Aspiring poets invited to Yarrabilba A morning of poetry in the park will wind up a special community project at Yarrabilba next weekend.

A bush poetry breakfast on Sunday, 30 April in Yarrabilbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Greenstone Park will be the wrap-up event for Connecting our communities: Yarrabilba and Logan Village.

Sport and Community Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Steve Swenson said the Logan City Council and Yarrabilba Community Association (YCA) had been partnering on this project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yarrabilba is a new and rapidly growing community while Logan Village is one of Loganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest suburbs and renowned for its heritage and civic pride.â&#x20AC;?

Cr Swenson said Poets in the Park would run from 9am to 12pm and mark the end of the month-long project.

The day will feature the Logan Performance Bush Poets and Australian songs performed by Wayne Caldwell. Bring a picnic or purchase breakfast at YCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BBQ. Division 4 Councillor Laurie Koranski said the community was invited to be involved in the poetry breakfast. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can put yourself in the running for a $50 cash prize and a gold medal by entering the One Minute Poem Competition,â&#x20AC;? Cr Koranski said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Participants must write a poem about Yarrabilba containing the words Yarrabilba, camp, pine and beautiful. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You will then need be at Greenstone Park to read or recite your poem between 10am and 11am on the 30 April. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We invite everyone to join us in the park for a day of fun.â&#x20AC;?

Another major step in the rejuvenation of Logan Central has begun with construction of a $2.1 million shared pathway.

The shared pathway and pedestrian crossing will connect Railway Parade to Logan Gardens and enhance access to the Logan Entertainment Centre and the Logan Art Gallery.

It will run between Woodridge State School and Logan City Special School, from Charles Avenue to Wembley Road, completing the link between the Woodridge Railway Station and Logan City Council Administration area.

Mayor Luke Smith said it was the first capital works project implemented under the Logan Central Master Plan.

The plan is guiding development in Logan, in keeping with the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2009-2031.

“The pathway will bring together some major elements of Logan Central and connect people to their place and community,” Mayor Smith said.

“It’s the first step on Council’s vision to improve connectivity in the City of Logan and make heavily patronised areas safer and more accessible for the entire community.”

The pathway became possible after the Queensland Government agreed to contribute $1.12 to the project and an agreement reached with Woodridge State School (through Education Queensland) to provide a 15-metre wide strip of land through its grounds.

Planning and Development Committee Chair and Division 2 Councillor Russell Lutton said such collaboration would advance the Logan Central precinct.

“Council is committed to working with all levels of government to realise the full potential of the Logan Central Master Plan,” Cr Lutton said.

“I’d like to thank the Queensland Government for partnering with us to take this first important step on the improvement of Logan Central.”

The Department of Transport and Main Roads contributed $733,000 to make the pathway user-friendly for cyclists.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the works demonstrated the Government’s commitment to building cycling infrastructure.

The pathway project will be enhanced by landscaping, lighting, CCTV cameras and the signalised pedestrian crossing, which will make Wembley Road safer for pedestrians and school children.”

Work should be completed by October this year, weather permitting.

Every effort is being made to minimise disruption during construction with project vehicles accessing the site from Charles Avenue via Woodridge State School.

Market to offer Mother’s Day treats Logan residents will be able to begin the hunt for Mother’s Day gifts early at a special community event this week.

The Logan Art Gallery lawn will play host to a special Mother’s Day Creative Market on Saturday, 29 April to give people the chance to find the perfect gift for the special woman in their lives.

Sport and Community Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Steve Swenson said the markets would offer a range of unique gift suggestions.

“Stall holders will present their wares including crafts, handmade clothes and sweets and food and drink from 10am to 2pm,” Cr Swenson said.

“Pick up a gift from the market or the Logan Art Gallery store in time for Mother’s Day. “This is a great way to find a special gift and tick off your shopping list ahead of time.”

Market operator Lorna Katene said about 25 operators had already signed up for the event but space was still available to any local craftspeople who wanted to take part.

“If you have anything interesting to offer we would love to add you to our list of stallholders on 29 April,” Mrs Katene said.

“We are keen to have a diverse range of stalls on offer at this month’s market.”

Have you ever thought about becoming a foster carer?

More Queenslanders are needed to help vulnerable children safe so they can reach their full potential, by signing up to become a foster carer.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman encouraged all Queenslanders to think about opening their hearts and homes to children in need across the state Ms Fentiman kicked off the launch of a new foster carer recruitment campaign in time for Foster and Kinship Care Week at Roma Street Parklands today.

Ms Fentiman said she wanted to see an extra 1000 foster carers sign up across the state as part of the first stage of the $2.6 million campaign.

“Our foster and kinship carers are some of the most dedicated people I’ve ever met,” she said.

“But we need more people to take on this vital role, and I would encourage everyday Queenslanders to consider whether they could take on this role.

“What better way to hear about the benefits of foster caring than from dedicated carers themselves,” she said.

“It’s not always an easy job and there can definitely be challenges along the way.

Ms Fentiman said the Palaszczuk Government was also boosting support to foster and kinship carers.

“This includes providing at least $2000 per year towards out-of-pocket childcare expenses for children aged one to five,” she said.

“This will support our hardworking foster and kinships carers across the state, and will also help attract more working Queenslanders to take on the invaluable job of fostering.

“We will also continue our efforts to recruit more foster carers throughout the year.”

Race is on for Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games tickets Ticket requests for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) have officially opened with the first group of hopeful spectators submitting their requests from 12pm today.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones encouraged Queensland families to logon to www.gc2018.com/ tickets to make their ticket requests.

“The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is going to be the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade and we want the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia to share the dream of this once-in-a-lifetime event,” she said.

“Ms Jones said ticket requests would be open for four weeks until midnight on 22 May 2017.

Public activations will also be held on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne at various stages over the next month before ticket requests close on 22 May. The Palaszczuk Government is extending a pass for Queensland veterans to travel free on public transport as well as providing free transport for veterans andtheir families to ANZAC Day services.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport Jackie Trad today announced validity of the Totally and Permanently Incapacitated and Extreme Disablement Adjustment (TPI/EDA) Pass would be extended from ďŹ ve to 10 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In recognition of their service to our country and to assist their mobility and participation in the community veterans are eligible for unlimited free travel on public transport services throughout Queensland,â&#x20AC;? the Premier said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By extending the validity period of the pass to 10 years we are reducing the amount of time, eďŹ&#x20AC;ort and cost for our veterans and helping them to feel conďŹ dent accessing and using public transport in Queensland.â&#x20AC;?

Queensland TPI Association President Chris Richards said the extended 10-year validity for TPI/EDA veterans was great news for veterans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Association appreciates this valuable contribution to its members who are able to access public transport services,â&#x20AC;? Mr Richards said.

To be eligible for a TPI/EDA Pass, applicants must be Queensland residents and hold a Department of Veteransâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; AďŹ&#x20AC;airs Gold Card that is embossed TPI or EDA. Ms Trad said veterans and their families would also be able to travel to services on ANZAC Day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a mark of respect to the men and women who have served our country, veterans wearing their uniform or service medals can travel for free across all TransLink bus, train, ferry and tram services in South East Queensland,â&#x20AC;? Ms Trad said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Accompanying family members wearing service medals and children participating in ceremonies representing scouts, girl-guides and military associations will also be able to travel free while wearing their oďŹ&#x192;cial uniform.
