Brisbane to bay ferry would deliver economic boost for the Redlands Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said she is “totally supportive� of a move by Brisbane City Council to make access to Moreton Bay and the islands easier from inner-Brisbane marinas.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced during his annual Property Council of Australia presentation this week that Brisbane City Council was looking to facilitate urban marinas and moorings allowing passengers to be transported down the Brisbane River to Moreton Bay. “If more people can access Moreton Bay and islands, particularly North Stradbroke Island, Coochiemudlo Island and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, it would mean significant tourism potential for Redland City; so I am very supportive of Brisbane City Council’s plans,� Cr Williams said. “Moreton Bay and its islands are the jewels at the end of the Brisbane River, so why wouldn’t you look to make access easier for tourists and existing Brisbane residents? It is a no-brainer and we are 100 per cent behind it. “In fact Redland City Council recognised this opportunity in our 2015-2020 Tourism Strategy and Action Plan and traditional owners, the Quandamooka People, have already trialed a proposed route. “Redland City CEO Andrew Chesterman and I were also at the initial Brisbane Marketing roundtable where this idea was discussed and I am happy our input was included as part of this concept. “Brisbane hosted more than 7 million tourists last year and if we were able to tap into just a percentage of these visitors it would be a huge economic coup for the city. That means money through the doors of local shops and restaurants and a real sense of confidence for locals.�

Indigenous cultural events on exhibition: PHOBIA,FEAR and STRESS Nandeebie Screen and Dreemz Residents and visitors will be able to steep themselves in local and global Indigenous cultures thanks to two artistic experiences on offer in the Redlands in the lead up to this year’s National Reconciliation Week.

Redland Art Gallery will present the Nandeebie Dreemz exhibition from 14 May to 25 June – featuring four female artists from Queensland.

Redland Performing Arts Centre’s Nandeebie Screen – Indigenous Film Festival will feature indigenous films and documentaries from across the globe from 20 to 21 May, and will be a significant new event for Indigenous film in Queensland.

Leah King-Smith (2016). Painted Redland City Mayor Karen Williams Warrior, 2016, digital still. said this was the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy the cultural contributions of first nation peoples from around the world.

“The name of these events, Nandeebie, is from the local Jandai language of the Quandamooka people and is the name for the area now known as Cleveland,” Cr Williams said.

“Both Nandeebie Dreemz and Nandeebie Screen, feature the talents of local Indigenous film-maker and artist Tamara Whyte, as one of the four exhibiting artists and the driving force for bringing together such an eclectic mix of international films and documentaries for the first time ever in Queensland.

“Entry to the art exhibition – including the opening event and floor talk – is free, and everyone is welcome to attend a wide range of community films for free on the Redland Performing Arts Centre lawn (RPAC) throughout the film festival. There are also 12 films to choose from in the RPAC Concert Hall.”

Nandeebie Dremz – Exhibition Exhibition dates: Sunday 14 May until Sunday 25 June Location: Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland, Cnr of Middle and Bloomfield Streets Nandeebie Dreemz presents the work and stories of first nation peoples from around the world. Visitors can explore the works by Indigenous artists, working in the digital space, where transition is constant, stories and dreemz are told and possibility is always present.

The exhibition presents the talent of four Queensland artists including Bianca Beetson, Leah King-Smith, Tamara Whyte and Venessa Williams Starzynski, who tell stories through drawing, film, multi-media and photography.

Life is Waiting – a feature documentary about referendum and resistance in Western Sahara as Sahrawis continue to live under Moroccan occupation.

Great Grandmothers – a documentary about three unknown indigenous heroines from different parts of the globe, who pay an important role in maintaining and passing on the cultural heritage to the young.

The full program and approximate times for each of the free screenings on the RPAC lawn will be available the week prior to the film festival.

Kimberley College’s new football academy ... continued from page 1 Among its players are boys and girls who have represented Queensland and Australia in Futsal and will test the football skills of students at the largest youth football competition in the southern hemisphere, the Kanga Cup, to be held in Canberra during the June/July school holidays.

The Academy has a combined total of 48 years in the development of youth football and boasts highly qualified coaching staff led by Head of Football Kevin Ferguson and Academy Director Shane Gilroy, the coaching team includes 2 AFC FFA A licenced coaches, Jay Son and Joel Smith, formerly of the Cavendish Road State High School Soccer Academy.

These coaches have wide experience in the establishment of soccer programs and are working with international contacts to give locals every opportunity to develop their skills.

Coaches from an English club will visit the school at the end of second term and will conduct coaching sessions which interested parents and players are welcome to view.

To round off the year, teams will play in the Singa Cup in November. Given performances this year which include winning four championships, the future

is very bright for the academy.

Kimberley College has committed over $1.5million to the development of facilities and plans to develop netball and golf academies in the near future.
