Animal Welfare League QLD Beenleigh House Fire Tragedy Presents ‘Northern Gold Coast claims another life The mother of a three-year-old boy killed in a unit fire at Beenleigh has Pet Adoption Carnival’ died in hospital.

The Animal Welfare League QLD is throwing a Pet Adoption Carnival to showcase their beautiful animals looking for their furever homes at the Beenleigh Rehoming Centre.

This event will be held at the AWLQ Beenleigh Rehoming Centre, Rossmans Road, Stapylton on Saturday September 12th from 10am2pm.

The Pet Adoption Carnival will feature activities for the whole family throughout the day including; dog agility demonstrations, dog dancing display, puppy cuddling, puppy training classes, showcasing of programs run by AWLQ, cheerleading squad, live band and a car park op shop sale.

Activities just for the kids include; jumping castle, visit from Peppa Pig, face painting, animal art and craft corner, guinea pig cuddling and responsible small animal care information.

Refreshments will be available on site, including veggie burgers, toasties and pikelets stalls and a cake and goodies stall.

The main focus of this event is the rehoming of shelter animals in a family fun day packed with entertainment.

Communications Manager Brooke Whitney says the AWLQ is looking forward to showing the community their centre in a fun and creative way.

“Our Beenleigh Rehoming Centre has great training programs for the animals in care including the puppy raisers program which was created to ensure puppies start toilet training and basic command training early,” Ms Whitney says Further information and updates can be found on the AWLQ Facebook page or visit www.awlqld.com.au

Crystal Cartledge, 30, was rescued from her two-storey flat in Beenleigh on Sunday night by neighbours, who punched through glass to save her.

Donations from neighbours and strangers have poured in via the Logan House Fire Support Network, with $11,000 raised so far.

Redlands residents living in high fire risk areas of the city have voted unanimously to form a rural fire brigade in the Mount Cotton/Sheldon area.

More than 100 landowners attending a public meeting on Sunday endorsed a move to seek registration of a new volunteer brigade by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

The meeting heard that Mt Cotton and surrounds were considered among the highest fire risk areas in Queensland.

Mayor Karen Williams, who hosted the meeting, said Redland City had a number of areas vulnerable to fire and preparedness was very important. “A volunteer fire brigade can help you be prepared, and that is why we are here today,� she said. “For a brigade to be formed it needs will and commitment; there is clearly the interest judging from the roll-up today.�

Redland City Division 6 Councillor Julie Talty said she had been approached by many residents concerned about fire risk.

Redland City Council Service Manager Disaster Planning and Operations Mike Lollback said he had never seen such a swell of community support for action.

Mr Lollback said recent history of fires on North Stradbroke Island highlighted the fire risk and the need for communities to take steps to protect themselves. “I am confident the urban fire brigades in the city have the capacity to deal with fires but the more arrows you have in the quiver the better. A rural fire brigade would be another option,� he said.

Logan City Council Supports Aqualogan Laurie Lawrence Swim Football Queensland’s Bid For School Named National Recognised Swim Centre Of The Year State Funding To Upgrade Its he Aqualogan Laurie Lawrence Swim School has been named the National Recognised Swim Centre of the Year 2014 by AUSTSWIM, the body that provides industry accreditation for swimming and water safety New Home At Meakin Park teachers throughout Australia.

Logan City Council supports Football Queensland’s bid for State funding to upgrade its new home at Meakin Park.

Logan City Council will write to the Queensland Government in support of a submission from Football Queensland to be provided with $1.3 million in funding from the profits generated by Australia hosting the AFC Asian Cup earlier this year.

Queensland hosted a total of seven matches during Asia’s biggest sporting event, including the Socceroos’ Quarter-Final win over China PR. Football Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Foster said the funding would be earmarked to upgrade two pitches to international standard at the new Home of Football in Queensland at Meakin Park at Slacks Creek, Logan.

Football Queensland intends to now lodge its application with the state government with a view to commencing upgrade work as soon as funding can be secured.

“Our needs are immediate as many affiliate clubs in the Logan region are at capacity and having to turn players away,” Mr Foster said.

“We hope to work closely with them and grow participation particularly in the social and female football spaces.”

Council is currently undertaking the replacement of Deep Chinghee Bridge on Chinghee Creek Rd, with the ageing timber structure making way for a new pre-fabricated crossing constructed from composite fibre and concrete at a cost of approximately $300,000.

Mayor John Brent said the new bridge was the second in Scenic Rim to utilise composite fibre technology as part of the building process.

“Earlier this year, Council replaced Kriederman Bridge on Pacer Ave in Beaudesert with a similar structure. It’s real cutting edge stuff,” he said.

“Normally this type of bridge structure is pre-fabricated, fully assembled at the factory for inspection and then dismantled for transport to the construction site. The bridge is then reassembled on the abutments at the final site.

“However, given the relatively compact dimensions of the replacement Deep Chinghee Bridge, it was identified that both time and money could be saved by transporting the bridge in its constructed state directly from the factory in Toowoomba.”

Cr Brent said he commended both the Council staff involved and the bridge fabricator for delivering a cost-effective outcome for the organisation and the community.

Scenic Rim showcased in new edition of visitor guide Scenic Rim’s popular visitor guide has been updated with a new edition, showcasing the region’s spectacular scenery, wonderful attractions and wide range of recreational activities.

The 2015 edition of the guide will be available at this weekend’s Beaudesert Show and from Visitor Information Centres throughout the Scenic Rim and beyond in the coming days.

Mayor John Brent said the Scenic Rim Visitor Guide provided a comprehensive overview of all there is to see and do throughout the region and an insight into some of its interesting places and personalities.

Cr Brent said 90,000 copies of the current Scenic Rim Visitor Guide had been distributed over the past 18 months.

“The popularity of the publication reflects the fact Scenic Rim continues to be a top destination for both holidaymakers and daytrippers. At last count our tourism industry was worth $150 million to the regional economy,” he said.

“Council is committed to supporting our the important role of our tourism sector through strong partnerships with the industry and local operators, the promotion of the Scenic Rim brand, and attracting eventbased visitation through initiatives such as Eat Local Week.”

Cr Brent said the Scenic Rim offered a vast array of experiences to suit everyone from couples and families to cultural tourists and adventureseekers.

The Scenic Rim Visitor Guide will be available from all Council Customer Service Centres, Libraries and Visitor Information Centres.
