Grand Master Russell Macarthur 8th Dan Black Belt has been training for over 35 years in the art and is one of the most senior instructors in Qld. It is the biggest individual club in Qld with over 20 locations. All instructors are senior World Wide recognised black belts with many having trained for over 20 years.

We teach all levels and all physical abilities. The art is recognised for confidence building and encouraging discipline. The club is extremely active in the community via numerous charities. The club has made major donations of Wheelchairs, Typewriters for the Blind, supported ‘Mates for Mates’ for returned soldiers and even built a set of disabled toilets in a school in Nepal. The clubs current fundraising activities for 2017 is to support a rural respite centre for disabled children and the scouting movement.

Additionally we supply boards to Vision Australia at Coorparoo for the visually impaired to make many different items.

The club places a high emphasis on discipline, respect, safety of members , anti- bullying and Self- defence that works.

What we don’t do is treat you like a commercial product – all instructors are volunteers.

The club is very family orientated with many families participating across the network.

Treated with respect and according to individual ability whilst taking into account any disabilities sets this club apart from other martial arts, hence is enviable reputation Australia wide.

There are no contracts or minimum training periods. No annual registration fees either . It’s strictly month by month at the best prices in the market starting at $65 per month for a child/pensioner with a maximum family rate of $120 per month. This enables you to train at any club location at any time .The club fees are often 50% of those of our competitors.

For the first time ever Redland City Council’s Animal Shelter will host its Paw-Tober Fest event this Saturday 10am-2pm, a fun family day out – including for the furry family members on leads!

With a range of free activities for all ages, Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said that the Paw-Tober Fest event was a celebration of the much loved family pet and all the hard work done by the Shelter to rehome animals.

“Paw-Tober Fest is about the passion held by everyone at the Animal Shelter who tirelessly care for homeless and lost animals, providing them with a safe environment until they are claimed or adopted out to new forever homes,” Cr Williams said.

“With the fantastic new Animal Shelter facility, including its new retail space, now in second year of operations, this is a perfect time to share with animal lovers and pet owners this excellent community service provided by Council and at the same time take the opportunity to provide information and advice, discounted micro-chipping and to simply enjoy some food and music and have a fun day out with the family,” she said.

Mayor Williams also thanked the dedicated volunteers who walk, play with and clean up after the animals on a daily basis.

To further support the ongoing operations of the shelter’s adoption program people can also purchase the new 2018 Redland Animal Shelter calendar, featuring some of the shelter’s adoption success stories. Calendars will be available for sale at the Shelter and Council’s Customer Service Centres.

Following recent wet weather, Redland City Council is encouraging all residents to get on the front foot with mosquitoes and search their own backyards for possible breeding sites.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the rain, coupled with warmer weather, provided ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes but there were measures people could take to protect themselves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the recent wet conditions, Council will increase its inspections of known breeding sites and we encourage everyone to do the same in their own backyards, Cr Williams said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mosquitoes are endemic in our coastal environment and it is impossible to eradicate them completely, but everyone in the community can take simple steps to assist Council in our eďŹ&#x20AC;orts to reduce numbers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are often surprised how little water it takes for mosquitoes to breedâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; even the water at the bottom of a pot plant base is enough. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now is the perfect time to check your yard, emptying water pooling in items such as toys, boats, fallen palm fronds, blocked roof gutters and old tyres. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also timely to check your insect screens are in good condition, and in areas where mosquitos and biting midges are particularly prevalent, consider treating screens with a UV stable insecticide.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;For personal protection from biting midges and mosquitos residents should avoid being outside during peak activity periods at dusk and dawn where possible, use insect repellent and wear light-coloured, long, loose ďŹ tting clothing.â&#x20AC;?

Mayor Karen Williams said Council had a year-round comprehensive program to battle mosquitoes, paying particular attention to coastal areas such as the bay Islands and used a range of land, air and water-based treatment techniques. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We conduct both aerial treatments of larger sites following major tides or rain events, as well as our ongoing ground treatments,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We try to target the mosquito larvae or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;wrigglersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, before they can ďŹ&#x201A;y and bite and run an inspection program to monitor larvae numbers and the eďŹ&#x192;cacy of our treatments. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Council is unable to treat biting midge larvae, as their prime breeding grounds are natural coastal habitats where it is illegal to spray with the required insecticides.â&#x20AC;?

Council works with Queensland Health, Queensland Institute of Medical Research, local councils and other relevant industry bodies to research and evaluate mosquito management practices and emerging mosquito issues.

City of Logan celebrates our sporting heroes Track and field athlete Trae Williams was last night named Sportsperson of the Year at the Audi Centre Springwood 2017 City of Logan Sports Awards.

Mr Williams, who clocked 10.29 seconds in the Open Men’s 100m final to win the gold medal at the Australian Athletics Championship, was also recognised as Sportsman of the Year. He was a previous winner of the Young Sportsperson (Male) award.

City of Logan Mayor Luke Smith said a record 120 nominations were received for this year’s awards.

“Nominations were made for more than 30 different types of sports, including cable skiing, BMX, rugby, artistic roller skating and triathlon,” Mayor Smith said.

“These awards give us an opportunity to celebrate our local sporting heroes and their achievements, as well as the contributions of coaches, officials and organisers.

“I am honoured to be able to acknowledge their dedication on behalf of the city.”

The awards, presented at a gala dinner at the Logan Metro Sports Centre, also featured sporting legends Ian Healy, Layne Beachley and Laurie Lawrence as special guests.

The winners were: Wilma Perkins, who represented Australia in the women’s 65-69 age group in the Athletics World Masters, was named Sportswoman of the Year.

Young Sportsperson (Male) of the Year was awarded to Dray Ngatuere-Wroe, who played in the U18s Nev Blair Rugby League competition and was selected in the Mal Meninga squad for 2017. He has also been selected to attend the Queensland Academy of Sport development camp next year.

Miela Goodchild, a gold medallist at the U17 Basketball World Championships, won Young Sportsperson (Female) of the Year. She was part of the first team in history to beat the USA in the U17 age group.

“Hopefully, these awards encourage and inspire residents to be active and participate in sport,” Cr Swenson said.

M1 Pacific Motorway – Gateway Merge charges ahead The contract for the significant M1 and M3 upgrade between Eight Mile Plains and Rochedale South has been announced, with early works on the congestion busting project already underway.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher today announced that the contract for the design and construction of major works at the Gateway Merge had been awarded to Lendlease Engineering Pty Ltd, following a competitive tender process.

“We are a step closer to commencing this important infrastructure project, which will improve congestion and safety on the Pacific Motorway,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Today’s announcement delivers on a 2016 Australian Government election commitment to improve safety and ease congestion for the thousands of motorists travelling on the Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast every day.”

In addition to reducing traffic, 131 jobs are expected to be created as part of the project.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the upgrades, once completed, meant commuters and industry in the area would notice a significant reduction in travel time.

“This is one of the fastest growing regions in the state, and today’s announcement once again demonstrates how my government is getting on with the job, working with the Federal Government to get thousands of Queenslanders home to their families earlier each day,” the Premier said.

Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said the upgrades would be welcomed in his electorate.

The M1 Pacific Motorway – Gateway Motorway Merge project which is expected to cost between $170 million - $196 million is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Queensland Governments, with the Australian Government committing up to $115 million towards the project and the Queensland Government the remainder.

Suncorp Stadium to host NRL Grand Final rematch to thank Cam and JT The Palaszczuk Government and the National Rugby League have agreed to a Grand Final rematch between the Melbourne Storm and North Queensland Cowboys next year.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the rematch, to be held on 23 February, would also be a thank-you to the captains of both sides - Queensland Origin legends Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston.

“Cameron and Johnathan are outstanding ambassadors for their club, their State, their country and the game of rugby league. They are also selfless contributors off-the-field,” the Premier said.

“The game will be promoted as ‘A Night with Cameron Smith and JT’, and raise funds for the players’ respective charities Ovarian Cancer Australia and Prostate Cancer Foundation and The NRL Cowboys House.”

Together they have played 10 All Stars games, 79 Origin games for the Maroons, 88 games for Australia and 657 games for their NRL clubs.

Combined, these prolific try-scorers and goal kickers have scored more than 5000 points.

“Cameron and Johnathan are 34-years-young and can turn a game, indeed a season, in their side’s favour. Cameron held the NRL trophy aloft this year and JT did the same with Matt Scott in 2015,” she said.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said the fixture was a fitting way to recognise two of Queensland’s greatest rugby league players.

“This game will be a spectacle to remember for rugby league fans for years to come,” she said.
