counts the bedrooms, and the conversation turns to who is can stay. At Pinebrook Haven, a sixbedroom home in the gated Lake Arrowhead community in Waleska, Georgia, there is room for sixteen guests to make those plans together. It is easy to picture the first night here. Groceries come in, bags find their rooms, and someone starts cooking while the children explore downstairs. Before long, a pool game is underway and the conversation has moved out to the deck. There is time to catch up with the people you usually see across a holiday table, without trying to fit the whole visit into one afternoon. This issue of The Comfort Collective takes you through the spaces that make Pinebrook Haven work for a gathering of that size, from its family sleeping arrangements to the outdoor places where everyone can spend a little more time together. DINNER AT THE CABIN An October weekend at Lake Arrowhead leaves room for a day in town. After breakfast, gather whoever wants to come along and head into Canton, where the historic downtown and The Mill on Etowah offer different ways to spend an afternoon. There are shops worth taking your time in, places to stop for coffee, and food businesses that can help with the evening’s meal. Begin Downtown Start with coffee at Bizarre Coffee on East Marietta Street, then give yourself time to explore the downtown shops. A morning without a long itinerary makes room for the window that catches your eye or the store someone else wants to visit. Canton’s locally owned businesses give the afternoon its character. Chamberhouse on West Main Street is one shopping stop, while Menagerie on Main offers another reason to explore that end of downtown. Let each person choose a place to stop, rather than trying to move the whole family through every shop together.
Frik & Frak Market, on Lower Union Hill Road in Canton, is a separate stop to consider for that part of the day. The business offers coffee, baked goods, lunch, and gourmet meals, along with featured local products. Check its current menu before visiting, particularly if you are planning food for a large group. An Evening Back at Pinebrook Back at Pinebrook Haven, shopping bags can wait while everyone finds their place for the evening. Someone gets dinner started in the kitchen, another takes charge of the flat-top grill, and the children head downstairs to see who is ready for a game. Set out the food and let the conversation continue between the dining area and the deck. There is no reservation time to keep and no need to hurry.
A Cone to Pick on West Main Street offers an ice cream break, and Le Macaron on North Street gives the pastry lovers another option. Pick something for now, or something to take back for later. Spend an Afternoon at The Mill The Mill on Etowah brings another part of Canton’s history into the day. The former cotton mill on the banks of the Etowah River now houses shops and restaurants, giving visitors a place to explore the old industrial setting while spending time with the businesses that occupy it today. 4 THE COMFORT COLLECTIVE
