New ecological tourism experience for Redland City Visitors will soon be able to swing through the Victoria Point canopy with Redland City Council approving a new tree-tops adventure experience at today’s General meeting.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said today’s decision would add to the city’s already impressive ecological tourism offering.

“The tree-tops recreation facility on Cleveland-Redland Bay Road will include flying foxes, ropes-courses and rope-bridges,” she said.

“Redland City is known for its natural beauty and this facility will complement our ecological values while also providing tourism and economic opportunities.

“With our bayside location and 10,000 hectares of conservation land across the city, the Redlands has a strong reputation for nature-based and adventure tourism and this facility will further strengthen that reputation.”

Division 4 Councillor for Victoria Point Lance Hewlett said the operators already had very successful similar facilities at Mt Tamborine and Currumbin.

“They are experienced operators, so the fact they have chosen the Redlands for their next business venture is great news for the city and shows the confidence they have in us as a tourism destination,” he said.

“This facility will be ideal for corporate events, school and community groups; giving those outside the city more reason to come to the Redlands and for local groups to stay local for their next team-building event.”

Cr Hewlett said the facility would maintain the current ecology of the area.

“The facility has been designed to minimise vegetation impacts, including the office and car park to be built on land previously cleared for the current scout hut,” he said.

Following the decision the applicant will now have to get approval for vegetation management before construction begins, ensuring the area’s natural look and feel will be retained.”

Green light for Logan River resort The biggest tourism infrastructure project in Logan’s history has been given the go ahead by Logan City Council.

Council today approved the proposed Lakes resort development on the banks of the Logan River at Carbrook.

The 1500-unit resort proposal from Queensland company Australian SN International Investment Group has also received State Government support.

Once completed, The Lakes is expected to create around 600 jobs and annually inject $53 million dollars into the region’s economy.

Planning and Development Committee Chairperson, Councillor Russell Lutton, said it was a great day for the region.

“This is exactly the kind of investment that will drive Logan’s tourism economy into the future,’ Cr Lutton said.

The resort will feature a five star hotel, a convention centre, a restaurant and bar, sports facilities, a chapel and moorings for yachts and powerboats.

Cr Lutton said every effort will be made to ensure the development has minimal impact on traffic and the environment.

“The planning and assessment of this project has been one of the most thorough Council has undertaken,” Cr Lutton said.

The Lakes sits on the site of an abandoned prawn farm upstream of the Logan River mouth.

“This is a great example of the potential to transform under-utilised areas into job creating projects,” Cr Lutton said.

Charity success at Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson An amazing day was held at Gasoline Alley Harvey Davidson on the Weekend for their Smokin Summer Days Charity event.

Charity BBQ – The Long Ride for Men’s Prostate Cancer raised $2,100.00 with their Charity BBQ. Charity Beer Gardens – The Patriot’s Motorcycle Club raising money for Soldier On, raised $725.00 in the Charity Beer Gardens.

There were four Successful Burnout by Ron Keats, Matt Sewell, Nicole Farelly and Thomas MacKay. Winner of the Burnout Competition was Thomas MacKay, who completed his burnout and popped his tyre in 1 minute 10 seconds.

Rob joined Gasoline Alley in July 2016 as General Managerbusiness partner. Rob has a great Harley-Davidson history, owning his first Harley-Davidson at age 17, a ’78 Sportster! In 1985 he moved to Brisbane from New Zealand and immediately rode to Perth.

In Perth he landed a job at Fraser’s Motorcycles in Motorcycle Sales and was then promoted to General Manager of the Dealership. In 2013 he was recruited to Melbourne to become Dealer Principal of Melbourne Harley Heaven Dealership and within a couple of years was promoted to Group Dealerships Manager of all six Harley Heaven stores.

Honour for digger who dived to new depths Logan’s link to a great chapter in Australia’s military history has been immortalised with a plaque honouring Sub Lieutenant Kenneth Maxwell Briggs RANVR DSC. A World War II veteran and prominent citizen, Mr Briggs’ plaque will hang on the Wall of Ken Briggs with his good mate Sub Lieutenant John Beams Acclaim at the Logan City Council administration building on Wembley Road.

Mr Briggs cut a vital Japanese underwater communication cable in 1945, earning the submariner the Distinguished Service Cross.

Ken was born in Glen Innes, New South Wales and lived there until after high school when he moved to Sydney and joined the Navy at the age of 17.

After his military service, Ken worked in Sydney and after meeting his wife Doris (deceased) they eventually moved to Queensland.

Mr Briggs has been a Life Member of the Springwood RSL Sub Branch since 1983 and has been a member of the Slacks Creek Citizens Club for thirty (30) years.

Acting Mayor Councillor Cherie Dalley said Mr Briggs’ outstanding service, his contribution to ending the War in the Pacific in 1945 and his years of service to the community of Logan make him an ideal addition to the Wall of Acclaim.

Have your say about proposals to combat drink driving in Queensland Queenslanders are being reminded to have their say on proposed changes to Queensland’s drink driving laws before next week’s deadline.

Minister for Road Safety Mark Bailey said more than 2590 people have already had their say since the Drink Driving Discussion Paper was announced earlier this month.

“This is a huge response and I urge anyone who hasn’t yet had their say to do so before the deadline on 7 March, 2017,” he said.

“I’m heartened to see the community involved on this important issue. It’s a chance for the public to consider if the changes we’re proposing are fair, appropriate and represent the action that they want to see in this area.

“Tragically, each year in Queensland, many lives are cut short or permanently changed by debilitating injuries as a result of drink drivers and riders.

“On average, 1 in 5 fatalities on Queensland roads involves a drink driver. Based on current trends, there could be more than 2,400 fatalities and serious injuries due to drink driving during the 5 years 2016–2020, with a projected cost of $2.7 billion.”

Mr Bailey said the discussion paper highlights positive ways to support people in separating drinking and driving, citing alcohol ignition interlocks as reliable technology to reduce drink driving.

Proposals within the discussion paper include: •Making it harder for people to sit-out of the interlock program •Making people demonstrate that they can separate drinking and driving before the interlock can be removed •Expanding the interlock program to other high risk offenders including those with BAC between 0.10 – 0.149, provisional and learner drivers •Requiring all drink driving offenders to complete alcohol screening and complete a brief education program and more...

Council charges ahead on business attraction PG 16

Job-creating hotel PG developments and small businesses will 16part of Council’s new infrastructure charges receive a boost as policy which aims to stimulate economic growth across the city.

From 1 March 2017, eligible developments in parts of the city that Council has targeted for commercial growth will receive new economic incentives to build in Logan.

New hotel developments that achieve a 4 or 5 star rating could seek to have their infrastructure charges deferred.

In addition, new non-residential developments in certain parts of the city could avoid the charges altogether if the development is within an existing building.

Planning and Development Chairperson, Cr Russell Lutton, said the new charges policy was designed to remove impediments to commercial investment in Logan.

“Areas like Springwood and Beenleigh will become Logan’s commercial centres as our city grows so if Council is serious about attracting investment then we need to offer financial incentives where we can for people to do business here,” he said.

“The City of Logan would love to attract brand-name hotels recognised by Star Ratings Australia to boost short-term accommodation options for the city.

“Hotel developments not only drive jobs growth during construction, they also deliver a flow-on effect by encouraging investment in smaller businesses that support their operations.

“Council obviously can’t control the commercial market but what it can do is identify ways to cut red tape so that the market has the best opportunity to thrive and stimulate economic growth for the city.”
