Logan hosts Australia’s first Indigenous female politician A special Reconciliation Week event will be held in Logan next week involving Australia’s first Indigenous woman elected to Federal Parliament.

Nova Peris, who is also an Australian Olympic gold medallist, will visit the city for two special functions next Wednesday (31 May).

Sport and Community Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Steve Swenson said Ms Peris would firstly be the guest speaker at a Council breakfast for staff.

“She will then take part in a meet and greet session at Logan Central Library from 9.30am to 11am with community elders and other members of the public and we invite people to come along to meet her,” Cr Swenson said.

“Ms Peris will be taking part in a special conversation on reconciliation as part of National Reconciliation Week which runs from 27 May to 3 June.

2017 marks three significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum involving two amendments to the Australian constitution relating to Indigenous Australians, 25 years since the historic Mabo Indigenous land rights decision and 20 years since the Stolen Children National Inquiry Bringing them home report was tabled in Federal Parliament.

“As a former Senator for the Northern Territory, Ms Peris is a passionate campaigner for Indigenous rights and reconciliation in Australia and is sure to deliver a wonderful address.”

Cr Swenson said Ms Peris was also well-known for her prowess on the sporting field.

“We look forward to welcoming her to Logan and encourage the community to book for the library session.”

Darcy and the Dinosaurs Cornubia-based journalist Nicole Madigan has released her debut picture book, after signing a two-book deal with independent global children’s publisher BlOOturtle Publishing.

A widely published print journalist and former Channel Nine reporter, Ms Madigan says she became passionate about children’s literature after the birth of her first son more than 8 years ago.

“I’ve got three children now and as you could probably imagine, their book collection is almost as enormous as mine,” says Madigan.

“I’m so excited to be able to share my stories with not only my own children, but hopefully many others.”

Ms Madigan’s signing has already produced two titles, Darcy and the Dinosaurs (available now) and Ballerina Monkey, set for release in the next couple of months.

Each title will be initially released in English, with additional printings in French and German to follow.

The books were published under BlOOturtle’s trOOblOO publishing program, that ensures all picture books produced and printed by blOOturtle meet globally recognised eco-friendly production standards.

Darcy and the Dinosaurs tells the story of Darcy, a little boy whose curiosity takes him places he could never have imagined.

Cleveland Library’s A Month of Sundays event in June Cleveland Library becomes your destination for a lazy Sunday morning There will be no excuse for a boring Sunday at home during June thanks to Cleveland Library’s A Month of Sundays giving Redlanders an interesting place to hang out and relax between 10am and 1pm, from Sunday 4 June to Sunday 25 June.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Cleveland Library’s A Month of Sundays is yet another event to support the Cleveland CBD revitalisation journey.

“Since the start of the year Redland Libraries has brought our community many events, from Snakeboss to The Very Hungry Caterpillar as part of the recent Cleveland 7 Day Makeover, all of which aim to deliver an active civic heart,” Cr Williams said.

“These events are all part of turning Cleveland into a vibrant and social epicentre where people will want to linger longer when they come to visit.

“Cleveland Library is a perfect destination for visitors as it is a welcoming public space that feels like home, which supports the idea of place-making – a key strategy identified by the business community through the Cleveland: What’s Next? workshops,” she said.

Division 2 Councillor for Cleveland Peter Mitchell urged the community to visit the Cleveland Library to see the exciting additions to the space after the 7 Day Makeover.

“In addition to A Month of Sundays at the Library visitors can also enjoy the Sunday Cleveland Markets from 7am-1pm as well as the many cafes and shops the area has to offer,” he said.

Student entrepreneurs getting their startup off the ground

The Palaszczuk Government will work with Texas-based entrepreneurial experts 3 Day Startup (3DS) to provide university students on the Gold Coast, Rockhampton and Townsville with better opportunities to progress their startup ideas.

Griffith University Gold Coast will hold the 3DS program on 2-4 June, Central Queensland University in Rockhampton on 9-11 June, and James Cook University’s Townsville Campus on 16-18 June.

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said students will participate in events to build their entrepreneurial skills – giving them a unique, competitive edge.

“This Advance Queensland initiative is about getting university students more engaged in entrepreneurship where they will progress through a series of modules, including ideation, teams, customer discovery, rapid prototyping and pitch workshops,” Ms Enoch said.

“The 3 Day Startup program was founded by a group of university students who saw a need to deliver an approach that meets the demands of the real world as everyone at one stage in their life will engage with entrepreneurship.”

3DS is based in the startup hub of Austin, Texas and has extensive experience running over 300 programs in more than 30 countries.

Griffith University Innovation Manager Hunter Walkenhorst said last year’s 3DS program enabled young student entrepreneurs to participate in an intense startup program.

“Students were broken up into six teams to come up with a business idea, refine it, structure it and even find potential customers by hitting the streets and interviewing as many local Gold Coast customers as possible,” Mr Walkenhorst said.

Advance Queensland is the Palaszczuk Government’s $405 million whole-ofgovernment initiative focused on harnessing innovation and turning ideas into action.

Queensland Music Festival ng g 2017 to unite the state in song Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has officially opened the Queensland Music Festival (QMF).

The Premier said the QMF 2017 would bring over 100 performances to cities,, towns and remote regions throughout Queensland over three weeks.

“This year’s Queensland Music Festival program will have six world premieres es for music-lovers to enjoy but it’s more than just an impressive festival lineup,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“It’s a program that will help give a voice to communities right across Queensland dealing with a range of issues including family and domestic violence.

“It will bring music to towns where life might be tough, music to our remote Indigenous communities and support women and young people trying to get a break in the music industry.

“The QMF will also make high-quality live music accessible for people in aged-care centres.

QMF Artistic Director Katie Noonan said the program included contemporary and classical music, large-scale community events and education programs, and big names like Kate Cebrano.

“I want the talented and passionate people of Queensland to be empowered to join the 2017 festival and help create performances that truly reflects the life of our diverse and vibrant state,” Ms Noonan said.

“Since QMF started 18 years ago, it has reached more than a million people through projects in 82 regions. In 2017 we will continue this amazing legacy and we encourage all Queenslanders to hear and be heard this July.”

Reconciliation Action Plan for the Commonwealth Games Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones today joined representatives of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to launch the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Reconciliation Action Plan.

“The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is an opportunity for Games partners to deliver legacy outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” Ms Jones said.

“The RAP aims to encourage employment and training opportunities and greater cultural awareness as part of the spirit of the Games.

“I commend the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation’s Yugambeh Elders Advisory Group, the Indigenous Working Group and the Embracing 2018 RAP Implementation Team for working together on this important initiative.

Commonwealth Games Federation Chief Executive Officer, David Grevemberg CBE reiterated the Federation’s wholehearted support for Gold Coast 2018 in delivering the first ever major event RAP and stressed the importance of such initiatives in respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of indigenous people and celebrating their culture.

“Welcoming the Yugambeh Elders to the United Kingdom and Buckingham Palace in March this year to support the launch of the Queen’s Baton Relay and lead the Gold Coast 2018’s invitation to the Games next year was a powerful and important moment in Commonwealth sport’s history,” Mr Grevemberg said.

Arts community input needed Logan residents are being invited to take part in a special arts, culture and heritage round table discussion in June.

The invitation is extended to anyone passionate about art, culture or heritage and people who simply want to say what needs to happen to make the City of Logan the most creative, exciting and treasured place to live, work and play.

Sport and Community Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Steve Swenson said the session would be held from 2pm to 4pm on 10 June at Logan Art Gallery, Wembley Rd, Logan Central.

“We want to encourage interested community members to come along and share with us what kind of arts, culture and heritage activities they want to see in the City of Logan,” Cr Swenson said.

“We are excited about arts, culture and heritage in the city and we want as much input from the community as possible.

“We will use the results of this and other discussions to help formulate a new Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy that will set the direction for the City of Logan.

“It is vital that this strategy reflects the needs, hopes and dreams of Logan’s community.”

Queensland building approvals up 3.4 % in April Building approvals in Queensland weathered the anticipated decline in approvals for units with a sharp, unexpected monthly rise in April.

Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Curtis Pitt said today’s Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed approvals for medium-to-high density dwellings rose 10.8 per cent (trend) in April, more than offsetting a fall in housing approvals (down 2.2 per cent) in the month.

“April’s rise in building approvals reversed the trend from 2016, which had seen approvals falling, primarily due to the expected slow-down in requests for new unit, apartment and townhouse developments,” Mr Pitt said.

“In fact Queensland saw the largest monthly increase in approvals of any state in Australia at 3.4 per cent in trend terms, double that of New South Wales on 1.7 per cent and the national rate of 0.1 per cent.

“In trend terms, the total value of residential building approvals in Queensland was $1.1 billion in April this year, which is an encouraging result considering the year-on-year falls we’ve seen for apartment approvals.

The 3.4 per cent growth is welcome considering building approvals were 19.9% lower over the year.

These year on year falls have been expected following a significant surge in approvals and construction in the past few years; especially in greater Brisbane and other areas of South East Queensland.”

Nationally, trend dwelling approvals rose marginally (0.1%) in April, but were 13.8 per cent lower over the year.

The Treasurer said the Government was committed to supporting the building construction industry which is why the Government increased the value of the Queensland First Home Owners’ Grant last year from $15,000 to 20,000.

Are you prepared for the ‘the flu’ this winter?

Influenza or ‘the flu’ is a highly contagious disease caused by infection from influenza type A or B (or rarely C) virus. These viruses infect the upper airways and lungs.

The flu is highly contagious and occurs year round but peaks each year from May to September.

Flu is not the same as a common cold, and can be a serious illness. For some people, such as the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions, the flu can cause serious complications which require hospitalisation. It can sometimes lead to death.

Flu is usually spread through infected people coughing and sneezing, which temporarily contaminates the surrounding air and surfaces with infected droplets. You can reduce the risk of infection by getting vaccinated and practising good hand and respiratory hygiene.

Signs and Symptoms: Symptoms usually appear 1–3 days after being infected. A person can spread flu to others 1–2 days before they become unwell and up to 5 days after symptoms develop.

The symptoms of influenza can include:WWW.SEWEEKLY.COM.AU fever, dry cough, muscle and joint pain, tiredness/extreme exhaustion, headache, sore throat, stuffy nose.

Most people recover within a week, although a cough and tiredness may persist.

Treatment:

Generally, uncomplicated flu is managed by simply resting in bed, drinking plenty of fluids (particularly water) and taking overthe-counter medication to help relieve the symptoms. Anti-biotics are not prescribed for flu!

Antiviral medications reduce the length of time symptoms last and help people return to their daily routines earlier. These medications are most effective if they are started within 48 hours of flu symptoms appearing.

Prevention: Good hygiene is essential to protect yourself and others: • stay home when you are sick • wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand gel PG • wash your hands prior to touching28 your eyes, nose and mouth • use a tissue, or the inside of your arm, when you cough and sneeze • throw tissues away immediately and wash hands • don’t share items such as cigarettes, cups, lipstick, toys or anything which has come into contact with the mouth or nose • stay at least 1 metre away from people who have flu-like symptoms • clean frequently touched surfaces regularly, such as door handles, taps, tables, benches and fridge doors.

Vaccination Being vaccinated gives you protection against flu by building immunity to the virus and preventing transmission of the virus to other people.

Vaccination is required annually, as immunity from the vaccine decreases over time and the vaccine can change each year to cover the current virus strains. The best time to be vaccinated against flu is between March and May, before the flu season starts. Vaccination usually takes up to 2 weeks to be effective.

Vaccinations can be given to anyone aged 6 months or older, and is strongly recommended for people at higher risk of developing complications.

High-risk groups: • All adults aged >65 years of age • Pregnant women during any trimester, • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged >15 years of age, • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 6 months to <5 years of age • Individuals >6 months of age with medical conditions predisposing them to severe influenza.

Knowing your risk of developing melanoma could be as simple as taking a saliva based genetic test, with a Palaszczuk Government funded project at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) set to revolutionise early detection of the deadly skin cancer.

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick said Professor H. Peter Soyer, the PAH Director of Dermatology and University of Queensland Diamantina Institute Chair in Dermatology, will receive $600,000 over 18 months for a clinical demonstration project into a genomics approach for screening of patients at high risk of melanoma.

“It will be funded through the Queensland Genomics Health Alliance (QGHA), a $25 million five-year program funded by the Palaszczuk Government under the Advance Queensland initiative,” Mr Dick said.

“Our Government is positioning Queensland as a world leader in the translation of genomics research into healthcare practice.

“Professor Soyer’s project is vital for Queenslanders as our State has received the unfortunate title of melanoma capital of the world, with the highest incidence rates of melanoma globally.

Professor Soyer said the project would take an innovative approach to melanoma prevention, with the aim of using a simple saliva based genetic test to identify a person’s inherited/ inherent risk.

“Early melanoma diagnosis is crucial and by knowing a person’s genetic risk on top of the well-known clinical risk factors including high naevus count, we can monitor high-risk patients more closely and dramatically improve the chances of early detection and survival,” Professor Soyer said.

“In 2014, the total estimated costs of advanced melanoma was $422 million nationally, with health care making up 39% of that figure. Queensland has the most to gain from improving the efficiency of early detection and reducing the burden of advanced disease.”

In April, the Minister announced Professor Soyer was one of nine recipients awarded QGHA funding in the first of three rounds.

Mr Dick said Professor Soyer’s project and three others – aimed at demonstrating the use of genomics medicine to diagnose and manage patients with lung cancer, infectious diseases and maturity-onset diabetes of the young – would receive $600,000 over 18 months.

“The five other projects awarded funding are aimed at building the capability of Queensland’s health services to implement genomics to improve the health of Queenslanders. Each of these projects will receive $480,000 over 18 months.”

Logan’s Eco Champions announced A Greenbank couple who have made a house out of ‘upcycled’ material have been recognised as Logan’s ‘Eco Champions’.

Kim Downs and Liz Downs-Hall purchased their nine acre property in 2000 and immediately joined Council’s Land for Wildlife program.

Their block boasts an array of native plant species including many trees that contain hollows suitable for wildlife.

Kim and Liz’s dedication to the environment was recognised with Logan City Council’s Eco Champion award, announced at yesterday’s LEAF Festival.

“In addition to their support of the Land for Wildlife program the Downs family have taken environmental measures to turn their property into a genuinely ecofriendly one,” Health, Environment and Sustainability committee spokesperson councillor Lisa Bradley said.

“Their house was built to minimise its impact on the natural environment with things like relatively small dimensions, a composting toilet, a solar hot water system and extensive upcycling of building materials.

“We received many outstanding applications for the Eco Champion award but Kim and Liz were clear winners and I’d like to congratulate them.”

New Domestic and Family Violence laws now in effect Legislative changes that the Palaszczuk Government introduced to better protect victims of domestic and family violence have now come into effect.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said some amendments to the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012, which were made following the Not Now, Not Ever report, included more tailored domestic violence orders that provided better protection for victims and held perpetrators to account.

“Tackling domestic and family violence remains one of the Palaszczuk Government’s highest priorities and we are continuing to lead a program of reform to try and stamp out domestic and family violence in Queensland,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Under changes that came into effect this week, domestic and family violence protection orders will last for five years instead of two, unless a court orders otherwise, giving victims more than double the period of protection provided under existing orders.

“The laws clarify that a court can issue a domestic violence order based on a victim being threatened or fearful for their safety and well-being.

Mrs D’Ath said domestic and family violence was one of the most complex, insidious and damaging issues affecting our community – impacting the lives of children, women, men and families, and causing harm across generations.

“The complexity is reflected in the high proportion of domestic and family violence work in our courts,” she said.

“Nearly 20 per cent of the overall state wide workload of the Magistrates Court involves domestic and family violence. It is core work for Queensland’s courts.”

Action continues to tackle ALL EARS IN HEARING black lung disease Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dr Anthony Lynham today welcomed the Parliamentary Select Committee report into coal workers’ pneumoconiosis.

“The Palaszczuk Government takes the health and safety of all workers seriously and contributions to improving workplace health and safety are always valued,” he said.

The Monash review was part of a five-point action plan Dr Lynham announced in January last year.

The review recommended a range of reforms to Queensland’s coal mine workers’ health scheme.

In July last year, Dr Lynham announced a plan with industry, unions and the medical profession to implement the reforms.

“This coordinated approach continues to deliver significant improvements to protect our coal mine workers,” Dr Lynham said.

Since July 2016, coal miners’ compulsory chest X-rays have been assessed at least twice; firstly by an Australian radiologist and then by US-based experts.

By the end of this year, chest X-rays will be read by qualified B-reader Australian radiologists.

Former coal mine workers who have retired or left the industry before 1 January 2017 can also have medical examinations and chest x-rays.

By the end of the year, coal mine workers will have world-class lung function tests, with new standards to set out clear requirements for medical practices conducting the tests, including training for staff members, spirometry testing and interpretation, spirometry equipment, and quality control.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, or “black lung”, is caused by long-term exposure to respirable coal dust. Since May 2015, 21 Queensland coal miners have been diagnosed with black lung.

‘Anchors away’ for more More than 5,000 jobs in public moorings in Keppel store for Springfield as Premier opens world-class retirement village

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has officially opened the first stage of a $1 billion retirement village in the heart of Springfield.

The Premier said Aveo Springfield represented a great example of wellplanned community development.

“Springfield is Queensland’s fastest growing community and in 20 years’ when this development is complete, the area will be home to more than 105,000 Queenslanders,” the Premier said.

“By then, one in five residents will be over the age of 65, which is why it is so vital to plan ahead with developments like this.

“Over the staged rollout of this project, it will generate 5,400 jobs, and 580 operational jobs when complete.

“I look forward to seeing the project continue to take shape in the coming years delivering world-class aged care options for the people of Springfield.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the development would provide an innovative new model for aged care and give resident’s more options to age-in-place.

“The fully-integrated facility will provide independent living units, medium care units and will include specialist dementia and respite care,” the Premier said.

“Once people’s children have left home and they look to downsize, we know that many prefer to stay close to the community in which their family has grown, to maintain links to friends and the broader community.

“That’s why it’s so important these Greenfields retirement villages, which have a range of escalating care options depending on an individuals’ needs, are put in place well in advance.”

Located in the 52-hectare Health City, Aveo Springfield will comprise 2500 retirement villas and offers a comprehensive range of onsite health services.

The Premier said the opening of Aveo Springfield came just in time for the community to take advantage of a new grants program to help create more inclusive, age-friendly communities.

The Palaszczuk Government has committed $1 million over the next three years through Advancing Queensland: Age-friendly community grants.

Grants made through the program will range from $25,000 up to $100,000 and will help councils, organisations, not-for-profit groups, innovators and the community turn big ideas into action to help make life better for seniors.

“This first round of grants will focus on housing, transport and outdoor spaces,” said the Premier.

“If we can help seniors in Springfield and across Queensland stay more involved in their communities, it means a great result for all Queenslanders.”

Seven new Reef-friendly moorings have been installed around the Keppel islands to enable visitors to spend more time on the Reef without dropping anchors that can damage coral.

Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef Steven Miles said the project was a joint initiative of the Palaszczuk Government’s $180 million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program (SRIPP) and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

“This work was carried out as part of a $2.3 million project to extend the public mooring and reef protection program along the Reef, with the aim of enhancing visitor experiences and opportunities,” Mr Miles said.

“A further 20 new reef protection markers have also been installed at Keppel Bay so that visitors can avoid anchoring on some of the area’s most ecologically-sensitive areas.

“The Reef is a wonderful place for recreation, but we need to safeguard it for future generations to enjoy as well.

Member for Keppel, Brittany Lauga, said the new moorings would help protect and safeguard more of the Reef’s treasured coral into the future.

The project also delivers on the Palaszczuk Government’s commitments within the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan by ensuring protection and sustainable access to the most popular reef and island destination.
