Here’s how we recycle A story on 4Corners program has prompted a number of residents to contact Council asking about our recycling practices.

Here is a snapshot of what happens to your recyclables: Logan City Council provides recycling collection via the yellow lid wheelie bins to residents and offers the same service to commercial premises upon request.

The recycling bins accept paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers, steel tins and aluminium cans.

Council also provides recycling drop off facilities at each of its five waste and recycling facilities at Browns Plains, Carbrook, Greenbank, Beenleigh and Logan Village for the same materials.

The recyclable material collected in the yellow lid wheelie bins and at the waste and recycling facilities are delivered to Visy Recycling at Gibson Island, Brisbane.

Under Council’s recycling contract with Visy, Visy are required to recycle all materials received into useable items.

Council also has mechanisms available to undertake its own audits of Visy’s operations.

Council and/or its independent contractor, undertakes twice yearly audits of the composition of LCC recyclables delivered to the Visy Recycling plant.

There have been no indications via Logan City Council audits to suggest that recyclable materials delivered to Visy are not being recycled.

General recyclables Logan City Council waste and recycling facilities do not receive waste from interstate.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Shannon Fentiman joined with Mark Townend, Chief Executive Officer, RSPCA Queensland and some of his furry friends at the Ekka to announce the new funding.

“This funding will help keep the Pets in Crisis service operating to protect animals at risk from domestic and family violence in their homes,” she said.

“We know that pets can be harmed or threatened with harm when perpetrators of domestic violence use them as another way to control or intimidate victims.

“The Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland identified that victims may delay leaving abusive and violent situations due to animal welfare concerns, and if they can’t take their pets with them.

“The Pets in Crisis program, delivered by RSPCA Qld in partnership with DVConnect for more than 10 years, provides a place of safety for pets when a victim of violence needs to leave their home.

“Knowing that their pets also have a safe place to go removes a barrier to them leaving their homes and breaking the cycle of violence.”

DVConnect Chief Executive Officer Diane Mangan said for hundreds of pet lovers the decision to leave a violent home was made all the more difficult.

“For any pet lover whose animal is part of the family, the thought of leaving them behind in an emergency is unthinkable,” Ms Mangan said.

“Knowing that their pets will be cared for and that they can be reunited as soon as they can get back on their feet is sometimes the catalyst for many women having the courage to take that vital step towards leaving a violent domestic situation and protecting themselves, their children and just as importantly their pets.”

“I’m so pleased we’ve been able to continue this vital partnership, to provide a safe haven for pets as well as giving women and children escaping violence peace of mind that their pets are also protected,” Ms Fentiman said.

Redland Seniors Week celebrates ‘Inspiration for all ages’ Seniors Week is here again, and this year’s theme is designed to encourage older residents to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said this year’s activities, running from 17 – 27 August, were as diverse as ever.

“Events range from a 10 kilometre walk to a free variety concert showcasing Redlands’ talent, to an Awards Ceremony to recognise our most inspiring seniors for their contributions to community life,” Cr Williams said.

“I encourage seniors to explore the programs, services, events and activities available this year.”

These include IT workshops at Council Libraries, a darts competition, a Seniors’ Golf Day and variety shows.

Seniors Week is held each year to improve attitudes to older people and ageing, get seniors involved in community life and to enhance community connections and intergenerational relationships.

“Because our city offers such a great lifestyle, we find many people over the age of 55 gravitate here,” Cr Williams said.

“That means we have an ageing population, with an increase in people aged 60 and over, from 23% of the population to 25% of the population between 2011 and 2016.

“This compares to a state average of around 18%.

“Where would we be without their contribution to community and charity organisations?

“Many work hard and bring years of knowledge, experience and skills to voluntary roles.

“On behalf of Redland City Council and all residents, I’d like to thank our seniors for their invaluable contribution to community life, and encourage people of all ages to take part in the events which have been organised to help celebrate Seniors Week.”
