Logan City Council announces new CEO Logan City Council has announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer, Sharon Kelsey.

The appointment comes after an extensive nationwide recruitment process aimed at bringing a new and experienced local government executive to the city.

City of Logan Mayor Luke Smith, said the council team adopted a fresh approach to the recruitment Sharon Kelsey will start in her new process after broad consultation role as Logan City Council’s CEO on with staff over the past several June 27. months.

“In the lead up to this recruitment process, we spent a great deal of time talking to staff right across the organisation and seeking input on the types of skills, experiences and characteristics they believe are important for our new CEO,” Mayor Smith said.

“They told us they wanted to see qualities such as great communication skills, integrity, knowledge and experience in local government, and someone who is a real ‘people person’.

Mayor Smith said the new CEO will bring extensive experience to the City of Logan from her work in executive positions across South Australia and Victoria.

“Sharon joins us with a strong background in Local Government, having served as the CEO of Glenelg Shire Council in Victoria for four years, as well as holding other senior local government roles,” Mayor Smith said.

“Most recently she has worked with the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission in Victoria, and earlier worked in business consultancy, and as a lawyer and barrister, as well as serving in the South Australian police force.

“Sharon achieved a great deal for her former Council area including planning and development reform, community building, investment attraction and growth.

Ms Kelsey said she was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the staff and excited about the move to Queensland and getting starting in the new role.

“It was tremendous to have the opportunity to meet and speak with so many staff this morning,” said Ms Kelsey.

“I am really excited about the Mayor and Councillors’ vision for the City of Logan and I can’t wait to get started in this role.

Sharon Kelsey will commence in her new role at Logan City Council on 27 June 2017.

At the three Straddie Street Speaks, there will be Straddie Fire and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers as well as members of Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own Emergency Management Team.

People can ask questions about how to best prepare their own properties, as well as learn more about all the work these groups do for our community.

Residents will also be able to take away a copy of the Redland City Disaster Management Plan, with suburb-speciďŹ c information all residents should know about how to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disaster events.

Call before you dig Logan City Council is encouraging residents to add a dash of colour to their footpaths with a verge garden.

Verges wider than three metres can have landscaping work performed on them and a good garden can brighten your street and potentially add value to your house.

However residents are urged to check with council before they start.

Small garden beds can be self-assessed but larger creations need council approval.

Roads and Water Infrastructure chairperson councillor Phil Pidgeon said he wants to see more colour on footpaths.

“We want to encourage people to grow gardens but it has to be done safely,” Cr Pidgeon said.

“We don’t want a situation that happened on the Sunshine Coast, where a community garden had to be dug up because a resident refused to engage with the local council at all.

“The Logan City Council approval process is quick and easy to follow so there’s no reason not to check with us first.”

Council guidelines ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers and that underground services are not impacted.

Residents are also urged to conduct a Dial Before You Dig search at www.1100.com.au before they commence works to ensure that they do not impact or damage underground services.

New $6 million redevelopment program for Country and Regional Racing

The State Budget will fund a $6 million Country and Regional Capital Works Program with spending across all three racing codes from all regions across Queensland.

Racing Minister Grace Grace said the package included $4.4 million allocated to address infrastructure needs raised through a submission process which invited race clubs to bid for funds.

Ms Grace said Racing Queensland (RQ) also identified a further $1.6 million of projects through an extensive review process, with a total of 113 clubs benefiting.

“I am pleased to be able to approve this funding program which will begin to address infrastructure requirements immediately with phase one to be completed within 18 months,” Ms Grace said.

“Our clubs in country and regional areas are a key part of their local economies while also providing a strong social connection. They need to be supported and I know these projects will make a difference.”

Ms Grace said each submission was assessed for its ability to improve racing operations, enhance industry returns and deliver better workplace health and safety and animal welfare outcomes.

Each racing region will benefit from this new funding, with projects including: Recycled and water harvesting projects in Mackay and Rockhampton; Transportable Starting Barriers to be shared between a number of thoroughbred clubs in the Central West and Downs country regions; Upgrades and replacement of racing infrastructure including stewards’ towers, running rails, barrier stalls and starting boxes at code tracks located across the regions; Animal welfare equipment and amenities upgrades across the codes and regions; and Track surface upgrades across the codes and the regions.

Racing Queensland CEO Dr Eliot Forbes said the Country and Regional Capital Works Program was for projects under $1 million with a separate process for those over that amount.

“The process was detailed and collaborative to ensure fairness and a level playing field for all involved,” Dr Forbes said “Racing facilities were visited across the state with interviews conducted and venue assessment reports produced. We also consulted with industry stakeholders regarding club and industry infrastructure requirements as well as conducting analysis of previous club infrastructure investment to identify trends.”

RQ received 159 project requests of less than $1 million. Of those, 90 have been provisionally approved as priority projects. In addition, RQ determined another 40 projects have merit however they did not meet the animal welfare p q q or workplace safetyy requirement or require further work before beingg assessed.

• Be precise with what your expectations of the day are.

State Budget invests in regional Palaszczuk Government Backs First Home Buyers to Enter Market arts and infrastructure jobs Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk says today’s State Budget invests an additional $43.1 million in Queensland’s arts sector over the next four years to support the growth of regional and Indigenous arts, arts infrastructure, cultural tourism, and additional new jobs across the state.

“For communities large or small across Queensland, connection to the arts and cultural hubs provides a sense of pride and social cohesion,” the Premier said.

“More broadly, having a vibrant arts sector creates an ongoing source of skilled jobs and economic benefits including regional investment and enhanced cultural tourism.

“I have already committed to ensuring regional Queensland communities have access to quality arts and cultural experiences.

“To that end, from 2017-18 my Government is investing in regional arts with $6.5 million over four years for indigenous and regional arts initiatives, employing regionally-based arts officers and providing increased community and indigenous arts activities across the state.

“This will deliver a more coordinated approach to regional arts that responds to local priorities and community demand,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“This Budget supports economic outcomes for indigenous artists and communities with $2.1 million allocated in 2017-18 to create an Indigenous arts incubator for startup Indigenous performance companies in Cairns.

“This will support the development of new works through commissions and deliver performances in Indigenous communities and at the Centre for Contemporary Arts Cairns.

“This investment builds on the Government’s Backing Indigenous Arts initiative, which has historically had a focus on visual arts, and enables Indigenous performance artists to showcase their unique cultural heritage and local stories. This will also generate employment and training opportunities, and connect our indigenous performing artists with visitors in Far North

First Home Buyers are among the big winners in the 2017-18 Budget.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt said the $20,000 First Home Owners’ Grant would be extended by six months to drive further construction and economic activity.

“The Palaszczuk Government recognises how difficult it is for first home buyers to get into the housing market,” Mr Pitt said.

“That’s why we temporarily increased the First Home Owners’ Grant from $15,000 to $20,000 on 1 July last year, an offer that was set to expire at the end of this month.

“The 2017-18 Budget contains additional funding of $30 million to extend the boosted grant offer for a further six months.

“That gives First Home Buyers until 31 December 2017 to sign a contract on a new home and access this generous incentive.”

It is specifically for transactions for buying or building new houses, units or townhouses valued at less than $750,000.

Mr Pitt said the popularity of the First Home Owners’ Grant is clear with 4,900 application worth $98 million approved so far, with more to be approved as house purchases by applicants proceed.

“This is one of the most effective ways of helping families to get a start with a new home while simultaneously creating construction jobs and spurring on the economy,” Mr Pitt said.

“This grant can have even greater effect in regional Queensland, where $20,000 may be more than half of the 10 per cent deposit for a median priced house.

“It’s an initiative that will continue creating jobs and help more Queenslanders into home ownership.”

Major projects deliver Jobs for Queensland

Projects included: $70 million in 2017-18 for the construction of the Mackay Ring Road – this is a $498 million project in partnership with the Australian Government the $200 million expansion of the Capricornia Correctional Centre near Rockhampton will ease overcrowding in the prison system, and will support 100 construction and 70 ongoing jobs $120 million for the CairnsShipping Development Project, a much needed project to deliver growth in cruise shipping and jobs in the tourism sector and associated suppliers of goods and services — also subject to an EIS and business case $176 million to expand the Cairns Convention Centre into a state-of-the-art international venue $225 million over four years to address long-term water security in the Townsville region a state contribution of $140 million to the $250 million North Queensland Stadium to support around 750 jobs in design and construction, with many of those positions being filled by people from the Townsville region a downpayment of up to $75 million for channel widening at the Port of Townsville to facilitate more trade and investment and to ensure Townsville is well positioned for future growth and jobs — subject to finalisation of an environmental impact statement and business case assessment $2 million to support the planned relocation of the Rockhampton Regional Council’s city art gallery “In addition, while the Turnbull Government has not yet agreed to the proposal to fund a Rockhampton flood levee under Category D of the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, we have set aside the necessary funds for our share of this important project,” Mr Pitt said.

“These are just a handful of the projects that will deliver valuable new infrastructure, help boost economic growth, and create jobs for Queensland,” Mr Pitt said.

Today’s State Budget continues the Palaszczuk Government’s economic plan that includes funding of $42.75 billion over four years for job-creating infrastructure across the state to supporting regional economies and jobs.

Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment, Curtis Pitt, said the 2017-18 State Budget would deliver Jobs for Queensland.

“This year’s Queensland Budget will directly support around 40,000 jobs in 2017-18, including an estimated 22,000 jobs in regional Queensland,” Mr Pitt said.

“It includes a massive $42.75 billion allocation over four years for metropolitan and regional infrastructure projects that would support thousands of jobs for Queensland.

“This follows the $40 billion allocation over four years in the 2016-17 Budget.”

Mr Pitt said while the capital program included more than $3.8 billion for roads and transport projects such as construction of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing and widening the Gateway Motorway North to six lanes.

“These projects are examples of where the Queensland and Federal Governments can work together to fund projects,” he said.

Mr Pitt said while the Budget contained $2.8 billion to start the Cross River Rail project in SEQ, it delivered vital infrastructure for communities right across Queensland.

“There is $604 million for school facilities and $916 million for health capital works across Queensland,” he said.

“The Budget will see $4.8 billion invested in infrastructure this year across regional Queensland including Mackay, Outback, Far North Queensland, Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Darling Downs and Townsville that will directly support 14,500 jobs.”
