Asbestos dumping a costly clean-up

VOLUNTEER VISITORS NEEDED

Recent illegal asbestos dumping at Redland Bay and Sheldon has raised health and safety concerns and left Redland City Council and local ratepayers bearing a costly $8000 clean-up bill. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said suspected asbestos material had recently been dumped at Double Jump Road, Redland Bay and West Mount Cotton Road, Sheldon. “Council was made aware of two locations where building debris containing asbestos had been illegally dumped where residents can freely access it, which is very concerning,â€? she said. “Council oďŹƒcers moved quickly to secure and clean-up the sites to keep residents safe. “Since August 2015 there has been 10 reported incidents of asbestos dumping in the Redlands – it beggars belief that these dumpers are willing to put the safety of others at risk. Cr Williams said Council had taken a tough stance on illegal dumping, installing surveillance cameras that are moved throughout the city to various spots. “Council oďŹƒcers also undertake spot checks on locations known for illegal dumping. “Despite this proactive monitoring we can’t be everywhere, so we also rely on public assistance and are calling on the public to dob in these dumpers because ultimately it’s the entire community who is placed at risk and who bears the costs. “Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity, or has any information on illegal dumping, should contact Council or report it to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection online or by calling 13 74 68. “Illegal dumping of any material is taken very seriously and can incur ďŹ nes of up to $121,000.â€? In Redlands, asbestos can be properly disposed of at Council’s Birkdale Transfer Station. For free disposal of domestic asbestos it must be double wrapped in 0.2mm thick (durable) plastic sheeting, fully sealed and must be less than 10m2 or 250kg. Asbestos disposal charges apply for commercial customers and the amount is also limited to 10m2 or 250kg. More information can be found on Council’s website. Council is continuing its investigations into the recent asbestos dumping. For more information visit www.redland.qld.gov.au

Get spotting Glossy Black-Cockatoos Help conserve a vulnerable local species by volunteering for the annual Glossy Black-Cockatoo survey this month. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said sharp eyes were needed in Redlands on Sunday 30 October searching for Glossy Black-Cockatoos or the tell-tale signs they leave behind. “These magniďŹ cent birds are a vulnerable species in Redlands and it can be diďŹƒcult to spot them, or where they’ve been, without knowing what to look for,â€? Cr Williams said. “Unlike some of their noisier counterparts, these cockatoos are quieter and harder to ďŹ nd. “To make sure our volunteers have the best chance of ďŹ nding these secretive glossy-blacks, we are asking people to come along to one of two free Glossy BlackCockatoo workshops at IndigiScapes before the survey. WEEKL Ytime commitment you get the great “It’s easy to get involved and with just a small

reward of knowing you are helping to conserve a fascinating bird species.â€? Workshops will be held at the Redland IndigiScapes Centre on Sunday 23 October (morning) and Wednesday 26 October (evening). At the workshops volunteers will hone their bird identiďŹ cation skills and be assigned their survey area for the day. To get bird spotting, people can register their attendance at a workshop by calling IndigiScapes on 3824 8611 or visiting their website. Glossy Black-Cockatoos are solitary or travel in small groups of two or three birds. The smallest of the black-cockatoos, they only feed on the cones of two she-oaks, and only from particular trees. Breeding occurs once every two years, producing only one egg. The Glossy BlackCockatoo requires trees with large nesting hollows to breed. The survey is an initiative of the Glossy-Black Conservancy, a partnership between government and industry stakeholders working to conserve the Glossy BlackP Cockatoo across south-east Queensland.

Logan City Council and Brisbane Lions deliver sporting equipment to clubs

The Beenleigh Artisan Distillery’s new visitor centre has been named the overall winner of the 2016 Logan Urban Design Awards. The striking modern cellar door design introduced to the Distillery’s entrance by Blueprint Architects was praised for re-imagining the iconic Beenleigh business while respecting its heritage. Held every two years, the Logan Urban Design Awards (LUDA) showcase excellence in the design and creation of urban environments both large and small within the City of Logan. Planning and Development Chairperson, Cr Russell Lutton, said the award winners across all categories had used clever design to create excellent community spaces that, in some cases, also put a surprising twist on conventional buildings. “This year the awards recognised Extraction Artisan Coffee in Springwood, which not only introduced an interesting contemporary retail space to that area but is also working with neighbouring businesses to create a new sense of community there,” Cr Lutton said. “The Jimboomba Community Garden, another winner this year, has also created a space where people can meet to learn about and share tips on sustainable gardening practices. “These are great examples of where thoughtful spaces draw in and generate positive social outcomes. “Great design is more than just eye-catching angles and dramatic features; it should be able to draw inspiration from the natural environment around it and create spaces that are not only fresh and exciting but that also grow to become much loved community assets. The 2016 Logan Urban Design Awards were sponsored by the BMD Group, Ridgemill, MBM, Colin Biggers and Paisley, Clean Management Solutions Pty Ltd and Project Management Services. For more information about this year’s winners and commended entries, please visit www.logan.qld.gov.au/urbandesignawards

Christmas has come early for 20 junior sporting clubs in Logan with almost $20,000 in sporting equipment to be delivered to clubs across the city in the coming months. The grants have been made possible through a partnership between the Logan City Council and the Brisbane Lions under the Logan Sports Development Program, which also provides up to $70,000 a year in travel assistance to Logan-based individuals and teams attending state, national and international competitions. Councillor Steve Swenson, Chair of the Sports and Community Services Committee said the partnership had provided $450,000 in travel assistance to almost 800 applicants since 2012 and sporting equipment grants were becoming a regular part of the program. “We are now providing two grant rounds a year – to provide support for junior summer and winter sports as well as maintaining the travel assistance grants,” he said. “This is the third round of grants for equipment designed to support and encourage junior participation in a wide range of sports. Greg Swann, CEO of the Brisbane Lions, said the Club was proud to be part of the Logan community. “We see this program as a fantastic opportunity to help local sportspeople achieve their goals,” said Mr Swann. “As a Club, we do thousands of hours of work in the community every year – it’s something at the heart of everything we do.” To find out more about the various grants on offer, assistance, conditions and training courses go to Logan City Council’s website at: www.logan.qld.gov.au/community-support/grants/sport-recreationand-community-funding

Disability housing robot technology breaking new ground The ground has been broken on $1.3 million disability housing project in Alexandra Hills, set to feature new state of the art assistive technologies, including a NAO Robot, to help future residents live independently. Turning the first sod on the project today, Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the two three-bedroom duplexes, constructed as part of the Elderly Parent Care Innovation Initiative (EPCII), would accommodate five local people with disability and a live-in carer. “Once built, these two homes will incorporate innovative technologies including automated controls for lighting and blinds, remote video monitoring and room temperature and movement sensors, as well as carer calling devices,” Mrs O’Rourke said. Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the innovation, tenacity, bravery and dedication shown by Queensland workers and businesses was inspiring. “The motorbike cop should never have returned to work, let alone regular duties,” Ms Grace said. “The motel manager also made a remarkable recovery after being held up at gun point and sexually assaulted, and the magnetic insulating mat will save lives in the electricity industry. “These are examples of the innovation and dedication that exist in Queensland when it comes to workplace health and safety. “The Safe Work and Return to Work Awards acknowledge the best examples in a number of categories, and these people and businesses are making a difference. “We are sharing their stories, hoping to inspire and encourage others to go that extra mile to make a difference. “This year’s best include small operations such as Metro Facades on the Gold Coast along with multi-nationals like Komatsu as well as not-for-profit organisation, Endeavour.” The Safe Work and Return to Work Awards, announced at a gala breakfast in Brisbane this morning, showcase excellence in safety or getting workers back to meaningful duties as soon as possible. The Safe Work and Return to Work Awards are a highlight of Safe Work Month which runs during October. In 2016, there were more than 40 finalists, with winners in 12 of the 13 categories. The Palaszczuk Government’s major reforms to senior assessment and tertiary entrance will now begin with Year 11 students in 2019. Education Minister Kate Jones today said current year 8 students would be the first to experience the new system. Ms Jones said she had received advice from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) that they would require an extra 12 months to deliver the most significant changes to senior schooling in more than 40 years. “Following the advice from QCAA I consulted with all major education stakeholders across sectors, principals associations and parents. All stakeholders supported the QCAA advice,” she said. “When we roll out the new system in 2019, I want to get it right and ensure it remains strong for many years to come. “I want what is best for Queensland students so I will take the advice of our key education stakeholders and won’t risk rushing this reform process. Queensland Catholic Education Commission Executive Director Leanne Perry said it was important not to rush the new syllabus development. “We are working towards a generational change in senior assessment and it’s vital for students and teachers that we ensure they’ve got the best possible system to work with,” Ms Perry said. Independent Schools Queensland Executive Director David Robertson said independent schools supported the QCAA timeline. “While independent schools were fully engaged and already well advanced in preparing for the senior schooling reforms, the additional year will ensure they have more time to plan and prepare staff and students for the changes,” he said. Extra funding to get more child safety angels on board Queensland’s dedicated Pyjama Angels will be able to spread their wings and help even more children in foster and kinship care thanks to an extra $180,000 in Queensland Government funding each year. Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman announced the extra funding at the Pyjama Foundation’s Chocolate Gala Dinner event at Portside Wharf in Brisbane last night (14 October). “This extra funding for the Pyjama Foundation means the organisation can have more of their Angels spending time with and reading to children living in out-of-home care,” she said. “The wonderful Pyjama Angels spend an hour each week reading to a child in foster or kinship care, playing literacy games and puzzles with them and assisting with their homework. “Last financial year, the foundation supported more than 1000 volunteers, with angels reading to the same number of foster children each week in Queensland. For more detailed horoscopes in relation to your finances, family, friendships Horoscopes and career visit: www.0800-horoscope.com

Aries Family: Expense appears to be on the rise sharply the 17th and 21th and most of it is necessities, big ticket items, placating members and solving problems. Starting Wednesday the 19th diďŹƒculties processing emotional problems appears extremely likely and if not addressed early in the day can escalate way out of control before noon. Karma Numbers: 6, 11, 15, 22, 60

Taurus Family: Spending appears to go on a sharp rise the 17th into the 18th, particularly with travel, longdistance feelings, vehicles, added vehicles, repairs, household appliances and any issues to do with foundation or roof. Long-range expense planning is also very likely. Karma Numbers: 6, 11, 12, 18, 22

Gemini Family: Your stars indicate the need to address all expenses, communications and planning or arrangements quickly and early in the week for the best results with the 17th straight through to the 19th being your best bet. Once the 18th takes root it becomes more diďŹƒcult to arrange, navigate and exact others. Karma Numbers: 0, 2, 10, 11, 12

Libra Family: Your stars show a spike in domestic spending especially for anything to do with travel, Transportation, the vehicle repairs or upgrades and even the purchase of big-ticket items that will have you making incremental payments far into the future, particularly the 18th. Karma Numbers: 4, 11, 14, 16, 46

Scorpio Family: Some of you show excellent cooperation, joyful news and other types of exciting events the 17th into the midday hours of the 18th and while this is highly likely, it should also be noted that you do also become vulnerable to minor levels of common illness, such as cold, sinus, throat, low back. Karma Numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

Sagittarius Family: Cooperation levels of pure good but spending on the city’s appears healthy near both the 18th 19th and again there the 21st and 22nd, in what may be two separate needs or two separate sets or groups of members... with Gemini, Libra, Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn. Karma Numbers: 3, 6, 11, 17, 36

Cancer

Capricorn

Family: Your stars show that many of you may be in some kind of deadline mode this week and while you may not be aware of it the 17th, 18th, when you tend to spend money, invest in domestic needs, shop and gather or “nest,... and provide... by the 19th and into the 20th. Karma Numbers: 6, 11, 12, 16, 66

Family: Your stars show a great deal of eort being placed into the 17th and 18th, with money ranking highest, investments of a heart and soul next and an eye on the future, particularly as far out as April or May of 2017 ranking next. Making travel or holiday plans or discussing and structuring the outline of such plans is entirely possible. Karma Numbers:3, 5, 6, 9, 59 and 1959

Leo

Aquarius

Family: Your stars show a good rate of cooperation the 18th and so using the 17th for structuring, scheduling and exchanging or deciding of ideas would be wise. Additionally, personal problems are likely to surface the 19th for members like Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn and Gemini. Karma Numbers: 11, 14, 21, 32, 45

Family: YYour stars show spending up the wazoo on the 17th, June 18th and on the 19th for what appears to be three dierent or separate needs in a row... causing a domino eect on your wallet. Gifting, placating members, vehicle repairs, upgrades or replacements and improvements to the domestic shell of your house. Karma Numbers:5, 11, 15, 55, 59

Virgo

Pisces

Family: Your star show a great deal of work and demands being juggled into the 17th and 18th, with seasonal needs, last minute demands, sudden change jobs, siblings and other types of minor details that may have been overlooked previously can cause abdominal or “House of Cardsâ€? eect. Karma Numbers: 0, 4, 6, 9, 16

Family: Your stars indicate a pleasant early start to your week with very good cooperation, however there may be some exchanges and arrangements that are a bit challenging, particularly if you have a big family event scheduled for the weekend of the 21st. Karma Numbers: 5, 11, 15, 51, 55, including 1955
