Council asks State Government to put transport on the agenda Redland City Council has asked the State Government to prioritise key transport infrastructure as part of a submission to the draft South East Queensland Regional Plan (SEQRP).

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said while the Council submission congratulated the State Government for including a number of transport projects for Redland City, it failed to provide expected timings for this infrastructure and left out other key transport upgrades.

“Our residents have told us that upgraded roads and public transport are critical and we have reflected this in our submission to the State Government by asking them to prioritise this infrastructure,” Cr Williams said.

Logan leads the way for women Logan is leading the way for women in Local Government with 50 per cent of elected councillors being female.

Logan City Council is the only one in South East Queensland that can boast equal representation among its elected officials.

It has come a long way from the inaugural council in 1981 which had no female councillors.

Deputy mayor Cherie Dalley said the voters of Logan should be congratulated for seeing through the gender divide.

“Every workplace is enriched by having a strong female representation and I think the people of Logan have recognised that,” Cr Dalley said.

“It shows that gender is not the barrier it used to be when it comes to Local Government.”

Mayor Luke Smith said women play a crucial role in the council’s success.

“In addition to six female councillors women represent 48 per cent of our full time staff and 43 per cent of our overall workforce,” Mayor Smith said.

“That is a great outcome but also a reminder that we do have a little way to go when it comes to achieving gender equality.”

Staff and all Logan councillors will celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) tomorrow by posing for photographs for Council’s #BeBoldForChange album on Facebook. #BeBoldForChange is the rallying cry for this year’s IWD, with organisers urging participants to ask themselves the question - what if the world truly stepped up to take bold action?

Clean Up Australia Day

“Although Clean Up Australia Day is celebration of community spirit it’s also a good reminder of just how much waste ends up in places it shouldn’t.

“I’m urging everybody to make every day Clean Up Australian Day by not littering in the first place.”

According to Clean Up Australia Day cigarettes were the most common single items found nationally, making up 25 per cent of overall waste followed by chip and confectionary wrappers.

Since it first began, Australians have devoted more than 31 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected more than 331 thousand tonnes of rubbish.

City of Logan residents have shown their support for the environment, turning up in droves for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday.

Hundreds of people from around 30 officially registered groups scoured the roads, parks and waterways of the region for litter.

Health, Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Lisa Bradley was at a clean-up at Larry Storey Bridge on the Logan River at Waterford West.

“It was great to see so many people out making our City of Logan beautiful,” Cr Bradley said.

“There were about 25 volunteers from the SES and the Greater Logan Canoe Club at the Larry Storey Bridge and they managed to fill up an

Commonwealth Games Baton on its way The final countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is underway, with The Queen’s Relay Baton starting its long journey from Buckingham Palace to the Gold Coast.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate were on hand for the ceremony that has brought the spotlight firmly towards the Gold Coast.

“Three hundred and eight seven days from now, the Commonwealth Games will be underway on the Gold Coast,” the Premier said.

“The start of the Baton Relay provides all Queenslanders with the opportunity to track the Baton’s progress, with every day bringing it closer to the Opening Ceremony.”

The Baton was delivered to Buckingham Palace by Paralympic champion and GC2018 Ambassador Kurt Fearnley.

The Queen’s message was placed inside the Baton and handed to Her Majesty by nine year-old middle distance runner Emily Dean from Southport, England, who was identified through GOLDOC’s international Schools Connect Program.

The Baton was then received by Rockhampton’s Olympic and Commonwealth Gold Medallist Anna Meares who carried it through the Palace Gates before handing it on to her long-time rival, England’s Victoria Pendleton.

It will arrive in Australia on Christmas Day for a final 100 day journey through every state and territory before arriving on the Gold Coast on 4 April 2018.

Queenslanders to set new water quality targets The Palaszczuk Government’s is asking Queenslanders to help set new water quality targets for the Great Barrier Reef and other catchments.

Environment Minister Steven Miles announced in Cairns today (Monday) the start of community consultation to update the Environmental Protection Policy for Water to protect the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland’s part of the Murray-Darling Basin and south east Queensland (SEQ) waters.

“Water quality affects every local community, which is why I am asking local communities to comment on the draft water quality objectives,” Mr Miles said.

“Whether you fish, swim, sail or just enjoy spending time around our waterways, I want to hear what you think about water quality.

“Once we set targets for water quality we can work with Councils, industry and farmers to achieve those targets.

Dr Miles invited the community and industry to make submissions through the department’s website, the Queensland Government ‘Get involved’ website and through social media, before the closure of consultation on 31 May 2017.

More than 300 Central Queenslanders helped Back to Work More than 300 Central Queensland jobseekers are now back in employment thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s $100 million Back to Work regional jobs program, Member for Rockhampton Bill Byrne said.

“Already the $100 million Back to Work program has supported 174 Central Queensland employers to hire 321 local jobseekers,” he said.

Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said local employers have so far received more than $1.5 million in support payments, money they can use to help grow their business.

“The $20,000 Back to Work Youth Boost is already a great success, with 110 locals aged 15-24 now in jobs.”

Member for Mirani said the Government’s decision to extend the $20,000 Youth Boost to 31 October 2017 was an opportunity for local business to take advantage of the program.

Employment Minister Grace Grace said the Back to Work program has supported 987 employers to hire 2103 workers in regional Queensland.

“There are a further 759 applications pending approval,” she said.

April Fools Tennis Charity Day at Beenleigh Tennis Centre Beenleigh Tennis Centre is hosting a Charity Team Tennis Day on the 1st of April (April Fools Day) to raise money for Nightlight so they may continue their crucial support to our area. This is a fantastic social day for family, friends & the community. Food & Drinks included plus many prizes and giveaways with the Hit 105 street crew attending. It is going to be a super fun and silly day for everyone. Looking for teams of 4-8. The round robin will be a fast 4 tennis format which is a fast paced, fun and social way to play tennis.

The “Nightlight” group does great work throughout the Beenleigh Logan Community, caring and supporting people who have been displaced for many reasons, most commonly “Mental illness, Domestic Violence and Abuse”. They complete their work with support from our local community, grants and government assistance.

Easter Holiday Clinic Beenleigh Tennis Centre Holiday Clinic’s are a great way for kids to keep active over the school holidays, have fun and learn through play. The Tennis Australia accredited performance coaching team, offers a range of technical & physical activities which caters for all children & skill levels.

During the three days the coaches focus on stroke development, tennis games, fitness and match-play. Prizes and awards are given out on the last day including pizza lunch!

Brisbane Roar and Football Queensland have teamed up to launch the exciting Brisbane Roar School of Football initiative right here in your own backyard.

Open to boys and girls aged 6-16, Logan will play host to the new and inclusive training program when it kicks-off at Mappas Oval in Slacks Creek on Wednesday, 19 April.

Each participant will learn new skills relevant to their current level of ability throughout a 10-week training period.

Two sessions will be held per week on Mondays and Wednesdays under the guidance of qualified and friendly coaches.

In addition to the first 10-week training block, a further two terms will be held in tandem with school semester dates before expanding to a full four terms in 2018.

Up to 20 Brisbane Roar School of Football sites are expected to be rolled out across Queensland following the program’s debut in Logan.
