7/115 Brisbane St, BEAUDESERT beaudesertlegal@gmail.com Logan City Council has joined with a popular Logan business to help sports clubs and community groups affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

Twenty-two organisations have received $1000 in emergency relief, jointly funded by Council and Brisbane Lions Football Club (LIONS@springwood).

Some of the recipients include the Mount Warren Park Golf Club and Beenleigh RSL. The club faces a repair bill in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and is unable to get flood insurance.

“It hit us pretty hard, the water stopped just short of the clubhouse but it went through our sheds and took a lot of equipment with it,” Beenleigh RSL & Golf Club General Manager Norman Studt said.

“We had to take three loads of tools and equipment and so on to the tip so this money will help buy back a little of what we’ve lost.”

“It’s very much appreciated, the Council has been very supportive of us since the flood.”

Mayor Luke Smith said Council was committed to helping sport and community groups recover.

“They play such an important role in their communities but they can be vulnerable financially, particularly when a disaster hits,” Mayor Smith said.

“Cash flow is always an issue in those circumstances and that’s why we’ve teamed up with the Lions to offer a little relief.”

Meanwhile, play has resumed at all sporting fields in Logan, after around 20 were closed due to contamination from the floods.

City Lifestyle and Customer Services Chairperson, Councillor Steve Swenson, said Council used a fast-track test to determine the safety of playing fields, allowing clubs to use their home grounds.

The same testing method has seen all but one recreational park re-open in Logan.

“This is an outstanding result and a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of council staff,” Cr Swenson said.

“Although there is a hard road ahead for many residents real progress is being made in our recovery.”

Tickets now on sale for this year’s Mayoral Prayer Breakfast Local residents can help make a difference to the lives of Redland families with tickets on sale (from Monday 10 July) for this year’s Redland City Mayoral Prayer Breakfast to be held on Friday 18 August at the Redlands Sporting Club.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said she had seen first-hand how the annual event had made a positive difference to the lives of local youth and the broader community.

“School chaplaincy programs provide important guidance and enable our city’s students to fulfil their potential,” Cr Williams said.

“This year’s event will feature guest speaker Pastor Neale Collier, a school chaplain, youth leader and camp director, who will share his stories about his passion to see young people reach their full potential through Christ.

“Neale’s work through school mission trips not only uplifts the lives of children living in poverty but also sees his Australian students inspired and impassioned by making a real difference in the world.”

Cr Williams said tickets for the popular event were expected to sell fast with proceeds supporting local school chaplains.

“I urge anyone wanting to attend to get in quick to secure a spot.”

Macleay Island foreshore redevelopment to commence Work is set to begin this month on an $8.5 million upgrade of the Macleay Island foreshore precinct, providing substantial long term improvements to island parking issues, greater access for recreational boaties and sealing asbestos contamination on the foreshore.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said civil construction group Pensar Civil Pty Ltd had been awarded the contract to construct a new seawall and sealed car park, associated road works and marine infrastructure, a new two-lane recreational boat ramp, a third lane for a future floating walkway, and access stairs.

“This is the largest single infrastructure project in the 20172018 budget and the entire foreshore project has been designed to entomb any possible presence of asbestos at the site,” Cr Williams said.

“The redevelopment will provide an additional 147 car parks, including an additional six disabled car parks, 26 car-trailer parks and eight motorcycle parks, as well as an improved dropoff zone and safer vehicle access.

Divisional Councillor Mark Edwards said the Macleay Island foreshore upgrade reflects years of effort to gain works approval and will benefit all the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.

One of Cleveland’s landmark buildings – the 128-year-old Station Master’s cottage – will be moved to a new site this week on Thursday from 4am.

The historic cottage will be relocated from 204 Middle Street to Linear Park at 120 Shore Street North to sit beside the Redland City Lions Hall and Old Schoolhouse Gallery.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the cottage is a Cleveland icon, and an integral part of the history of Cleveland.

“The cottage was originally located on the Cleveland rail line, which boasted a busy goods yard where farm produce and goods were transported from the Redlands to the Brisbane markets at Woolloongabba,” she said.

“It was originally built in 1889 when the railway line to Cleveland was opened, and was within sight of the former Cleveland Central rail station,” she said.

Council voted in 2015 to relocate the building in recognition of the important place it played in Redlands’ history.

The relocation to its final resting place in the old Cleveland township precinct will be a coordinated effort between Council, Energex, Queensland Police, Department of Natural Resources and Mines and RSL Queensland.

Local Councillor for Division 2 which includes Cleveland, Peter Mitchell, said the cottage would be available for use as a community facility after relocation, with an expression of interest to be publicly advertised.

“The expression of interest is expected to be advertised in the first six months of next year (2018).

Get Started Vouchers now open Up to 13,300 Queensland kids are about to receive a helping hand to start playing sport with Round 10 of the Queensland Government’s Get Started Vouchers program opening today.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the program is one of the Queensland Government’s most popular grants programs, with $2 million allocated toward the $150 vouchers in this round.

“We want to make sure that kids have opportunities to get involved in sport and active recreation, but we also know many family budgets are under pressure,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Get Started Vouchers can make it easier for families by covering up to $150 in costs to help get kids set up in organised sport.

“Vouchers are issued on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so I’d encourage parents to get online and apply today.”

Mr de Brenni said more than 4,200 clubs across Queensland are registered for the Get Started Vouchers program, with a wide range of activities on offer.

“Organised sport is not just about health and fitness, it’s a chance for kids to have fun and make friends in a supportive environment,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Eligible children can claim one voucher each calendar year, so if you have a child who missed out in Round 9, I’d encourage you to get online and apply for one today.”

Get Started Vouchers is an initiative under the Queensland Government’s successful Get in the Game funding program, aimed at supporting grassroots sport and recreation.

Extra holiday for state school students after Commonwealth Games Queensland state schools will get an extra day of holidays next year following the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Education and Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said state schools would start Term 2, 2018, on Tuesday 17 April instead of Monday 16 April to allow school buses, used during the Commonwealth Games, to return to regional areas.

“The later start date follows advice from Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR),” Ms Jones said.

“TMR has advised many of the state’s school buses will be in use at the Games’ closing event on Sunday 15 April and will be unable to return to regional centres in time for the start of school on Monday as originally scheduled.

“Many of our school buses will be used to transport spectators, event staff, athletes and media representatives during the Games.

“As every Games ticket will include free public transport, more than 700 buses will be required on many occasions throughout the 11-day event.

“The change of date will also enable teachers to access an extra day of professional development, with Monday 16 April now allocated as a flexible professional development day.”

Ms Jones said the decision to postpone the Term 2 commencement date followed discussions with P&Cs Queensland, relevant unions and principals’ associations.

“Next year’s Games will showcase Queensland as a modern and vibrant destination attracting business, tourism and investment that will deliver lasting benefits for years to come,” she said.

“I wanted to relay this message to parents now, well before the beginning of Term 2 in 2018, so they have a long period to plan for this date change.”

The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be held from 4 to 15 April 2018.
