Burlington High School honors summa cum laude graduates Burlington High School for the Class of 2022 dropped the traditional class rank system for recognizing academic achievement in favor of the laude system. The laude system is designed to recognize students for the rigor of their academic program in addition to their success in that program, according to Principal Eric Burling. It is a point-based system that factors in points for the advanced-level courses taken and the cumulative grade point average to create a laude score. Students who achieve the highest scores are recognized as summa cum laude graduates, based on a predetermined point range. So instead of the traditional valedictorian and salutatorian, Burlington High School is recognizing it’s 18 summa cum laude students in the Class of 2022. Brief profiles of the summa cum laude honorees follow:
Mattea Chamberlin Parent: Keely Chamberlin College plans: Attending Carroll University: Double Major in Biology and Psychology High school achievements: NHS, Summa Cum Laude, Honor Roll, Taken AP and Honors Classes, EMT certificate, CNA certificate Future ambitions: I would like to enlist in the Navy after my undergrad, but the end goal is to be a pediatric oncologist.
Jake Follis Parents: Tom and Jenny Follis College plans: University of Alabama and double majoring in Finance and Economics. I am also thinking about potentially pursuing an MBA down the road. High School achievements: Varsity Football Captain, National Commended Merit Scholar, National AP Scholar with Distinction and Southern Lakes Conference Academic Excellence Winner Future ambitions: I would like to be a personal financial advisor like my dad.
Hailey Hotvedt Parents: Leslie and John Hotvedt College plans: Viterbo University majoring in Elementary Education and dancing on the competitive dance team! High school achievements: Summa Cum Laude graduate, National Honor Society Treasurer, Student Government Co-President, Captain of the Burlington Dance Team, All State Dance Team Soloist, Burlington High School Dance Team MVP and
Sportsmanship Award for the 2021-2022 Dance season. Future ambitions: I am looking forward to a teaching career and hopefully will have the opportunity to continue to work with and coach young dancers.
Trishelle Iñiguez Parents: Rick and Lisa Iniguez College plans: Attending the University of WisconsinMadison High school achievements: Southern Lakes Conference Academic Excellence Winner, National Honor Society Member, AP Scholar, 4 Year Varsity Athlete Future ambitions: hope to graduate with a degree in biology from UW-Madison and continue on with my education to either a Med-School or Vet-School.

Kolton Krueger Parents: Kevin and Jodi Krueger College plans: I have no current commitments or degree in mind, but will make that decision post-military graduation. High school achievements: Four years varsity boys soccer; three years track and field; two years on the shooting team; National Honors Society; second team all conference for boys soccer. Future ambitions: Join the Air Force in aerospace propulsion and then attend secondary schooling.
Megan LaRose Parents: Scott and Ellen LaRose College plans: Majoring in Animal Science with a Pre-Vet track at Iowa State University. High school achievements: I am very proud of my involvement on both the BCOOP Girls Swimming team as a varsity swimmer and Senior captain, as well as the BHS Shooting team as a state champion. I also have been very involved in the leadership program here at BHS called DRIVEN as well as NHS. 4-H has also been a big impact on me throughout high school, as I have held positions such as our County Junior Leaders Association President and Racine County 4-H Outstanding Teen. Future ambitions: As of right now, I plan on becoming a large animal veterinarian. Of course, my plans could certainly change, but caring for animals is what I have a passion for and it is what I currently wish to do in the future.

MEET CATHOLIC CENTRAL'S TOP STUDENTS Valedictorian Kaleigh Lynch eyes a career in nursing Catholic Central High School Valedictorian Kaleigh Lynch provided a window into her life and ambitions by answering the following questions at the request of the Standard Press. Please list your high school activities and achievements? Throughout high school I’ve participated in multiple clubs, sports, and volunteer opportunities. Some of the clubs I’ve participated in include: National Honor Society, Key Club, Faith in Action Team, Model United Nations, and Catholic Central Student Ambassadors. I also participated in athletics including cross country, track, soccer, and competitive dance outside of school. My greatest high school accomplishment, aside from being named valedictorian, is going to cross country state three times with my team. On top of being involved in many clubs and sports, I’ve done a large amount of volunteer work including my mission trip to Savannah, Georgia. Which achievements are you most proud of and why? My greatest achievement would
definitely be the honor of being named valedictorian of the class of 2022. From the moment I learned what a valedictorian was freshman year, I knew that it was something I would work towards – though I would have tried my hardest in school either way. This accomplishment is even more special knowing that I achieved it while balancing the time commitments of extracurriculars. It allowed me to develop lifelong time management skills that I hope will help me excel in my future plans. How did you manage to balance academics with your other activities? Although it can at times be hard to balance my academics with other activities, I find that the busier I am outside of school, the better I perform in school. Salutatorian Vos wants to build a career in business Makayla Vos has been named the Salutatorian for the Class of 2022 at Catholic Central High School. She provided the following responses regarding her high school achievements and future ambitions at the request of the Standard Press. Please list your high school activities and achievements. • Class of 2022 Salutatorian • Varsity volleyball all four years. Won state my freshman and junior year, and took second my sophomore year; got first team all conference, second team all county and honorable mention all state my senior year. • Varsity softball for three years • President of the National Honor Society (senior year) • Member of the National Honor Society (junior year) • Key Club (all four years) – a club dedicated to serving the community. • Student Ambassador (sophomoresenior years) – represented Catholic Central when welcoming new students and planning assimilation activities. • Student Council (all four years) • Student Council Class Representative (junior and senior years) • Faith In Action Team for 3 years • Catholic Central’s Leadership Group my senior year – it was organized to lead the school and serve as a reminder of the values our school lives by. We combatted bullying, led group discussions, served as people to talk to if you ever needed help, and more • Tutored students in my school with math • Invited to the Scholars Breakfast both available years, for students with a cumulative GPA of a 4.0 or higher Which achievements are you most proud of and why? I am definitely most proud of the fact that I am salutatorian. It makes all the hard work and energy put into my four years of high school so much more worth it. I’m also very proud of my volleyball team and personal athletic achievements. Being
able to play on a team that won two state championships, as well as getting second place one year and many personal awards my senior year, is something I’ll truly never forget. It was such an amazing experience and proved the power of hard work and dedication. Lastly, I’m very proud that I was selected to be my school’s National Honor Society President. It was a great honor and I loved getting the opportunity to lead a club dedicated to such amazing objectives. How did you manage to balance academics with your other activities? Organization and time management is key. I have always been told I’m a “perfectionist” from a young age, so I’ve always kept a very detailed planner and calendar. This helped ensure that I stayed on top of my work and made it to everything on time. By being organized and strengthening my time management skills, I was able to balance my academics and all the other activities I participated in very well. Balancing it all may have cost me quite a few hours of sleep, but in the end, it was all worth it so I could do well in and outside of school! What are your plans beyond high school? Come this fall, I will be attending the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. I intend to double major in business management and marketing, and earn at least a bachelor’s degree in business. I also want to experience other uniquely amazing cultures and travel to many countries around the world. Why did you select that particular college or university? Not only is UW-La Crosse a great school, but I loved the atmosphere on campus there. I got the “feeling” people talk about when I visited it for the first time, so it made sense why I ended up deciding to go there.
