Bay islands’ budget boost Redland City Council‘s 2017-18 budget includes substantial allocations for the bay islands, with nearly $4 million earmarked for road sealing alone.

Mayor Karen Williams said the Budget underscored the City’s commitment to island communities.

“From improving roads and marine transport infrastructure to upgrading community facilities such as ramps, carparks and sportsgrounds, this budget addresses island residents’ priorities,’’ Cr Williams said.

“It builds on our response to residents’ wishes for island roads to be sealed faster and for better community infrastructure, while also addressing issues of particular concern to island communities such as seawall maintenance.’’

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards said $3.4 million had been allocated to continue the Southern Moreton Bay Islands’ green seal road program.

“Another $3.26 million is set aside for work on the Macleay Island ramp carpark, with $1.27 million for the Russell Terrace sea wall and asbestos capping,” Cr Edwards said.

“The Karragarra Island Esplanade boat ramp renewal will account for $654,000, with a further $500,000 to be spent on the Russell Island pontoon upgrade.”

Cr Edwards said funds had also been allocated for the islands’ waiting shed and bus shelter upgrades program and disability access for Macleay Island’s Pats Park.

“With the islands boasting such vibrant and active arts communities, it is fitting that almost $30,000 has been included for art platforms on Russell, Macleay, Karragarra and Lamb islands,’’ he said.

Division 2 Councillor Peter Mitchell said the budget would provide a boost for North Stradbroke Island’s tourism credentials, with $672,000 allocated for the Gorge Walk Trailhead project and $300,000 set aside for the renewal of Point Lookout’s Wail Rock Stairs, among a host of other projects.

Division 4 Councillor Lance Hewlett said upgrades to marine transport infrastructure had been a priority for Coochiemudlo Island.

“Provision also has been made for work at Laurie Burns Recreational Reserve and for dinghy racks for Coochie residents.’’

Logan Central Library to temporarily close A temporary closure of Logan Central Library will take place from 1 July to fully replace the building’s leaky roof.

Logan City Council Sport and Community Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Steve Swenson said the Wilbur St library would be temporarily closed between 1 July and 30 September this year to complete the $1.2 million project.

“This closure of the building is necessary to allow the replacement of the full roof of the 25-year-old building,” Cr Swenson said.

During the temporary closure of Logan Central Library, Logan City Council Libraries is committed to providing the Logan Central community with access to library services.

Logan City Council Libraries will continue to provide core library services through: • The provision of a shuttle bus service Monday to Friday between Logan Central (Rhea St) and Marsden Library (Chambers Flat Rd) for use by library customers. The shuttle will run from 9am to noon and 1pm to 3pm, Monday to Friday.

• Delivery of library programs at the Logan Art Gallery including story time and after-school programs • Provision of a book return facility at the Logan Art Gallery • Increased public computers at Marsden and Beenleigh libraries • Increased collections at Marsden Library • Access to the Home Library Service • Availability of the Local Heritage Specialist and local studies collection at Marsden Library • Increased staff numbers at all library locations • Ongoing access to the range of online services available, including renewals and holds, through the Logan City Council Libraries website Anyone wanting further information about the temporary closure of Logan Central Library, including information about the library shuttle service and library events at the Logan Art Gallery, can phone any Logan City Council Library or visit the library website: http://loglib.org/lc

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the three-month calendar of events, supported by Redland City Council, was set to be a diverse representation of the culture and country of Traditional Owners, the Nuknukal, Nughi and Goenpul Peoples.

“It has been wonderful to see the Quandamooka Festival grow in popularity each year, drawing people from around the City, across the nation and even overseas,” Cr Williams said.

“A glance at the 2017 program and you will find everything from whale watching tours to historical displays and three-course Quandamooka tucker luncheon, with plenty of free or low-cost activities.

“I wish to congratulate organisers Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) and contributing community organisations for creating such an impressive, inclusive schedule of events.

Quandamooka Festival Curator Avril Quaill said this year’s program would deliver more than 55 events across Redlands and parts of Brisbane.

“We invite people to come and join us over the next three months to experience Quandamooka Culture in all its forms – if you can’t make it to the islands we also have many mainland-based activities,” Ms Quaill said.

“It all begins this Sunday 2 July at our Yura official opening celebrations from 11am – 3pm on the waterfront at Goompi (Dunwich) in front of Ron Stark Oval.

“The foreshore is the perfect place to kick off festivities, with water – its power to connect people, nourish the environment and give life to all things – our central 2017 festival theme.”

innovation funding drives growth for Queensland New Palaszczuk Government funding will enable seven Queensland small-and-medium sized businesses to partner with universities and bring on graduates to help generate economic growth and new jobs.

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said today (Wednesday) the graduates will be placed with the businesses under the latest funding round of the Advance Queensland Knowledge Transfer Partnerships program.

Ms Enoch said the seven businesses are Agapeflows Pty Ltd in Coorparoo ($50,000), Bioproton Pty Ltd in Sunnybank ($47,000), Hendra’s Biarri Optimisation ($50,000), Synengco Pty Ltd at Highgate Hill ($50,000), the Sunshine Coast’s Mindstar Entertainment (Verrierdale $50,000) and Queensland Oztag Group (Buddina $28,000), and Mackay’s Ultra Coral Australia ($50,000).

“The Knowledge Transfer Partnerships program will foster relationships between Queensland businesses and universities to exchange skills and ideas that ultimately inspire innovation,” Ms Enoch said.

“The project will support economic growth and generate more jobs in Queensland.”

Ms Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government has committed $3.4 million through the Advance Queensland Knowledge Transfer Partnerships program to fund 61 innovative business projects across the state.

“Many of the 61 graduates employed to undertake the projects have found permanent employment with the business or partnering university, and additional jobs have been created as a direct result of the project outcomes,” she said.

A teacher, volunteers from Schoolies and Surf Life Saving events and a high school student are among the first to be inducted into the 15,000-strong volunteer team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones today welcomed the Games’ newest recruits at the Volunteer Selection Centre on the Gold Coast where, over the coming months, thousands of offers will be made to people keen to sign up as a Games volunteer.

“Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the community and their contribution to the Games is another important legacy for the Gold Coast and Queensland,” Ms Jones said.

“Our volunteers will be able to look back on the Games and know that their hard work helped achieve one of Queensland’s greatest sporting success stories.”

GC 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC, said welcoming the first volunteers was a key milestone for the Games.

“While the quality of applications has been really high, we only require 15,000 volunteers and we are methodically working through the selection process.

“For all applicants, it’s important to remember this isn’t a first come, first served process and that the selection process continues with interviews ongoing until September.”

GOLDOC Chief Executive Officer, Mark Peters, thanked GC2018 volunteer sponsors TAFE Queensland, Seek Volunteer and Hard Yakka for their work with GOLDOC to promote the volunteer program and to train and dress volunteers.

More than 8,000 interviews have taken place since May.

Kimberley College’s new football academy Kimberley College has established a Football Academy after two years of groundwork.

The Academy caters for boys and girls at primary and secondary level and has had impressive achievements after a term’s operation. Among its players are boys and girls who have represented Queensland and Australia in Futsal and will test the football skills of students at the largest youth football competition in the southern hemisphere, the Kanga Cup, to be held in Canberra during the June/July school holidays.

The Academy has a combined total of 48 years in the development of youth football and boasts highly qualified coaching staff led by Head of Football Kevin Ferguson and Academy Director Shane Gilroy, the coaching team includes 2 AFC FFA A licenced coaches, Jay Son and Joel Smith, formerly of the Cavendish Road State High School Soccer Academy.

These coaches have wide experience in the establishment of soccer programs and are working with international contacts to give locals every opportunity to develop their skills.

Coaches from an English club will visit the school at the end of second term and will conduct coaching sessions which interested parents and players are

welcome to view.

To round off the year, teams will play in the Singa Cup in November. Given performances this year which include winning four championships, the future is very bright for the academy.

Kimberley College has committed over $1.5million to the development of facilities and plans to develop netball and golf academies in the near future.

Local boaties get upgraded boat ramp for school holidays

The million dollar boating facility at Packers Camp, Redbank Road is now complete and open for use in the June/July school holidays.

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the local contractor Pensar Building Pty Ltd had completed the $1.35 million upgrade works ahead of schedule.

“The very popular single lane ramp at Packers Camp has had a major overhaul, now boasting a new all-tide four lane boat ramp with a floating walkway,” Mr Pitt said.

“The new floating walkway down the centre of the ramp will greatly improve safety and accessibility by allowing for faster and improved boat launching and retrieval operations and better access.

“The Queensland Government knows the importance of catering for future growth in this area,” Mr Bailey said.

“With an ever-increasing number of boat owners accessing our waterways, the Marine Infrastructure Fund has been able to provide much-needed facilities and upgrades to some of our most popular recreational fishing spots.”

Fatalities a tragic start to school holidays Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey and Police Minister Mark Ryan say it’s been a horrific start to the school holidays on our roads and their thoughts are with the families and friends of the five people killed this weekend.

Mr Bailey said while the Palaszczuk Government had launched a number of road safety actions and campaigns targeting the Fatal Five, road safety was everyone’s responsibility and motorists needed to step up.

“It’s absolutely gut wrenching every time I hear of another fatality on our roads,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’re committed to lowering road trauma and distractions like mobile phones and drink driving is a priority,” he said.

“We’ve launched a number of road safety campaigns targeting speeding, drink driving, mobile phones, motorcycle safety and sharing the roads which have reached millions of people through Join the Drive to Save Lives.

“This includes ‘Sixth Sense’ a motorcycle safety campaign with five-time world MotoGP champion Mick Doohan and ‘Settle Down Stallion’ an online campaign made by young drivers and aimed at young drivers.

“This week we will launch our second campaign made by young people for young people. This one focusses on distraction and called ‘Chin Up’ will send a clear message to our young people about using their mobiles while driving.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said Queensland Police Service launched Operation Cold Snap on Friday to coincide with the winter school holidays, a three week campaign targeting drivers distracted by mobile phones.

“School holidays should be a safe and happy time for Queenslanders, and we’re doing what we can to make sure motorists aren’t putting the lives of others at risk on our roads,” Mr Ryan said.

“The operation is also targeting driver distraction as well as speeding, seat belt use, drink and drug driving and fatigue, which together make up the fatal five.

“The QPS has more officers out on our roads than ever before and will continue to be out in full force.

“I urge people to make the right choice and drive safely. It’s important for PG not 23 only yourselves, but for other road users.”
