One Nation gas shutdown A One Nation proposal to dramatically cut gas supplies in far south-west Queensland will push up electricity prices and cost jobs.

State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said revelations that One Nation Party was calling for – either by mistake or political opportunism – the shutdown of a major gas region was a stunning intervention into national energy debate.

“This proposal would deny Queensland industry and Queensland jobs almost decades of gas supply,” Dr Lynham said.

“The LNP is prepared to do deals with One Nation. The LNP needs to rule out once and for all – doing a deal with One Nation before or after the Queensland election. If not, the LNP stands for less gas, more expensive electricity and fewer jobs.

“When the rest of Australia is seeking more sources of gas, One Nation wants to cut it off. This region have been producing petroleum and gas for Australian industry for 50 years.”

“Cut off gas supply and two things will happen – electricity prices increase and Australian jobs go.

“Exploration and extraction of gas is subject to State and/or Federal environmental assessment, including impacts on groundwater.

“Queensland has done the hard work to develop our gas reserves for domestic and export markets.

“Queensland gas is helping put downward pressure on electricity prices for Australian homes and businesses.”

Eats & Beats heads back to where it all started

This month’s Eats & Beats pop-up food truck and music festival is heading back to where it all began more than two years ago.

City Image Committee Chairperson, Councillor Laurie Smith, said Eats & Beats has proven to be popular with the City of Logan’s residents and visitors since the first one was held at the IKEA and Logan Super Centre Forecourt.

“Since it was launched it 2015, Eats & Beats has been a big hit especially with families,” Cr Smith said.

“It’s a great way for families to get together and enjoy a night of delicious food and great entertainment under the stars.”

There will be something for everyone on Friday night, with more than 30 food trucks serving a huge variety of delicious food, as well as an exciting entertainment line-up.

Johanna & Jayden, The Kangagang, JEZELLE, and Jahbutu, Alvin and Trix, Special Guests will rock the main stage from 5pm to 9pm.

Milestone for another great Games legacy

With 190 days to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Parklands project at Southport is complete, with works now underway to transform it into the Games Village.

Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said the $550 million Parklands project would offer a home away from home for 6600 athletes and officials from across the Commonwealth when it is remodelled as the Games Village.

“The Parklands is one of the most significant urban renewal projects undertaken on the Gold Coast.

“Over the past two years, the Gold Coast community has watched the project’s 18 buildings rise from the ground, with nine tower cranes dominating the city’s skyline.

“More than 6000 workers helped build the Parklands and today we celebrate everyone’s achievements as we look forward to welcoming the athletes and officials to the future Games Village.”

Minister Jones said the Parklands project includes 1252 dwellings, including one and two bedroom apartments, and three bedroom townhouses.

“It’s one of the biggest and most important Games legacies of all,” Ms Jones said.

Story winners loving life in the Redlands A love of life in the Redlands has been captured in verse, prose, film and photographs by the winners of the Our Redlands Story Competition announced today.

The competition, part of Redland City Council’s development of a brand which best defines the city, encouraged Redlanders to share stories about their home and what it meant to them.

In congratulating the winners and runners-up, Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the entries showed a strong sense that the Redlands, its lifestyle and natural beauty was indeed special.

“There’s a beautifully illustrated message in a bottle, love stories, reflections on good times and wonderful experiences but, above all, a sense that our city is a really great place to be,’’ Cr Williams said.

“A lot of passion for the Redlands was shown through the entries, with a common thread that we are indeed fortunate to call the Redlands home.’’

Cr Williams said the competition had provided an excellent expression of how locals felt about their city which would be invaluable in developing a brand which captured the essence of the Redlands.

“Our entries told of a relaxed life by the bay surrounded by a wonderful environment, wildlife and community … and with so many opportunities to get outdoors and get active,’’ Cr Williams said.

“These stories, photographs, videos, pictures, poems and even a song help define what’s unique about our city, how it makes us feel, what it gives us back and what we love about it.

“Our major prize winners were quite outstanding, with Veronica MahoneyHodges’ great take on just how wonderful it is to get home to the Redlands, Jo Dickson’s ‘Dancing Mangroves’, a captivating story in a bottle, Jennifer Parker’s inspiring imagery in ‘My Redlands. My Home. My Heritage’, Lexy and Leah Lever’s musical tribute and Mike Selvage’s lovely verse all top class.

Lotus Vana Resort Logan Village ... continued from page 1 The program commenced on Friday, 7th July 2017 and now a regular group of seniors get together every Friday to catch up with their new found friends, have a laugh, join in the activities and enjoy a chat over a cuppa.

Lotus Vana Resort Incorporated (LVRI), a not-for profit, aged care and disability services provider realised there was a need for this type of program in the Logan Village area. LVRI’s aim is for our seniors in the local community to come along, enjoy meeting new people, join in the activities planned for the day and have fun. We are also very aware of how much full time carers need to have some time to themselves and this gives them this opportunity.

A fully qualified Aged Care Worker is in attendance at all times, together with Volunteers who are fully inducted by Lotus Vana Resort Management Committee.

Metro South Health Board Chair Terry White retires Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick has paid tribute to long-serving Metro South Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Terry White AO, who today announced his retirement. “I want to thank Terry for his leadership, insight and commitment to the health service over the past ďŹ ve years,â€? Mr Dick said. “Metro South is one of our largest hospital and health services and caters for one of the most culturally diverse communities in the country. Providing leadership to such a diverse and dynamic region is a challenging task. “I commend Terry on his calm and steady stewardship of the organisation, and acknowledge his personal commitment to the work of delivering quality health services to the residents of the Metro South region. “I wish Terry and his family well and thank him for his service.â€?

Mr White said the most inspiring part of his time as Board Chair had been working with health service sta. “This has been one of my greatest career highlights and an honour to work alongside so many passionate, caring, hard-working individuals who come here every day to deliver extraordinary care for our patients and community,â€? Mr White said. “It has also been both a pleasure and a privilege to work with such an outstanding Board and executive leadership team.â€?

Queensland’s young female entrepreneurs join virtual world café Queensland’s young female entrepreneurs will have a platform to discuss their main challenges next week when they attend a virtual world café being held concurrently in six locations across the state.

In a first for Queensland, this virtual world café will use video-conferencing in collaboration spaces in Brisbane’s CBD, Wynnum, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Mackay and Cairns on Thursday, 5October.

Small Business Minister Leeanne Enoch said today (Monday) the Palaszczuk Government recognises and appreciates the valuable contribution women in business make to the state’s economy.

“Supporting women in business is a core component of our Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy 2016-20,” said Ms Enoch.

“The world virtual café is taking a unique approach to understand more about the needs of young women in business and to identify opportunities to support and enable them.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to raise issues they find challenging, and hear from established female business owners who have been through the tough years of starting a business and are keen to share their experiences.”

The event will see guest speakers Pip Russell of Network Ten and Juiced TV, and Rebecca Medcalf of skin-care brand Organic Index, share their experiences as young female entrepreneurs.

Outcomes from the virtual café will be used to help the government better support and enable young women in business.

Queensland female small business owners can now access increased support, networking and development opportunities under new Palaszczuk Government partnerships with industry associations and organisations.

Small Business Minister Leeanne Enoch said today (Tuesday) the partnerships are designed to encourage more women to start and grow their own business.

“I am so pleased to welcome our partners the University of Southern Queensland, YWCA Queensland, Queensland Farmers’ Federation, Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland and the Cairns Chamber of Commerce with James Cook University,” Ms Enoch said.

“These organisation are working with government to deliver initiatives to encourage more women to start and grow their business through activities such as forums and mentoring sessions, and by connecting with women in business groups.

“This development is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Advancing Women in Business initiative, under our $22.7 million Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy 2016-20.

“Women make a very valuable contribution to the small businesses and regional economies of Queensland - they make up 34 per cent of all business operations in Australia.

“When our strategy was released last year, extensive statewide consultation with a cross-section of women in business was undertaken. The main challenges they faced range from developing networks and business confidence to balancing work and home and considering culture and diversity.

“Bridging skill gaps, support for young women in business, and a lack of awareness of available services, mentors and grant funding were also identified.

“These new industry partnerships will go a long way to addressing these challenges and encouraging more women to start and grow their business,” she said.

Grand Master Russell Macarthur 8th Dan Black Belt has been training for over 35 years in the art and is one of the most senior instructors in Qld. Back to Work program delivers for local jobseekers Ipswich employers are being encouraged to hire a jobseeker and put themselves into line for support payments of up to $20,000 per worker under the Palaszczuk Government’s Back to Work jobs program.

Assistant Minister of State Assisting The Premier and Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard today visited a local business which had taken advantage of the program to hire a local jobseeker.

Ms Howard said it was fantastic to see local businesses including Stroud Homes hiring workers.

“Ipswich employers are getting right behind our Back to Work program,” she said.

“This highly successful program has already supported 7,500 Queenslanders into jobs, including pending applications, and these numbers are growing by the day.

“I say to Ipswich employers out there, if you’re thinking of hiring, get in touch with our local Back to Work team to put yourself in line for support payments of up to $20,000.”

Employment Minister Grace Grace said: “Businesses often need that extra bit of confidence to take someone on board and this program is delivering that confidence in spades.

“The Back to Work program is supporting thousands of Queenslanders in jobs and injecting millions of dollars into local economies.”
