Van Patten heading to Washington BHS salutatorian graduates a year early
Tiedt formed lasting bonds at BHS

Malik Tiedt is one of two valedictorians for the Burlington High School Class of 2019. Tiedt, who earned a 4.33 grade point average, took multiple Advanced Placement classes and served Malik Tiedt several leadership posts during his tenure at BHS. Heading to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tiedt plans to major in nutritional research with a double minor in medical anthropology and biology. He said that UNC felt like a natural fit after visiting the campus in April. “UNC is the number two school of public health in the nation. I know they would offer me really good study abroad opportunities and research opportunities I can take advantage of,” he said. After his visit, he said that what truly attracted him to the campus and life in the area was how much greener the university is. “I love the campus… very green, and very clean which I like,” he said. As a student who enjoyed traveling, Tiedt touched on one of his fondest memories during his four years at BHS – a study abroad trip he took to Panama. For two weeks in Panama last summer, Tiedt studed the Spanish language and Latin American culture. He called his time there “a unique experience.” He added that going to Panama let him see the ocean for the first time in his life
and to be fully immersed in a culture other than his own, which taught him a lot about himself. “That was a really cool thing, not only to experience individually, but also go through with kids I have been in Spanish class all these years,” he said. Tiedt, meanwhile, also participated in various athletics, earning recognition at a Wisconsin Interscholastic Association Scholar athlete alongside 31 other students from across the state. Advanced Placement courses on Tiedt’s resumé include AP Calculus, AP English, AP Psychology, AP Chemistry, AP Biology and AP Art. Tiedt held the presidency positions for the National Honor Society and Art Club, while also being involved with student government, Future Business Leaders of America, and Key Club, a public service volunteer group. Athletically, Tiedt played tennis and volleyball all four years. While he looks to the future, including his departure from Burlington, Tiedt said he will miss the community he was born and raised in along with the people he has met through his journey. Tiedt and his co-valedictorian, Tyler Van Patten, said that the people they’ve met will leave lasting memories that will linger throughout their lives. “I’ll definitely miss the friends and the people that I’ve made and met,” he said. “It’s really a community full of service and people who are dedicated to see you succeed. I’ll miss all of the teachers, and the coaches, friends and classmates that have encouraged me to do the best that I can."

As one of two valedictorians for the Burlington High School class of 2019, Tyler Van Patten looks forward to life after high school, where he took several Advanced Tyler Van Patten Placement courses and participated in multiple activities. Van Patten, who will attend Georgetown University in Washington, plans to major in political economy with a minor in entrepreneurship. “One thing that really attracted me to Georgetown was the location. It’s located in central Washington D.C. and I really like that it’s in a big city, and the fact that it’s in our nation’s capital is a big plus” he said. In April, when Van Patten visited Georgetown, he said he immediately fell in love with the campus because it is located in the heart of the city “while also being its own secluded, little enclave.” Through his four years at BHS, Van Patten served as Student Council president, vice president of Future Business Leaders of America, vice president for National Honor Society and captain for the academic decathlon team. The academic decathlon squad competed at the state level this
March for the first time in several years. Additionally, he also participated on the trap shooting team. Academically, Van Patten excelled, taking on Advanced Placement Calculus, AP English, AP Psychology, and AP Government, finishing up his exams in May. One of Van Patten’s favorite memories from his high school academic career is when his FBLA team competed and won at state, earning them a spot in nationals. “We made it to nationals in Baltimore over the summer, so I got to spend a week with two of my best friend’s in a far-away city… we were in the entrepreneurship category” he said. “It was a good time.” Speaking on the memories he made during his time in Burlington, Van Patten thought about what he would miss most about his hometown. “(Burlington) is definitely a small-town kind of vibe, and I’ve really enjoyed that. You meet people and you know them. It’s a nice interconnected community” he said. Van Patten touched on those connections further by adding that both he and Malik Tiedt, BHS’s other valedictorian for the 2019 graduating class, have known each other since kindergarten at St. John’s Lutheran school. “We’ve both been through it all, and even into high school, the small-town feel is reflected in our own classes. It will be weird leaving that” added Van Patten.
