LEADERSHIP REPORTS 2024 has been a celebration of the transformative power of leadership at all levels, with a significant focus on fostering student agency and developing the expertise of our staff.

Our staff have grown in their capacities, collaborating to offer our students an intentional, well-rounded curriculum. They have initiated exciting experiential learning opportunities for students to be immersed in their learning - whether it be a day trip in nature to test water quality for Science, or visiting Melbourne’s popular street art locations for their Art classes.

The growing agency and leadership demonstrated by our students has been a stand out this year. They embraced opportunities to lead with initiative and passion, making thoughtful contributions to both the school and wider community. From organising cultural events, to fundraising for local charities, our students have shown remarkable creativity and commitment to making a difference.

As we reflect on these milestones, we recognise that every act of leadership - big or small - contributes to the growth of our school’s vibrant community.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Congratulations to the students, staff, and families of Southern Cross Grammar on a remarkable year of achievements and growth.

This year, SCG students have seized opportunities that have taken them from snow-covered tracks in Tasmania and the breathtaking depths of the Great Barrier Reef to the dynamic streets of Tokyo. Closer to home, they have built skills and confidence through day camps on SCG Fields, learned bush cooking on their first overnight camps, and participated in experiences that foster curiosity and a love of learning.

Academic success has been a defining feature of the year, with outstanding results reflecting the dedication of students and staff alike. On the sporting field, teams have worked hard to achieve regional and state victories in athletics, futsal, and beyond, demonstrating the strength of determination and collaboration.

Cultural celebrations have added depth and vibrancy to school life. Holi, Eid, Orthodox Easter, and Christmas picnics have brought the community together to celebrate diversity, creating moments of joy and connection. These events embody the spirit of SCG, where “we are one, but we are many,” united in purpose and enriched by our collective strengths.

This year also saw significant enhancements to school facilities. The new Primary playground is a highlight, transforming students’ 3D-printed designs from last year into a lively and creative space for play and exploration. It serves as a reminder of the innovation and collaboration that underpin SCG’s approach to growth.

PRIMARY As we reflect on another wonderful year at Southern Cross Grammar, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the many achievements and milestones reached in our Primary School.

From Foundation to Year 6, our students have embraced a range of opportunities that have allowed them to grow academically, socially, and emotionally, supported by a nurturing community that values connection and excellence.

This year saw the successful introduction of our Bright Start program, designed to foster positive relationships, build a strong sense of belonging, and set the tone for a productive day of learning. The program has provided students with the chance to connect with their peers and teachers in meaningful ways, strengthening our culture of care and mutual respect across the Primary School.

The launch of SCG Active has been another highlight. This initiative created opportunities for staff and students to connect beyond the classroom, participating together in engaging activities that foster teamwork, resilience, and creativity. Whether through sports, games, or collaborative challenges, SCG Active has reinforced the importance of holistic development and community.

Inquiry learning has continued to be a catalyst for deep thinking, curiosity, and action. Our students have been encouraged to think about their thinking, ask meaningful questions, seek answers, and take purposeful action. This approach has empowered them to see themselves as capable, curious learners who can make a difference in their world.

Our English and Mathematics programs remain a source of great pride. Through a combination of direct explicit instruction, creative teaching strategies, and targeted support, students have developed foundational skills and achieved significant milestones. The success of our programs is reflected in the confidence and enthusiasm our students bring to their learning every day.

Leadership development is an important focus at SCG, and this year our students have risen to the occasion. The Year 5 Buddy Program has provided opportunities for our older students to mentor and support younger peers, while our Year 6 leaders have proudly represented the school in various capacities, embodying the values of responsibility, service, and teamwork. Our Class Representatives have also played a key role in fostering collaboration and communication within our community.

Our sense of community has been strengthened through many joyful celebrations this year, including Harmony Week, Book Week, assemblies, open classrooms, and after-school events. These occasions have brought families, students, and staff together to celebrate diversity, creativity, and the achievements of our students.

PRIMARY LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

Beyond the classroom, our students have engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities, including after-school programs, soirees, and opportunities to participate in the Science Talent Search and Maths Talent Quest. These experiences have allowed students to explore their passions, develop new skills, and showcase their talents.

As we look ahead to next year, I am excited about our plans to strengthen our commitment to connection and further enhance our teaching and learning programs. We are thrilled to welcome new leadership positions to our Primary School team, including Lisa Patten as Head of Mathematics, Vicky Temuskos as Head of English, Lauren Hedditch as Head of Foundation to Year 2, and Damien Morrison as Head of Years 3 to 6. Their expertise will enrich our programs and inspire both staff and students to reach new heights.

SECONDARY The 2024 academic year at Southern Cross Grammar’s Secondary School has been a remarkable showcase of student initiative, confidence, and growing expertise across diverse areas of interest.

Through collaboration among students, staff, families, and the wider community, this year has been a celebration of personal and collective achievements, with countless opportunities seized and successes earned.

In the performing arts, the year sparkled with creativity and dedication. The school musical production, The Addams Family, captivated audiences and highlighted the incredible talent and hard work of our students, both on stage and behind the scenes. The Secondary School’s musical excellence continued with the Generations in Jazz festival and a wide array of events, including Advanced Strings, the Showcase Concert, and the Twilight Concert, each reinforcing the vibrancy of our music program.

Sports have been another shining highlight, with our Futsal team reaching the national tournament in Brisbane—a milestone of determination and teamwork. House events, carnivals, and inter-school competitions engaged students across all year levels, while programs like Outdoor Education, Year 7 and 8 camps, and the SCG Active program demonstrated a commitment to both physical activity and personal growth.

Academically, the Secondary School maintained its tradition of excellence, with students excelling in pursuits such as the Big Science Competition, the Australian Maths Competition, and the VCE subject expos. Unique learning experiences, such as the Get Into Genes biotechnology excursion, Year 8 Medieval Day, and Year 12 Physics at Luna Park, brought subjects to life in innovative ways.

This year also offered unforgettable experiences outside the classroom. Year 9 students embraced adventure and learning during trips to the Whitsundays and Tasmania, strengthening bonds and building resilience through real-world exploration.

The Secondary School also expanded its global connections with a cultural and educational tour to Japan, where students immersed themselves in a rich tapestry of history, tradition, and innovation. Cultural and community events, including Harmony Day, the Holi Festival, and Iftar Dinner, enriched the school’s inclusive ethos, bringing families together to celebrate the richness of our diversity. Parent webinars and workshops on topics like online safety and digital wellbeing highlighted the school’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships with families, ensuring students are supported in all aspects of their development.

As we reflect on 2024, it is clear that the strength of our Secondary School lies not only in its achievements but also in its thriving culture of collaboration, opportunity, and growth. Together, we’ve built a year of enduring memories and accomplishments that will inspire even greater aspirations for the future.

FOUNDATION TO YEAR 2 It has been a year of growth and discovery for our Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students. From starting school and forming new friendships, to exploring exciting learning concepts, it has been a year filled with wonder, curiosity and joy!

As we reflect on this incredible year, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Our little learners have grown and developed in so many ways, both academically and socially. From exploring the wonders of The Zoo to exploring the landscape of SCG Fields, they have embarked on countless adventures that have ignited their curiosity and imagination. When asked, ZoeAnne in Year 1 described her experience at SCG Fields, “I loved being in nature at SCG Fields, I don’t get to be in nature all the time so it was so good. It was a great experience!”

One of the highlights of the year was our 100 Days of Foundation celebration.

Watching our students dressed in creative costumes representing “100 of something” was a heart-warming experience. It was a testament to their unique personalities and their ability to think outside the box. When reflecting, Tej in Foundation said that “I loved the 50 Days and 100 Days of school parties because I got to dress up, but the 100 Days was better than the 50!”.

LAUREN HEDDITCH – COORDINATOR F-2

The opening of our new playground was another joyous occasion. The playground has provided a thrilling and exciting environment for our students to play, learn, and connect with one another. It has been wonderful to see their excitement and enthusiasm as they explore the various play structures and engage in imaginative play.

Throughout the year, I have been inspired by our students’ eagerness to learn and their positive attitudes. They have approached each challenge with enthusiasm and resilience, and their progress has been truly remarkable. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their journey and to have witnessed their growth firsthand.

As we look ahead to the next year, I am excited to see what our students will achieve. Our Year 2 students will move from Junior Primary to Upper Primary.

Ivy in Year 2 said “I feel fine going into Year 3. I am most looking forward to going to camp because I have heard that there are really fun activities!”.

I am confident that F-2 students will continue to thrive and reach new heights in 2025.

YEARS 3 AND 4 This year has been a remarkable journey of growth, curiosity, and discovery for our Year 3 and 4 students. They have embraced new challenges with enthusiasm, building on their foundational skills and exploring a wide range of subjects that have inspired creativity and critical thinking.

From hands-on projects to collaborative learning experiences, they have deepened their understanding of core concepts, while developing resilience, teamwork, and independence. It has been a year filled with memorable moments, meaningful accomplishments, and the excitement of learning that will carry them forward into the future.

Science has been a key focus for our Inquiry units this year, with Year 3 students learning about rocks, living things, and space. Students visited the Melbourne Aquarium and had Pete the Rock Scientist come in to share his expertise with them. In Year 4, topics covered were food chains, and the water cycle. Students travelled to the Werribee Water Treatment Plant to find out more information about what happens to the water that goes down our drains. This unit culminated in students sharing their learning with a science fair in which they conducted experiments to demonstrate their understanding of the water cycle.

LISA PATTEN – COORDINATOR YEARS 3-4

This year, both Year 3 and Year 4 students embarked on exciting outdoor adventures that helped them grow in confidence and independence. Year 3 attended their first overnight camp at Lady Northcote Discovery Camp, where they engaged in team-building activities, explored nature, and learned new skills in a fun and supportive environment. Meanwhile, the Year 4s ventured to Anglesea Discovery Camp, where they challenged themselves with coastal activities, including estuary exploration and thrilling outdoor experiences.

Both camps provided incredible opportunities for personal growth, friendshipbuilding, and lasting memories, leaving students inspired and eager for new challenges ahead.

In the inaugural year of our SCG Active program, students participated in a dynamic range of activities that promoted fitness, teamwork, and fun. From improving their swimming techniques to expressing themselves through energetic dance routines, students embraced the opportunity to stay active and develop new skills. The futsal sessions added a competitive edge, allowing students to sharpen their coordination and teamwork on the field. Kelly Sports rounded out the program with a variety of engaging physical activities, ensuring everyone had a chance to participate, grow, and enjoy the benefits of staying active.

YEARS 5 AND 6 As we reflect on an incredible year in Year 5 and Year 6, it’s clear that our students have truly embraced learning through collaboration and inquiry.

The Year 6s engaged deeply in various topics, exploring the three levels of government, the solar system, the Olympics, and technology. Meanwhile, the Year 5s delved into their own exciting topics: belonging, sustainability, animal adaptations, and financial planning. These collaborative tasks not only fostered teamwork but also ignited a passion for learning, as students shared ideas and supported one another in their discoveries.

In Mathematics, we focused on developing our problem-solving abilities by applying learned strategies to real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach allowed students to build confidence in their skills and work together to tackle challenges. In English, we had a fantastic time with our Book Club and enjoyed reading our whole class texts. The students showcased their creativity by publishing a variety of written pieces, demonstrating their growth as confident and capable writers.

DAMIEN MORRISON – COORDINATOR YEARS 5-6

This year, the Year 6 students stepped into their roles as leaders of the Primary School with enthusiasm and initiative. They organised fundraisers that brought our school community together, and their planning of Olympic-themed activities engaged all Primary students in spirited competition and fun. It was inspiring to see the leadership potential in our Year 5 students as they participated in a leadership unit, preparing themselves to take on greater responsibilities in the coming years.

The Summit Camp for Year 5 and Camp Toolangi for Year 6 were definite highlights of the year. Both camps encouraged students to set personal goals and stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones. Whether it was soaring down the flying fox, scaling rock climbing walls, or simply enjoying time with friends around the campfire, the memories created during these adventures will last a lifetime.

As we wrap up this school year, we celebrate not only the achievements of our students but also the strong sense of community fostered within our Year 5 and Year 6 classes. Here’s to another wonderful year of learning, growth, and friendship!

YEAR 7 Year 7 has proven to be a year characterised by engaging challenges, offering students a diverse array of experiences that foster their development at Southern Cross Grammar.

With a sustained emphasis on the transition from Primary to Secondary School, students focused on establishing routines in Homeroom that would position them for success throughout their Secondary education.

Throughout the year, students cultivated valuable leadership skills, both formally through applications for the Middle School Student Representative Council, and informally by volunteering to support school events, such as the Year 12 Induction Evening. They were encouraged to engage in numerous opportunities, including House events, Interschool Sports, SCG Active, and various lunchtime and after-school clubs. Most notably, the popular Dungeons and Dragons Club was a cohort favourite. Students also participated in a diverse range of cultural celebrations which aimed to increase inclusivity and respectful relationships within our school community. The Year 7 cohort also benefited from initiatives aimed at supporting their academic pursuits and wellbeing, such as Elephant Ed, Elevate Educate, Skodel, The Resilience Project, and Toolbox Education.

LAUREN SMITH – HEAD OF YEAR 7

A significant highlight of the year was the Year 7 camp at Point Leo, where students challenged themselves and built resilience. For many, this was their first experience of sleeping away from home, cooking on a Trangia, or standing up on a surfboard. This experience allowed students to forge meaningful connections with their peers and staff, enhancing their learning outside the traditional classroom setting.

The 2024 school year was notably busy for our Year 7 students. Many represented the school in Interschool Sports and participated actively in district events for swimming, athletics, and cross country. There was also notable representation in the Select Entry Music program, and we also had a number of talented Year 7 performers involved in the cast and crew of the successful The Addams Family production.

I commend our Year 7 students for an exemplary first year of Secondary school.

They have demonstrated genuine care for one another, a keen interest in the rich opportunities available at Southern Cross Grammar, and an admirable commitment to achieving their personal best. It has been a privilege to lead such an inquisitive and adaptable cohort, and I wish them continued success as they progress into Year 8.

YEARS 8 AND 9 The Year 8 and 9 students of 2024 have left an indelible mark on our school community with their energy, talents, and unbreakable spirit.

This cohort has truly thrived, standing out for their ability to collaborate seamlessly, creating a vibrant and supportive environment. Their dedication and teamwork have not only fostered a positive culture but have also raised the bar for what it means to contribute to the school’s collective success.

Through their shared commitment, they have shown how unity and support can transform challenges into remarkable achievements. With respect, compassion, and a strong desire to make a difference, these young leaders have become role models for us all.

As SCG navigated significant changes this year, including new staff and evolving structures, our students faced these transitions with remarkable adaptability. Instead of viewing change as a disruption, they embraced it as an opportunity for growth. Their resilience and openness to innovation exemplified their determination to maintain personal and collective success.

MELISSA BLACKLOCK – HEAD OF YEAR 8

This year was filled with exciting opportunities for students to showcase their talents and push their boundaries. They enthusiastically participated in athletics, swimming, cross country, and interschool sporting competitions, demonstrating their school pride and sportsmanship. On stage, The Addams Family Musical was a standout success, with many students shining in both the cast and crew. Musical soirees, competitions, and performances further highlighted the incredible artistic abilities within the cohort.

Beyond performances and sports, students broadened their knowledge and perspectives through a variety of enriching experiences. Excursions for Chinese, Forensics, Earth Science, Outdoor Education camp, and the Humanities Medieval incursion offered hands-on learning opportunities that deepened their understanding. Programs such as Elephant Ed, Elevate Education, and Toolbox Ed provided valuable skills and insights, equipping students with tools for personal development and wellbeing.

A significant milestone this year was the opportunity for students to explore the newly opened SCG Fields site. This new facility has breathed fresh life into our school’s learning environment, offering students exciting new spaces for both study and recreation.

DEAN GALEA – HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

One of the key aspects of this year was the contribution of the Student Representative Council (SRC) Leaders, whose leadership, insights, and initiatives greatly enriched the school experience for their peers. Here’s what one of our leaders had to say about 2024: “2024 has been such an exciting year for SRC members! It’s hard to select just a few, but my personal highlights were participating in the Melton Youth Forum and being captain of the SCG Girls Futsal team. As part of the Youth Forum myself and my peers had the opportunity to speak on behalf of our school and share our voice, and as Captain of the Futsal team I helped lead the team to winning several competitions. We can’t wait to represent SCG in Brisbane later this year!”

The SCG Active program also sparked excitement across the school, where our Year 8 and 9 students eagerly participated in events that promoted camaraderie and healthy competition. Their strong involvement reflects their dedication to school values and their love for teamwork, which shone brightly in interschool tournaments.

The adventure-filled experiences this year were no less impressive. Our Year 8 students fearlessly took on the slopes of Mount Buller, navigating the challenges of snow sports with determination and joy. Their ability to embrace the cold, bumps, and newfound independence was inspiring. Meanwhile, the Year 9 cohort experienced the serene beauty of the Whitsundays and Tasmania, enjoying sun-soaked adventures that blended exploration with relaxation. These unique experiences not only deepened their friendships but also created lasting memories, highlighting the breadth of opportunities available to them.

The Year 8 and 9 students of 2024 should feel immense pride. Their kindness, compassion, and sense of community have been at the heart of their year, fostering a sense of belonging that has made SCG a better place. As they continue to grow, they are sure to bring these exceptional qualities with them, carrying the potential to create positive change both within and beyond our school community.

YEARS 10 AND 11 The Year 10 and 11 cohorts showcased integrity, maturity, kindness, and resilience, earning recognition for their outstanding efforts.

The Year 10 and 11 students made a lasting impact this year, demonstrating their exceptional qualities and strong dedication to the SCG community. As they moved into the Senior Years and VCE, their enthusiastic embrace of change and active participation in a variety of learning experiences throughout the school year has been a continuous source of inspiration.

Both cohorts were involved in several workshops and activities designed to build essential academic skills and prepare them for life beyond school.

Programs such as Elephant Education, The Resilience Program, and Elevate Education provided students with opportunities to enhance their emotional literacy and promote mental wellbeing, equipping them with strategies to navigate the challenges of academia effectively.

TANYA VOLAREVIC – HEAD OF YEAR 10

In addition to this, the Year 10 cohort participated in SCG Active – an extracurricular program that allowed them to explore various sport, music, or arts activities throughout the year, tailored to their interests and strengths. This not only fostered teamwork and collaboration, but also encouraged students to discover new passions and develop their skills in a supportive environment.

For the Year 11 cohort, Connections Day featured an escape room challenge, designed to strengthen bonds and encourage teamwork. This allowed them to work together to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles, further fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among their peers. Such experiences are invaluable in preparing students for future collaborative endeavours, both academically and socially.

A significant highlight of the school year was the Year 10 and 11 Formal, an event that commemorated student achievement and created lasting memories.

This event was organised by our student-run Formal Committee, with all students embracing the chance to dress up and enjoy a night of fun. The evening featured a lively atmosphere filled with music, dancing, and moments to connect with peers and teachers. The Year 10 and 11 Formal served as a wonderful occasion for students to reflect on their journey so far, while looking forward to the future.

To further enhance real-world learning, the Japan Tour was an opportunity for Year 11 students to engage with a different culture. This allowed them to gain insights into global perspectives and enhance their cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity. Moreover, through overseas travel, students were able to develop essential life skills such as adaptability, problem-solving, and teamwork as they navigated a new environment. The Japan Tour was an unforgettable experience that contributes to the overall growth of students, preparing them to thrive in a globalised world.

As part of their professional development, the Year 10 and 11 cohorts participated in the Work to Learn Program. Year 10 students engaged in work experience, gaining valuable insights into the world of work. This provided them with an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge and skills in real-world settings, bridging the gap between education and employment. Meanwhile, the Year 11 cohort focused on First Aid Training and the Fit to Drive program, which equipped students with essential knowledge and practical skills that are crucial for their safety and the safety of others. Both cohorts ended the week with experiences that enhance their resume, promote the responsibilities of adulthood, and that are vital to shaping well-rounded individuals who are better prepared to enter the workforce.

Reflecting on 2024, it was a year of celebration filled with numerous achievements and unforgettable moments. We look forward to building on this momentum as we move into 2025 and beyond.

YEAR 12 Our Class of 2024 have wholeheartedly embraced various leadership opportunities, taking the initiative to lead events that have fostered school spirit and community engagement. Whether organising whole school events or coordinating charity drives, these young leaders have demonstrated remarkable teamwork and determination.

Throughout the year, students have shared many memorable milestones, which have become a hallmark of our Year 12 community. The year commenced with a Leadership Retreat at Lady Northcote Recreation Camp, where students had the opportunity to plan ahead, enhance their study skills, and strengthen their connections with their peers. Shortly thereafter, we held our inaugural Year 12 Induction evening, a celebratory event that highlighted the significance of this year and the experiences awaiting them as both students and leaders at Southern Cross Grammar.

Our Class of 2024 have wholeheartedly embraced various leadership opportunities, taking the initiative to lead events that have fostered school spirit and community engagement. Whether organising whole school events or coordinating charity drives, these young leaders have demonstrated remarkable teamwork and determination. Their commitment not only enhanced the school experience for their peers in all year levels but also set a strong example of leadership in action, inspiring others to engage and contribute positively to our school community.

This cohort also took full advantage of the support programs available to enhance their academic performance and consolidate their learning. A highlight has been the Elevate Educate program, renowned for its two-decade history of research into the study habits of Australia’s top students. This initiative has equipped our students with improved study techniques, fostering motivation and confidence to enhance their exam performance. They also benefited from Game Plan Coaching incursions, which provided exciting strategies for maintaining motivation and navigating the complexities of their final school year.

As we concluded this year, we celebrated the achievements of our students with the Year 12 Final Assembly and Fun Day. Students reflected on the sentimental value of their experiences at Southern Cross Grammar, recalling cherished memories along the way. TEACHING AND LEARNING 2024 has been a year of remarkable achievements and meaningful growth for Secondary education at Southern Cross Grammar.

Our students performed well above state and national benchmarks, excelling not only in academic pursuits but also across a diverse range of sporting, cultural, and creative endeavours. These successes reflect the strength of our commitment to developing independent, capable, and lifelong learners who are prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of a complex world.

Central to this year’s achievements has been the expansion of opportunities that empower student agency and selfdirection. The comprehensive electives program allowed students to pursue their passions and strengths, tailoring their learning experiences to areas of personal interest. These choices fostered ownership of learning, equipping students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and independence that aligns with SCG’s purpose to build confident, capable learners.

The SCG Active Program continued to enhance student wellbeing, offering regular opportunities for physical activity and connection. This initiative not only supported students’ health but also reinforced their capacity to engage effectively in their learning, demonstrating the importance of wellbeing in achieving academic success.

Student-led experiences were a defining feature of the year. Through cultural celebrations, guest speakers, and community festivals, students had opportunities to lead, collaborate, and express their creativity. As the year concluded, two significant programs demonstrated SCG’s focus on authentic, student-driven learning. The Year 9 City Experience gave students the chance to connect their classroom learning to real-world contexts, exploring complex challenges and contributing thoughtful solutions in the heart of Melbourne. The Year 8 Multidisciplinary Light Projects showcased creative and collaborative thinking, with students designing innovative projects that combined art, design, science and engineering. These initiatives exemplified SCG’s vision of education that extends beyond the classroom, preparing students with the skills and agency to confidently navigate diverse opportunities.

These successes are a testament to the dedication and expertise of our staff. STUDENT CARE This year, Southern Cross Grammar has embraced the values of kindness, trust, ethics, enterprise, and hope to continue shaping a supportive and thriving community. Through continuous improvement of our Student Care program, we have made meaningful strides in fostering positive relationships and personal growth across all year levels.

In the curriculum, we introduced SCG Bright Start, an innovative program that equips our youngest learners with essential social-emotional skills and vocabulary to nurture their intra- and interpersonal development from the Foundation years.

In the Secondary school, the implementation of Homerooms has strengthened the sense of belonging and created an accessible first point of contact for students and families, helping us to navigate relationships and enhance connections across our community.

Student leadership stood out this year, both in formal roles and through informal initiatives. From the Mother’s Day Classic charity run to cultural festivals, International Women’s Day, Refugee Day, and National Sorry Day, our student leaders demonstrated agency, empathy, and initiative. These events highlighted the ability of SCG students to lead with integrity and compassion.

Over the past three years, our strategic focus on building student confidence and voice has resulted in noticeable growth in agency across the school. Programs like Elephant Ed and parent forums have kept our community informed on critical health topics, while the Health and Physical Education (HPE) team continued its outstanding work in educating our students on vital elements of holistic health. Online safety became an even more pressing concern in 2024, with family forums offering education and support to ensure all members of our community feel confident navigating the digital world.

The Bright Framework has continued to align our efforts across student care, academics, and wellbeing. This year, coproduction with students and professional designers led to an exceptional new playground at the Inge campus, significantly enhancing pro-social play. Small groups also piloted the SCG Fields, offering a glimpse of its transformative potential for student learning and wellbeing.

This balance of relational, educational, and tangible initiatives has solidified a strong foundation for future growth in the student care program. PRIMARY MATHEMATICS Mathematics has continued to thrive as a cornerstone of the Foundation to Year 6 curriculum. This year has been marked by numerous achievements, enthusiastic engagement, and a renewed focus on developing a deep and enduring understanding of mathematical concepts among our students.

Our students have demonstrated their mathematical prowess on state, national, and international stages. Many participated in the prestigious Kangourou sans Frontières Competition, which challenges critical thinking and problemsolving skills in a global context. Participation in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) further highlighted the talent within our student body, with students proudly representing SCG and achieving impressive results across multiple categories.

The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition was another exciting opportunity for students to engage with mathematics in innovative ways. This competition emphasised logical reasoning and computational skills, essential in our increasingly digital world.

Additionally, SCG students shone at the Maths Talent Quest (MTQ), where they showcased their creative approaches to solving real-world problems. This year’s NAPLAN results in numeracy were a point of pride for our school community. PRIMARY ENGLISH At SCG, English in the Primary years has been a vibrant and dynamic area of learning, fostering a love for reading, writing, and creative expression among our Foundation to Year 6 students. This year has been filled with memorable celebrations, engaging activities, and a steadfast commitment to developing fundamental literacy skills.

One of the highlights of the year was the much-anticipated Book Week celebrations and assembly, where students and staff embraced the joy of literature through creative costumes, engaging activities, and shared stories.

The assembly was a wonderful display of our students’ enthusiasm for reading, as they showcased their favourite characters and stories in a lively parade. This celebration reinforced the importance of books in our lives and brought our school community together to honour the power of storytelling.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) has continued to be a hub for literacy and collaboration. Students came together weekly to explore books, engage in storytelling, and participate in discussions that sparked their imaginations.

The LRC provided a welcoming space where students could share their love of reading, discover new authors, and immerse themselves in a diverse range of texts.

This year, our Grandparents Morning was another heartwarming highlight.

Grandparents joined their grandchildren in the classroom to share stories, read together, and celebrate the joys of literacy. This event was a beautiful way to connect generations and promote a lifelong love of reading.

The annual Book Fair was another exciting opportunity to celebrate literature, allowing families to explore and purchase books together. This event not only encouraged reading at home but also supported our school’s library resources, ensuring students continue to have access to a wide variety of texts.

The foundation of our English program remains direct, explicit instruction that systematically builds students’ skills in reading, writing, and oral language.

In the younger years, we continued to focus on structured literacy through the use of InitialLit, an evidence based program designed to develop early literacy skills. Students made significant progress in decoding, spelling, and comprehension, laying the groundwork for future success in English.

VCE REPORT This year’s VCE cohort has shown remarkable resilience, adaptability, and growth. Determined to study hard, not only did they commit to their academic work but also to one another and to the staff.

It is a privilege to reflect once again, as Head of VCE at Southern Cross Grammar, on the journey that our students have undertaken throughout their final years of schooling. The VCE program is always demanding and transformational within a student’s academic life. It is a journey of both intellectual intensity and personal growth.

This year has seen the VCE cohort grow to 140 students, a real testament to the ongoing relevance and appeal of the Victorian Certificate of Education. The program continues to afford our students access to a great range of subject choices, including the ability to follow their passions in academic learning supported by practical and vocational learning. Whether it was our students in the sciences, humanities, creative arts, or technical studies, they each had the facilities and support to do their best within their chosen area.

What makes the VCE journey unique is how it meets the distinctive needs of each student’s particular interests. Whether into scientific inquiry, creative expression, or practical skills development in vocational areas, the students are led in finding their interests. This flexibility has been majorly instrumental in our success, where the core offering in our curriculum has continuously provided diverse learning pathways. To this end, our students are exposed to 26 different subjects through which they can satisfy their curiosity whilst building the skills sets needed outside the classroom.

Added to that, there is the inclusion of vocational pathways such as the VCE Vocational Major (VM) program, which continues to provide a meaningful bridge between academic theory and real-world application, giving students hands-on

That has proved particularly true with regard to the collaborative spirit in which students approached learning through study groups, shared insights, and provided emotional support through these difficult few years.

As we led our students into preparation for their exams, the clarity of good preparation and deepening engagement with the material has still been paramount. Once again, the school has laid on a suite of external revision lectures that our students have been only too eager to embrace. Such sessions are paramount in consolidating knowledge and confidence as the examination period beckons.

Student participation in these opportunities shows that they welcome the challenges set before them.

In our ongoing effort to promote a culture of reading, we continued our library sessions for middle years, fostering an appreciation for a diverse range of literature. VCE students enjoyed the added benefit of one-on-one tutoring support provided by Mr. Lake every Thursday, a successful initiative that significantly enhanced their learning experience. Additionally, we proudly launched our Literary Scholars Program under the guidance of Dr. Cholewa, providing students with further opportunities to deepen their literary analysis and critical thinking skills.

A highlight of the year was a memorable outing for our Literature students, who, accompanied by Dr. Cholewa and Dr. Rovetto, attended a remarkable performance of Uncle Vanya featuring Andrew Scott at Cinema Nova. This production, filmed during a sold-out run in London’s West End, beautifully captured the play’s exploration of complex human emotions such as unrequited love, regrets, and unfulfilled potential. The experience sparked enriching discussions back in the classroom, reinforcing the relevance of literature in understanding the human condition.

In Year 10 English, students showcased their understanding of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 through a variety of creative artefacts, including vignettes, posters, black-out poems, dioramas, and music clips. This innovative approach allowed students to express their interpretations and insights in imaginative ways, demonstrating the powerful intersection of creativity and critical analysis.

As we reflect on this remarkable year, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated faculty. MATHEMATICS This year has been one of remarkable growth and achievement for mathematics at Southern Cross Grammar.

The expansion of our enrichment opportunities has been a highlight, enabling more students to challenge themselves in national and international mathematics competitions. Our participation in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition, and, for the first time, the Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) has showcased our students’ talent and enthusiasm.

The KSF competition, newly introduced to our school, was met with an enthusiastic response as 66 students participated — an amazing turnout for its first year at SCG! The results were impressive: 30 students achieved Participation certificates, 34 earned Credit awards, and two standout students, Hunter (Year 8) and Veronica (Year 11), earned Distinctions.

JAMES MOTT – LEARNING AREA LEADER: YEARS 7-12 MATHEMATICS

“The willingness of our students to embrace rigorous mathematical studies reflects their commitment to personal and academic growth.”

The CAT competition saw 26 students take on this challenge, which was more than triple the number from last year. The results were commendable: 17 Participation awards, 8 Credit awards, and one Distinction, achieved by Aarush (Year 7).

Our school’s engagement in the Australian Mathematics Competition continued to grow, with 78 students taking part—an increase from last year’s participation.

The students excelled: 2 received Participation certificates, 6 earned Proficient, 23 achieved Credit, 41 received Distinction, and 5 attained High Distinction.

Special congratulations to Aarav (Year 8), Sanad (Year 9), Aayan (Year 9), Sathinsundar (Year 9), and Lily (Year 10) for their High Distinctions, and a particular recognition to Bhargav (Year 7) for being awarded Best in School.

2024 also marked a record number of students enrolled in Unit 3&4 Specialist Mathematics, with 13 students opting for this challenging subject—more than double the numbers from 2021 to 2023. This is significant given the statewide decline of approximately 40% in enrolments in VCE Specialist Mathematics since 2004. The willingness of our students to embrace rigorous mathematical studies reflects their commitment to personal and academic growth.

These accomplishments underscore the positive, supportive culture of mathematics at Southern Cross Grammar, where students are encouraged to strive for excellence, embrace challenges, and support each other in their mathematical journeys.

SCIENCE 2024 has been an extraordinary journey for our students across all year levels, filled with hands-on experiences, cutting-edge technology, and exploration beyond the classroom.

From introducing exciting new electives for the Year 9 and 10 students which offer more specialised areas for exploration, to launching the school’s first virtual reality (VR) program, our students have embraced the wonders of science with curiosity and creativity. Each year level embarked on unique adventures, whether through excursions, design challenges, or scientific experiments, gaining not only knowledge but also practical skills.

The Year 7 students visited the Melbourne Zoo where they studied animal exhibits, explored food webs and the impact of human activity. The Year 8 students embraced the spirit of design thinking and built Rube Goldberg machines. Making use of 3D printing and laser technologies, they engineered intricate devices that performed simple tasks in complex ways.

MANSI JAIN – LEARNING AREA LEADER: SCIENCE

The Year 9 students had a year packed with scientific exploration. They were the first cohort to visit and study the ecosystem on the SCG Fields site. The Forensic Science excursion, which included visits to the Police Museum and an exciting escape room challenge, sparked curiosity in crime scene investigation techniques. On the Earth and Space Sciences excursion, students collected and analysed water samples from a local lake, measuring properties such as pH and CO2 levels, to understand the environmental impact of human activity.

Year 10 students were introduced to a variety of new and exciting electives featuring a range of interdisciplinary sciences. The students explored environmental science, beginning with the origins of the universe. Through a visit to the Melbourne Planetarium and Scienceworks, students were immersed in a world of starlight, and went on to use VR technology in class to explore ecosystems from around the world. Using Meta Quest 3 headsets allowed Digital Tech students to explore virtual worlds and applications in industries such as healthcare and education. Meanwhile, they dove into AI technologies by creating chatbots and digital short films, gaining hands-on experience with emerging trends. The excursion to AgriBio offered invaluable insights into genetic research and biotechnology, and through hands-on experiments in biochemistry, students gained a deeper understanding of these dynamic fields, enhancing both their knowledge and passion for scientific discovery.

At the VCE level, students aimed to apply knowledge in real-world environments. Biology students embarked on an excursion to the University of Melbourne where they investigated immune responses and evolutionary change utilising the university’s state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. Physics students enjoyed a thrilling excursion to Luna Park, using the park’s rides to study the physics of motion and forces. Year 11 Psychology students took part in fascinating cognitive development experiments.

Beyond the classroom, our students also participated in a wide range of science competitions, including the International Chemistry Quiz, STAV Science Talent Search, the Big Science Competition, the Junior Science Olympiad, Australian Science Olympiads, and the Quantum Victoria Print-A-Car Challenge.

These opportunities provided platforms for our budding scientists to showcase their knowledge and creativity.

In the Science/STEM department, we are committed to continually developing and enriching our programs, always striving to offer engaging and meaningful experiences for our students. One of the most memorable moments was the arrival of our artist-inresidence, Glen Downey. Glen worked closely with our students on an exciting collaborative project—painting a vibrant sports wall mural. This project not only brightened and enriched the visual landscape of our school but also provided students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with a professional artist.

Through this hands-on experience, students gained invaluable insights into the creative process, learning about mural design, composition, and execution.

The interaction with Glen also inspired many to think beyond the classroom, exploring how art can impact and transform public spaces.

CYNTHIA DROSSINIS – LEARNING AREA LEADER: CREATIVE ARTS (F-12)

At the beginning of Term 4, we hosted the annual F-12 Art Exhibition, aptly named SPECTRUM. This exhibition celebrated the artistic talents of students across all year levels, showcasing a wide array of creative works that reflected the diverse perspectives and artistic journeys of our students. From drawing and painting to sculpture and mixed media, the exhibition was a testament to the hard work, dedication, and imagination that flourishes in our school community. Our VCE students particularly shone, pushing the boundaries of their creative products and demonstrating impressive technical skills and conceptual depth.

In addition to the art exhibition, this year also saw the introduction of a photography competition, which encouraged students to broaden their creative horizons. The competition allowed students to explore new mediums and express their ideas through photography, expanding their appreciation for visual storytelling beyond the traditional classroom setting. We look forward to offering more arts-based competitions in the upcoming years.

A significant highlight of 2024 has been the expansion of our visual arts curriculum. This year, we introduced new and exciting classes such as 2D Art, Technical Drawing, and Architecture. These courses were designed to cater to a wider range of student interests and offer them the opportunity to explore more specialised areas of the visual arts. By engaging in these new disciplines, students were able to develop a solid foundation in various artistic techniques and processes, while also honing their creativity and critical thinking skills.

LANGUAGES As the school year draws to a close, we reflect on the vibrant and enriching curriculum of languages and cultural activities that brought the community closer. From mesmerising performances to hands-on workshops, this year has been a celebration of tradition, creativity and connection.

Our Chinese New Year celebrations kicked off with an electrifying lion dance performance, captivating Primary School students, staff, and families. The rhythmic drumbeats and the lion’s lively movements symbolised prosperity and good luck, setting an energetic tone for the year.

This year the SCG Primary students were immersed for the first time in the French language and French culture. Our school’s first Bastille Day celebration was a memorable event! Students enjoyed delicious crêpes, adding a taste of France to the day. The French assembly showcased lively dances and creative mime performances, immersing everyone in French culture. It was a joyful occasion, bringing the school community together to celebrate and learn about French traditions.

ELIN LIN – LEARNING AREA LEADER: LANGUAGES

Our Secondary art enthusiasts and curious minds alike embarked on a memorable Chinese Art Excursion in Term 2. Students had the chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of traditional Chinese arts. In the program, students learned to play guzheng, a traditional Chinese string instrument. The serene sounds of the guzheng resonated as students listened to captivating performances. Students also experimented with vibrant patterns in their tie dye activity, creating unique fabric pieces while learning about ancient textile traditions. At the end of the program, strategy came to life as students learned to play Weiqi, sharpening their critical thinking and patience through this ancient board game. This excursion left everyone inspired and proud of their artistic achievements.

In Term 3, Primary school students were thrilled to participate in a dynamic kung fu incursion, where they learned basic moves from professional martial artists. The session emphasized not just physical activity but also the core principles of kung fu: respect, focus, and perseverance. Giggles, kicks, and punches filled the hall as students practiced their newly learned moves, channelling their inner martial artist.

A highlight of the year was the much-anticipated Chinese Culture Day held at the Box Hill Town Hall in Term 3. The event brought together students, parents, and staff for a day of cultural immersion. From cultural performances and workshops to traditional games and food, the day offered something for everyone. Middle school girls also enjoyed trying on traditional clothing and makeup of Han dynasty, which made them look like ancient princesses of China!

The experience culminated in a lively group lunch at Haidilao Hot Pot in Box Hill, where students and teachers bonded over delicious and interactive meals.

For many, it was their first time dipping fresh ingredients into flavourful broths, and the restaurant’s famous noodle-pulling performance added an extra element of delight.

These events have not only enriched our understanding of different traditions but also fostered a sense of curiosity and appreciation for diversity. We look forward to more language and cultural explorations in the coming year and thank everyone who contributed to making these experiences so memorable.

HEALTH AND PE This year offered remarkable learning experienes both in and outside the classroom, featuring facility upgrades and exciting new additions that students truly enjoyed.

Students benefited from engaging with external professionals across various fields. A key focus was on developing lifelong skills that are applicable not only in sports but also in other areas of life.

Our Primary School students concentrated on enhancing their fundamental motor skills, such as throwing, catching, kicking, and striking, while Year 6 students dedicated their class time to prepare for interschool sports.

Sportsmanship was a major theme in Primary PE this year, where students practiced respect for teammates and opponents through a variety of sports and competitive games. Many Grade 3 and 4 students had the chance to participate in AFL and basketball coaching sessions during PE classes. New Health classes also emphasised the importance of staying active, eating nutritious food, and learning about the Olympics.

LIAM OGDEN – LEARNING AREA LEADER: HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In Secondary Health and Physical Education, new units expanded learning opportunities. Year 9 students tackled critical thinking challenges in the Teaching Games for Understanding unit, linking movement patterns in sports like European handball and tchoukball. The Year 8 students participated in a Health and Fitness unit centred around preparation for the Snow Camp to Mount Buller. Students utilised the Sports Science Centre to conduct pre- and post-testing on key skills required for the slopes and participated in different types of fitness sessions to improve their overall fitness. Students across Years 7 to 9 developed essential character-building skills for sports and physical activities, focusing on inclusive participation, collaboration, and sportsmanship.

The Sport and Recreation students enhanced their leadership abilities by assisting with the Athletics Carnival and interschool sports teams from Years 6 to 10. They applied classroom knowledge through hands-on experiences, including a First Aid incursion and an ice-skating excursion. Year 12 PE students applied core concepts during surfing excursions, while Year 10 students participated in self-defence classes and explored the significance of recreational physical activity.

Two Year 9 groups attended the Wilsons Promontory camp, featuring surfing and an overnight hike. Students embraced Leave No Trace principles, deepening their understanding and appreciation for natural environments along with developing skills and understanding in all aspects of hiking and camping.

Our Sports Science Centre also hosted the CloudFit team, who filmed students in Year 9 Fitness using cutting-edge technology. Students collaborated with the team to demonstrate their knowledge of equipment and discuss its relevance in learning key fitness and health movements.

This year, we also welcomed a new playground, enjoyed by students of all ages, which underscored the social aspect of physical activity. Additionally, a new synthetic surface on our oval enhanced safety and allowed for a greater variety of sports, enriching our PE facilities.

MUSIC 2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary for the SCG Music Department. We’ve celebrated outstanding performances and groundbreaking achievements while fostering talent and embracing every opportunity to showcase our students. Together, we have made significant progress in enriching our musical community.

In a similar vein to 2023, our Classroom and Instrumental Music streams continue to thrive. Our offerings in both have expanded this year with the introduction of Select Entry Music at Year 9, a General Year 9 Music elective and an increased number of students in VCE Music. Our Year 6 Advanced Music class had the greatest number of enrolled students to date, with 29 young musicians taking the subject in 2024. As well as classroom expansion, the number of instrumental ensembles has increased with the introduction of a third tier String Ensemble (Encore Strings), a second tier Big Band (Little Big Band) and reworked Choirs at both Primary and Secondary levels (Heron Choir and Middle School Choir). Again this year, our students have had the opportunity to travel interstate for performances and share their skills with our broader community.

KERRY TROUNSON – LEARNING AREA LEADER: MUSIC

In the Primary School, our focus remains on music literacy through the explicit use of Kodály pedagogy and teaching practices for all F–6 classes. Whilst our lower Primary programs have not had a great deal of change this year, our Year 5 Band program saw both classes timetables simultaneously for the first time ever, which allowed us to have greater options of instrument choices. This year we had four euphoniums and two bass clarinets in the ensemble which added new depth to the program. The group also enjoy our greatly expanded Orchestral Percussion instrument range. Year 6 Music also underwent structural change, returning to our more traditional General Music/Advanced Music streaming options. As I mentioned earlier, this year there were 29 students in Advanced Music, our largest enrolment to date. These very targeted changes have proven worthy as the number of students enrolling in lessons from these programs continues to grow year-on-year and allows our students to specialise in their strengths.

In the Secondary School, Select Entry Music continues to grow in popularity, with Year 7 and Year 8 classes having significant enrolment growth. Year 9 Select Entry Music was introduced this year with the express purpose of preparing our gifted musicians for early entry VCE Music Unit 1 & 2 at a Year 10 level.

As well as offerings for our Select Entry students, our Year 7 and 8 cohort have had General Music classes, focusing on Kodály fundamentals and specialised units, exploring topics and genres such as Blues Music, Music for Film and Advertising, and Australian Music. We were also able to offer a Year 9 General Music elective this year, which joyfully saw the return of some familiar faces from previous years’ Select Entry enrolments.

2024 saw seven VCE students work diligently across the year. The growth of those students is remarkable. They honed their music literacy skills, developed a significant composition portfolio, and prepared extensively for their external Performance Exams. We are very proud of the all of them, but particularly the five Unit 3 & 4 Music Performance Repertoire students, who have now concluded their formal classroom music education at SCG. As musicians we learn to perform. It is at the very core of what we do, and 2024 was no exception. We hosted a series of unforgettable concerts and performances, which left our audiences eager for more. Some of the most

The inaugural Jazz Night, a truly wonderful evening that featured performances from our Big Band and Jazz friends. This new addition to the school calendar promises to become a much-anticipated annual event.

Generations in Jazz: What a weekend it was! Our Big Band made their way to South Australia once again, and we’re already preparing for GIJ 2025.

Students learned valuable lessons in teamwork, musicianship, and resilience.

Unlike 2023, we were blessed with beautiful weather and had the privilege of placing 8th in a section that contained 44 bands. An outstanding effort for an ensemble that’s been in existence for a little over two years. Our program is in great shape, with students excited to share their experience as we plan for taking three groups to GIJ next year.

•

Term 2 Soirees followed closely after GIJ, with nine evenings of performances.

These events allow our youngest musicians to observe and aspire to the level of our most experienced performers.

•

The Showcase Concert in Term 3 was a resounding success. It was clear to everyone present that music continues to grow exponentially at SCG, both in number of performers and in quality.

•

The inaugural Little Big Band rehearsal in Term 4 marked a milestone in the development of our ensemble programs, offering younger students a new platform to grow and collaborate musically.

•

Term 4 saw another round of Soirees, with 10 nights of performances from our VCE, Year 7, 8 and 9 Select Entry Music students all the way through to our youngest String students in Foundation.

•

The Friends of Music Trivia Night: This event not only fostered community spirit but also raised valuable funds to support our music program. This event was a hit with students, parents, and staff alike.

•

We rounded out the year with our second Twilight Concert, a relaxed social event that has quickly become a fixture in our calendar.

If that wasn’t enough, we continued our regular lessons and weekly rehearsals for our 11 performing ensembles, AMEB and ANZCA Exams for many students, and performances for external and internal events, such as ANZAC Day ceremonies, Melton Council Citizenship ceremonies, Remembrance Day event, Carols by Candlelight, and more.

The Music Department continues to expand, with demand for lessons and places in our accelerated programs growing steadily. This has been pivotal year for our Music Department. While behind the scenes music staff have been aware of the growth, it is now obvious to all that we are rapidly growing, and therefore able to offer a whole new suite of options to our students.

As we move forward, we remain committed to nurturing the musical talents within our community, embracing innovation, and providing a vibrant and enriching environment for all. With a successful year behind us, we eagerly anticipate an even brighter future for our department and the musical world we continue to influence.

FOOD STUDIES 2024 saw increasing student numbers and the fine tuning of the Food Studies curriculum on Schoolbox, recipe repertoire, tools, equipment and processes to ensure a smooth and efficient operation of classes.

The main focus for Food Studies has been providing students with the opportunity to participate in a weekly practical session, where they enjoyed producing a range of products such as hamburgers, potato salad, chorizo and vegetable couscous, chocolate eclairs, German custard crumb cake, sausage rolls, raspberry jam, HSP, cheesy schnitzel with pressed parmesan potatoes and Mediterranean risotto just to name a few.

In the classroom, one of the main assessments was the Design Brief. The Year 7 students designed their own toasties; the Year 8 students made hamburgers, while the Year 9 students developed and styled their own noodle-box. The Year 10 students embraced the responsibility to work collaboratively and design their own areas of study, choosing Asian and European cuisines where they honed in on a weekly country or cuisine of focus, and the Year 11 and 12 students following the VCE curriculum.

STEVEN LASCELLES – FOOD STUDIES TEACHER

The Year 10 students executed a Devonshire Tea for invited staff members and headed for the hills for an excursion to the Yarra Valley Chocolate factory where they participated in a chocolate class and of course bought a few treats to take home.

In Semester One, the Year 7 students celebrated World Donut Day by decorating their own donuts with a range of icing and decorations that got their creativity flowing, creating some fantastic results to take home.

I hope everyone that participated in the Food Studies curriculum in 2024 enjoyed their time and developed skills and an appreciation for food.

SPORT It was another triumphant year for SCG Sport, with many students demonstrating incredible skill, talent and determination across a breadth of athletic and team sports.

2024 was a significant step forward for sport at SCG. Supported by the hours of hard work and determination through the SCG Active program, our school saw a drastic increase in participation rates across a wide variety of interschool sports this year. For the first time ever, SCG entered badminton and futsal teams at the Secondary level, with a number of teams achieving success and advancing past the divisional rounds. We also saw success in basketball, tennis, cricket, volleyball and soccer and had at least one team in all competitions win the divisional round and progress to regionals.

Our Primary school students also experienced success, with both our girls and mixed t-ball teams winning their district competitions and progressing to regionals. Not only did our students show great skill and determination, but the feedback received from other schools competing in the tournament about our student’s sportsmanship and fair play is a true testament to the young people our school community is creating.

Our school carnivals built upon last year’s success and were again an example of how our students value their sense of house spirit and community.

The Athletics Carnival was the highlight, with a record number of students participating in events across all age groups on the last day of Term 1.

A large group of SCG student athletes represented the school in swimming, cross country and athletics again in 2024 with many students winning their events and processing to regionals. A special mention goes out to Roman of Year 10 who again won the regional hurdles event and competed at the state finals! Well done, Roman!

It is fantastic to see how much our school values the sporting pursuits of our students. By providing opportunities for them to gain skills, confidence and a sense of achievement, our students will be well equipped to take on the challenges that await them in the future. With a number of exciting sport-related developments in SCG’s near future, we cannot wait to see what 2025 will bring!

HUMANITIES Our Humanities Department continues to provide a rich and engaging educational experience for students. Humanities at SCG endeavours to prepare students to be come informed and active participants in their communities and the world.

Through programs, both inside and outside of the classroom, the department brings History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Business Studies to life, creating immersive learning opportunities that deepen students’ understanding of the world around them. The interactive nature of the curriculum has led to positive student outcomes, with many students developing a strong interest in Humanities and its related disciplines. The department also supports students in developing skills that are transferable to other subjects and their future careers, such as critical analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication.

History Up Close returned for their annual visit to transport students and teachers back to the Medieval period. Teachers were incredibly impressed with the enthusiasm of the Year 8 cohort, who actively volunteered to form a shield wall, launch arrows (tennis balls), dress up as the monarchs of Caroline Springs and engage in a battle to protect one’s honour.

SCG is very fortunate to have such knowledgeable staff, who kindly give up their time to further enhance the learning experiences of students. Mr Nicol, once again, happily accepted the invitation to share his insights, stories and items from his own time of service to complement the learning the Year 9 students have been partaking in about the Great War. This year has been a very exciting time for the Humanities Department as a number of brand-new electives were available for students to choose from throughout the year. At Year 9, Anthropology and Globalisation allowed students to delve into case studies and ideas that help empower them to address global challenges with informed decision-making about the past, present and future.

At Year 10, the offerings have continued to entice students. Not only are students tasked with coming up with a business idea, but they also have to market it to consumers in Business Marketing. Key economic skills, such as GDP, inflation and standard of living, along with understanding Australia’s role within the world economy are addressed in Financial Literacy and Global Economies. Not only is it important to understand Australia’s economy, but so too our legal and political systems, and in turn, how legislation and laws impact our daily lives in the 21st century. This is showcased in Legal Studies: Justice and Legal Studies: The Law and You. For those interested in the past and how it informs current affairs, War and Conflict investigates military conflicts in both Vietnam and the Falklands.

It is an exciting time to be a student at SCG with such a diverse range of subjects to choose from under the Humanities umbrella. The biggest challenge will be trying to select which ones!

WELLBEING As we conclude the 2024 academic year, we take this opportunity to reflect on our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing, now in its fourth year of implementation.

Guided by the insights from the Resilient Youth Student Wellbeing Survey data, our Primary and Secondary teachers have placed a strong emphasis on fostering connections with students, recognising the vital role these relationships play in their overall wellbeing.

With the introduction of SCG Bright, which included an afternoon of dedicated time for extra-curricular activities, there was more emphasis on creating opportunities for students to promote their wellbeing in action. This important time of active connection, complemented the explicit teaching of social and emotional skills taught in the classroom or Homeroom environment.

LAUREN SMITH – HEAD OF WELLBEING - CURRICULUM

Throughout the year, we have actively engaged our parents and families in our initiatives. By sharing valuable resources from SchoolTV and introducing parent webinars hosted by Toolbox and Elephant Ed, we have worked collaboratively to enhance our community’s understanding of positive mental health outcomes for our students. Additionally, we have prioritised staff wellbeing, providing professional development opportunities and wellness initiatives that underscore the important link between staff wellbeing and student success.

We also maintained our partnerships with Elephant Ed, which educated our upper Primary and Secondary students on essential topics, including sexual education, consent, respectful relationships, and inclusion and diversity. The feedback from students continues to be overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the effectiveness of these workshops and the value that the workshops add to the lives of young people.

Furthermore, our collaboration with Toolbox has continued to empower students in Years 6-10 to develop skills for managing stress and anxiety, through a cognitive and behavioural psychology perspective. Next year, we are extending the Toolbox workshops to more year levels across the school to complement our whole school approach to the psychosocial development of our students.

As we look back on this year, we are proud of the strides we have made in promoting the physical, social, and emotional development of our students.

Moving forward, we remain dedicated to furthering our wellbeing initiatives and nurturing a supportive environment for all members of our school community.

From months of rehearsals to the stunning final performances, students from across the school showcased their talents in various on-stage and backstage roles.

The launch of SCG Active has been an exciting program that has allowed students to explore new hobbies and interests - whether it be a new sport, science or art stream. It was a shining example of how we nurture the diverse interests of our students, providing them with enriching opportunities to grow.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL PRODUCTION This year the Performing Arts students and staff brought a spooky yet heartwarming tale to the stage with its unforgettable production of The Addams Family.

Under the direction of the talented Ms Tobiah Elliot and Musical Direction of Mrs Kerry Trounson, the show captivated audiences with its quirky characters, catchy musical numbers, and a perfect blend of humour and heart.

The story centres around the eccentric and macabre Addams family, as they navigate a “normal” dinner party with the family of Wednesday Addams’ new boyfriend, Lucas Beineke. What follows is a whirlwind of comedy, chaos, and family revelations, all set to a lively score filled with both hauntingly beautiful ballads and toe-tapping showstoppers.

KERRY TROUNSON – LEARNING AREA LEADER: MUSIC

“Being part of the show has been so amazing. Throughout the duration of the musical, I have met other people from my grade as well as others who I’m so glad to now call my friends. We were, and still are all so proud of how The Addams Family turned out in the eventual end.”

The cast was nothing short of spectacular, with standout performances from Year 12 student Talia as Gomez, whose charm and comedic timing delighted the audience, and Lexa (Year 10) as Morticia, whose poise and elegance added to the dark allure of the Addams family. Wednesday, played by Anabelle (Year 8), captured the perfect balance of teenage angst and vulnerability, while Grace (Year 7) as Uncle Fester brought warmth and comedic brilliance to the stage.

The standout portrayal of Pugsley was a credit to Leni (Year 4) who showed poise and comedic timing beyond her tender years.

The ensemble, including the ever-energetic Addams family ancestors, supported the main cast with high-energy performances, stunning choreography, and impressive vocal harmonies. The musical’s clever set design brought the spooky mansion to life, and we were lucky enough to have use of props items from Sydney’s original professional cast show. The fabulous costumes from Stage School Australia dazzled with gothic gowns, dapper suits, and plenty of iconic Addams family flair.

The production was a huge success, with rave reviews from the community. It was clear that months of hard work, dedication, and collaboration had paid off in the form of a truly memorable theatrical experience. The entire cast and crew can be incredibly proud of their achievement, and this performance will certainly be remembered as one of the highlights of the year.

SCG ACTIVE A new program launched this year, SCG Active allows students to engage in new activities and develop new found passions across sport, performing arts, STEM and creative arts.

Every Thursday afternoon, students from Years 7 to 10 eagerly set off for their chosen SCG Active activity — whether it be sport, performing arts, or outdoor education. This program, designed around the principles of staying active and building connections, takes students to various locations around the community, offering them diverse experiences that foster both personal growth and school pride.

Extracurricular activities play a crucial role in the development of adolescents, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. Engaging in physical activity or creative expression helps release dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical in the brain. This natural boost promotes feelings of joy and motivation, directly contributing to a positive mindset. For adolescents navigating the complexities of these formative years, these dopamine releases can improve focus, reduce stress, and encourage emotional regulation. Research consistently shows that students who participate in extracurricular activities tend to perform better academically and develop strong social bonds—key outcomes for young minds.

ENRICHMENT LITERACY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

LITERACY SCHOLARS PROGRAM The 2024 Literacy Scholars Program offered selected students in Years 9, 10, and 11, identified through high performance in Literacy, the opportunity to engage in enriching after-school learning experiences.

Held weekly, the sessions fostered both social and intellectual connections through a range of engaging and thought-provoking activities.

One highlight of the program was creative writing, where students aimed to publish and submit their work to competitions, magazines, and journals, allowing them to refine their writing skills and gain exposure in the literary world. Another key component was the focus on ethics and debating, where students explored challenging topics, honing their argumentation skills in an intellectually stimulating environment. Film discussions also played a significant role in the program. Led in the auditorium (with pizza), these sessions encouraged students to engage in critical analysis and dialogue about cinematic works, promoting deeper understanding and thoughtful discussion.

Additionally, the program provided targeted support during peak assessment periods through extension work. Students received extra tutoring and guidance on their English and Literature coursework, giving them the tools to excel in their studies at SCG. Beyond academics, the Scholars Program created a space for students to socialise, collaborate, and share ideas, fostering a sense of community and intellectual camaraderie. Students also practised elevator pitches, and discussed philosophical writings such as those of Roland Barthes, reflecting on complex ideas.

A standout moment of the program occurred on August 21, 2024 when SCG had the distinct honour of welcoming Associate Professor Antonia Pont from Deakin University as a guest speaker. Antonia Pont, an accomplished poet, academic, and yoga practitioner, delivered an inspiring talk that challenged students’ perceptions of what it means to “practice” something. Drawing from her academic work and collaboration with Gilles Deleuze, she redefined practice not simply as preparation for a performance but as a profound engagement in its own right.

Overall, the 2024 Scholars Program was a tremendous success, blending academic enrichment with enjoyable activities, making it a truly memorable experience for all involved.

PERSONAL PROJECT Part of our Year 8 curriculum, Personal Project gives students the opportunity to develop an idea or passion of theirs, creating new inventions, products, designs or entrepreneurial endeavours.

As the Head of Department for Personal Project, I am thrilled to reflect on an inspiring year of exploration and creativity among our Year 8 students. This year, our learners were granted the exciting opportunity to delve into their personal passions, transforming ideas into tangible outcomes through the structured stages of project development.

From the very start, students engaged in defining their interests, brainstorming concepts, and prototyping their visions. Each project represented a unique expression of individuality, highlighting the wide range of curiosities and aspirations among our students. As they navigated the processes of funding, testing, and re-evaluating their ideas, students not only honed their skills but also cultivated a sense of autonomy and responsibility.

100 DAYS OF FOUNDATION The 100 Days of School celebration for our Foundation students was a truly joyous occasion at Southern Cross Grammar, marking a significant milestone in their first year of learning.

It was a day filled with excitement, reflection, and gratitude as we celebrated the incredible growth our youngest learners have achieved in just 100 days.

The 100 Days of School is more than just a number — it’s a reflection of the courage and initiative shown by our Foundation students as they navigated their first year of formal schooling. Over these 100 days, they have embraced new routines, formed friendships, and taken their first steps in building foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and beyond.

Our Bright Start program has been instrumental in helping students develop a sense of belonging and connection within the classroom. This celebration was a culmination of those efforts, providing students, teachers, and families the chance to reflect on the journey so far and look forward to the adventures ahead.

The celebration was designed to inspire curiosity and creative thinking, with students participating in a range of engaging activities that encouraged them to reflect on what 100 days of learning means. From creating art projects with 100 items to participating in literacy and numeracy challenges centered around the number 100, our classrooms were vibrant with enthusiasm and imagination.

These activities also highlighted the critical thinking and problem-solving skills our students are beginning to develop, as they explored concepts of counting, patterns, and storytelling in fun and interactive ways.

At SCG, we place a strong emphasis on connection both within the classroom and across the wider school community. The 100 Days of School celebration brought together students, families, and staff to share in the joy of this milestone. Parents and caregivers were invited to join in the festivities, reinforcing the vital partnership between home and school in supporting our students’ growth.

The event also provided an opportunity for our older students to act as mentors and role models, with our Year 5 Buddy Program playing a key role in the day’s activities. Watching our Year 5 students guide and support their Foundation buddies was a testament to the kindness and leadership we nurture at SCG. As we reflect on this milestone, we are filled with hope for the journey ahead.

These first 100 days have laid a strong foundation for our students to become life-long learners who are confident, capable, and connected. The celebration reminded us all of the importance of celebrating progress, fostering curiosity, and building relationships that inspire growth.

ENRICHMENT 100 DAYS OF FOUNDATION

PARENTS AND FRIENDS COMMITTEE As our school community continues to grow and shift, year-on-year, our aim this year was to foster and embed the strong traditions we have worked on over the past few years.

Building traditions. That was our theme for this year.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are examples of those traditions, where we host a meal followed by a stall for our children to buy gifts for loved ones to commemorate those special moments. The love, care and thought put into the creation of these events by parent volunteers, such as Lisa Willson, is a testament to the dedication the PFC have to these traditions.

Our Halloween Disco is another example of that tradition. Each year, we host our children in the Centauri Centre, where with the support from parent volunteers, senior school students, along with some of the teaching faculty, the children get to enjoy an evening with their peers in an environment that is fun, festive and frolicsome. In years to come, these students will look back on those moments that built the traditions they will carry with them as they leave school.

Strong traditions help build our sense of community.

We get to form deeper connections with those we already know and they provide an opportunity to connect with new people we wouldn’t normally spend time with. As the community come together, over time we will build new traditions that will be part of the legacy we leave behind.

SENIOR SCHOOL FORMALS A highly anticipated event in our annual calendar, the Year 10 and 11 students were immersed in a magical night of dancing, celebration and bonding of friendships at their Formal.

With a dazzling Starry Night theme as a backdrop, the dedicated Formal Committee transformed Witchmount Estate into a glamourous venue. From the iconic red carpet and the sparkling ceiling of fairy lights, to the creative awards exchanged between students, every detail contributed to the enchanting atmosphere.

The event was a triumph, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Formal Committee and the exceptional leadership of Ms. Carpio. Students reveled in the chance to dress up, forge new friendships, and step away from their usual school routines.

The photobooth, complete with playful props, became a highlight of the night, capturing moments of joy and laughter shared by students and staff alike.

The students expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who joined in the festivities and to the Formal Commitee for their dedication. A special acknowledgement goes to Ms. Carpio for her outstanding contributions to making the evening unforgettable.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK National Science Week at Southern Cross Grammar was an inspiring and dynamic celebration of discovery, learning, and connection.

This year’s theme, Species Survival, brought the wonders of the natural world to life and fostered an appreciation for the intricate relationships that sustain our planet’s ecosystems.

Our Senior students took centre stage, embracing the opportunity to share their passion for science with their younger peers. Year 12 students worked diligently to prepare and present a series of captivating experimental demonstrations for the Primary School students. Their creative and engaging presentations showcased the power of hands-on learning, sparking curiosity and excitement in students across year levels.

A highlight of the week was a special incursion by Reptile Encounters, which offered students the chance to interact with experts and meet a variety of fascinating reptiles up close. From slitering snakes to scaly lizards, these encounters provided a tangible connection to the animal kingdom and underscored the importance of understanding and preserving biodiversity.

Students were captivated as they learned about the unique adaptations and behaviours that help species survive in their environments. This hands-on experience not only aligned with the Species Survival theme but also left students with a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of life on Earth.

The success of National Science Week 2024 reflects the spirit of collaboration and enthusiasm that defines our school community. NEW PLAYGROUND A new space for imagination and adventure.

This year, Southern Cross Grammar unveiled an exciting addition to our campus - a brand new playground that has quickly become a favourite space for our students. More than just a place to play, this dynamic playground represents collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to fostering an environment where students thrive both physically and socially.

The journey to this achievement began with the initiative of a small group of Primary School students, who shared a bold vision for an upgraded playground with school leadership. These young advocates presented their ideas with enthusiasm, detailing what they felt would create a space that was not only fun but also engaging and inclusive for students of all ages. Their voices became the foundation of the project, ensuring that the new playground would reflect the needs and aspirations of those who would use it most.

Once the vision was set, the team embarked on a meticulous search for a construction partner who could bring the students’ ideas to life. The chosen team embraced the challenge, working closely with us to design and execute a playground that met our high standards for quality, safety, and creativity. The result is a vibrant, multifunctional space that seamlessly blends adventure and learning, designed to challenge and excite students across all year levels.

The new playground features a variety of elements tailored to different interests and abilities. From climbing walls and monkey bars, to slides and interactive panels, every aspect of the playground invites exploration, builds resilience, and encourages imaginative play. Students have embraced the space wholeheartedly, enjoying the opportunities to test their limits, collaborate with friends, and build confidence.

Beyond its physical features, the playground has become a hub for connection, laughter, and community. PRIMARY CAMPS At SCG, our Camps Program plays a vital role in fostering resilience and independence among our students. Across the year levels, our carefully designed camps provide opportunities for students to challenge themselves, build relationships, and explore the world beyond the classroom in meaningful ways.

The Foundation students began their camp journey with a Day Camp held on campus, focusing on movement, wellbeing, and fun. Activities centred on healthy eating and dance, providing students with their first taste of a structured camp experience.

It was a joy to see our youngest learners embrace new routines, try new activities, and connect with their peers in such an engaging environment.

Year 1 students stepped beyond the main campus to experience the SCG Fields. This camp provided an opportunity to explore new spaces, engage in team-building activities, and strengthen their sense of curiosity and connection. With a mix of exploration, play, and reflection, students gained confidence in venturing further afield while feeling supported by their teachers and peers.

Year 2 students headed to Lady Northcote for a day program designed to prepare them for their first overnight camp in Year 3. This experience introduced students to outdoor challenges, teamwork, and problem-solving activities, helping them build confidence and trust in themselves and others. It was inspiring to see their growing independence and enthusiasm for trying new things.

For Year 3, Lady Northcote was a familiar setting for their first overnight camp, and it was a memorable milestone. Spending one night away from home was a big step, and our students embraced the challenge with courage and excitement. They engaged in activities that encouraged teamwork, resilience, and reflection, setting the tone for future camp experiences.

Year 4 students travelled to YMCA Anglesea for their twonight camp, where they explored the natural beauty of the coast and participated in activities that pushed them out of their comfort zones. The camp emphasised collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, as students tackled challenges like high ropes, bushwalking, and environmental education sessions.

Year 5 students ventured to The Summit, a two-night camp designed to build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills. From high-energy adventure activities to reflective team challenges, this camp encouraged students to think critically, take calculated risks, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others.

The Year 6 camp at Toolangi marked a significant milestone as students spent three nights, including their first experience camping in tents. This camp was a true test of resourcefulness, as students learned to cook, navigate, and work together in a natural setting. The sense of accomplishment they felt after completing their outdoor challenges and reflecting as a cohort was a highlight of their final Primary School year.

Our Camps Program is about more than just the activities — it’s about creating opportunities for students to grow as individuals and as part of a community. The experiences are designed to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and resilience while encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges.

YEAR 8 ALPINE The Year 8 Alpine Camp was a highly anticipated highlight of the school year, offering students a thrilling opportunity to embrace the magic of Mt. Buller.

Excitement buzzed as the group set off before dawn, eager for the adventure that awaited. Despite the long bus journey, spirits remained high, especially as the first glimpses of snow-capped peaks came into view.

Upon arrival, students were greeted by the friendly camp providers and settled into their accommodations. “We all gasped when we saw the amazing view from our cabin areas,” recalled Shannea and Abigail, describing their group’s balcony overlooking the spectacular alpine scenery.

The first day saw students diving into skiing lessons, guided by expert instructors, teaching them how to stop, turn, and navigate the slopes safely. From mastering the ‘pizza’ formation to riding the ‘Magic Carpet’ to the top of the beginner hill, the students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. Ski lessons followed, filled with laughter, tumbles and triumphant moments as students honed their skills on the slopes.

Evenings brought a sense of camaraderie and relaxation. After getting together for a well deserved meal, the group found plenty of ways to bond after busy days outdoors. Meals were a highlight, with many students favouring pizza and ice cream as they refueled for the next day’s adventures.

As the camp progressed, students built confidence on the slopes, tackling longer and more challenging runs, such as the Bourke Street run on Mt. Buller. Ammar reflected, “The views were breathtaking, and our descent was exhilarating. The unmatched thrill of skiing down those slopes was an experience we will never forget.” By the final day, bright orange vests dotted the mountains as students made the most of every moment on the snow.

Beyond the skiing, the camp fostered resilience, teamwork, and enduring friendships. Whether navigating ski lifts for the first time or enjoying spirited snowball fights, the students discovered a new appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors and the power of shared experiences. As they returned home, they carried with them memories of an unforgettable adventure and a stronger sense of community.

YEAR 9: WHITSUNDAYS The Year 9 Whitsundays Camp offered an incredible opportunity for students to grow as individuals while forging stronger connections with their peers. This unique experience provided a balance of exploration, adventure, and relaxation, leaving everyone with cherished memories of Queensland’s natural beauty.

The journey began bright and early on 17 June, with students boarding a plane at sunrise, filled with anticipation.

“The weather is rad!” shared Dean upon landing, as the group stepped into the sunny and humid Whitsundays.

A relaxed afternoon of settling in at the resort, enjoying delicious meals, and exploring the surroundings set the tone for the days ahead.

On Day 2, students embarked on a thrilling crocodile safari along the Proserpine River. Guided tours introduced them to local wildlife and their habitats, including impressively sized crocodiles. A refreshing barbecue lunch followed, offering time to reflect on the day’s discoveries.

The highlight for many came on Day 3, as the group set out for the worldfamous Whitsunday Islands. Equipped with wetsuits and snorkels, students explored the vibrant marine life of the Great Barrier Reef. From majestic stingrays and parrotfish to century-old clams, every moment was filled with awe and excitement. The students enjoyed Daydream Island, where they hiked to the pools for a refreshing swimming session to cool off.

Throughout the camp, students expressed gratitude for the dedication of their teachers and the camp staff. As they returned home, the cohort carried with them unforgettable memories of adventure, camaraderie, and personal growth, eager to share their exciting stories with their families.

2024 CAMPS YEAR 9: WHITSUNDAYS & TASMANIA

YEAR 9: TASMANIA In Term 2, a group of Year 9 students embarked on an unforgettable journey through Northern, Eastern and Southern Tasmania.

The camp was designed to foster confidence, resilience and independence while immersing students in the region’s lush landscapes and rich history.

The adventure began in Hobart, where the group set out for the Tahune Air Walk tour. Traversing the rugged terrain, students braved the heavy rain and marveled at the distinct flora and unique wildlife that sets Tasmania apart from our home state of Victoria.

Each day presented a new and exciting experience. The historical exploration continued with a detailed tour of Port Arthur, offering insights into the lives of convicts and colonial settlers. The group toured prison cells, chapels, and government housing, learning about the daily struggles and stories of those who lived there. A cruise around the harbor provided further perspective, as the guide painted a vivid picture of the surrounding landscapes and their historical significance.

Students enjoyed the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area, where there was an abundance of nature and wildlife waiting to be discovered. Cradle Mountain was a highlight for many students, offering moss-covered ancient rainforests and deep river gorges, as well as a huge array of walking tracks which provided the opportunity to encounter Tasmanian devils, quolls, platypuses, echidna and wombats.

At Cataract Gorge, students enjoyed breathtaking views from the chairlift and took photographs of the ancient rock gorge.

Upon reflection, students felt that the camp was not just an exploration of new places, but a journey of personal and collective growth.

YEAR 11: JAPAN In 2024, a spirited group of Year 11 students, and their staff companions, once again embarked on the Southern Cross Grammar Japan Tour. Designed to immerse students in Japanese culture and experiences, the trip proved to be an unforgettable journey filled with discovery and delight.

“We left Ginza, with its stylish shops and lively vibe, and headed to the centre of Tokyo City. The change from Ginza’s neat streets to the history-rich sights we saw caught our attention. Tokyo’s busy energy gave way to the thoughtful charm of old landmarks.”

Over 10 days, the group explored Japan’s main island of Honshu, beginning in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo. Greeted by the heat and humidity upon arrival, the group didn’t let it slow them down. From navigating the vibrant streets of Asakusa, to exploring the shopping district in Ginza, every moment in Tokyo was action-packed. The group embraced Japan’s unique customs, politeness, and culture with enthusiasm, relying on their basic Japanese phrases to navigate busy streets and shop for snacks at the local convenience stores.

Leaving Tokyo, the group ventured to Kyoto, which offered a rich tapestry of experiences, from the walks along the Kamo River and the energy of Nishiki Markets, to the picturesque and serene views of the surrounding terrain. The group was captivated by every moment, but it was the food that stole the show - succulent meats, fresh vegetables, and even the simple joys of vending machine drinks and convenience store sandwiches.

One of the trips’s most memorable cultural experiences were the visits to the peaceful temples and shrines. Many of these sites held historical significance to the Japanese people and today is still a place of peace and reflection.

After a trip to Nara to meet the local deer, the group enjoyed visiting a lively local karake establishment where they even convinced Mr Dodd to have a go!

The journey continued to Hiroshima, where a visit to the Peace Memorial Museum evoked deep reflection of the tragedies of war. The somber atmosphere matched the heavy emotions of the day. Following the tour students observed the Shinto shrines and monuments on Miyajima Island, including the iconic Torii Gate. They enjoyed the local soba noodle dishes, which refreshed their energy after a long day.

A highlight in Hiroshima was their visit to to Okunoshima, popularly known as Rabbit Island. Fluffy rabbits roamed the island freely, and hopped towards the students, nibbling on any food being offered.

Upon heading back to Tokyo for their final days, students made use of their extra time shopping and enjoying a delicious dinner, of which they could view the beautiful sunset over Tokyo. They visited the bustling Shibuya Crossing and explored the trendy streets of Harajuku.

As the group returned to Australia, they carried with them countless memories and a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. With gratitude for their journey and their learnings, many expressed a shared sentiment: they would return to Japan again in a heartbeat!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY This year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) at Southern Cross Grammar was a celebration of empowerment, community action, and the recognition of women’s achievements.

The SCG community came together to honor the occasion through inspiring guest speakers, impactful fundraising efforts, and student-led initiatives.

Alumna Kinda shared a moving account of her journey to personal agency, crediting her mother as a profound role model in shaping her confidence and ambition. Her speech encouraged women to embrace their aspirations and take bold steps toward their goals.

We were also privileged to hear from Yusur Al-Azzawi, a human rights lawyer with a remarkable career in defending refugee rights and democratic freedoms. Yusur’s insights into her advocacy work highlighted the transformative power of resilience and education in driving meaningful change.

This theme carried through to our annual Mother’s Day afternoon tea, where Ayfer Berdilek from the Caroline Chisholm Society shed light on their vital work supporting young women and families in need. The event served as a platform to raise funds for this important cause, with the Parents and Friends Committee (PFC) leading the charge to support the society’s programs.

The celebrations culminated in SCG’s enthusiastic participation in the Mother’s Day Classic, where students organised the school’s involvement in this national event to raise funds for breast and ovarian cancer research.

The initiative reflected the school’s commitment to fostering a sense of community and social responsibility among students.

These events showcased SCG’s dedication to empowering individuals, celebrating diversity, and contributing meaningfully to causes that matter to our community.

SCG COMMUNITY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY & ANZAC DAY

LEST WE FORGET ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day were both observed this year, with our students proudly representing SCG at both our own special assemblies, and at local services.

Our ANZAC Day Assemblies were joined by local RSL representatives Ross Wiltshire and Carolyn West. This poignant ceremony honoured the sacrifices of those who served, offering a heartfelt moment of reflection.

A selection of our students were involved in the production and premiere of the RSL documentary Those Who Serve. Many guests from the Caroline Springs RSL Sub Branch, local government and council members were in attendance, and it was deeply rewarding to reconnect with Southern Cross Grammar friends and families.

Our student leaders exemplified our school values through their respectful participation in the ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services. The heartfelt ceremonies stood as a powerful reminder of the unity and strength we gain by honouring the past and building a future grounded in respect and gratitude. Our students in attendance proudly demonstrated SCG’s genuine commitment to contributing meaningfully to the broader community.

HOLI This year, the SCG oval was transformed into a vibrant canvas as the school community came together to celebrate Holi, the festival of colours.

The air was alive with energy, laughter, and a burst of hues as students led the initiative to bring this cultural tradition to life. Guided by the passion and creativity of our diverse student body, the event became a powerful expression of cultural pride and inclusivity.

Holi offered a unique opportunity for the entire SCG community to connect, learn, and share in the joy of a tradition deeply meaningful to many of our students and families. The celebration not only enriched our understanding of cultural heritage but also reminded us that some lessons—about unity, joy, and connection—are best experienced beyond the pages of a book. It was a day of colour, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories for all.

HARMONY DAY Harmony Day at Southern Cross Grammar was a vibrant celebration of the diversity and shared values that make our community so strong.

The campus came alive with a parade of football jumpers, traditional dress, pride flags, and neurodivergence, national flags and world religions, each a proud symbol of the unique identities that form the fabric of SCG. This day wasn’t just about celebrating differences—it was about honoring the bonds that unite us as one.

As Brene Brown aptly reminds us, “Fitting in is the opposite of belonging.” Harmony Day highlighted belonging in its truest form, where every individual is valued and included.

In a year marked by devastating global conflicts, our community’s celebration of unity and respect carried even greater significance. Harmony Day was a reminder of the importance of coming together, embracing diversity, and reinforcing the values that hold us together in hope and strength.

MOTHER’S DAY & FATHER’S DAY Our annual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events open our school grounds to the wider SCG community, celebrating and honouring our loved ones and special friends.

Our Southern Cross Grammar community is enriched by the love, care, and dedication of mothers, fathers, and countless other significant figures who shape the lives of our students. As per tradition, this year we came together once again to honour these remarkable role models, celebrating their profound impact as nurturing and guiding influences.

The Mother’s Day afternoon tea and Father’s Day breakfast were both standout events on our school calendar. Both occasions were filled with warmth, joy, and a sense of togetherness that underscored the bonds within our vibrant community. Familiar faces lit with happiness created a truly special atmosphere as we celebrated the incredible contributions of these cherished individuals.

Adding to the festivities were the thoughtful PFC-organised stalls that preceded each celebration. These provided students with the chance to select meaningful gifts and cards, allowing them to express their heartfelt gratitude to their loved ones.

These moments of thoughtfulness and care were a testament to the value our school places on fostering appreciation and connection.

The success of these events would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our PFC volunteers, SCG staff, and student volunteers. BOOK WEEK In 2024, Southern Cross Grammar once again came alive with the magic of stories during the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week. This year’s theme, ‘Reading is Magic’ celebrated the transformative power of reading to spark imagination.

Throughout the week, students across the Primary School were immersed in rich literary experiences. The CBCA shortlisted books inspired lively discussions and explorations, with each story offering opportunities to meet new characters, journey to different worlds, and develop reading fluency. Excitement peaked during the annual Book Week assembly when the Primary teachers all dressed up in blue, to represent their favourite book this year, Bowerbird Blues.

Across all year levels, students engaged with stories in creative and meaningful ways. Students shared stories and read books together in classrooms, creating their own collages, chalk paint drawings and origami birds - each according to the theme of the book.

The grand finale was the Book Week extravaganza, a joyful celebration of creativity and community. Students proudly showcased their vibrant costumes on the red carpet, joined by families and teachers in a spirit of unity and festivity. Book Week 2024 was a testament to the power of stories to inspire, and we can’t wait to see what next year’s celebration will bring!

GRANDPARENTS DAY Grandparents’ Day at SCG is always a highlight of the school calendar, and this year was no exception.

The day was filled with warmth, laughter, and a true sense of community as we welcomed many grandparents and special friends into our Primary School.

It was heartwarming to see our classrooms and learning spaces bustling with energy and joy. Grandparents joined their grandchildren in reading, sharing stories, and exploring the wonders of books together. These moments not only celebrated the timeless bond between generations but also reinforced our ongoing commitment to fostering a love of reading in our students. Watching the younger and older generations connect through shared stories was a powerful reminder of the role books play in bringing us together.

The day also highlighted our school’s focus on connection.

At SCG, we believe that meaningful relationships are the foundation of a strong and supportive learning environment.

Grandparents’ Day was an opportunity to celebrate these relationships and to show our gratitude for the important role that grandparents play in the lives of our students. Their presence in our school community enriches our culture and strengthens the bonds that tie us together.
