Logan’s popular De-sexpo is once again proving a hit with a record number of animals de-sexed in the first month of the 2015 campaign.

More than 58 cats and dogs have been de-sexed at the Combined Vets of Logan Clinic with similar numbers being reported by the 14 other participating vet clinics in the City of Logan.

Animals and City Standards Committee Chairperson, Councillor Graham Able (Division 5), said the two-month annual campaign continued to attract a lot of interest.

“De-sexpo is a great time to bring in your pet as you receive a microchip and free nail clipping for dogs,” he said.

“Once your pet is de-sexed you also save money on registration fees so we expect bookings will remain high throughout August so I would encourage everybody to book an appointment.

De-sexing reduces the risk of pets getting cancer or other diseases of the reproductive organs and can help prevent pets from roaming, fighting or causing nuisance to neighbours Cr Able said de-sexing is important part of responsible pet ownership and is mandatory for cats in Logan unless the owner is a registered breeder.

“Every cat and dog that is de-sexed during July and August 2015 at a participating veterinary clinic automatically goes in the draw to win a prize pack valued at $100 so this really is the perfect time to give your pet the snip.”

Logan’s Environmental Values More Visible With New Online Mapping The value of protected vegetation in the City of Logan is now much more visible to the community, thanks to a new online estimator introduced this week as part of the new Logan Planning Scheme.

Logan City Council Parks, Health, Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Councillor Trevina Schwarz (Division 11), said the planning scheme included measures for a range of environmental factors – including the protection of wildlife habitat, biodiversity and native vegetation – while also balancing community and economic needs.

“Many residents feel a connection to the city’s natural aspects, and the local environment is certainly something Council is also keen to protect as much as we can,” she said.

“Under the planning scheme, property owners can take action to compensate for the environmental costs of their development, such as planting trees elsewhere on their property or another property, or by making a financial contribution, which we’ll use to support the environment through Council initiatives.

After using the online tool, customers will receive an automated report with an estimate of any offset charges, as well as details about why offsets apply and their importance to protecting the environment in the city.

“We see this as a way of starting the conversation and then property owners can contact us for more information as required,” Cr Schwarz said.

“The reports are designed to be an information tool, and are not formal quotations or invoices.

“Environmental offsets can be complex from a policy point of view. The online estimator aims to simplify that for all of our landowners.”

Brisbane City Hall Heritage Tour Join a tour of Brisbane City Hall and explore the much-loved, heritage-listed building, which is seen as the heart of Brisbane.

Built between 1920 and 1930, the civic seat of the city is home to the Lord Mayor and plays host to community and corporate events. Unlike a heritage home, it is a busy and active working building, so some rooms and features are not open to the public on certain days.
