Christmas Morning Tea Historical and current view of Shore Street East that formed retail and commercial precinct next to the goods Photo courtesy of Redlands City Council News A piece of Redlands history has been retained with Redland City Council agreeing to relocate the former Central Cleveland Station Masters Cottage from the Redland Returned Services League (RSL) land at 204 Middle Street Cleveland.

Redland City Mayor, Karen Williams said the RSL had offered to gift the historic building to Council on the condition it was relocated to make way for an extension of RSL facilities.

“The old Station Masters Cottage needs to be moved so the RSL can expand their facilities,” Cr Williams said.

“Although not in its original location, this 1880’s building still represents a vibrant part of our history, so when the RSL offered it to Council we jumped at the chance to relocate it for all Redlanders to experience.

Cr Williams said Council voted in August to fund the relocation of the building, before seeking the State Government’s approval for it to be moved onto State owned land.

“The State Government recently granted approval and work will now be undertaken to progress the move of the Station Masters Cottage to its new home in Linear Park.”

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the first summit would target local youth as recommended in a report from the Redland City Economic Development Advisory Board tabled in today’s General Meeting. “This will be the beginning of a conversation about how we as a city can be more innovative and grow our economic opportunities through it,� she said. “Redland City has some very talented and innovative people and these summits will be a chance to hear from them and harness their expertise in this area. “One opportunity that will be explored through this summit will be establishing an innovation hub in the Redlands, a place where local innovators and businesses can meet and grow their ideas. “We want to not only engage our current innovators but also our future business leaders, which is why the first summit will specifically target local youth.

Cr Williams said the youth summit would be run by local youth, with buy-in from local business and industry. “This summit won’t be a Council event, it will be run by local youth because they are the ones who will benefit from growth in innovation and they are the ones already doing amazing things in this space,� she said.

Vocational Education, has been appointed as head of College. Mr O’Hanlon-Rose is working with Founder Dr Narendra Nand to fast track the building of Stage 1, appoint staff and develop curriculum.

“Students will be able to study for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), and a number of Vocational Qualifications, including the beginning stages of their Certificate III in their Trade or Vocational area,” he said. In 2017, the College will operate from a Parkinson Campus at “The Spot” whilst the Industrial Tech and General Learning area buildings are constructed on the north Maclean site. The College will operate bus services between North Maclean and Parkinson to assist in the transport of students.

The ATAC differs from traditional schools because students study in a supportive trade-focussed environment with learning occurring in a variety of settings outside the classroom. Mr O’Hanlon-Rose said he looked forward to the challenge of building the College and was well experienced in the development of a successful campus following his building of the Australian Trade College in North Brisbane. “Students will study academic subjects in English and Maths, undertake vocational studies in IT and Business, emphasizing the link between academia and the real world, while gaining hands on skills in a real work environment,” he said.

The College will play an important role in expanding Australian School-based Apprenticeships, particularly in the traditional trade areas such as metal and engineering, automotive, agriculture, horticulture, building and construction, commercial cookery and electro-technology.

The College Board has the vision in establishing ATAC as a Centre of Excellence in agriculture and trade training as well as raising the profile of vocational and technical education in schools. Mr O’Hanlon-Rose outlined the way that students will operate at the College. “We don’t have school rules in this College; we have standards and operate as a workplace would”, he said. Students and staff are expected to meet standards which would apply to any workplace and students are placed in apprenticeships and traineeships according to their commitment, drive and employability skills that are demonstrated in the college. Students will also participate in the development of an AgriBox project which will take many of the trade skills to build. An AgriBox is a self-contained environment in which an urban farm can be developed through hydroponics, a controlled environment and the use of solar generation for power and light.

Marsden Library celebrates 10 years of service to the community Logan City Council’s Marsden Library has celebrated 10 years of service to the community with an impressive record of service.

Officially opened on 8 November 2006, by then Mayor and Division 5 Councillor Graham Able, the library has received almost two million visits and lent more than 2.2 million books to members over the past 10 years.

Councillor Steve Swenson, Chairperson of the Sports and Community Services Committee said the library had proved to be a valuable community resource and centre for activity, reflecting the role of modern libraries.

“Marsden Library is much more than a collection of books, resources and information,” he said.

“The Sensory Space opened on December 3, 2015 following a grant from the State Library of Queensland. This provides an inclusive, hands-on environment for children with and without special needs to explore and learn using their senses”.

“All of our city’s libraries are gathering places for the community and Marsden Library is no different, hosting events for more than 65,000 people over the past 10 years.

“Its Internet-connected computers have had more than 300,000 users providing a wide range of residents – and particularly students – with a vital connection to information.

“Marsden Library welcomes approximately 200 new members each month, including refugee arrivals who often depend on library resources and assistance from our staff to successfully access services as they settle in to the community.

“Our nine libraries continue to grow and provide a huge range of vital community support including meeting venues, information, communications, technology and educational services for all sectors of the community.”

e-Ticketing rolled out with Police As the world goes digital, so does policing. Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) have worked together to provide Queensland police officers with an Australian first e-ticketing application.

Rolling out this month, police officers will be able to issue traffic infringement notices to offenders by email and MMS, as well as by post, removing the need to issue hand written tickets.

TMR encourages their customers to be vigilant against potential scams relating to the electronic issue of tickets.

When an officer issues a ticket, the offender can choose to receive their infringement notice by email, direct to their mobile as an MMS, or by post

Cracking the distraction of mobile phones while driving The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) recently brought together 70 creative young Queenslanders in Brisbane for the 2016 CO-LAB Youth Road Safety Challenge. The aim? To develop creative solutions to the issue of mobile phone distractions while driving.

An alarming 88% of young drivers admit to using their phones while driving.

In addition 12.5% of Queensland’s population are aged 16 to 24 but account for nearly a quarter of all serious casualties on our roads.

These statistics saw the creation and success of the CO-LAB 2015 initiative and the resulting Settle down stallion social media campaign developed by young people, which reached 4.7 million people.

The result of the challenge was a range of excellent ideas, including: “The Itchy Hand” – uses humour to point out that the compulsion to pick up a mobile phone while driving is a condition that’s taking over the lives of young people, and “it’s kind of gross.”

“Don’t Miss It”- highlights that young people are missing out on everyday life when they are looking at trivial things on their phones.

“Chin Up”- uses this well-known saying to alert young people that they look pretty silly when they are looking down at their phones with their chin on their chest.

“You’re Not Alone”- creates emotional and social pressure around the issue by asking “would you still use your phone if people were watching?”

The 4 groups that presented the concepts outlined above were shortlisted as Finalists, and a ‘People’s choice’WWW.SEWEEKLY award was granted as.COM.AU voted by the WWW.SEWEEKLY.COM.AU
