7 Day Makeover Set for Cleveland CBD Cleveland’s CBD is set to undergo a dramatic community-powered transformation to encourage people to linger longer when they come to town.

In early May internationally renowned place maker David Engwicht, creator of the 7 Day Makeover, will challenge the people of Cleveland to work together with a shoe-string budget but a wealth of enthusiasm to turn the CBD into a vibrant social epicentre.

David has worked with communities worldwide to create public spaces that feel like home and is looking forward to helping Cleveland’s CBD to reinvent itself.

“If the CBD is to compete with the regional shopping centres, it has to offer more than just convenience shopping. It has to offer an experience that you can’t get at the regional shopping centres”, said David, who has been brought in by Redland City Council as part of its Cleveland What’s Next initiative.

To make it easier for businesses to benefit from active use of the footpath, Redland City Council will establish a ‘YES! Zone’ in the Cleveland CBD, trialling a more flexible approach to the use of space beyond local shopfronts.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said that improved place making was a key strategy identified by the business community at last October’s inaugural Cleveland What’s Next workshop, together with attracting more events and providing better tourism information.

“We are delivering on our promise to work with local businesses to drive economic growth in Cleveland’s CBD,” she said.

A million reasons to invest in Springwood Logan City Council has declared Springwood as its ďŹ rst Economic Development Zone, oďŹ&#x20AC;ering developers $1m in discounts on infrastructure fees in a bid to transform the suburb into a business powerhouse.

The discount incentive is one of a number of recommendations to come out of last Octoberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Springwood Summit, a meeting that sought ideas on how to jumpstart commercial investment in Springwood.

Other business-friendly moves proposed by Council include relaxing car parking requirements and supporting increased building heights for developments to turn the area into the City of Loganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Economic Development Zone.

Mayor Luke Smith said the policy changes would give Springwood the best chance of evolving into a viable alternative business district for South-East Queensland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we want to have a business district outside of the Brisbane CBD then we need to give investors the best chance possible of making their move to Springwood to stack up ďŹ nancially,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;South-East Queensland needs us to do this too because we cannot continue to put money into hard infrastructure like train lines, buses and adding lanes to the M1. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to spend that money on people, and by that I mean doing what we can to attract investment and jobs in Logan so people can work where they live.

Historic AFL Women’s Grand Final to be played in Qld The AFL Women’s Grand Final will be played in Queensland - at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast - after The Gabba was ruled after extensive testing raised concerns about player safety.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said that while it was disappointing the Gabba would not be ready in time, he was very pleased that the game would still be held in Queensland.

“The AFL and its CEO Gillon McLachlan worked closely with the government all weekend and I would like to thank them for their commitment to hosting the game in Queensland.”

Harmony Day showcases the strength in our diversity “Everyone belongs” is the theme of this year’s Harmony Day celebrations which will be celebrated across Australia today.

As well as being Harmony Day, March 21 is also the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Multicultural Affairs Minister, Grace Grace, said it was wonderful to hear of the many celebrations that were occurring in schools, workplaces, childcare centres, churches and community groups across the country.

“Harmony Day provides everyone with the opportunity to acknowledge the importance of belonging.

“Celebrations for Harmony Day have been held since 1999 and since then, it has grown to become a significant community event across the country.

“Orange is the colour that represents Harmony Day and I, along with my parliamentary colleagues, will be wearing my orange ribbon with pride when parliament sits today,” said Ms Grace.

Ms Grace said that Harmony Day highlighted the strength of multiculturalism and the benefits that diversity brings.

“I’m proud to be part of a government that values multiculturalism and the benefits that it brings.

“Migrants and refugees bring new perspectives, skills and global knowledge to our state, filling skills gaps and labour shortages.

“Migrants, refugees and their children have helped build our state’s economy creating a range of opportunities that have benefited us all.

Safety in the spotlight for Week of Action Crime prevention and community safety will be in focus across the City of Logan next week for the Community Week of Action.

City Image Chairperson, Councillor Laurie Smith, said the focus of the Community Week of Action was to positively spread the message about crime prevention and proactive approaches to personal and community safety.

“Each day next week except Wednesday, the Community Week of Action will deliver a day-long program of free activities in a different division that everyone is welcome to attend,” he said.

“Queensland Police Service representatives will be sharing tips on how to reduce the risk of your car being broken into and securing your car’s registration plates.

Inland rail gains smoother run WEEKLY

The $10 billion Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Programme has gained a rails run with the Coordinator-General to help progress a 73-km stretch from Toowoomba to Grandchester.

State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said two key sections of the proposed 1710km freight route near Toowoomba had been declared coordinated projects by the state’s independent Coordinator-General.

“The Coordinator-General can now efficiently coordinate the environmental assessment process for the 26km, $1.35 billion Gowrie to Helidon and the 47km, $1 billion Helidon to Calvert sections,” Dr Lynham said.

“These two adjoining dual-gauge sections could each generate 1800 jobs during their four-year construction phase starting in 2020 and 700 jobs for the 50 years of forecast operation for the entire program.”

Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is delivering the 10-year freight programme, which will carry 50 intermodal round trips between Melbourne and Brisbane

each week by 2050. It has identified a broad corridor but is yet to finalise alignments.

The project is in 13 sections over a route that runs through regional Victoria and central-west New South Wales. It crosses the border into Queensland near Yelarbon and will be delivered in five sections to Acacia Ridge.

Dr Lynham said inland rail was forecast to reduce rail freight times from Melbourne to Brisbane via Sydney by six hours, as well as reducing the freight task’s carbon footprint by 750,000 tonnes per year.

“This project could be a real boon to Queensland industry, for both growers and manufacturers,” Dr Lynham said.

“However both of these sections will require rigorous planning and engineering to address the potential impacts of flooding in the region.”

Dr Lynham said the Coordinator-General would release draft terms of reference for environmental impact statements in May.
