won’t reduce “overdiagnosis.”

A truly overdiagnosed cancer would just be found on the next test. Doctors and women would still have to decide how to treat it. And because nearly all cancers can kill, a delay will give invasive cancer time to get worse.

Most experts agree that more women would die from breast cancer by moving away from routine annual screening starting at age 40.

One published study says that that number could be as high as 13,000 more breast cancer deaths each year.

Ultimately, women 40 and older should discuss with their doctors the benefits and risks of getting – and not getting – a yearly mammogram.

Debunking common myths associated with breast cancer Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. But the fight against cancer is anything but hopeless, as the World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable.

Learning about cancer is one of the best ways for people to protect themselves from this deadly disease.

Researchers continue to learn more about cancer everyday and routinely discover that information once thought to be accurate was actually off-base.

Despite researchers’ best efforts, some myths about cancer still prevail. Some of these myths are about cancer in general, while others refer to specific cancers, including breast cancer. Myths about breast cancer can be as harmful as accurate information is helpful, so learning the truth and debunking those myths can be an important part of women’s preventive approach to breast cancer.

• Myth: Drinking milk increases your risk for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that early studies raised concerns that drinking milk from cows treated with hormones could increase a person’s risk for breast cancer. However, ensuing research failed to find a clear link between the two. In fact, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found no significant association between dairy fluid intake and breast cancer risk.

• Myth: Lumps indicate breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® says that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer.

However, abnormalities or changes in breast tissue should always be brought to the attention of a physician.

• Myth: Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread.

This myth is rooted in the incorrect notion that breast compression while getting a mammogram causes the cancer to spread. However, the NBCF insists that cannot happen. In fact, the National Cancer Institute touts the benefits of mammograms while the ACS recommends women between the ages of 45 and 54 get mammograms every year. • Myth: Women with a family history of breast cancer are likely to develop breast cancer, too. This myth is dangerous because, if taken at face value, it can give women with no family history of breast cancer a false sense of security. However, the NBCF notes that only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that a woman’s risk for breast cancer is higher if she has a first-degree relative, including a mother, sister, daughter, or even a male family member, who have had the disease. But breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their family history.

Potential treatment options after a breast cancer diagnosis A

breast cancer diagnosis is something no one wants to receive. But the burden of breast cancer is substantial. In fact, the World Health Organization notes that breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide.

Thankfully, breast cancer survival rates are high in many parts of the world, particularly in developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan.

While survival rates are lower in developing countries, it is encouraging to know that the average five-year survival rates are as high as 90 percent in some nations. That suggests that the strategies used to successfully fight breast cancer in developed nations may one day prove as effective in developing nations, potentially leading to a sharp decline in global breast cancer deaths.

Upon being diagnosed with breast cancer, patients will be educated about a host of potential treatment options. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that breast cancer is treated in several ways, and the course of treatment a doctor recommends will depend on the kind of breast cancer and how far it has spread.

In addition, according to Breastcancer.org, breast cancer is made up of many different kinds of cancer cells, which often necessitates the use of various types of treatments to get rid of the cancer.

The following are some treatment options doctors may discuss with breast cancer patients.

Surgery Breastcancer.org notes that surgery is typically the first line of attack against breast cancer. The CDC says the goal of surgery is to cut out cancer tissue. Some common breast cancer surgeries include lumpectomy,

in which the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed, and mastectomy, in which all of the breast tissue is removed.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is used to treat various types of cancer and involves the administration of special medicines to shrink or kill existing cancer cells.

Breastcancer.org notes that chemotherapy is sometimes administered prior to surgery in an attempt to shrink the cancer.

Radiation therapy Radiation therapy aims to kill cancer cells using high-energy rays that are similar to X-rays. Sometimes referred to as “radiotherapy,” radiation therapy is overseen by a radiation oncologist who specializes in this type of treatment.

Hormonal therapy Estrogen makes hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers grow, and hormonal therapy, which may be referred to as “anti-estrogen” therapy, aims to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body and block its action on breast cancer cells.

Targeted therapies These therapies, which Breastcancer.org notes are generally less likely than chemotherapy to harm normal, healthy cells, target specific characteristics of the cancer cells. Cancer cells can have many characteristics, so there are various types of targeted therapies.

As a commercial airline pilot with nearly 30 years of experience, Diane Sandoval, 50, is no stranger to making difficult decisions. However, she faced one of her toughest challenges not in the skies, but when she discovered a small lump in her left breast during a self-examination.

Her worst fear was confirmed after a visit to her doctor when she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.

Following an inconclusive mammogram and ultrasound, Sandoval learned she had several small tumors. She underwent a mastectomy to remove the tumors followed by breast reconstruction, ultimately putting her piloting career on pause.

The next big question was whether Diane should receive chemotherapy or not, so her physician recommended a genomic test - the Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score test. This tool has been proven to determine whether chemotherapy will be beneficial for individuals recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.

The test provides a personalized score based on the biology of the patient’s tumor that can help tailor treatment decisions for their individual cancer. Recent results

from the largest breast cancer study ever conducted, called TAILORx, confirmed that the test clearly identified the 70 percent of women with early-stage breast cancer who receive no benefit from chemotherapy, as well as the remaining 30 percent of women for whom chemotherapy can be life-saving.

Sandoval is one of the nearly 1 million women who has put chemotherapy to the test with this genomic test. Her Recurrence Score result was 13, which confirmed that her risk of experiencing a breast cancer recurrence was low and she would not benefit from chemotherapy. As a result, Sandoval felt confident that she could forgo chemotherapy and its associated harsh side effects. Subsequently, she was able to resume her career as a pilot and her active lifestyle.

She recently joined a campaign called “Put Chemo to the Test” to raise awareness of the Oncotype DX test and encourage women recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer to ask their doctor to order it before finalizing their treatment plan.

“I hope to help women with earlystage breast cancer better understand their

treatment options by raising awareness of this test and how it can determine whether they are part of the majority of patients who may be spared chemotherapy and its well-known side effects or are among the important minority of patients who could receive life-saving benefit from chemotherapy,” Sandoval said.

She recommends that women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, or anyone with a friend or family member facing a breast cancer diagnosis, check out ChemoYesorNo.org to learn more about her story and obtain patient-friendly resources to determine if the test can help guide their treatment decision.

Like Sandoval, one in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. The treatment of invasive breast cancer should be personalized because what is best for one woman may not be right for another.

Managing the costs of fighting cancer Cancer takes a toll on people’s bodies and minds and even the people around them. Upon being diagnosed with cancer, people understandably focus on the toll the disease may take. While the physical and mental toll can be considerable, the financial toll can be significant as well.

AARP says that the average costs for cancer treatment are around $150,000. And while good insurance plans may cover the majority of those costs, patients may still face a bill of $4,000 or more in copays, deductibles and other expenses.

Cancer also may impact a person’s ability to work, further affecting their financial security.

According to studies from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, cancer patients are 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy than healthy people.

People diagnosed with cancer and their families have a lot on their plates. The following are some tips to help such people handle the financial toll that cancer can take.

• Speak with the oncologist to find out what is involved in the proposed treatment plan and how long the treatment will run. This may make it easier to plan for upcoming expenses.

• Consult with insurance companies, if applicable, to see which types of treatments will be covered and at what rate. Certain insurance policies may cover all of the treatment. Others may require you meet a deductible, and then there may be coinsurance requirements that must be met.

• Talk to a case worker to see if there are any programs available that help pay for treatment. The American Cancer Society says payment plans or financial assistance may be available.

• Be honest with doctors about your financial situation to see if treatments can be spaced out to help budget for care without affecting prognosis.

• Many pharmaceutical companies offer assistance to individuals having trouble paying for their prescriptions. There also may be vouchers and discounts available for prescriptions if one is willing to do a little research.

• Certain charitable grants and coverage for life and travel expenses are available through nonprofit organizations. A patient also can contact CancerCare, a service offering counseling, support groups and financial assistance to those who need help, or other similar companies for more help.

ancer is the second leading cause of death across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, cancer was responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. That statistic highlights just how serious a threat cancer can be.

While cancer claims the lives of millions of people each year, a cancer diagnosis is most definitely not a death sentence. In fact, five-year survival rates for various cancers detected in their early stages are very high.

For example, the organization Cancer Research UK notes that more than nine in 10 bowel cancer patients will survive the disease for more than five years if it’s diagnosed at the earliest stage. Five-year survival rates are similarly high among patients diagnosed with early stage breast and ovarian cancer.

Men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer will work with various healthcare professionals as they begin and advance through treatment. The American Cancer Society notes that the following are some healthcare professionals who may form a cancer care team: • Anesthesiologists – A professional who administer drugs or other agents, such as gasses, that can put patients into a deep sleep or alleviate pain. Anesthesiologists typically perform these tasks during surgical procedures.

• Case manager – Case managers coordinate patients’ care throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Case managers work in a liaison-type role between patients and their insurance companies.

• Clinical nurse specialist – A clinical nurse specialist, or CNS, is a highly educated individual who works closely with the entire cancer care team. These professionals have advanced training and clinical experience in a certain area of medical and nursing practice.

• Discharge coordinator – Discharge coordinators are often nurses or social workers who help make sure patients have what they need to continue their recovery when they leave the hospital.

• Dosimetrist – A specially trained and certified individual who calculates and plans the correct dose of radiation therapy for cancer treatment.

• Medical oncologist – A doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer with chemotherapy and other drugs.

• Nurse practitioner – A nurse practitioner, or NP, may be referred to as an advanced practice registered nurse.

These professionals have a master’s or doctoral degree and special certification and work closely with doctors, helping to diagnose and manage care.

• Oncologist – A doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer.

• Palliative care specialists or team – A group of healthcare professionals that may include doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others, who work together to help patients manage symptoms such as pain, nausea or fatigue.

• Pathologist – A doctor who specializes in diagnosing and classifying diseases through lab tests and examining tissues and cells with a microscope.
