Burlington High School’s Mariana Beltran Hernandez is one of two salutatorians for the 2018 graduating class.

She plans to attend Fordham Mariana Beltran University in New Hernandez York City in the fall for a double major in international studies and Spanish.

She is part of the BHS Key Club on the district level, served as vice president of the National Honor Society, and was involved in DRIVEN and student government at BHS. Hernandez also helped establish the Danish Exchange program at the school.

“One of my highlights was going to Denmark last year,” she said. “I was the youngest person on that committee. It was really cool to see all the hard work we put in (and) all that time pay off in See BELTRAN HERNANDEZ, Page 9

Savannah Donegan, one of two salutatorians at Burlington High School for 2018, plans to attend the University of WisconsinMadison in the Savannah Donegan fall in hopes of pursuing a dual major in biology and economics.

Donegan has been a part of the varsity girl’s tennis team, forensics team, National Honor Society, and as a member of the B*JAZZled Show Choir.

In the classroom, Donegan took eight different Advanced Placement courses, including geography, macroand microeconomics, two calculus courses, psychology, European history, and English literature. Her performance earned her the title of AP Scholar with Distinction.

“I’ve gotten really close to a couple of my teachers and I know I’m going to continue to talk to them after high school, but I’m definitely going to miss having that support system that I have been able to develop here,” she said.

A school trip to the Grand Canyon helped Beltran Hernandez develop a closer bond with teachers she never knew before.

She said she “got to experience something so extraordinary” with everyone on the trip.

Beltran Hernandez also shared that one of her goals since freshman year was to be top of her class as either the valedictorian or salutatorian. She said she wants to talk about her high school experience in her speech while also trying to reflect the experience of her entire graduating class.

“I want everyone to be able to look at this speech and see it as a good summary of their high school life – a good way to close it out,” she said

Donegan said she would miss her teachers and friends most of all.

However, she’s looking forward to college: “I’m just excited to be in college with people who are interested in big ideas.”

Donegan said she would like to attend graduate school to become an emergency room doctor and eventually become involved in politics.

Since Donegan is graduating early –

she started out as a member of the Class of 2019 – she said in her speech that she will talk about the way the Class of 2018 welcomed her.

“I’ll probably talk about how the class … has always been there for me, helped me through everything even though I was younger than them, and how they’ve just been a really great influence on me and how I know they’re going to do really great things from that,” she said.

“Learning to accept the adversity that we face in all the issues that we’re going to face going through life, just as have through high school,” Robson said.

She added “It’s kind of like don’t forget your high school years but also know that you have everything else still ahead of you.”
